Your First Grey Cup Highlight: A Punter Gets Lit Up

((HT: ESPN/TSN))

It's the 102nd Grey Cup in front of a not-sold out BC Place with Hamilton and Calgary.

This happened on a punt return with Stampeders punter Rob Maver trying to stop Hamilton Tiger-Cats kick returner Brandon Banks

BUZZER BEATER: Bowling Green's Richaun Holmes Crazy Lay Up At The Buzzer

The video quality is very poor because it's from a fan's camera phone but Bowling Green's Richaun Holmes takes the inbounds pass from Spencer Parker and puts up a wild contested lay up at the buzzer and wins it for the Falcons 64-63 over Detroit.

Holmes' buzzer beater capped off a brilliant performance with 26 points and 18 rebounds.

Here's a cleaner look under the basket.

DEVELOPING: tOSU's Karageorge Found Dead

((HT: NBC4i.com, WCMH-TV/Columbus))

Columbus, Ohio police have confirmed that the body found near Ohio State University this afternoon was that of walk-on senior lineman Kosta Karageorge. He had been missing since the early morning hours Wednesday and was last known to have sent a disturbing message to his family about how concussions have impacted his time on campus.

Susan Karageorge told NBC4 her son sent her the following text: "Sorry if I am an embarrassment, but these concussions have my head all (expletive) up."

11Warriors reports that Columbus PD Sgt. Rich Weiner said Karageorge died from what's believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Karageorge was honored along with his fellow seniors on game day at The Horseshoe

BUZZER BEATER: Half Court Bomb Is A Winner For Southern Utah

Another long range game winning bomb this time from Southern Utah's A.J. Hess.

With the Thunderbirds down 92-90 to Texas-San Antonio with 2.5 seconds left Hess took the inbounds pass, dribbled once and launched from about 40 feet and banked it home for the game winner.

The T-Birds win it 93-92.  James McGee lead SUU with 21 points.

This Is A Downfield Block By A Cyborg

((HT: Cork Gaines Vine))

The HQ has always maintained that Mike Evans, back in his time at Texas A&M, held some very cyborgian qualities as a wide receiver- size, speed, effort. The only thing missing from his HAL 9000-ness was his mental ability to stay locked into a game

Terrence Newman found out the hard way that, when Evans is locked in, he's locked in...

All that did, really, was remind the HQ of this...

Johnny Manziel Finally Gets To Play And Scores Cleveland's Only Touchdown

Johnny Manziel Scores Against Buffalo
Well Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine did it.  Pettine went to the bullpen and pulled
starting quarterback Brian Hoyer after a sub par performance against the Buffalo Bills.

Johnny Manziel came in to give the Browns offense a boost and he did including scoring his first NFL touchdown the way you expect Johnny Football to.

Manziel ran it in to get the Browns to within 10 points.

Of course Johnny Football flashed the money sign after he scored what turned out to be Cleveland's only touchdown of the game.

Manziel's final numbers were 5 of 8 for 63 yards and rushed for 13 yards.

Hoyer's numbers were 18 for 30 for 192 yards and two interceptions.

Needless to say the Buffalo Bills won the game 26-10.

Coaching Carousel: Chad Morris to SMU is Done Deal

((ht: dallasnews.com))

We told you about this report during the week, it's now all according to multiple reports--been made official.

The first rider to connect via the coaching carousel--Chad Morris.

Morris, will be announced as the new head coach at SMU on Monday.

Morris, the highest paid assistant in College Football, will reportedly pull in a cool $2 million a year to take over the nations only winless team in 2014. (Currently 0-11)

Read more from the Morning News RIGHT HERE

CBSSports.com says it's official RIGHT HERE

Morris, who's roots are in Texas High School football and was a graduate of Texas A&M will take over for June Jones who tried to rebuild the once proud Mustang football program which was shut down back in the early 1990's.

He leaves a Clemson team that just defeated arch rival South Carolina and though not going to the ACC title game, still have a bowl berth awaiting them.

The move also raises questions about Clemson coach Dabo Swinney who according to some reports has a mutual interest in the opening at the University of Florida.

We will see...the Coaching Carousel is just starting to roll...

DEVELOPING: Done, Done, and Done: UAB Blowing Up Football

In one of the more transparent power plays by a Board of Trustees in recent memory, the University of Alabama Birmingham has fired its Athletic Director and will shutter its football program.

The "when" is the only question...

Joe Schad caught up with Clark after the game as well, and Clark was not optimistic at all: "I think it's going to happen," said Clark, who led UAB to a 6-6 record in his first season at the school. "Unless something changes before the weekend ends, I think it's over. I think the odds are very high it ends this week. To shut the doors? That's sad."

Dan Wolken over at USA Today has some more information: With UAB's football future hanging in the balance, a person close to the decision-making process told USA TODAY Sports that athletics director Brian Mackin has given indications the program will shut down this week and that Mackin is working on a separation agreement from the university. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the conversations were supposed to be private. Mackin did not return multiple calls and text messages seeking comment.

Clark is meeting with his president tomorrow, via his Twitter:

Contrary to news, We haven't heard any decision about our program. We are still fighting!

Here's head coach Bill Clark after becoming bowl eligible yesterday- the irony is inescapable...
Obviously, more when we know more, but the HQ hopes the UA Board of Trustees is happy with themselves...

BREAKING: Nebraska fires Bo Pelini

You gotta win some big games, Coach... (photo courtesy AP)
LINCOLN--Apparently seven consecutive winning seasons and an overall 67-27 record are not enough to keep a job as head coach of the University of Nebraska football program.

Mark "Bo" Pelini was relieved of his coaching duties this morning, after dropping two of his last three regular season games this season. He ended his Nebraska tenure by losing to #20 Wisconsin, #25 Minnesota, and then defeating Iowa in a shootout yesterday.

This was Pelini's first head coaching gig, and he never really established the Cornhuskers as a national championship-contending team. Consistency is one thing - Pelini won at least nine games every season. However, people in power in Lincoln apparently did not believe Pelini's leadership could take Nebraska to the next level in the Big Ten, or the BCS for that matter. He never won a conference championship at Nebraska, and we all know that's the death knell for a high profile college coach.

"Earlier this morning, I informed coach Bo Pelini of our decision to move forward in a new direction. Coach Pelini served our University admirably for seven years and led our football program’s transition to the Big Ten Conference,” Shawn Eichorst, Nebraska's athletic director, said in a press release this morning. “We wish Coach Pelini and his wonderful family all the best and thank him for his dedicated service to the University."

UNL chancellor Harvey Perlman expressed his confidence in Eichorst.

I fully support Shawn’s decision to make a change in the leadership of our football program, and wish Bo and his family all of the best," Perlman said in a press release. "I am confident that Shawn will find the best coach, teacher and fit for this University and for our football program."

According to the Lincoln, NE Journal-Star's HuskerExtra, per Pelini's last contract, NU is on the hook to pay him $7.65 million, owing him $150,000 monthly for the next 51 months. All assistants coaches, and football strength coach James Dobson, were on contract until January 2016. They would be owed a total of just over $3.1 million combined.

A press conference is scheduled for 1 p.m.

More coming...

Morning Wrap: Mariota Leads Oregon to Rout Over Oregon State

((ht: foxsports.com))

Marcus Mariota would be a humungous star if he played on the east coast. He's a pretty big college football star in his own right, but he plays out west, so a lot of people don't get to see him

They don't know what they are missing.

