((HT: Sportsnet/CP))
And all of this comes from the projected owner of a Quebec City team heading there...
Former Canada MP Brian Mulroney is now at the front of the line with the bid. Peladeau's Quebecor, Incorporated purchased the naming and management rights to a new arena where a team would be based and the C$400M cost is supposed to be split between the province and the city- a deal that was supported by the Parti Quebecois before the 2012 provincial election.
And now Peladeau has announced he's running as a PQ candidate- working on the province's independence...
Here's analysis of that move...
((HT: CTV News))
)
And here's the Peladeau announcement... in French...
)
Mulroney, by the way, is vice-chairman of the Quebecor board.
"Commissioner Bettman and (ex-)prime minister Mulroney have spoken directly for quite some time, without intermediaries," Quebec City mayor Regis Labeaume said when he was asked about the Peladeau move into politics.
Here's an in-depth interview with Peladeau, and yes Tish, it's in French...
)
So, now, without any kind of divestiture needed by Quebecor and having Mulroney as the public face on the hockey front... keep an eye on the Florida Panthers from this moment forward...

Florida Panthers Ask For More Public Dollars...Is Quebec City Watching...???
((HT: Sun Sentinel/Wallman))
And, now, we finally have it...
The Florida Panthers, the southern-most outpost for the Gary Bettman expansion into the Sun Belt, is finally asking for public funds to keep them in town...
Are you watching Quebec City...???
The team claims they're losing at least US$20-million a year and are asking for a rewrite of their contract with the city of Sunrise.
The building was brought forth in the late '90s for just under US$190-million.
It's still being paid off... for another 14 years...
More from Wallman:
Under the proposed change, for the 14-year balance of the current contract:
•The Panthers would shed the $4.5 million annual payment; it would be picked up by the county.
•The county would contribute $500,000 a year toward maintenance, and would pay any of the property insurance tab that exceeds $1 million.
•The Panthers would swap the land it has rights to build on, 12 acres south of the arena, in favor of 22 acres on the arena's north side, where the Panthers hope a casino-hotel or some other development could be built and brought onto the tax rolls.
•The Panthers would immediately repay $10.6 million in loans the county granted them in recent years.
•The Panthers would continue contributing $500,000 a year to the Convention and Visitors Bureau.
•The Panthers would commit to investing in hockey team payroll "at a level competitive with the rest of the National Hockey League."
Short of Buffalo, Calgary, Colorado, and the New York Islanders, the Panthers are near the bottom in NHL payroll numbers with a cap figure of just over US$60-million.
Even teams like Columbus are spending more these days...
It will be interesting how Vinnie Viola, the Panthers owner, responds if the Sunrise council goes against the idea of less money in hand in the present for more dollars in the future...especially, if the Panthers continue to flounder in the Eastern Conference as they have for the better part of the last decade...
Kinda what they were asked to do when the BB&T Center went on line in the first place...
Here's what the Panthers did last time out- beating the Sabres (doesn't everyone...?)
((HT: MSG))
So, if I was anyone from Sun Media, I would keep a keen eye with everything going on in Florida- because, the rest of the hockey world knows you're ready...

NHL To Seattle Sometime Soon...???
((HT: Mitch Levy/950KJR Radio))
Mitch's Twitter has been busy Tuesday evening...
He has people (and we all know how influential and accurate "people" are) that are telling him that NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is telling the Board of Governors that, when the Arizona Coyotes sale goes through and is approved, an expansion team is recommended to go to Seattle.
Here's the series...
The current MOU would undoubtedly need to be tweeked to keep the arena on track
The ownership group that was interested in buying the Phoenix franchise remains in play here, amongst others.
All of this contingent upon 1) a solid ownership coming forward and buying the team and 2) the new arena staying on track to be built
If approved, the new expansion Seattle NHL club would cost approximately $275M. It would begin playing here in the 2014-2015 season.
The end game here is that, if the arena stays on track, the city would be attractive for an NBA franchise when the NBA expands- as is anticipated when the new television contract comes up for discussion...
Ownership groups would, obviously, include the Hansen-Ballmer group that has (currently) lost out on an NHL franchise.
And this also brings up the question for franchise 32- Quebec City or Markham...
The HQ thinks Quebec with the Sun Media connections and the framework that's in place...
Here was the conversation from June when Seattle mayor Mike McGinn admitted talking to Commissioner Bettman about the league in Seattle when the Coyotes were in the discussion...

