Arkansas Continues Circling The Drain, Loses To Rutgers...

((HT: TodaysTHV.com))

The tailspin that personifies Arkansas football continues...
Against the State University of New Jersey... aka Rutgers...

Yep, Rutgers... at home...

Gary Nova threw for 5TD's on 397 passing yards even as Tyler Wilson returned after sitting out the Alabama game. Wilson responded with 419 yards and 3TD's and Cobi Hamilton had the game of his life catching 10 balls for 303 yards and the 3 Wilson scores.

But the Razorbacks defense gave up 525 yards to the Scarlet Knights and that won't win you many games- much less games in the Ess-E-Cee when conference play continues...

What do you wanna bet the 10-month contract with Johnelle stays a 10-month deal...???
And the HQ is still wondering what Jack Crowe is up to these days...???

Here's the rundown of the 35-26 loss...

How In The Blue Hell Does This Happen...??? Johnelle Is $20M In The Hole...

((HT: TodaysTHV.com/USA Today, Schroetenboer))

Arkansas coach John L. Smith's has filed for bankruptcy and it's not pretty.

Documents in the case show he has debts of $25.7 million and assets of just over $1.2 million.

Smith filed for Chapter 7 liquidation earlier this month after real estate investments he made in Kentucky went south while he was head coach at Louisville from 1998-2002.

His two biggest assets are retirement accounts worth about $600,000 each that he claims are exempt from liquidation. The largest debt listed is $20 million owed to a business in Louisville, called Terra Springs LLC. 2 banks claim almost $3-million owed to them and American Express says they're owed over $10,000.

Now we know why he took the quick money of the Arkansas deal- a 10-month contract worth $850,000. If he succeeded, he could get a big-money deal that could alleviate some of those issues...

The piece in the USA Today also has these nuggets: Smith lists $9,278 in monthly net income but $27,620 in monthly expenses, including a$11,666 note to Mushtaque Juneja, a doctor in Louisville, and $5,000 to four different law firms. Among other assets he lists: $5,000 in home furnishings,$2,500 in memorabilia rings and watches, $900 in books and pictures, $950 in clothing and accessories and $200 in golf clubs and a shotgun.

As much as in the case of Vince Young, the HQ simply asks "How in the hell does this happen...???" But we already know the answer... Here's FOSG Nicole Muracco with Johnelle before the Alabama debacle... ((HT: 5NewsOnline.com))

John L.Smith Wants You To Smile, Life Is Good

Three games into the John L. Smith era at Arkansas the Razorbacks began the season in the Top 10, lost to Louisiana – Monroe blowing a 21 point second half lead and looked really, really bad on national TV against Alabama.
Even though the Hogs are off to a 1-2 start, Smith wants you to smile. (Thanks Arkansas Sports 360)

Of course at halftime of the Alabama/Arkansas game Smith had this classic nugget.

I’m way to biased writing this since I was born and raised a Razorback fan.  The ULM sickened me watching the Hogs get Warhawked.  Saturday I was embarrassed watching this team fold to Jolly ole St. Nick’s Alabama team.
My chin will be up coach Smith and I’m a soldier in Razorback nation.  I hope I speak for all Razorback fans in asking that you just get this team prepared to defeat Rutgers, the Scarlet Knights are pretty good.

TWTW: Louisiana-Monroe Upsets Arkansas

((HT: ESPNU/youtube))

The Ess-E-Cee loses to teams in the Big 10/12 and the Sun Belt in the same day. The HQ is working on the other upsets and they'll be posted post-haste.

But the biggest one of the evening, after the Oregon State win over Wisconsin in Corvallis, is immediately the La-Monroe win at Arkansas.

Todd Berry and the Warhawks caused a lot of laughter amongst the stars with the 33-31 overtime win over John L. Smith and his Razorbacks. The last time something like this happened, Arkansas lost to The Citadel and Jack Crowe got fired the next day.

The jokes are already happening...

Can Petrino and Jessica Dorrell come back...? We'll give them their old jobs back and give them raises, too...

Watch the game highlights. (Thanks KTHV-TV, Little Rock, AR A $100 bet gave some lucky guy $5,750 in return and the Warhawks go back to Monroe $500,000 richer for their efforts. They did the same thing to Nick Saban a few years ago... remember the billboards that popped up...??? ULM QB Kolton Browning went 42-for-69 for 412 yards plus the game-winning score. And ULM also won time of possession by 18 minutes. The HQ will recap the injuries for Arkansas as well as we go forward... SUNDAY UPDATE: Courtesy of TodaysTHV.com

Ess-E-Cee Media Day Two: Another Five Schools Parade

((HT: WVTM-TV Birmingham))

Another five coaches decided to parade themselves in front of the more-than-1,100 media folks in suburban Birmingham...

