What Do The UFL and The NHL Have In Common...???

((HT: Hampton Roads Daily Press))

Your answer: Neither of them are playing at present... and the NHL has a better chance of coming back than the UFL does...

It seems, through agent David Canter's Twitter feed, he is telling us that the league has cancelled the rest of its 2012 season. So, the answer to your trivia question is: The Virginia Destroyers-Sacramento Mountain Lions game last night is the last game in league history. The Mountain Lions won 20-17 as FOSG Chris Greisen couldn't lead the home team down the field for a game-tying field goal attempt as time expired...

In front of, what looked like, a crowd of tens in the hampton Roads...

Here's a Tyrell Sutton TD from last night...

Canter's Tweet:

UFL has notified all players and coaches their season is over and remaining games are canceled

A few of the Destroyers told WTKR-TV's Reed Andrews that they refused to play in the game against Sacramento because they hadn't been paid...

The HQ would like to know now where we can buy discounted team gear from the newest league to go under...

Schottenheimer Sues UFL, Destroyers Players Not Getting Paid Either...

((HT: Florio/PFT))

The HQ often wonders why the United Football League is still around...

While we get the idea of having another league around as a developmental league to indoor and outdoor leagues in this (or any other) hemisphere, this model just doesn't seem to work for league founder Bill Hambrecht.

Now, former Virginia Destroyers ((logo pictured right, thanks WAVY-TV)) head coach Marty Schottenheimer is suing for his salary from last year- something former Sacramento Mountain Lions head coach Dennis Green did at one point as well.

And did we mention that the Destroyers have Marty's brother, Kurt, as their current head coach...??? Wonder what family discussions are like...???

From Florio and CourthouseNewsService.com:

“After a period of negotiation, Schottenheimer expressed a willingness to serve as the head coach and general manager of the team,” the complaint states. “However, because the financial stability and long-term survival of the UFL were unclear, Schottenheimer wanted assurances that the payments owed to him by Team Virginia under his employment contract would be personally guaranteed by Hambrecht. Hambrecht agreed to personally guarantee Team Virginia’s payments to Schottenheimer during the first year of his employment.”

The HQ's only question is: "Where's the proof...???"

That's all we want...

More from the complaint from WTKR-TV...

"Schottenheimer’s Virginia team won the UFL championship in 2011, so Schottenheimer says he was owed $1.1 million plus $150,000 in bonuses as of Sept. 12. Schottenheimer also claims he incurred $100,000 in expenses during his first year at Virginia.

Schottenheimer says the team and Hambrecht refuse to pay.

“Team Virginia acknowledged that Schottenheimer was due the sums demanded for unpaid salary, bonuses and expense reimbursement, but Team Virginia informed Schottenheimer that it was financially unable to perform its obligations under the Employment Agreement,” the complaint states. “Indeed, as of August 2012, the UFL informed Schottenheimer that it was unclear whether the UFL would continue to exist as an operating football league, due [to] its distressed financial situation. In August 2012, Schottenheimer again demanded that Team Virginia pay his unpaid salary, bonus compensation and expense reimbursement. Team Virginia failed to pay Schottenheimer any of the sums due following this additional demand.”

Apparently, the players for the squad aren't getting paid either these days...

Destroyers players may be suiting up under the auspice that they haven't been paid any of their wages for the season. Players talked to WTKR-TV, but had to have their voices and appearances altered so they wouldn't get cut...

Reed Andrews did some digging...

So, the Destroyers-Sacramento game tonight should be interesting...

Brian Banks Gets His Shot

((HT: KABC-TV))

The HQ has chronicled the struggle Brian Banks has had to proclaim his innocence while spending five years behind bars. He was accused of rape and spent five years in prison before a judge overturned the sentence in May after the victim recanted her story.

Turns out all the alleged victim wanted was money to solidify her story...

Now, Jim Fassel and the Las Vegas Locos are giving Banks his chance after he spent the summer getting tryouts with the Seattle Seahawks and two other NFL teams...

Amy Powell has the sound from Vegas...

Very cool... and the HQ hopes it's only the beginning for the Long Beach Poly grad...

The UFL LIves!

((ht: profootballtalk.com))

And you are probably asking yourself..."What the heck is the UFL?"

Well, maybe not if you are a regular reader of OSG Sports because we've reported on them before, but the casual football fan, no, they probably aren't aware.

The UFL has hemmoraged millions, gone from 8 teams to 4 and yet still has Marty Schottenheimer and Jim Fassel's names attached to it.

And the reason they are in the news: They got a TV Deal!

According to ProFootballTalk.com through the AP, The CBS Sports Network has agreed to air 2 games a week for 8 weeks.

It's pretty funny that a 4-team league will exist in it's 4th season. Mostly because nobody is aware they existed in the 1st place.

The premise was actually pretty good, but instead of trying to become the AAA Affiliate of the NFL, they tried to compete with the NFL.

Maybe by letting players come and go as they need, they'll be successful. But with only 4 teams and a piss poor track record--We Doubt It.

UFL Pushes Opening Back A Month

The United Football League may be on its last legs once and for all...

The league, through Commissioner Mike Huyghue, has announced that it will move the start of its season from mid-August to mid-September. The push back will give the league time to finalize television agreements and "other critical business affairs."

Players who reported to training camps this week are returning home at league expense and camps will now open in mid-August.

UFL owner and founder Bill Hambrecht said he and other investors are committed to funding the 2011 season, but Huyghue has said each team had about $1 million in unpaid bills at the end of the 2010 season.

Here's what we're missing in the interim...
Here's last year's title game from Old Rosenblatt Stadium between Florida and Las Vegas where the Locos won the title for the second year in a row...
