Former Auburn Hoops Player Indicted For Point Shaving

((HT: WSFA-TV))

Kyievarez "Varez" Ward is alleged to "have conspired with others to bribe or solicit one or more individuals to influence a sporting contest, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 371."

Translation: Two counts of point-shaving while he was playing for Auburn...

Ward and teammate Chris Denson, were suspended before the February 25th, 2012 home game against the Arkansas Razorbacks after allegations of poor play involving point-shaving.

Denson was questioned and was cleared.

Auburn University Athletics issued a statement shortly after Ward's suspension:

"Auburn officials were made aware of a rumor regarding an allegation two weeks ago and immediately reported it to the FBI, the NCAA and the SEC. Because of the nature of the allegation, Auburn is not in a position to make any further comment on the situation."

Of course not...

Ward attended Montgomery-Jefferson Davis High School and is no longer enrolled at Auburn.
Here's what Tony Barbee saw in Ward from his time at Texas...

Ward Looked At For Possible Point Shaving On The Plains

And the HQ is talking about Auburn...

And once the topic was brought upto TBH, she laughed quite heavily and wondered aloud: "Why anyone in the hell would want to shave points with Auburn basketball. Don't people know we aren't that good this year...???"

And she is quite accurate in that regard...

Charles Robinson and Yahoo!Sports broke the story surrounding Varez Ward and two games in particular: the losses to Alabama on February 7th and Arkansas on January 25th. Chris Denson was suspended along with Ward before the February 25th game against Arkansas, but Denson returned for the next game. Denson was questioned and cleared of involvement in point shaving...

But the HQ thinks that, since he probably gave important information in the dealings with Ward, he was reinstated post haste...

"The NCAA takes any allegation of point shaving very seriously because sports wagering threatens two of our core principles - the well-being of student-athletes and the very integrity of intercollegiate sport," the NCAA said in a written statement Thursday. "As allegations of point shaving, if proven, are also potential federal crimes, the NCAA will defer action until any process with the FBI has concluded."

"Auburn officials were made aware of a rumor regarding an allegation two weeks ago and immediately reported it to the FBI, the NCAA and the SEC," Auburn said in an equally-written statement. "Because of the nature of the allegation, Auburn is not in a position to make any further comment on the situation."

Naturally...

Paul Finebaum, when asked by WBRC-TV in Birmingham said, "I think the first reaction is one of shock. You rarely hear of point shaving in relation to college athletics. I can't remember a case, a major case in probably 15 or 20 years."

He's probably thinking of the Arizona State case...

Here's how this affects the campus...

Not Enough Info For Hawai'i Point-Shaving Investigation

((HT: KHON-TV))

Right now...

University of Hawai'i President MRC Greenwood alerted all of us that on November 3rd, the office of admissions received an anonymous letter alleging "point shaving" by unnamed football players.

The statement said "recognizing the seriousness of these allegations, UH leadership acted promptly and responsibly by immediately alerting the HPD and providing the letter to them."

Rob DeMello stands off to the side with details...

But, after their initial digging around on campus, they haven't found anything to warrant any further digging at present...

On his show on the four-letter this morning, Colin Cowherd said he contacted some of his sources in Las Vegas. They admitted on three occasions this season that there was significant line movement that benefitted some heavy-hitters, but there was no mass betting that helped out a lot of bettors...

Maybe there is smoke after all...