NHL Kinda Admits Glendale May Have Problems (UPDATED With Seattle POV And Bettman On Seattle)
((HT: TSN))
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and Commissioner Gary Bettman had their press conference of the "State of the State" in Chicago before Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. And they're now admitting that there might be a problem in Phoenix with the Coyotes and their lack of an owner.
Maybe...
Maybe big enough to do something about it...
Like move them... or something... if a new ownership group (aka- Renaissance) can't reach a deal to keep the team in Glendale at jobing.com Arena.
Commissioner Bettman said at the press conference that "time is getting short" finding a solution to keep the team in Arizona. And Daly admits that the new schedule release will be pushed back because of the Coyotes' situation- and there might not even be a team to call Phoenix's next season...
"It certainly means that it's possible that the team won't play there next year," Daly said.
But the place where the Coyotes could land- if at all- is an unknown...
Asked if there must be some kind of an answer by the June 27 NHL Board of Governors meeting, Bettman told the assembled media "maybe."
You'll recall that Daly and Bettman held meetings with the Glendale City Council late last month- separately, not as a group of seven. Some say that the reason was to avoid the Open Meetings Law in the state of Arizona. Others say it was because the scheduling just... didn't... work... out...
Choose your version...
The city of Glendale is budgeting only $6-million where the Anthony LeBlanc-led group Renaissance Group is looking for a figure closer to $15-million. The city is looking to award the contract for managing jobing.com by June 25th. Four companies have bid, but none of the names have been made public.
Which is another problem in Glendale...
All this could go down...
Two days before the BOG Meeting...
Here's Dan Bickley talking about the shenanigans from a while back...
((HT: azcentral.com))
“The puck is in the City of Glendale’s end,” NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. Indeed... PM UPDATE: Chris Daniels from KING-TV in Seattle, who monitored the whole SacKings to Seattle idea, has checked with the folks that run Key Arena... through his Twitter... Deborah Daoust spokesperson for Seattle Center, says ice making equipment and chilling system at #KeyArena is still operational Key Arena hosted a 'Stars on Ice' show back in 2012. Obviously, not hockey. Daoust also says the Key Arena dates, that were being held for an NBA team, have been freed up. Not being held for any other reason So, the short version is that Seattle looks like they're clearing the runway just in case... And, so is Quebec City... Quebecor Media Denies NHL Pursuit... This Time...
Of course, the same can be said about True North Sports and Entertainment when they pursued the Atlanta Thrashers two-plus seasons ago...
And, eventually, played nice with the National Hockey League, bought the team and moved them to a good home...
Through their Twitter account, which might mean there's a reason to deny, the big wigs in Quebec City at Quebecor Media decided to say something...
The rumour that Quebecor is currently in negotiations with the #NHL to buy a franchise is completely false.
The statement doesn't say they haven't- just that they aren't at this very minute... even as Rejean Tremblay of QMI told 98.5 Sports in Montreal:
"A team is in place to clear the ground, lawyers, accountants to audit the affairs of the Coyotes," said columnist Réjean Tremblay on 98.5 fm with Paul Arcand on Wednesday.
One would lend itself to think that the National Hockey League is trying to figure out if the folks who are currently "negotiating" with the NHL for the Coyotes- the Anthony LeBlanc group- are serious... or just more serious than the Darin Pastor group that got stiff-armed by Bill Daly and everyone else associated with the NHL.
According to FOSG Dan Bickley, from a few weeks ago:
LeBlanc’s group – Renaissance Sports and Entertainment – has raised $240 million, or $70 million more than the NHL’s asking price. It is committed to absorbing $40 million in losses over the first four years, with an out clause if the economics don’t improve.
The group would immediately re-sign Don Maloney and Dave Tippett, arguably the best general manager/coach tandem in the NHL.
But the lease for Jobing.com Arena may be the killer for anyone who wants in on the Coyotes. The Arizona Republic claims that operating costs are around $6-million where LeBlanc is looking to get something in the neighborhood of $15-million. If LeBlanc is out, then would it be the return of Matthew Hulsizer or would Quebecor finally get their chance to make an easy move to Quebec City...???
CEO Pierre Karl Peladeau would love to match Bell and Rogers to get a chance to play with a big boy toy like an NHL franchise. There's only so much work that can be done in and around the Montreal Impact...
Reg Sherren did a piece for CBC's "The National" exploring how the return of the Jets could help the return of Les Nordiques...
Tremblay, who had a one on one with the Bettman last year with QMI, had this quote:
"If ... if ... if ... if ... a franchise was available, there would be three factors to consider. One, the owner. Two, the arena. And three, the market. That is how we must analyze the demands and make a decision."
Check, double check, triple check...