Mariota threw for 367 yards and 4 TD's and chipped in with 2 running TD's, leading the University of Oregon to a 47-19 rivalry week win over arch-rival Oregon State.

The Ducks jumped out to a 30-3 halftime lead and never looked back.

Two freshmen also stood out for Oregon, playing on State's home turf in Corvallis. Freshman RB Royce Freeman ran for 135 yards and fellow rookie Charles Nelson caught 2 TD passes as the Ducks moved to 11-1 overall, 8-1 in the Pac 12.

Oregon moves on to a date with Arizona in the Pac 12 Championship game next week, the winner likely will get a berth in the inaugural College Football playoff.

Morning Wrap: Alabama Survives Iron Bowl Track Meet

((ht: espn.com))

It was the highest scoring game in the amazing history of the Alabama vs. Auburn game.

A game won by Alabama 55-44 and which featured over 1100 total yards and at least two statistics guys who passed out from exhaustion. (just kidding--they really did combine for 1100+ yards though)

A game that featured Auburn QB Nick Marshall throwing for 456 yards and 3 TD's and featured Alabama star WR Amari Cooper catching 13 passes for 223 yards and 3 TD's.

And a game that had SEC fans nervous, because a Crimson Tide loss likely would have kept the SEC out of the inaugural College Football Playoff.

But the 101,000 + and a national television audience got to see a long, long game that went to the wire. It took Bama scoring 3 straight TD's in the 4th quarter to give the Tide their 11th win on the season while dropping the Tigers to 8-4.

Alabama will move on to play SEC Champ Missouri in the Georgia Dome for the SEC title. If they win that game, they'll be playing for a shot at the College Football Playoff title.

Auburn will be heading to a bowl game as 12 SEC teams qualified to play in bowls this season.

Morning Wrap: George Mason With the 75 Foot Buzzer Beater Win

((ht: george mason athletics))

Whoa!

George Mason basketball fans are still celebrating a crazy win over Manhattan Saturday night in an NCAA Basketball game.

The reason. Well, watch the video below.

Down 63-61, Manhattan's Shane Richards misses the back end of a 2-shot free throw attempt.

George Mason's Jalen Jenkins grabs the rebound, takes a couple of dribbles and launches the ball from about 75 feet away.

Yup, it goes in, the Patriots get the 64-63 win and chaos ensues in the George Mason gymnasium...

The Wilson-Holzer Fight Had A Twist

((HT: NHL Network/HockeyFights.com))

And it might mean another phone call from the league office for what happened at the 35-second mark

Korbinian Holzer might get a hearing over the punch, but anything is possible in the appeal- considering the idea that "Holzer didn't know what he was hitting at the time" would be his defense...

Should be an interesting test case for the NHLPA

Pre Game Scuffle: Louisville's Bobby Petrino vs. KY Assistant Dan Berezowitz

((ht: biglead.com))

Oh boy, this is rivalry week and during the buildup to said game, players sometimes do silly, stupid things like start fights before the game starts.

And on occasion the coaches get into it.

Saturday morning before the annual Louisville vs. Kentucky game the two squads got into a shoving match at or near midfield.

And it took while to get the players separated. But they finally dispersed.

The scuffle itself probably would not be that big a deal, outside the state of Kentucky, this isn't a game with huge implications.

But then some photos emerged---

Yes...that is Louisville Head Coach Bobby Petrino grabbing Kentucky assistant Dan Berezowitz by the collar.

We don't know yet what the game result will be, but we are pretty sure the highlights will not be better than this.

The only question is whether there will be fines involved...

And yes, some video leading up to that image exists:

OSG Prem: Spurs Under FA Charge For Lack Of Crowd Control

((HT: DeanCoombesAnfield))

Crowd invasions are a part of the whole European football experience- the HQ gets that.

But the Tottenham-Partizan Belgrade match got completely out of hand with interruptions that, it turns out, were part of a Youtube prank.

Here's one of the invaders doing his thing

The game had 41-minutes of delays because of people running onto the pitch.

Players had to leave the pitch, go back into the tunnel, and come back out onto the pitch to complete the 1-0 Spurs win.

OSG High: Ga High School Football Playoff Ends on Last Second TD

((ht: NFHSNetwork.com))

Nothing like winning a High School Football playoff game with a walk-off TD pass.

Which is exactly what happened in the Mays (Atlanta, GA) vs. Jones County (GA) game in Atlanta Friday night. The two teams squared off in a state quarterfinal game.

Jones County leads 41-38 with :04 seconds left. But Mays has the ball on the 17 yard line.

QB Asahnia Adderhold drops back to pass, avoids a couple of pass rushers and as the clock hits :00, throws the ball into the end zone where Julius Whitehead makes the catch.

Game over, Mays wins 44-41...and moves on to the semi-finals.

ICYMI: Western KY Ends Unbeaten Run for Marshall 67-66 in OT

((ht: foxsports.com))

You can call a football game that starts with a pre game brawl crazy. But what do you call a game that started that way and ended on an overtime 2-point conversion making the final score 67-66?

That scenario played out Friday in Huntington, West Virginia as Western Kentucky put an end to Marshall's unbeaten run this season, beating the Thundering Herd by a point.

Western Kentucky QB Brandon Doughty threw for 8 TD's (Yes, 8) which topped the 7 thrown by Marshall QB Rakeem Cato.

The 8 TD's for Doughty gave him the lead for most TD passes in the FBS with 44.

Leon Allen ran for 237 yards and 2 scores for the Hilltoppers as well.

But the game did not end until the second O.T when after scoring last in the period, Hilltopper Head Coach Jeff Brohm decided to go for the 2-point conversion and the win. He did that because his kicker got hurt earlier in the game.

Doughty completed the conversion, hitting Willie McNeal in the end zone to win the game, give the announce team and statisticians a breather.

The loss for Marshall ends their unbeaten run at 11. The Thundering Herd were trying to become outsiders who got into the College Football playoff.

That idea ended sometime Friday afternoon.

Virginia Tech Still Owns Virginia, Keeps Bowl Streak Alive

Remember back on September 6th when Virginia Tech manhandled Ohio State 35-21 at the Horseshoe?

Who knew the Hokies would blow all their good karma that night in Columbus.

Since then Virginia Tech went 3-6 with the low point last week at Wake Forest not scoring a single point in regulation time and losing to the Demon Deacons 6-3 in a game that turned college football back to the leather helmet days.

With the bowl streak and a winning season in jeopardy Virginia Tech had to take care of business against bitter rival Virginia to reach those goals.

Plus the Hokies needed that good karma to return and somehow the Wahoos bring that out.

It was apparant the lady luck would wear the maroon and orange Friday night when down 20-17 Virginia's defense imploded when Mike Moore was called on a person foul penalty and then Henry Coley was flagged for pass inference.

Then with under 2 minutes left Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer hit tight end Bucky Hodges for 50 yards to the 10.

A play later Brewer and Hodges connected again for a nine yard touchdown as the Hokies prevailed 24-20.

"I've said all along I really like this football team," Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer said after the game.

Frank Beamer has liked this football team despite the unexpected and inexcusable losses but with all the injuries the Hokies have suffered on the offensive line, defense and at running back it was hard to keep a consistent line up out there.

What had Beamer beaming after the game was the Hokies kept some streaks alive:

22nd straight bowl appearance.

