Kolstad In Coma, Nelson And Shelley Out On Bond

The news on Isaac Kolstad isn't good from his family and, sadly, it might be worse for Philip Nelson and Trevor Shelley before it's done.

Kolstad's family has confirmed that he is in a medically-induced coma and has had part of his brain removed because it ceased to function. He also has had a tracheotomy to help with breathing.

Part of the statement from the family had these paragraphs about Kolstad's condition:

Due to the injuries Isaac sustained early last Sunday morning, his brain had severe bruising and swelling, increasing the pressure within his skull to life-threatening levels. In order to relieve the swelling, he required emergency surgery on his brain early Tuesday morning. Isaac had a significant amount of his brain tissue that was no longer viable removed during that procedure.

Even though the surgery was successful, the swelling in Isaac's brain remains significant; leaving him at high risk for further injury and potentially additional surgical procedures. Isaac's lungs also sustained severe injury, resulting in the inability to breathe on his own. He also sustained a lack of oxygen to his brain.

Mankato Update: Philip Nelson Posts Bond, Police Looking For Additional Suspect

The larger news involving the assault of former Minnesota-Mankato LB Isaac Kolstad is that former Minnesota-now Rutgers QB Philip Nelson has made bond and can return to Rutgers University if the school wants him.

Navy's McKamey Passes Overnight

Navy freshman football player Zack McKamey collapsed Saturday morning during a football practice at Annapolis. The reason for this collapse is unknown at present, but sadly McKamey died Tuesday night after slipping into a coma. He never regained consciousness after surgery to relieve swelling and bleeding in his brain.

The former Mister Football in the state of Tennessee was 19.

“We are all so very heartbroken by the death of Midshipman Will McKamey,” said Naval Academy Superintendent Mike Miller in a release. “This is devastating news for his family, his classmates, his teammates and the entire Naval Academy family. We offer our deepest condolences to Will's family, friends and shipmates in the wake of this tragedy.”

“During this most difficult of times, first and foremost, our prayers and thoughts turn to Randy, Kara and their beautiful family,” said Ken Niumatalolo, Navy head football coach, said in the same release. “Our deepest and most sincere condolences go out to their entire family and friends. As our Navy football family mourns the loss of one of our brothers, we also celebrate and honor his life. He loved his family, his friends and his teammates. The Brotherhood loves you! Keep the ball ‘high and tight’ in Heaven.”

McKamey suffered head trauma after a game against South Pittsburg in the 2012 season, but after MRI and CAT scans he was cleared for release and did not play any kind of contact sport for nine months...

McKamey, was a member of the Third Company at the Naval Academy, and was a 2013 graduate of Grace Christian Academy where he was a two-time All-State selection. Grief counselors have been made available on campus at Annapolis.

Schumacher Still Critical After Skiing Accident

Grand Prix driver Michael Schumacher is still listed in critical condition after the accident that occurred on a skiing vacation with his son. Schumi fell and suffered an impact to the right-hand side of his head after he and his group decided to tackle an unmarked run.

Schumacher was wearing a helmet and was conscious immediately after the accident, but his condition deteriorated- arriving at the hospital in a coma.

He then underwent surgery and the surgeons said that they discovered blood clots on his brain. They were removed but lesions were also discovered.

Doctors on sight maintain that the next few days are crucial in determining the extent of the damage since it usually takes a few days for the swelling in the brain to top off and recede. He is being kept in a drug-induced coma to properly watch over him...