And Start The Coyotes Relocation Talk Again In 3,2,1... (UPDATED W/New, Old Pursuers- Thursday and Friday)
Darren Dreger over at #TSN was releasing this info tonight on his Twitter:
NHL continues to fight to keep Yotes in Glendale, however, relocation decision could take place before the playoffs.
Quebec City, Seattle and Kansas City among relocation sites. Aside from conference issues, Que City appears best fit. Far from done deal...
Aaron Ward followed up:
NHLPA source, expect decision to come before start of playoffs.Gone is Glendale $25M subsidy
It looks like the city is tired of dealing (finally)... the Coyotes are 13th in the west, last in the Pacific, and came into Wednesday losers of four in a row...
They're next to last in attendance figures for home games- only 780 people or so over the Islanders- at just under 80-percent capacity.
Here was the Greg Jamison speech in front of the Glendale City Council back in November...
And the initial introduction of Jamison by Commissioner Gary Bettman as the savior du jour during the playoffs last season...
But, then, surprising no one really... everything hit a snag... and Jamison would never announce who his partners are/were as of a month ago...everything crapped out... Jamison was supposedly working on a new deal, but there's nothing imminent...
((HT: ABC15))
So, remember where we were last month... two months ago... last year...???
Well, we're back to where we started... only thing is JoJo is in Tucson...
Hey, they were close...
Thursday Update: Per OSG Sources in Arizona, AltaCorp Capital chairman & CEO George Gosbee is working with Anthony LeBlanc on @NHL_Coyotes purchase... so, we're back there...
Yep. Ice Edge is back with Gosbee- for those of you unfamiliar: Gosbee founded AltaCorp Capital, a new Canadian investment bank in 2010. As well, he is co-chair of AIMCo (Alberta Investment Management corp), a $70 billion investment fund. Sportsnet's John Shannon thinks a proposal could be done by the beginning of next week after the Easter holiday.
Friday Update: Darin Pastor, via press release, decided to throw his hat in the ring...
If the name rings a bell, it's because his grandfather and uncles owned the Buffalo Bisons in the 50's, 60's, and '70's.
"If we have an opportunity to acquire the franchise, we will do everything we can to make sure it stays in the great city of Glendale and continues to enhance the Phoenix metropolitan area."
Pastor is currently founder and CEO of Capstone Affluent Strategies- whatever that is...

Are We Going Back To Ice Edge And PHX...??? Majors Or Minors...???
If you pay attention to Keith McCullough and his Twitter feed...
Super secret: Ice Edge Holdings is not done with The Phoenix Coyotes yet - we love hockey and its fans
Could this be the group that outgoing Glendale owner Elaine Scruggs was talking about that they wanted no part of...???
Arizona Republic beat writer Lisa Halverstadt reports that if the Greg Jamison deal goes through, he would have no problem knocking off a few million dollars from the first-year subsidy from the city- from $20-million to $17-million.
By the way, Halverstadt is mandatory reading...
The issue with all of the subsidies is, currently, the city of Glendale is on the edge of a $35-million budget shortfall for the next fiscal year.
The subsidies are supposed to be $20-million for the first four years and $15-million for the 2017 year.
Councilman Phil Lieberman is asking Tea Party members to show up for the next City Council meeting to protest any kind of subsidy- at all...
But if it's not the NHL and the Coyotes, it may be the minors instead...
Halverstadt came across an (Ice Edge/Lakehead Yale partner) Anthony LeBlanc e-mail from April 1:
He added that the group had “conceptually mapped out” alternative plans for the arena including long-term management of the arena, the purchase of a franchise to replace the Coyotes, a plan to increase the number of events at Jobing.com and a plan to “most benefit (Westgate City Center) and the City of Glendale as a whole.”
LeBlanc said he had talked with the National Hockey League about his plans, and got their approval to pursue the matter in more detail.
All that in order to try and prevent this for the second straight year

BREAKING: Quebec City Getting New Arena
((HT: CBCNewsNetwork/youtube/Sportsnet))
It's official...
Mayor Regis Labeaume of Quebec City says the $400-million arena project they've been discussing is going forward with a completion date of September 2015 and should seat 18,000 or so.
The folks at Quebecor met a deadline of March 31st to get the naming rights of the arena that doesn't exist and get to manage it when it's built. Labeaume was asking for matching federal funds (as you see below), but in the interim it's on Quebecor, the province, and Quebec City to fund it...
Somehow...
Here's an interview CBCNN's Heather Hiscox had discussing the idea a few months back...
And here's Sportsnet's experts discussing the matter as well...
Marcel Aubut is quite a confident man... isn't he...???
But there is some fine print... if a franchise shows up, Quebecor pays (about) twice what they would if one never shows.