11th straight win over Virginia.

"I try to look at it the way it is: to me, this group of players has done a great job," Beamer said. "This coaching staff and this group of players has done a great job with the circumstances as far as personnel in and out. ... We've had to overcome some things."

Yet here is Virginia Tech going to a bowl game after all that.

It must be karma.

Mickey Rourke Won A Boxing Match At Age 62

Ray Rice Reinstated, Will Anyone Dare...???

((HT: WJZ-TV))

The HQ saw this coming a while back...

When it appeared that the NFL had gone after now-former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice in a double jeopardy sense after the assault of his then-fiancee, Janay Palmer, in an elevator we thought the second suspension constituted what we thought.

Overzealous activity...

So, yes when judge Barbara Jones heard the case as an arbitor, we figured this would be her response:

"In this arbitration, the NFL argues that Commissioner Goodell was misled when he disciplined Rice the first time. Because, after careful consideration of all of the evidence, I am not persuaded that Rice lied to, or misled, the NFL at his June interview, I find that the indefinite suspension was an abuse of discretion and must be vacated," Jones' decision stated.

"I find that the NFLPA carried its burden of showing that Rice did not mislead the Commissioner at the June 16th meeting, and therefore, that the imposition of a second suspension based on the same incident and the same known facts about the incident, was arbitrary," Jones also wrote.

"The Commissioner needed to be fair and consistent in his imposition of discipline.

"Moreover, any failure on the part of the League to understand the level of violence was not due to Rice's description of the event but to the inadequacy of words to convey the seriousness of domestic violence. That the League did not realize the severity of the conduct without a visual record also speaks to their admitted failure in the past to sanction this type of conduct more severely."

Here's the rundown from Baltimore...

Now, the larger question: Will anyone hire him for the stretch run this season or will there be some kind of collusion/adverse reaction to public opinion that will keep Rice unemployed in the NFL...???

The HQ thinks the latter...

For a while...

Arizona Bears Down On The Territorial Cup & Wins Pac 12 South

All the chips fell for the Arizona Wildcats today.

UCLA was upset at home by Stanford 31-10.

Nobody in Arizona Stadium knew that because Wildcat head coach Rich Rodriguez ordered that the score of that game not be shown on the stadium scoreboard.

All the focus was on Arizona State.

Then today at Arizona Stadium the Wildcats defeated arch rival Arizona State 42-35 to claim the Pac 12 South title.

“I didn’t know if this would happen in year three." Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez said.  "But I knew it could happen, otherwise I wouldn’t have come here."

Did you hear what Rich Rod said?  He told the players in the locker room the Wildcats may have three games left to play.

Rodriguez believes Arizona has an outside chance of breaking into the College Football Playoff.

But first thing's first.

Here we are, we’re where we want to be, playing for a Pac‐12 Championship."Rodriguez said. "Our goal every year is to win the Pac‐12 South and then win the Pac‐12 Championship. We don't talk about much after that because we don't know.”

Arizona State could never figure out Nick Wilson who was the top Cat on the field.  Wilson rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns to lead the way to the Pac 12 Championship game for Arizona.

Nebraska Lineman's Ass Blocks Punt

There are no words that can describe this blocked punt.  Let the pictures do the talking.

That's right.  Sam Foltz's fumbles the snap from Nebraska long snapper Josh Faulkenberry throwing off the timing.  Then when Foltz tries to boot it he does right into the backside of 6-5, 305 pound teammate Zach Hannon.

Iowa's Drew Ott scooped up the blocked punt and ran it in for a touchdown.

Another oddity in the Heartland rivalry of Nebraska and Iowa.

Morning Wrap: LSU Beats Texas A and M on Apparent No-Call

The Texas A and M Aggies are not happy this day after Thanksgiving.

The are mad because they feel a no-call by the referee's cost them the game Thursday night vs. LSU.

Driving down the field with less than 2 minutes left in the game, the Aggies lined up to pass, when it appeared that LSU's nose tackle may have jumped---albeit barely--offsides.

The whistle did not blow, but Aggie QB Kyle Allen did what he thought was the right thing and continued the play, throwing a wounded duck of a pass that was picked off by a Tigers Defensive Back.

Quite honestly, LSU should have won the game easily. They dominated time of possession, holding the ball for over 41 minutes.

Fabulous freshman Leonard Fournette ran for 146 yards and an amazing TD, where he ran over an A and M safety like he wasn't there.

The win moves LSU to 8-4 on the season, 4-4 in the SEC West. A and M drops to 7-5, 3-5 in the SEC West.

Both teams will be playing in Bowl games this December.

Reports: Chad Morris Will Be The Man at SMU

((ht: usatoday.com/sports))

Let the Coaching Carousel begin. Reports began surfacing Thursday night that Clemson's offensive coordinator and target of many a job rumor Chad Morris may have a head coaching gig lined up.

The job: At SMU.

Yes, the same SMU that is 0-10 with little chance of winning a game this season.

USA Today Sports says Morris, a former Texas High School coach would replace June Jones who left on his own after two games this season.

USA Today says SMU has no deal in place with anyone, but it sounds an awful lot like one is being negotiated.

It should be noted Morris is also the highest paid assistant in College Football making over $1.3 million a year.

Read the USA Today story RIGHT HERE

If indeed Morris is the man in Mustang land, it lends more credence--and fuel to the rumors that his current boss, Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney may be the man at the University of Florida.

Which would create all kinds of chaos as the December college coaching carousel begins to swirl in full motion...

TCU Crushes Texas 48-10 And Improves It's Street Cred For CFB Selection Committee

In the beauty pageant that is the College Football Playoff the TCU Horned Frogs is starting to look
much prettier without the beer goggles.

On Thanksgiving night the Frogs took care of business and then some against the Texas Longhorns.

TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns and the Horned Frog defense intercepted Texas quarterback Tyrone Swoops four times leading to a 48-10 rout over the Longhorns.

It was TCU's longest margin of victory over Texas in Austin since 1956 when the Horned Frogs won 46 - 0.

TCU's defense was dominant forcing six Texas turnovers and taking advantage with 30 of the Frogs' 48 points coming off those Longhorn miscues.

"You just can't turn the ball over."  Texas head coach Charlie Strong said. "It's one of those where you have to play good, clean football. We didn't play clean football tonight."

If game control is a strong metric for the College Football Playoff selection committee than TCU should impress.

The Horned Frogs jumped on Texas for 13 points in the first quarter and then put their foot to the throat of the Longhorns in the 4th quarter with 28 points.

TCU supporters are wondering is this what you have to do to break into the final four of the CFB Playoff.

"To me, everybody was talking about how important Texas was, about how good they are, at the beginning of the year."  TCU head coach Gary Patterson said.  "You know, you've got to keep with the same story, you can't say now that they are not any good. I mean, three quarters of the United States was picking Texas to beat us tonight. You can't be like now Texas is not any good. They are a really good football team,"

'I think the whole team came in with the mindset of being ready to play." TCU wide receiver Josh Doctson said.  "Obviously I'd be lying if we weren't aware of style points and all that, but just came out and played TCU football and did what we had to do."

"At the end of the day, if you're talking about the playoffs, it's really not up to us." TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin said.

A 38 point win over Texas in Austin should carry some weight when the committee meets again and releases their poll Tuesday night.

Next up for the Horned Frogs is a home game against Iowa State and unfortunately that game won't do much for your body of work.

