Cowgirls Win WNIT Over James Madison

((HT: Newsok.com))

With everything Oklahoma State's women's hoops program has been through this season, there were a lot of people ((HQ included)) that weren't necessarily rooting against James Madison in their game against OSU, but were rooting for the Cowgirls to win their last game of the year.

And in a game where OSU led by as many as 17, they got their title with the win over the Dukes. The widow of head coach Kurt Budke, Shelley, was given the honor of cutting down the last part of the net in their 75-68 win.

Gina Mizell's must-read piece gave some insights from coach Jim Littell about how players went back to ideas that gave the players comfort in a time of great mourning and the team felt the presence of coach Budke and coach Miranda Serna.

Congrats to every one in Stillwater...

“It's OK to smile. It's OK to laugh out there. It's OK to show positive emotion,” interim coach Jim Littell said this week. “That is not disrespectful.

Should Oke State Review Their Travel Policy...???

((HT: newsok.com/Ellis))

That's the question that Randy Ellis of NewsOk is raising since it's another plane crash involving Cowboys personnel in, just under, an 11-year period...

Here's the OSU presser after the deaths of Coaches Budke and Serna were announced to the team in Stillwater...

From Ellis:

The airplane that crashed Thursday killing four people near Perryville, Ark., was a single-engine Piper that would not meet the OSU team travel policy's minimum requirement for aircraft to be “powered by two or more turbine engines.”

Gary Shutt, OSU spokesman, said university officials assert the airplane wasn't required to meet that standard because it was a recruiting trip and no student athletes were on board.

“The team travel policy only applies to team travel,” Shutt said. “The coaches, if they're doing other types of travel, like recruiting, it does not fall under that policy.”

Weather has been ruled out in the crash that also took the lives of former Oklahoma state senator Olin Branstetter and his wife, Paula.

Kurt Budke
((ht: newsok.com))

**UPDATE** at bottom of this story.

A horrible story to report this morning. Oklahoma State women's basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna along with another passenger and a pilot were killed when their plane crashed in Perry County, Arkansas late Thursday night.

Newson6.com in Tulsa said they were flying in a Piper PA-28 Cherokee airplane.

According to Newsok.com, the coaches were on a recruiting trip.

Budke had been the head coach since 2005 and won 112 games while coaching in Stillwater. His teams made the NCAA tournament 3-times and also made 2 other post season appearance.

Budke leaves behind a wife and three kids, Serna, was a long-time assistant, she also coached in Stillwater the past seven years before coming over from Lousiana Tech with Budke.

Okie State President Burns Hargis released a statement saying: "The Oklahoma State family is devastated by this tragedy. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of Kurt Budke, Miranda Serna and the other victims."

As do ours.

**UPDATE**--

The plane belonged to former Oklahoma State Senator Olin Branstetter and his wife Paula. It was not the 1st air tragedy for the Oklahoma State Athletic department. In 2001, one of the 3 planes the men's basketball team was flying in to a game in Colorado crashed.
