The rain came plowing through the streets of Toronto yesterday and the IndyCar series was supposed to have two points races over a weekend. The whole weekend got condensed after two false starts and matching red flags.
How bad did it get...??? The pace car didn't even escape...
And in the second restart, Will Power ended up backwards...
The races were supposed to go two hours or 85 laps each.
The weather has moved everything to 65 laps and 90 minutes each Sunday.
But the cars didn't even get out of Lap 1 before wrecking everyone from 10th on back as rookie Luca Filippi got into Simon Pagenaud. The first race was red flagged Sunday as well while they cleaned up Turn 10.

BREAKING: Hunter-Reay Wins Indy 500

An American driver has won the 98th renewal of the Indianapolis 500 in the second closest finish in the history of the event.
Ryan Hunter-Reay gives Andretti Autosport its 3rd win for car owner Michael Andretti in a finish over Helio Castroneves with four racers finishing in the top 6 overall. Andretti admitted RHR ran a perfect last 6 laps for the win and Helio said post-game, laughingly, that it's still a good day when finishing second sucks.
Two drivers who had a shot, James Hinchcliffe and Ed Carpenter, caused the contenders to thin out a little bit with 26 laps to go
And a Townsend Bell crash with ten to go caused a red flag situation with all the debris on the track
After the track was cleared, it came down to Hunter-Reay and Castroneves

Was Inaugural Indy GP Worth It...?

It was an interesting challenge for an entity that is still looking for an identity.
Trying to restore a bit of the roar to the month of May in Indianapolis, the folks at IndyCar decided to have another race on the IMS property. In the pre-schism days of open-wheel racing, the entire month was packed with fans in the stands. Every day of qualifying and practice had full stands and that it nowhere near the case nowadays.
Now, the stands are fairly empty and the idea was to find a place holder for the Formula 1 race.
Thus, the Grand Prix of Indianapolis...
Running clockwise on the front stretch and on the inner portion of the old F1 track, it meant that the standing start would be interesting as well...
Good enough for a surprising winner as well...and an injury to the mayor at the start when pole-sitter Sebastian Saavedra stalled at the beginning...
Here's WISH-TV's video of Ballard waving the flag for start and getting clipped...

DEVELOPING: Dario Is Done, Doctors Say He Can't Race...
The four-time IZOD IndyCar Series champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner has been told by doctors that he has to hang up his steering wheel...
The accident he had in Houston, pretty much wrapped it for him...
Here's part of the statement released from his own website:
One month removed from the crash and based upon the expert advice of the doctors who have treated and assessed my head and spinal injuries post accident, it is their best medical opinion that I must stop racing. They have made it very clear that the risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long term well-being. Based on this medical advice, I have no choice but to stop.

DEVELOPING: Dario Franchitti's Car Disintegrates In Houston, Fans Injured By Debris (UPDATE)

This, really, was not the way that people wanted the race to have any highlights in Houston with the IndyCars...
Two angles... Dario Franchitti and Takuma Sato got mixed up...
And here...
IndyCar reports that Franchitti is alert and being transported to the hospital. Team owner Chip Ganassi is saying that his driver is okay with some soreness, bumps, and bruises... unconfirmed reports have the number of injured spectators at 15...
“I asked how he was doing, and he said, ‘Eh.’ His ankle is sore, and his back is sore, and he will be taken to the hospital. But he’s OK,” Ganassi told NBCSN's Kevin Lee...

1730 UPDATE: According to the Houston Fire Department, at least 13 people were injured. Two of the 13 spectators injured were sent to local hospitals while the rest were treated at the scene by EMS, according to Senior Captain Ruy Lozano.

Dixon Calls Crew Accident A "Dick Move..."

Scott Dixon had a bit of an issue during the last round of pitstops at the IndyCar race at Sonoma...
He kinda ran over (or ran into) some of Will Power's pit crew...
Dixon alleged that Power’s crew had moved into Dixon’s pit space and in fact jumped in front of the New Zealander on exit.
((If you looked at the video, the HQ agrees that it was more like the on-air diagnosis where someone was carrying groceries off their hip down the street...))
After the restart, Dixon was assessed a drive-through penalty for what was deemed a "pit lane violation" and was at the back of the field after he rejoined.
Dixon finished 15th.