Headbutt In The Hallway Gets Brandao A Month In Jail

((HT: Turk TV/ProSoccerTalk, JPW))

Never let it be said that the eye in the sky don't lie...

When Bastia was playing PSG a couple of months ago, this happened as Brandao was waiting for Thiago Motta in the tunnel

Brandao claimed that Motta bad-mouthed him on the pitch and he waited for his shot at revenge.

The French Federation suspended him for six months, but prosecutors got their pound of flesh- a month in jail plus an undisclosed fine.

OSG Championship: Whelan Charged By FA Over Racist Comments

((HT: SkySports/Beanyman Sports))

Not that this is a surprise...

But ever since Wigan chairman Dave Whelan hired Malky Mackay as his new manager to stop the hemorrhaging of the Latics. Currently, they're next-to-last in the table with only 18 points on the season so far- clearly, nine points above Blackpool but in the logjam in the relegation zone.

So, Whelan hires Mackay who is under investigation for sending racist and anti-Semitic text messages in his time as manager at Cardiff City last season. Then, Whelan says on the record to The Guardian newspaper: "I think Jewish people do chase money more than everybody else."

Whelan also said he did not view the word 'chink' as offensive. It was the term by which Mackay allegedly referred to Cardiff owner Vincent Tan in one of the text messages under review.

From the Guardian newspaper and David Conn at the time:

Asked whether he did not think what Mackay said was offensive, because the claim Jews “love money” has been used as a negative stereotype, Whelan said: “Do you think Jewish people chase money a little bit more than we do? I think they are very shrewd people.”

Asked if he himself believed that, Whelan, the 77-year-old multimillionaire and former owner of JJB Sports, said: “I think Jewish people do chase money more than everybody else. I don’t think that’s offensive at all.”

He then apologized...

The FA said in response: "It is alleged the Wigan Athletic chairman breached FA Rule E3[1] in that his comments were abusive and/or insulting and/or constitute improper conduct and/or bring the game into disrepute.

"It is further alleged that this is an 'Aggravated Breach' as defined by FA Rule E3[2] as it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or nationality and/or religion or belief."

Whelan said he will quit if found guilty by the FA. He has until December 5th to respond to the charge.

The HQ didn't think the season could have gotten any worse for the Latics, but we think it will.

Quebecor Buys Remparts: Is This The First Step...???

((HT: Montreal Gazette))

The HQ believes it is, yes...

For a reported $20-25 million pricetag, Quebecor Media has picked up the QMJHL's Quebec Remparts franchise and will move them into their soon-to-be-constructed Quebecor Arena in September 2015.

This should be the first step in proving, once and for all, that the city is ready for multiple franchises on multiple levels in an integrated fashion not seen yet (top to bottom) in a franchise farm system.

"The Remparts organization has passion, hard work and success in its DNA. We are honoured to become its owners, and we want to continue this ‘sacred’ tradition by keeping the Remparts at the same level of excellence while providing the best possible experience for Quebec City hockey fans,” said Québecor president and CEO Pierre Dion.

The Remparts have been busy in the past week doing things like this against Sherbrooke
((HT: HockeyFightsPlus))

They're currently third in the East Division- four points out of first behind Rimouski and Baie-Comeau.

“I am very happy to see that the Remparts will have the chance to inaugurate the new arena next season and continue the Vieille Capitale’s great junior hockey tradition,” said Quebec Major Junior Hockey League commissioner Gilles Courteau.

Virginia's Mike London Will Return As Head Coach In 2015

Any speculation that Virginia head coach Mike London was going to be axed should the Cavaliers
lose to arch rival Virginia Tech Friday has been squashed.

Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage announced today that London would remain as Virginia's head coach for the 2015 season.

"It was important to see improvement in our football program this season,” Littlepage said in a statement released by UVA media relations. “I’ve seen signs of progress in many areas. Through the staff changes made over the last two years, we are better at teaching the game and in the overall development of the student-athletes. We also continue to notice the commitment by this group of coaches and student-athletes to their academic and community responsibilities."

The Wahoos have improved to a 5-6 season and will be bowl eligible should Virginia defeat Virginia Tech Friday night for the first time since 2004.

“I trust the plan Mike has in place and believe his leadership provides the best opportunity for Virginia football to be successful in the future.” Littlepage said.

FBI Investigating Threat To The Grove

((HT: University of Mississippi))

Here's the note from the school in its entirety:

A handwritten note threatening damage to trees and shrubs in the Grove at the University of Mississippi and signed "Hail State/Go to Hell TSUN" was turned over to the Jackson office of the FBI today (Nov. 26) by UM Police Chief Calvin Sellers.

The note, which arrived on campus late Tuesday (Nov. 25), said:

"What's going to happen to ya'll on the field Saturday Aint nothing compared to what's going to happen on your beautiful campus. You won't be one of the most pretty campus's Next year. A lot of shrubs and trees are going to die; especially in the grove. Can't stop us" (signed) "Hail State Go to Hell TSUN."

Law enforcement authorities are taking the threat seriously and are encouraging fans to report suspicious behavior, Sellers said. In addition, he said, law enforcement resources have been added to address fan safety inside and outside the stadium.

"This longtime football rivalry has separated families and friends for generations, but while it's spirited, our attention has been focused mostly on the football field," Sellers said. "We encourage everyone to remember that this is a game, after all, not a time for hate. We are hopeful that passions have not escalated to the point that someone is prepared to do damage to a landmark for which all Mississippians take great pride."

Bengals Devon Still Accused Of Not Paying Child Support

((HT: Local12/Cincinnati))

If true, one of the feel good stories of the NFL season has just gone down the crapper.

And when Gloria Allred is involved, you know there's going to be a lot of noise surrounding it.

Allred is the attorney for Channing Smythe, Devon Still's longtime girlfriend, who broke up with Still after his daughter Leah was born in 2010. Leah's fight with childhood cancer has received national attention through the Cincinnati Bengals keeping Devon Still on the roster so he could pay for her treatments under the NFL insurance policies.

Now, there's talk that Devon Still has been behind in his child support payments to Smythe. Allred is asking the league to investigate the claim that Smythe hasn't seen any money from Still since August.

An article in the New York Daily News' Michael O'Keeffe brought forth the allegation

Devon Still has released a statement:

"My daughter's battle with cancer has been inspirational to many all over the world. When she gets older, I want her to be able to look back and read about her positive impact on the world, not about the private issues her parents were going through. I am not going to retaliate against the mother of my daughter, and the untruthful reports in the New York Daily News article, by criticizing her character. I am going to continue to allow the court system to handle this matter, as it has been doing these past couple of months."

The Dirty Dozen and Bottom of the Barrel: Turkey's Aren't Rivals Edition

Because of course they can't fly. But rivalry games, they live on forever. And this week, after last weeks overwhelming spate of Cupcake games, we get rivalry week. Where there is actually a lot at stake.

Okay, cupcakes, donuts...we couldn't find a clip of Homer saying cupcakes...

Anyway, so many big games, so much Turkey, so little time.

About last week. Well, we had a pretty good week, but there weren't a lot of tough picks. We called the Arkansas game, but missed on Kansas State/West Virginia.

Eh, it happens. We still went 13-1 for the week, which is pretty good and put us at 126-30 for the season, which is damn good.

But enough about us...it's time as the legendary Casey Kasem says to get "On With the Countdown"...

