RALEIGH--The Carolina Hurricanes announced that the team has agreed to terms with 18-year old defenseman Haydn Fleury on a three-year, entry-level contract.
According to a
team press release, the deal will pay Fleury $832,500 per season at the NHL level or $70,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level for each season. He will also receive a signing bonus of $277,500.

We feel very strongly that Haydn is an important part of our team’s future,” Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Hurricanes, said in the same release. “
He performed very well at our development camp and we are looking forward to seeing him in Traverse City and during training camp in Raleigh.”
Fleury, a Regina, Sask. native, is coming off a decent second second full season with the
Red Deer Rebels in the
Western Hockey League . In 70 regular season games with Red Deer, he recorded 46 points (8 goals, 38 assists). He had a +15 +/- rating in the face of Red Deer's -10 season goal differential. He was 17th in points for WHL blueliners. Fleury also played on Team Canada's national team in the Sochi Olympics, winning a gold medal.
When Fleury was drafted by Carolina, Francis said then he would more than likely return to Red Deer to continue his development. Some 'Canes scouts believe, however, that Fleury will compete for a spot on the big club this season.