Racing Icon Economaki Dies At 91

ESPN's Ed Hinton is spot on in his assessment of all us media types that decide to do something motorsports-based in our lifetimes... on two fronts...
1) Those of us who grew up watching IndyCar or NASCAR in their infancies in television were impacted by what analyst and expert Chris Economaki talked about when his mic was open. It was the history and the context that we all needed without any kind of shenanigan thrown in. He made the point and elevated it at the same time.
And,
2) there are a lot of young people in the business today who have no clue who Economaki is (or was) and have no idea about his impact on the business and its context.
Economaki passed just shy of his 92nd birthday. Here are some of what we learned and how we figured out how to talk about it...
Like the 1973 Indy 500...
The lessons... know your stuff... backwards and forward...
He'll be missed... no question...

Edmonton Indy Is Toast For Now... Will It Stay Or Will It Go...??? Austin, Are You Listening...???

The Edmonton Indy Car race is done until further notice after the current promoter, Octane, pulled out and the city says they won't find a replacement- and they'll eat the costs they fronted to make the race happen in the first place.
The last Indy, probably, left a sour taste in the mouth of everyone in Alberta province as relayed by the Edmonton Sun's Terry Jones:
"Colin Livingston pointed out, on the record, all the warning signs to your correspondent a week before the race in July.
"Livingston, owner of CanTorque, a business based in Edmonton, said what he was seeing bothered him greatly.
“There has been a great neglect in the marketing, promotion of the race is even worse than Northlands,” he said. “This year, specifically, it looks like they are trying to run the race for free. There appears to be next to no budget for promotion or marketing of this thing. They just operate the race. And they do a great job running the race. But my concern is there’s not going to be a race left here to operate.”
The big beef being that an outfit in eastern Canada was in no shape to run something in the west... and everyone in town seems to be right... There didn't seem to be any promotion, any signage, any advertising, or anything else that would make a race (a very popular race at that...) available to the city.
Jones seems to think Michael Andretti could step in like he did in Baltimore or Kevin Savoree who ran the Toronto Indy.
The HQ thinks that another city might have a stake in the future of that time slot... if they look at it hard enough... Austin, Texas and the Circuit of the Americas...
It would give the city another reason to claim a motorsports foothold in a series that is more North American than the overt corruption that seems to permeate the F1. And the HQ shudders at the thought of just how much money has gone F1's way to get a race to a college football town on a college football weekend the weekend before Thanksgiving. It reminds us of the IOC...
Who said that...???
The US Grand Prix will, no doubt, look pretty. Texans will make sure of it. But they really need to look to book the building for other clients and not just Bernie Ecclestone.
It just lends to too many questions in the long term instead of too many solutions to pay for the track...

Indianapolis Race Weekend Starts On A Bad Note...

The Freedom 100 is, usually, the first race of the Indy 500 weekend that is part of Carburation Day festivities.
It went the sum total of four laps before a wreck and a subsequent red flag...
Here's the incident...
The cars of Oliver Webb and Brandon Wagner took the biggest licks in the wreck while Emerson Newton-John, Peter Dempsey, and David Ostella all ended up being casualties...
There would be some four-wide racing with two laps to go, but the winner would be Esteban Guerrieri and Sam Schmidt Racing under a yellow-checkered situation after Jorge Goncalvez hit the wall on the back stretch at the same point of the five-car crash earlier in the race.

We are guessing that Chicago Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd won't be participating in this Sunday's game at home against the Seattle Seahawks.
The reason.
According to Federal Agents, Hurd tried to buy 5-10 kilos (not ounces) of cocaine and a half-ton of marijuana a week for distribution in the Chicago area at roughly $2.8 million a month. He'll be arraigned Friday afternoon and is currently being held in the Metropolitan Correction Center in the Chicago area.

The investigation into the death of Indy car driver Dan Wheldon October 16th at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway has come to a conclusion.
The report says Wheldon suffered a "Non-Survivable Injury" when his head hit a vertical post on the tracks catch fence.
The report goes on to discuss in detail the conditions of the track and the driving that helped create the problem. It pays particular attention to the large grooves on the LV Motor Speedway track.

IndyCar Has Drivers Meeting At IMS

A group of about 20 IndyCar drivers met at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with management to discuss safety in the wake of Dan Wheldon's death on the track in Las Vegas.
"We all got to talk a lot and listen a lot and look at how we can improve things going forward in all areas," Dario Franchitti said. "I think it was a very positive and productive meeting and that's the first step. We all want to improve things. It was a massive shock what happened to Dan last week. But we saw in MotoGP yesterday (where rider Marco Simoncelli was killed during the Malaysian Grand Prix) that racing is a dangerous business.
"How we react to this is critical and I'm very encouraged by what I saw today," Franchitti added. "There's still a lot of heavy hearts -- massively -- but everyone is very positive about the outlook. This is the first step and we'll move forward with it."
Kris Kirschner is outside IMS in the dark with a preview...
Randy Bernard, CEO of IndyCar, hasn't said much since the prepared statement he gave in Las Vegas announcing the passing of Wheldon. But Franchitti and other drivers admitted there's a long way to go...
“He had nothing to do with how poorly we were all driving,” Graham Rahal said...