THE DIRTY DOZEN:

1) Florida State 11-0. Ok, yeah, we know, they've barely won against inferior competition. But they won. And that is the point. Will they win it all--who knows...but there's something to be said for running the table.

And that's the bottom line. Will they beat UF this week. We're tempted to pick an upset this week, but we won't do it here. This Week: vs. Florida, Our Pick: FSU 31, UF 21

2) Alabama 10-1. Last week doesn't count. But it doesn't matter, the Tide have gotten better every week. Do not underestimate them. Ever. Amari Cooper's status may have an impact, just not this week. This Week: vs. Auburn, Our Pick: Bama 47, Auburn 34

3) Oregon 10-1. Okay, the Duckies are West Coast good. But does that translate? We don't think so. Still, aside from the Arizona hiccup, they've been good. But the defense isn't, and that's what will cause them to eventually lose. This Week: at Oregon St.. Our Pick: Oregon 45, Oregon St. 42

4) TCU 10-1. No, we don't know why they struggled with Kansas. But they did. Still, they've been impressive in most other ways. Not their fault there's no Big 12 title game. And yes, we know, they lost to Baylor. This Week: at Texas, Our Pick: TCU 27, Texas 21

5) Mississippi St. 10-1. Yes, they lost to Alabama. But are they REALLY a CFB Playoff team? That is the question. We think if you don't win your conference you should not be eligible. But apparently the committee does not. Oh well. This Week: at Ole Miss, Our Pick: Ole Miss 31, Miss St. 27 UPSET!!!

6) Ohio St. 10-1. The most improved team in CFB. Bar none. And they may jump into the Final 4. Would not surprise us a bit. They may be the most dangerous non-SEC team in it. This Week: vs. Michigan. Our Pick: tOSU 48, Michigan 17

7) Baylor 9-1. Sure, we're the only ones with the Bears ranked this low. So what? Yeah, we still see them as soft. And outside the TCU and Oklahoma games they haven't played anyone. Next week vs. K-State will be telling. But we're not there yet. This Week: at Texas Tech, Our Pick: Baylor 53, T-Tech 21

8) Georgia 9-2. When dialed in, one of the most dangerous teams in CFB. But, since team Brain Fart lived up to their name, they need help if they want to be a spoiler. Love Nick Chubb, because of him, they'll be good for at least 2 more years. This Week: vs. Ga. Tech, Our Pick: UGA 43, Tech 21

9) UCLA 9-2. Finally, they're playing like everyone expected them to at the beginning of the season. Big win last week vs. USC. If they somehow ended up in PAC-12 title game, they'd be a tough out for Oregon. This Week: vs. Stanford, Our Pick: UCLA 28, Stanford 23

10) Kansas St 9-2. Jake Waters picked a good week to have a career game vs. W.Va. 400 yards is a pretty good accomplishment on the road. And yes, the Wildcats still might have a voice in who makes the CFB 4. This Week: BYE

11) Arizona 9-2. Rich Rod has done wonders here. The Wildcats best season in a long, long time. Anu Soloman has been a revelation at QB, leading the team in rushing and passing. He's thrown 25 TD's already this season. This Week: vs. Arizona St. Our Pick: Arizona 37, Az State 31

12) Michigan St. 9-2. The Spartans look great on paper. And have only lost to Oregon and Ohio St. Of course they were the only two tough games they've played too. The Big 10...yeah, not so good. And that hurts these guys. This Week: at Penn St., Our Pick: Mich St. 31, PSU 21

THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL:

It's been a challenging season for our Bottom 5. The list has changed slightly. We boosted defending champ Miami of Ohio out of the list after two wins, but you could still argue they belong here. If we did a Bottom 10, they definitely would be on that list.

But nobody could stop SMU. The Mustangs truly were unstoppable in their march to the Toilet Bowl. No wins and offensive output that...um, was truly offensive gave them an unbeatable edge.

We should give special mention to Georgia State, winners of 1 game the past two seasons. Guys, you better get your acts together. You may become permanent residents. And we are thinking about naming the trophy after you....

Yes, we know the season is not over, but it would be a shock if any of these teams actually win...

5) New Mexico St. 2-9. What's a bottom poll without a New Mexico team. The Aggies started out with 2 wins and followed that with 9 straight losses. But hey, the season is almost over--so there's that. This Week: at Arkansas St., Our Pick: Ark St. 47, New Mexico St. 21

4) Kent ST. 1-9. You know you are bad when your game gets snowed out, postponed and there's no interest in making it up. The Flashes are one of the worst offenses in the game. And the D isn't much better. Hopefully there's no snow in Ohio this week. This Week: vs. Akron, Our Pick: Akron 21, Kent St. 10

3) Idaho 1-9. Yes, they beat NM State. But they've not beaten anyone else. To their credit, they've been competitive. Sort of. It doesn't make up for the record. And they play in the Snowy Appalachian Mountains this week. This Week: at Appalachian St., Our Pick: Appy St. 35, Idaho 21

2) Georgia State 1-10. Sigh. Yes, they play here in OSG's hometown. But nobody knows it. For good reason. The poster children for how NOT to become a FCS level team. They'll be a punchline for a very long time. There was hope after an opening week win. But, then...yeah...reality. This Week: vs. Texas St., Our Pick: Texas St 37, Ga. St 17

1) SMU 0-10. Yes ladies and gentlemen, your champs. Sure, they have two games left, but do you really think the Mustangs will win either one? Nah, neither do we. Though they do play UConn to end the season so there's a chance...maybe. This Week: vs. Houston, Our Pick: Houston 47, SMU 10.

And so ends the week in College Football. Championship week is almost upon us...

But until then, we hope you all have a Happy Turkey and all the trimmings...we'll talk again next week.

Enjoy your new music cut of the week:

Morning Wrap: Coyotes Center Scores Game Winner For Avalanche

((ht: nhl.com))

Talk about a crappy way to lose a hockey game. This one may take the cake.

The Colorado Avalanche got a 4-3 overtime win Tuesday night vs. The Arizona Coyotes. The reason they got the win--

Coyotes center Martin Hanzal deflected a pass by Colorado's Daniel Briere into the net, past Coyotes Goalie Mike Smith.

Game over.

Briere gets credit for the goal even though he wasn't trying to score and Hanzal holds his head in shame.

BUZZER BEATER: Alex Tuci's Touch Inside A Game Winner For Manhattanville

Here's a buzzer beater from NCAA Division III.

With 2.7 seconds left in the game there's only enough time for a catch and shoot.

The inbounds pass goes inside to freshman Alex Tuci who hits the turnaround at the buzzer for the game winner for Manhattanville 56-54 over SUNY-Brockport.

Love the tiny intimate gym at Mahattanville College.

Tuci finished with 11 points, one of 3 Valiant scorers in double figures.  Juan Camacho led the Valiants with 16 points.

Uh Oh: Richard Sherman and Doug Baldwin Take Shots at NFL Media Policy

Oh, this is not going to end well. But it is quite a good laugh never the less.

Check out Seattle Seahawks DB Richard Sherman and teammate, WR Doug Baldwin making their statement about the NFL's attempt at a media policy.

The pair were making a point after teammate Marshawn Lynch was fined $100,000 for avoiding Seahawks media availability 6 weeks in a row.

