((HT: Big Ten Network))
It was ugly...
Michigan State lost to Oregon as the Ducks scored the last 28 points in Eugene
Notre Dame shut out Michigan
Virginia Tech took care of Ohio State in front of the largest crowd in the history of the Horseshoe
But, it was silly elsewhere...
Rutgers beat Howard
Nebraska needed a late TD to beat McNeese
Penn State barely beat Akron
Minnesota beat Middle Tennessee
Maryland turned the ball over six times but a blocked punt gave them a win over South Florida
The bigger news came from two MAC teams that held on...
Central Michigan sprinted out to an early lead over Purdue in Lafayette and beat the Boilermakers- who are living up to the old nickname of "Pur-don't..."
((HT: CMU Sports))
The other not-so-shocking shocker was Northern Illinois taking care of Northwestern
Defense from guys like Paris Logan helps
So, in a day that could have solidified the Big Ten/12 as one of the power conferences this season, all Saturday did was confuse the issue and give one conference a big "I told you so..." for scheduling prowess. It proved that some teams are bad, some need work, and some just aren't there yet.

Kent State starting center Jason Bitsko was found dead Wednesday morning in his off-campus apartment.
A cause of death hasn't been determined.
Coaches and players became worried when the rising senior didn't show up for morning practice. Bitsko's roommate went and found him in the room and immediately called 911.
Joel Nielsen, the school's Athletic Director said "We are heartbroken by the news of Jason's death. Our thought's and prayers go out to his family, friends, teammates and everyone who's life he touched"
Coach Paul Haynes added "Our players, coaches and everyone involved with our team are hurting because he was family. As a team, we will come together and get through this one day at a time.
The 21-year old redshirt junior started all 12-games for the Golden Flashes in 2013 and was expected to be a starter this upcoming season.
After telling the team what happened, Haynes cancelled football activities for the day. Kent State opens their season 10 days from now at home vs. Ohio.

Eastern Michigan's English Speaks, Eagles Win In OT
((HT: EMU Athletics))
Former Eastern Michigan head coach Ron English came clean in an interview with the AP about his unceremonious dismissal earlier this week with three games left in the 2013 season...
"As a man who has coached 21 years, obviously, on this occasion and particular meeting, I lost my poise, got upset and used language that was inappropriate, particularly as it pertains to homosexual slurs. I regret that," English said. "I apologize to the university for putting it in this position and tarnishing its reputation. I look forward to continuing a career that has been marked by molding men of integrity, passion, and intensity for 21 years."
The Detroit News has a copy of the purported audio rant that got English fired:
The school released a statement as to why English was let go:
"I received a tape of a situation in which Coach English had addressed the team and used wholly inappropriate language. We hold our coaches and staff to high standards of professionalism and conduct and there is no place, particularly in a student environment, where this language is appropriate. The statements made by Coach English are absolutely unacceptable. My decision to make a change in leadership of our football program was the culmination of a lot of factors including the comprehensive review of our program, the competitive performance and this tape. Our primary interest is in the well being and success of our student-athletes and this will continue to be our priority in every decision we make and every action we take. My focus moving forward is on the quality of our student-athletes' experience as well as the search process for the next leader of our football program."
The first part of that was naming Stan Parrish as interim coach and the team responded- for the first time out, anyway...
Eastern played Western and 35-32...
Here's the highlights of the win on overtime...

Jordan Lynch Is Working The Outside Lane
((HT: XOS Digital))
Northern Illinois QB Jordan Lynch finished 7th in the voting last year for the posing-stiff arm trophy that the best player gets in Division I...
With all these efforts that he's trying to put on the board, it looks like NIU is trying to get him as much attention as possible when the voting actually happens...
Like today...
Lynch had four touchdown passes, one touchdown run and one touchdown catch as they beat Eastern Michigan 59-20...
Here's the highlights of the Huskies win...
NIU (8-0, 4-0 in Mid-American Conference) won its 24th consecutive home game and their 21st straight against a MAC opponent.
NIU's 8-0 start is the program's best since 1965...
The HQ thinks it's safe to say the other front runners for that trophy may do the same kinds of stunts as we go further in the year...

UMass Football: Fighting To Be Bad
((ht: deadspin.com))
Hmmmm....this may explain a few things.
A video, posted by the Daily Hampshire Gazette, has raised more than a few eyebrows in and around the University of Massachusetts campus.
The "Hype" video in question, show various shots of UMass football players wrestling, punching and appearing to square off and fight each other.
No, Brad Pitt nor Edward Norton were anywhere to be found.
The video, shot during the teams winter 2012 workouts, appears to have been produced by the schools video staff per instructions by coach Charley Molnar.
And according to the Gazette, a group of former players is very upset and petitioning to stop the "Improper Treatment of Current Players".

Of course, none of this justifies the Minutemen being one of the FBS level patsies for the past couple of seasons. They finished near the bottom of our "Bottom of the Barrel" poll last season.
And in 2013, the suckiness has continued as the team is 0-4 and averaging 7 points a game. And Molnar is still the coach.
And despite Molnar's defense of his method's in the article, perhaps, considering how bad they've been, things might need to change. Though we'd be surprised to see that actually happen.

ICYMI: Bowling Green SID is Sacked to Start 2013 Season (Video)
((ht: cbssports.com))
No really, Bowling Green SID Dave Meyer gave new meaning to the term "Taking One for the Team".
In a promotional video for the schools upcoming season, Meyer allowed himself (in full pads), to be sacked by defensive tackle Ted Oullet.
Props to Meyer for coming up with a way to get viral video like attention, we just hope it was worth it, because the shot looks kinda painful.