Wheldon Remembered At Florida Funeral

Around 1,200 people attended the Florida funeral of IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon Saturday to celebrate his life and place in racing. His brothers were pall bearers and his father carried Dan's driving helmet in ceremony.
Wheldon's wife, Susie, released a statement on behalf of the family, inviting members of community to attend the service:
"Although the last few days have been unbearable for our family, the overwhelming love and support we have received are rays of sunshine during these dark days. The outpouring of sympathy and condolences has been so comforting, and I want to thank everyone for their kind notes, letters, gifts and flowers.
"Dan touched the lives of many people, and I would like to invite those citizens in our community who knew and loved my husband to attend his funeral service at the First Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg on Saturday, October 22, at 10 a.m.
"Though we won't be able to fit everyone inside, I know that Dan would have wanted the community to share in the celebration of his life and to grieve his passing. Thank you again. I am forever grateful for your kindness."

DEVELOPING: The Big One At Vegas Indy Takes Out 15 ((UPDATED: Wheldon Dies From Injuries))

Dan Wheldon is listed as seriously injured on lap 11 of 200...
The field is an uncharacteristically large 34 cars for the last race of their 2011 season. And, as you heard on the play-by-play, speed plus dirty air equals what went down for 15 cars...
Paul Tracy, who was involved in the wreck, said a team of doctors were working on Wheldon. A helicopter lifted off from the speedway, but there was no indication if Wheldon was onboard.

1715 UPDATE: Wheldon was taken by a Mercy Air helicopter from the race and airlifted to UNLV Medical Center. IndyCar Director of Competition Brian Barnhart has called a drivers meeting for an immediate time table in the Media Center.
Danica Patrick, on her way to the meeting, started to cry and could not answer questions.
Some drivers have expressed a concern about continuing the race because of conditions with speeds in excess of 224 MPH.
1745 UPDATE: A press conference audience has been assembled on the second floor of the speedway media center- no timetable has been set for any kind of announcement on any and all topics in the air at the moment...
The meeting between drivers and owners has concluded and no drivers will be addressing the media...
1800 UPDATE: At a press conference held by IndyCar officials, Barnhart announced that Wheldon has died as a result of the injuries from "unsurvivable injury."
The Vegas race will end with a 5-lap salute in his honor... according to a statement from CEO Randy Barnard, the 2011 Indy 500 race winner...

Dan Wheldon is listed as seriously injured on lap 11 of 200...
The field is an uncharacteristically large 34 cars for the last race of their 2011 season. And, as you heard on the play-by-play, speed plus dirty air equals what went down for 15 cars...
Paul Tracy, who was involved in the wreck, said a team of doctors were working on Wheldon. A helicopter lifted off from the speedway, but there was no indication if Wheldon was onboard.

Carpenter Wins Kentucky For Sarah Fisher
Sarah Fisher has been a car owner, a driver, and a mom... sometimes all at the same time in IndyCar.
This is the time of year when everyone knows who is going after the championship, and others are playing out the string.
Today, Fisher's Dollar General team, with Ed Carpenter behind the wheel, won at Kentucky. If there's been hard luck in the IndyCar series, Fisher has had it- especially in the bigger races.
We found out that Dollar General isn't coming back as Carpenter's lead sponsor, and Fisher is hoping they'll reconsider now since they only run a partial series to begin with...

DEVELOPING: Danica To Run NASCAR Full-Time Next Season...? Looks That Way...
According to Marty Smith over at the four-letter, it looks like Danica Patrick will be driving Nationwide full-time for 2012 and running select NASCAR events for Stewart-Haas in the same calendar year with the idea of her going full-time Sprint Cup for Tony Stewart by 2013's season...
A presser is being arranged at GoDaddy's HQ in Phoenix to announce the whole idea.
"Tony Stewart has always said he'd love to have her, but we're a long ways from being at that point," Stewart-Haas spokesman Mike Arning said Wednesday. "From a Stewart-Haas Racing standpoint, things aren't there yet."
No word on how this would clash with her running in the Indy 500 every year when and if this announced...