The Tacoma News Journal shares the video:

Sherman, a spokesperson for Beats headphones makes a very good point. Players don't get paid for talking to the media. They get paid for sponsorships. Sherman and others have been fined for wearing Beats, because they aren't an NFL sponsor. The players get angry about that.

He's not wrong, and it's a fine line that the NFL has to dance trying to accommodate local media requests with their sponsors.

The league and the media have clashed before as the NFL has tried at various time to limit accessibility. It's failed because the local reporters fought back.

But the players should not be forced...or fined if they choose not to talk. That should be their right. There are players that will always talk and having spent a good chunk of our career in Sports, sometimes you take whatever you can get.

And if you have a specific request, you go through media relations. If they still choose to not speak to you, you find someone else to do a story on.

Is The NHL Heading To Vegas...? It May Be Being Shot As We Write...

((HT: VegasChatter))

This isn't the first time that the HQ has floated this story, but the idea is that the WorldWideLeader is already looking at the story and may be shooting a "30 for 30" with the Maloof Brothers.

Without an arena and a team...

But...

Vegas Chatter is saying that the "Birth of a Franchise" story is already being shot with the development of the new AEG arena front and center. The arena, set for opening in spring of 2016, would be the apparent home for a new sports franchise- when its completed.

Two weeks ago, NHL Number Two Bill Daly was asked about Vegas by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

Las Vegas is intriguing, Daly admits. In fact, out of curiosity, Daly queried a bunch of service industry folks — bartenders, waiters, drink servers, dealers, pit bosses — last weekend about whether they felt a professional sports team could thrive there.

“I got a variety of different responses,” Daly said. “The demographics of the market are pretty good in terms of average annual income. Las Vegas natives earn good salaries, good livings. I think they genuinely like sports. It’s a nighttime city, so it would have to be uniquely scheduled in terms of focusing maybe on industry nights as opposed to your typical Thursday-Saturday nights where everybody would be working.

Must Listen: Rick Neuheisel Sings the "I Don't Know" College Football Playoff Song

((ht: danpatrick.com))

We actually watched the simulcast of Dan Patrick's show Tuesday morning and were kind of half paying attention when former UCLA head football coach and current Pac 12 Football analyst Rick Neuheisel joined the show.

Figuring it was just going to be jibber jabber about the Pac 12, who is gonna win and who should be in the College Football playoff, we had no idea what was coming next.

Neuheisel, quite the troubadour, while on the phone, apparently grabbed his guitar and starts playing a song.

That song, sung to the melody of a Jimmy Buffet favorite named "Volcano", is called I don't know. And yes, we know, the words are changed to mirror the chase for the college football playoff.

It was impressive--

Morning Wrap: New Double A Baseball Team Named after Oysters

((ht: cbssports.com))

Wait, what? The headline says this story is about Oysters? Or does it?

One of the great things about Minor League Baseball is you often get some crazy team names and some wacky promotions.

The latest: A new Southern League (Double A) team in Biloxi, Mississippi. The team is an affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

And Monday night, they debuted their new name....

Yes...the Shuckers...feel free to come up with your own jokes...

Yes, your eyes do not deceive you, they have a "B.S" cap logo. Or at least they are planning on having one.

Personally, we think they should have a jersey featuring hot sauce, saltine crackers and beer, but that just may be us...

You might want to add biscuits to, especially on June 15th when the Shuckers travel to Montgomery, Alabama to play the Biscuits.

I'm getting hungry just thinking about that game.

Morning Wrap: Chiefs Berry Out With Possible Cancerous Mass in Chest

((ht: kcstar.com))

We wish Kansas City Chiefs Safety Eric Berry the best. And hope what he is dealing with is done and taken care of quickly.

Berry was put on the Chiefs non football illness list Monday evening after complaining to team trainer Rick Burkholder of pain in his chest area.

An MRI, along with a PET scan  found a mass on the right side of his chest which doctors believe may be a lymphoma (an immune system cancer).

Here's video from the Kansas City Star of Burkholder discussing what is happening:

Berry will head home to Fairburn in metro Atlanta area and be examined at Emory University Medical Center, one of the nations leading cancer research centers. Doctors are expected to do a biopsy once Berry is able to get back home.

Having covered Berry back in his days at Creekside High School and interviewing him while he played at the University of Tennessee, we can say that he truly is one of the classiest, well respected kids we ever covered. And we are quite sure that he will conquer this.

The soft-spoken Berry released a statement via the Chiefs website:

“I am truly thankful for all of the support from family, friends, coaches, teammates and the entire Chiefs kingdom. At first I was in shock with the diagnosis on Saturday and did not even want to miss a game, but I understand that right now I have to concentrate on a new opponent. I have great confidence in the doctors and the plan they are going to put in place for me to win this fight. I believe that I am in God’s hands and I have great peace in that. I know my coaches and teammates will hold things down here the rest of the season and until I am back running out of the tunnel at Arrowhead. I am so thankful and appreciative of being a part of this franchise and playing in front of the best fans in the NFL. I will be back!”

We also want to note--if you go to the Chiefs website to read the statement...the 1st comment on the page is from the San Diego Chargers and team owner Dean Spanos. A very well said offer of prayers and respect.

Defense Strong and Anquan Boldin Stronger As The 49ers Grab A Win

((HT: BASTA Bay Area/Baichwal))

The 49ers came out strong today, in their usual style, with a strong defensive performance coupled with a solid offense. The entire team seemed to click, especially the defense, as they went out and began the game by forcing a three and out then scoring a touchdown. This three and out involved a nine yard sack by Aldon Smith, on the second play of the game, proving that he is unquestionably back to football and ready to return to his form and play amazingly. He seemed extra quick on the field, working extremely well with his fellow Smith, tackle Justin Smith, to basically hassle Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III through the game. In total, he finished with two huge sacks today, giving him two sacks in his first two games of the season. He looked great on the field, and fortunately seemed to work well with Ahmad Brooks, who was benched for the second half of last week’s win over the Giants, because he felt that his playing time was being cut into too much by the returning Smith. Today, however, both players managed ample field time, and they were both strong points in the 49ers’s overall stellar defense.

After Aldon Smith’s sack and Washington’s three and out on the drive, the 49ers picked up the ball with great field position on their own 41 yard line. From there, Kaepernick looked stellar leading the offense, as he managed to get the 49ers into the end zone with only five plays: three passing and two rushing. On this drive Kaepernick connected with Anquan Boldin twice, for 18 yards and then a beautiful 30 yard score to give the 49ers a 7-0 lead. This touchdown came on a gorgeous corner route, where Kaepernick perfectly landed the ball in Boldin’s hands for the easy score. You can view this touchdown below:

Anquan Boldin’s 30-Yard Touchdown Catch

After this score, the game was quiet for a while, as neither team scored until the second quarter. Until Washington’s score, the 49ers defense was perfect, as they forced RGIII and the ‘Skins to punt to end all four of their offensive drives. Unfortunately, this perfection had to come to an end, as the defense allowed Washington’s rushing attack to get going, allowing a one-yard rushing touchdown to tie the game 7-7.