Auburn head coach Gene Chizik was found wearing an orange-striped, pinstriped suit in front of all the lights there...

The HQ will give Chiz props for thanking everyone for doing their part on the incident in Auburn on June 9th. Here's some of his highlights...

Joker Phillips stood in front of the throng trying to make a poiont about drafting his future successes for the football team by using the obvious example- the UK basketball team...

MJ Perino has Joker's wild...
((HT: WLEX-TV Lexington))
LSU head coach Les Miles got to trot out new starting QB Zach Mettenberger- who the HQ knows all the way from his days at Oconee County High School. Miles had his pound of fun with the media, but he did not eat any grass or air clap in his suit... ((HT: WBRZ-TV Baton Rouge)) John L. Smith took the podium and wanted to reinforce his idea of taking an opportunity from Utah State to wander back and take over for Robert Petrino, Esq. He wants us all to know that he wants his players to make sure their piss is hot going into this season... ((HT: KTHV-TV/TodaysTHV.com Little Rock)) And, fifth and not necessarily last was Dan Mullen- the head coach at Mississippi State. He wants to make sure that his defense is the same- if not better and his offense behaves better than it did last year. ((HT: WJTV/Jackson, MS))

Arkansas Head Coach John L. Smith Facing Bankruptcy

Arkansas Head Coach John L. Smith
Arkansas head coach John L. Smith has some financial issues.  The downturn in the real estate market has Smith considering bankruptcy.
Smith told the Associated Press he is in the process of declaring bankruptcy, perhaps during the 2012 season.

Smith invested in real estate with other partners in Kentucky while head coach at Louisville from 1998 to 2002.  Those investments involved the development of a sub-division and evolved from there.

As the real estate market began to slow Smith and his investors were in a bind and become unable to meet their financial obligations.

Smith told the AP his investment was in the “multi-millions.”

``It was a situation where we all made a little and said, `Well, that's good. Let's see if we can make a little more,''' Smith told the AP. ``At that point, the bank was willing to give away money. We got in over our head with land, and then the bubble burst and all this land value dropped and we couldn't sustain it.''

John Mason, a former partner with Smith, declared bankruptcy in December 2011 in Kentucky.  According to the AP Mason listed liabilities totaling between $10 million and $50 million.
Smith is talking now because he doesn’t want this to be a distraction during the season.

When an investment goes good initially it can become very seductive.  Investing is much like gambling, you have to know when to cash out when the market peaks.

Smith has a paying job now and if Arkansas wins 10-11 games he may earn himself a much larger paycheck and a steady coaching gig.

That might recoup some of his financial losses.

Whose Backside Is Getting Hotter In College Football

HT: Dennis Dodd/CBS Sports.com
We are at the point where all the college football previews are coming out.  Those of us at the OSG HQ are working on ours.  It will be a good read.

While Internet surfing we came across this one from Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports.comDodd has his own unique system of rating the coach’s hot seat. Check out Dodd's hot seat ratings here.

Two coaches received 5.0 ratings which translates to “win or be fired”.  Both coaches who received that rating were from the SEC.
Here’s our take of some of the coaches whose backside is getting warmer.
Coaches With 5.0 Rating: (Win Now)
John L. Smith
John L. Smith – Arkansas: On the surface this appears to be a interim hire but as a BCS head coach told me a few months ago, “What if they (Arkansas) win 11 games and the SEC West?  You have to keep him.”  This was the year everything was lined up for Arkansas to win the SEC West especially with Alabama and LSU coming to Fayetteville.  Asking a new coach to do that his first year is unfair.
Derek Dooley
Derek Dooley – Tennessee: Dooley had the misfortune to follow Lane Kiffin who raped UT in only year in Knoxville.  It is a make or break year for Dooley but what win total will satisfy the powers that be and Vol fans?  Nine, 10.
One thing that might work against Dooley is that current Tennessee athletic director Dave Hart didn’t hire Dooley.  Hart came from Florida State and knows a thing or two about successful football programs.  If Hart see significant progress with the UT football program then Dooley may survive. A good start is important for Dooley’s fate.
Coaches With 4.5 Rating (Better Win Now):
DeWayne Walker – New Mexico State: Walker is 9-29 in three season coaching the Aggies.  It is extremely difficult to win at New Mexico State and Walker is finding that out.  Walker probably gets another year to turn the program around.
Dan Enos – Central Michigan: Before Enos took over the Chippawas had won three Mid-American Conferences titles in 4 years.  In two years as head coach Enos has lead Central Michigan to consectutive 3-9 seasons.  The natives in Mt. Pleasant are restless.  Enos needs to win at least six games to cool off his butt.
Coaches With 4.0 Rating:(It Would Help Your Fate To Win Now)
Frank Spaziani – Boston College:  This is our leading candidate as the head coach to be fired when the Eagles lose their seventh game in October or November.  The program is in a state of decline.  Coach Spaz is a hell of a defensive coach but on offense, The Eagles can’t get off the ground.  Spaziani will be a hot commodity as the defensive coordinator though so he would land on his feet.
Jeff Quinn – Buffalo: After Turner Gill put the paddles and revived the Bulls program it’s been downhill since Quinn took over.  In two years Quinn is 5-19.  Better win six games this year.
Robb Akey – Idaho: Akey has had a roller coaster ride as the Vandals head coach starting out with three wins his first two seasons followed by a rise to mediocrity.  Now the Vandals have declined after going 2-10 in Akey’s fifth year.  Better show progress this year.
Randy Edsall – Maryland: Randy Edsall won two games his first season at Maryland, ran off players who didn’t fit in his system including a quarterback that was ACC Rookie of the Year and his best offensive lineman plus according to OSG sources those who write the big checks to the program didn’t take to kindly to Edsall’s act.  Edsall isn’t going anywhere because this was a big hire for Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson and won’t pull the trigger.
Kevin Bailiff – Rice: It’s extremely hard to win at Rice.  Bailiff ‘s 23-38 record in his five years with the Owls should be enough to stay for a while.  That’s actually not a bad record for a Rice head coach.
Bobby Houck – UNLV: Houck’s contract runs through 2014 and though his record in two years is only 4-21 the Rebels were the lowest of the low when he took over.  Houck has time to turn it around and will stay put for a while.
That's our take.  We welcome yours.

