Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, tonight announced that center Jordan Staal suffered a broken bone in the lower portion of his right leg during the team’s preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Staal, 26, was injured during the third period when he got tangled up with Sabres defenseman Josh Gorges in the third period of Carolina’s 2-0 exhibition loss. Staal will return to Raleigh with the team on Wednesday and will be evaluated by team doctors on Thursday.

A timetable for his recovery has yet to be determined.

NHL, Carolina Hurricanes agree to terms with Haydn Fleury

RALEIGH--The Carolina Hurricanes announced that the team has agreed to terms with 18-year old defenseman Haydn Fleury on a three-year, entry-level contract.

According to a team press release, the deal will pay Fleury $832,500 per season at the NHL level or $70,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level for each season. He will also receive a signing bonus of $277,500.

We feel very strongly that Haydn is an important part of our team’s future,” Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Hurricanes, said in the same release. “He performed very well at our development camp and we are looking forward to seeing him in Traverse City and during training camp in Raleigh.

Fleury, a Regina, Sask. native, is coming off a decent second second full season with the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League . In 70 regular season games with Red Deer, he recorded 46 points (8 goals, 38 assists). He had a +15 +/- rating in the face of Red Deer's -10 season goal differential. He was 17th in points for WHL blueliners. Fleury also played on Team Canada's national team in the Sochi Olympics, winning a gold medal.

When Fleury was drafted by Carolina, Francis said then he would more than likely return to Red Deer to continue his development. Some 'Canes scouts believe, however, that Fleury will compete for a spot on the big club this season.

Happened last night for the Carolina Hurricanes in their 4-1 win over Dallas...

Eric Staal got credit for it... and it made the west wild card interesting...

Phoenix and Dallas are now tied with 85 points with five games left in the regular season...
Carolina is six points out with five games left...

Marty Brodeur Scores In Return To Ice

((HT: NHL/MSG))

Moose Hedberg got his time between the pipes while Martin Brodeur was out with a back injury that kept him out a month...

So, what do you do to welcome yourself back...???

Score a goal...

Technically, he was credited with a goal since he was the last Devil to touch the puck in an own goal situation.
But, hey, a goal is a goal... and a power play goal is a power play goal...

The first since 2002... and his third in his career...

Here's the breakdown...

Canes look to take home opener against the Bolts

RALEIGH – The Carolina Hurricanes are looking to erase an “Opening Day” loss to Florida in their home opener.

The Canes take on the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena Tuesday night. Puck drops at 7:00pm. This will be the first of five meetings between the Southeast Division rivals in the 48-game, 2012-13 regular season.

In the first game back from a tremendously long 113-day lockout, it’s hard to believe that any team would automatically be in Stanley Cup-contender form. Most of the Canes roster stayed active during the lockout, but playing against your teammates and playing against the defending Southern Division champions are two different things.

First game, it’s tough to get real crisp right off the bat,” Eric Staal told the (Raleigh) News & Observer after the Panthers’ game.

Canes goalie Cam Ward gave up four goals on the first eleven shots, and backup goalie Dan Ellis made his Carolina debut (came from Anaheim) just after the first intermission. Many fans wondered if Ellis would start against the Bolts.

Cam’s in, he’s in tomorrow. He’s the starter. After watching the games over the weekend, there’s gotta be a good six or seven goalies that have been pulled already – good goalies, All-Star goalies. It’s the toughest from what it appears so far on the goaltenders more than anybody,” said Canes’ head coach KirkMuller after Monday’s practice. “I think what’s important is he bounces back mentally, rolls up his sleeves, gets ready, and works through this like the other goalies. I said forget about it, it’s done, and just focus on the opener.

Two questions - can Eric Staal finally get on track for the Canes, and can Carolina's defense stop Steven Stamkos?

One cool thing that the Storm Squad and Stormy are doing on Opening Night though, every fan in attendance will receive a Carolina Hurricanes 2’x3’ house flag, presented by PNC.

There's a storm coming...hopefully...

Developing: Paul Maurice: You're fired

Paul Maurice
((ht: newsobserver.com))

Geez, it hasn't been a great Thanksgiving weekend to coaches in all fields this year. We just reported on the Washington Captials firing their head coach Bruce Bodreau, saying it was the first NHL firing of the year.

Just a couple of hours later comes word that the Carolina Panthers fired their coach, Paul Maurice. The team is expected to name Kirk Mueller, coach of the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals to replace him.

Maurice was in his second stint with the Hurricanes and was 8-13-4 this season including losing 11 of their past 15 games.

Maurice had been the head coach for the 'Canes since 2008-09 and haven't made the playoffs since that initial season.