The 49ers looked like they might lose the game momentum with this score, but they were extremely efficient to end the first half. With 5:33 to go in the half, they began a long drive from their own seven yard line that eventually resulted in a field goal. They ran twelve plays to pick up 70 yards, including six pass plays, four rush plays, and one sack. The highlight of this drive came on fourth and two at Washington’s 48 yard line. Vernon Davis was only able to pick up 12 yards on the previous play, even though the 49ers needed 14 for the first down after the sack. However, in his usually aggressive style, coach Jim Harbaugh decided to go for it on fourth and two, with only eleven seconds remaining. Kaepernick executed another brilliant pass on this play, this time a 25 harder to Michael Crabtree for the first down at the Washington 23. In a beautiful feat of athleticism, Crabtree rose up, snagged the ball, and managed to land both feet barely inbounds before tumbling to the ground out of bounds, keeping possession of the ball all the way. This play may have been the highlight of the game, due to both its importance and sheer athletic beauty. You can watch the brilliant catch below, beginning at 1:10 in this highlights video:

Game Highlights (Michael Crabtree’s 25-Yard Catch)

Going into halftime, the 49ers had now regained the momentum, and the lead, with a 10-7 score. Unfortunately, as has been the theme this whole year, they came out of halftime looking a whole lot worse than they did going in. The 49ers were held scoreless in the third quarter, with three rather ugly possessions. The 49ers were forced to punt twice, the first on a three-and-out, and Kaepernick threw an interception on a questionable pass intended for Boldin. To his credit, Washington had just put a rookie cornerback into the game, so Kaepernick wanted to test him, and see if Boldin could power through him for easy yards. However, he overthrew this specific ball to Boldin, allowing the rookie defensive back to come up with his first career interception. Also, on a side note, this interception was Kaepernick’s first in 129 passing attempts, as he has been really good as of late at not making errant throws. Hopefully, this one interception can be chalked up to a little bit of overeagerness in going after the rookie, and it should be a single mistake that is not repeated, as Kaepernick has made great strides in his control this year.

To begin the fourth quarter, this trend of fruitless offense continued, as the 49ers almost immediately punted again on a three and out. On the next offensive drive, Frank Gore actually fumbled the ball, in an incredibly unexpected moment. This is Gore’s second fumble of the season, with his first happening last week against the Giants. Once again this fumble was very unusual, as Gore is usually a very sure-handed back, and all of the laudatory comments made last week about the veteran still apply. Last week, I wrote:

“[Frank Gore’s] fumble was his first of the season, and it is very possible that it will be his last, simply because he has averaged 2.5 fumbles per season in his last four. Frank the Tank is called a tank for a reason: he is strong and sturdy. So, the 49ers coaches and their fans should put this fumble behind them if they have not already, as Gore is still a stellar running back and the workhorse for the 49ers.”

Obviously, Frank Gore just fumbled again today, therefore he did fumble again this season, but he is still Frank the Tank, and he is still an extremely strong and sturdy running back, and one of the most reliable in the league.

Gore’s fumble today, was also the 49ers’ second fumble of the game, as Carlos Hyde had one on the first play in the second quarter. Both running backs fumbled today, but Hyde’s fumble is the only one that deserves any worry, as he is a rookie running back and each and every one of his moves needs to be scrutinized, to make sure he can really be the future franchise rusher for the 49ers. Fortunately, this fumble was Hyde’s first of the season, so there is no need to worry about his fumble either. Overall, neither of these fumbles were very noteworthy, as neither Gore nor Hyde’s playing time will be affected, and the 49ers still managed to come away with a win.

Also, on a positive note, Washington were extremely inept at capitalizing on the three turnovers they forced. Simply the fact that they forced three turnovers off the 49ers was surprising, for two reasons, however. Firstly, this is the largest number of turnovers the ‘Skins have forced this season. Secondly, the 49ers were +10 in their turnover differential coming into today’s game, and only +8 leaving it, due to the fact that they gave up three turnovers, and only earned one of their own. Hopefully this sloppiness was just a fact of today, as the 49ers prey on turnovers, and their season is made or broken based on this statistic. Back to the positive note, Washington only managed three points total off of their three turnovers. More specifically, they only earned one field goal that came after a long drive following Gore’s fumble. So, although the turnovers hurt the 49ers statistically, they were not too big of an issue in the game, especially seeing as the Niners still came away with the win.

After the ‘Skins field goal, they went up 13-10 on the 49ers. This score fortunately did not last long; however, as the 49ers scored on their next offensive drive. This drive was 75 yards long, and it took eight plays, four passing, three rushing, and a sack. This sack came on the first play of the drive setting the 49ers back six yards. An interesting statistic is that Colin Kaepernick has been sacked 15 times on first down this season, the most in the league. Although this number sounds menacing, its simply an interesting fact, and nothing to get too worried about. From here, the 49ers managed to create a slow and steady, but successful offensive drive, as they broke into the end zone on a Carlos Hyde four-yard touchdown run, in a little under five minutes. This score gave the 49ers a 17-13 lead, and the final score for the game.

After this touchdown drive, the 49ers defense was strong again, as it prevented the ‘Skins from scoring. They forced one punt, but unfortunately the offense was not able to completely drain the clock due to the fact that Washington had and used all three of its timeouts. However, they very quickly ended Washington’s final drive, with a resounding defensive play. Justin Smith sacked RGIII hard from the back, forcing him to cough up the ball, right into the waiting hands of Ahmad Brooks. Brooks caught the ball to recover the fumble at the Washington seven yard line, sealing the game for the 49ers. This play was huge as it gave the 49ers the win, but it also gave Brooks a large role in the win, showing that the 49ers administration still trusts him, even after his questionable sideline antics last game. This fumble was also a sack, and it was the fifth one that the 49ers managed on Griffin III, as they completely dominated the ‘Skins offensive line.

From a statistical point of view, the 49ers completely dominated the game today, except in turnovers and rushing. They managed 246 passing yards to Washington’s meager 77, and their offense was generally more fruitful. However, Washington’s star running back Alfred Morris had a field day as he picked up 125 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Even so, if you add up all of the ‘Skins’ offensive yards, you only get to 213, as they were generally held in check.

Colin Kaepernick was pretty good today, and probably better than his stats show, as he finished the game 20 of 29 for 256 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception. He also rushed for 14 yards on nine attempts, but the Washington secondary mainly kept his rushing game in check. Anquan Boldin was the favorite target of Colin Kaepernick today, as he was a monster on the field. He recorded 137 yards and a touchdown, catching nine of his twelve targets, including one where he took a helmet-to-helmet hit, where the safety fell down dazed, but kept running to pick up five more yards. Boldin is a monster, and almost super-human when he gets going, and today was one of those days as he put on a showcase on the field. Michael Crabtree also had a reasonably good day today, although it pales in the face of Boldin’s, as he caught five of seven targets for 58 yards, including his stellar one mentioned above. Fullback Bruce Miller also had a respectable day, working hard as the all-around player that he is, and picking up 40 passing yards while catching all three of his targets.

On the other hand, the rushing attack was rather weak today, as Frank Gore only picked up 36 yards on 13 carries, and Carlos Hyde had a similarly poor day with 16 yards on seven attempts. Add to the fact that they each fumbled the ball once, and you get to a really quite poor day for the rushing attack today. Hopefully, they can get back to running the ball well, without fumbling at all, as they will need their rushing attack to be strong this Thursday, for the Thanksgiving matchup against the division rival Seattle Seahawks.