DEVELOPING: 3 Razorbacks Busted For Burglary

((HT: TodaysTHV.com))

Arkansas wide receivers Marquel Wade and Maudrecus Humphrey, and tight end Andrew Peterson were arrested by University of Arkansas Police just after midnight in a burglary case.

Witnesses ID'ed the three as players for UA and some of the stolen items were recovered from a bookstore near campus. A police report said that a clerk at that particular store said that the three regularly sold used stuff.

Arkansas head coach John L. Smith released the following statement:

"Marquel Wade, Maudrecus Humphrey and Andrew Peterson have been suspended indefinitely. We have high stands for our student-athletes and I expect them to conduct themselves appropriately. Poor conduct and misbehavior will not be tolerated and is not what we expect from the University of Arkansas football program."

All three are supposed to appear in court on Monday to address the charges.

The HQ would like to commend the Razorbacks for suspending players indefinitely during a time of year when nothing is going on...

Well played, sir...

John L Smith... Commence Punch Lines Now...

It was the day that the new Arkansas head coach was supposed to win the press conference...

By all appearances, he didn't. John L. Smith was comedic, sad, and blamed his wife for returning to Fayetteville after all...

Here's some of the presser...
((HT: TodaysTHV.com Little Rock))

Now, it's all on AD Jeff Long...

If he just doesn't like all of his staff and just wants to jettison them all after this season, then John L. wasn't a bad idea.

If he wants to bring Petrino back after one season of John L.'s caretaking and keep the staff in tact in the process, then all the tears in the world that Long shed last week meant nothing- and was one of the best acting jobs in recent history...

Here's John L.'s agreement to be back...

Here's some more reaction from KFSM-TV and 5NewsOnline.com

What's your best John L. Smith joke so far...???

BREAKING: John L Smith To Arkansas... No, Really...

Everyone is kvetching about a possible 5PM EDT press conference in the land of the Razorback (or is it "land of the Razorbacks...?")

Sources close to OSG and the situation in Fayetteville and Little Rock are saying that Arkansas AD Jeff Long has made his choice to take over for Robert Petrino, Esq.

And it's John L Smith according to the Associated Press...???

AD Long is looking for a splash, and while bringing in currently-ostracized New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton isn't working out to his timetable, bringing in a guy like Smith to work on, what a lot of people thought would be a contender for the Ess-E-Cee Western Division title is interesting.

The HQ will be interested in seeing how he does in a pressure-cooker more high-powered than Louisville.

More when know more...

The HQ just remembers this from his tenure in Lansing in 2005
((HT: ABC Sports/youtube))

Petrino replaces John L at Luh-vul, so them's irony now...
So much for the "John L Era" at Weber State since he was the head coach there...

Wonder what the buyout in Ogden was...??? He was head coach at his ALMA MATER for three-and-a-half months, and according to Al.com's Kevin Scarbinsky, had only completed his staff three weeks ago.

While he has familiarity with working on the staff as the special teams coordinator, John L. also knows the deal is for 10 months...

Here's early discussion with Ryan, Hot Rod, and Joe Schad...
((HT: ESPN))

1700 UPDATE: Smith is signing a one-year, $850,000 deal. Prevailing thoughts are that Weber didn't have a proper buyout, Smith hadn't signed his deal, or John L had some kind of an out for certain schools where Weber is screwed...
