ICYMI: 65 Footer at Buzzer to Force 2nd Overtime, Marist Wins

((ht: espn.com))

Don't know how we missed this one, because based on the highlights, it was a sight to see.

Marist and Iona played a game Thursday night that will live in folklore for a long, long time. The Red Foxes and Gaels went to overtime and Marist trailed by 3, when Chavaughn Lewis launched a 65-foot runner as time ran out.

It went in.

Chaos ensued, the game was tied and the 2 teams went to a second overtime. They went back and forth and Marist got the win after a last second 3-pointer by Iona's Sean Armand was missed.

Words do not describe the ending well enough, so check out the video from ESPN.com:

Iona Recruit Killed Defending Friend In Shootout

((HT: WLS-TV))

Former Chicago Public Schools basketball star Michael Haynes was shot multiple times and died from his injuries as he tried to break up a fight over a necklace...

"He was an innocent victim, very loved by everybody," Haynes' cousin, Kandice Blouin told the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper. "He was our meal ticket. He was going to heal this hood and they took his life."

Haynes, a 6-foot-7 forward, played for Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, last season.

"The Iona family is devastated with the news on Michael's passing," said head coach Tim Cluess. "His passion, energy and excitement for his opportunity this year makes this tragedy even more upsetting. Our sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Here's the story from Chicago...

Haynes' uncle, Robert Kimbrough, told FoxChicago that he hopes the police find the shooter before the family and friends do. Kimbrough also said that his nephew was only standing up for his friend who couldn't stand up for himself.

The HQ knows that kind of philosophy is dangerous, but not entirely uncommon for some neighborhoods. We also hope for Kimbrough's sake, the cops get the shooter first.

OSG Buzzer Beater: Miracle For Manhattan, Andujar's 3-Pointer With 1 Second Left Is A Winner For Jaspers

On the way to New Rochelle, NY to play MAAC rival Iona the bus transporting the Manhattan basketball team broke down. The Jaspers arrived to the game a typical of New York City, in taxis.

With eight minutes left in the game Manhattan was down 17 points to the Gaels but rallied to tie the game at 72 with the ball with one second left.

Manhattan had a chance to shoot down Iona and Jasper freshman forward Emmy Andujar seized the moment draining a 3 point shot with one second left to win it 75-72.

Here's the highlights from what appears to be two cameras attached to the roof. (Thanks Jaspervision)

Andujar finished with 17 points. George Beamon lead the Jaspers with 21 points.