The Seahawk’s beat another division foe, the Arizona Cardinals today, giving them the same 7-4 record as the 49ers. Currently as it stands this is the NFC West standings:

1 Arizona Cardinals 9-2

T-2 Seattle Seahawks 7-4

T-2 San Francisco 49ers 7-4

4 St. Louis Rams 4-7

The Rams are effectively out of the playoff chase, but all of the other NFC West teams have a legitimate chance at making it. Today, the Seahawks proved that even the Cardinals, who are tied for the best record in the NFL, are mortal, and they pushed them down to a still stellar 9-2 record. The Seahawks and the 49ers play this Thursday, and the winner of this game will most likely be in the lead for a wildcard spot in the NFC. Currently, both teams are tied for the second Wild Card spot, and it is very possible that three teams from the NFC West make the playoffs, with both Wild Cards in this division. Above all, it is imperative that the 49ers win this Thursday, as a loss will make the road to the playoffs exponentially harder. So, hopefully, they can win this Thanksgiving, to keep their playoff hopes alive, while also defeating the hated Seattle Seahawks.

NOTE: We will not be addressing the Washington football team by their current official name due to its highly offensive nature. We will instead by addressing them by their city or a nickname, until the organization changes its name. This move is part of a boycott effort that is being followed by many people and organizations, including entire television stations, like CBS, and ex-football legends. We respectfully ask that the Washington team changes its name, due to the fact that it is currently a racial slur against Native Americans.

DEVELOPING: Pat Quinn Passes At 71

((HT: Sportsnet))

The HQ really wanted Pat Quinn to come back to Atlanta and be coach and GM of the Thrashers at some point considering the amount of work he was able to do in turning around the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs.

But, alas, it was not to be...

The man who turned around those two squads has passed away and will be remembered for his toughness on the ice and relentless pursuit of perfection in constructing teams off it.

Here's how Sportsnet told Quinn's tale...

Tough dude who demanded results- and, most of the time, he got them...

ICYMI: UNC Football Spray Paints Duke Locker Room and Practice Field After Win

((ht: heraldsun.com))

Oh geez North Carolina football, can you not act like you've won a game before?

The Tar Heels had much to celebrate this past Saturday. The team beat arch-rival Duke, spoiling the Blue Devils ACC title hopes on Duke's home field. And the win got the Tar Heels bowl eligible.

But it's what happened afterwards which forced UNC head coach Larry Fedora and athletic director Bubba Cunningham to offer a full-fledged apology and offer restitution.

The reason: The Tar Heels spray painted the visitors locker room and practice fields at Duke's football practice facility next to the stadium.

The damage is estimated at over $25,000.

Cunningham and Fedora have spoken to their counterparts at Duke and offered their apologies as well.

Our partners at the ACC Digital Network provide the reason for Saturday's over zealous celebrating:

ICYMI: Batman vs. Riddler in ECHL Hockey Fight

((ht: cbssports.com))

Haha! This really happened. And it was short, but went exactly like it would have if this were the old Batman TV show.

Check out what happened during "Heroes Night" Sunday, as the ECHL's Toledo Walleye took on the Evansville Ice Men in Toledo.

The Walleye dressed up and played in the old Batman costumes, the Ice Men dressed as the Riddler. And late in the 3rd period, with the Walleye up 6-1, Kevin Harvey of the Ice Men and Cory Lampl of the Walleye got into a skirmish.

Harvey, dressed as the Riddler got a bunch of punches in, but Batman a.k.a Harvey ended up with the takedown.

The next six weeks will be very interesting on the air up there...

Carrier Dome Sets Indoor Hockey Attendance Record

((HT: WSYR-TV))

With a little over 31,000 in house for a doubleheader involving SUNY-Oswego and, then later, an AHL game between Utica and Syracuse.

Here's the fan perspective

The old record came from Tampa and was during the Lightning days when they played at the Suncoast Dome.

Worst Game Ever: Wake Forest Beats Va. Tech 6-3 in 2 OT's

We post this only because it's a contender for the worst College Football game ever.

Wake Forest beat Virginia Tech 6-3 in 2 overtimes Saturday in an ACC Football game that may have redefined the term "Winning Ugly".

We should also add at the end of regulation, the game was tied at 0-0.

And while the game only featured 4 turnovers, 3 by Va.Tech, it also only featured 488 yards of total offense. Samaje Perine of Oklahoma ran for 427 and accounted for 446 yards by himself in his game.

The only intriguing storyline here, how many missed field goals would be kicked before someone made one. Tech only missed in, by Joey Slye in the 1st OT. Wake's Mike Weaver missed 3.

And while Slye finally made one in the 1st OT, Weaver hit one in each of the OT periods, enough to get the win.

Both the Hokies and the Demon Deacons punted 9 times each, and not a touchdown was scored in a College Football game for the first time since 2005. We should note, neither of the teams in the 2005 game play in an alleged "Power 5 Conference".

Wake coach Dave Clawson said after the game "We put offensive football back 100 years". We say, this brand of football, in this game...was extremely offensive if you actually tried to watch it.

We will spare you the game highlights...mostly because there weren't any and just show you video of the Weaver's game winning kick and the celebration...

Wild Finish In Hawaii - Last Second Touchdown Wins It For Rainbow Warriors 37-35 Over UNLV

With one second left in the game Hawaii quarterback Ikaika Woolsey threw it up for grabs in the end zone and receiver Marcus Kemp out jumped UNLV's Tajh Hasson to haul in the game winner for the Rainbow Warriors 37-35.

"You know I’ve been coaching for a long time and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a win like this." Hawaii head coach Norn Chow said.

"Automatic" Aquayo Saves Florida State's Season.

FSU's Roberto Aquayo's Game Winner
Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo is known in Tallahassee as "Automatic Aquayo".

He had to be on a rainy afternoon at Doak Campbell Stadium kicking his first game - winning field goal of his career.  A 26 yard field goal that sailed through the uprights and saved the Seminoles defeating Boston College 20-17.

“To win a game, I’d never felt that feeling,” Aguayo said.

So the undefeated season remains intact.  The winning streak has reached 27 games but with the three point win over a pretty good Boston College team the game control wasn't there.

You got to have that to impress the College Football Playoff committee.

We're undefeated." Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said.  "We finish every game. Everybody else in the country has not finished at least one game. We've finished every one of them. Isn't that the object?"

Yes it is however game control seems to carry more weight that just winning it.

College Football Playoff selection committee chairman Jeff Long said on Tuesday night: "It's more of, the committee watches the games and then we discuss the game and we talk about whether the game was a back-and-forth contest, whether someone assumes control in the game early and keeps it throughout, (or) whether they assumed (control) in the second quarter or the third quarter or the fourth quarter and controlled it to the end."

If game control is your metric of where teams should be ranked than Florida State slipped again.

Saturday's opposing head coach, Steve Addazio sides with his conference rival.

"The object is to win football games and find a way to win and they have obviously
done an unbelievably great job of doing that, that’s what I really look at." Addazio said. "They play in a Power 5 conference, I think one of the better Power 5 conferences, and week in and week out they find a way to win."

"We were downgraded every time we blew someone out last year, so think of the irony of that." Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston said.  "If we win the game close, we're bad, when we blow someone out, we're bad."

“Florida State is the number one team in the country." Addazio said.

The bottom line is all Florida State has to do is finish in the Top four of the CFB Playoff poll and they are in.

You would think though that the only undefeated team in major college football would be the number one seed, conference affiliation be damned.

Florida and Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship Game remain on Florida State's schedule and both games will be difficult to control from the kickoff on.

Judging from the Seminoles past performance close games are the norm.
