OSG High: Another School FB Season Canceled From Hazing

((HT: MyFoxPhilly))

The HQ told you last week about the Sayreville (NJ) program that had its season yanked out from under itself because of a massive hazing situation by senior leaders upon freshman players.

Now, a program in suburban Philadelphia is following suit.

Central Bucks (PA) West High is marching through those same steps on the eve of Homecoming. Their varsity and junior varsity team's schedules, as well as the coaching staffs associated, have been suspended

Superintendent David Weitzel released a statement on the Central Bucks School District website:

“Based on all available, verified information gathered from an ongoing internal investigation into allegations of improper conduct by numerous Central Bucks West football team members, and the failure of the coaching staff to properly supervise activities, swift and firm action is absolutely necessary.”

Hawks Cancel Meeting With Civil Rights Leaders

((HT: MyFoxAtlanta))

A scheduled meeting between Hawks CEO Steve Koonin and local civil rights leaders was cancelled last night by the team. THe action led the group to come down to the Hawks home, Philips Arena, and tell anyone with a camera that he and his group were less than happy.

The Rev. Markel Hutchins got a phone call from Hawks Media Relations Director Garin Narain asking that it be postponed, but Hutchins wanted to hear that from Koonin instead of the front office.

Hutchins and his group are calling for Hawks President/GM Danny Ferry to be fired for his remarks that he relayed from a scouting report about Luol Deng as the team was chasing free agents over the summer. They also want minority ownership in the team once the team is officially put up for sale.

Here's the lead story at noon today in the HQ
Atlanta News, Weather, Traffic, and Sports | FOX 5

Koonin maintains that Ferry has been disciplined, but he won't be fired.

All that may change when the team gets a new owner who wants to put his own stamp on the franchise, anyway.

New Mexico Cancels Women's Soccer Opener Over Hazing Investigation

((HT: KOB-TV))

This weekend was supposed to be the opening of the New Mexico Lobos women's soccer season- a home game against Texas Tech.

That got wiped off the board as the school is in the middle of an investigation of an alleged hazing incident from the weekend.

Here's the latest out of Albuquerque

The hazing investigation stems from allegations that the freshmen who have left the team are now making against the women's soccer program. A parent of one of the players who left and a lawyer now associated with the case have been retained by one of the players- both confirmed the allegations made in the case.

“We are continuing to interview student-athletes and investigate what happened on Sunday night,” UNM Vice President of Athletics Paul Krebs said when asked about the investigation. “I’ve consulted with Texas Tech, and in light of our continuing investigation, we have decided to cancel the game.”

The game won't count in the standings (as a win or a loss) since the 2014 NCAA Soccer Rulebook's Rule 7.4 states, "When a scheduled game is terminated before it begins, it is recorded as 'no contest.' Neither team is credited with a win or loss, regardless of the reason the game was terminated."

UNM women's soccer practice was canceled Tuesday and the first home game (now) is listed as being September 12th.

US Patent Office Cancels Washington Redskins Patents

((HT: WJLA-TV))

How's that one for you...???

On the grounds that the Washington Redskins nickname is of a "disparaging manner," the United States Patent Office has decided to pull the team's patent because of the apparent "offensive nature to Native Americans."

Team owner Daniel Snyder has given the NFL office and Commissioner Roger Goodell the "over my dead body" response in changing the team's nickname (though, he doesn't understand that he could have two separate revenue streams if he played his cards right). And, now, the NFL has gone ahead and taken this ingeniously active maneuver.

Here's the early returns
The team can, obviously, appeal- which they may already be doing after the 2-1 decision. And, here's the decision in full for your reading pleasure...

Augusta Day One: The Weather Won

((HT: WJBF-TV))

It was a rainy, nasty day on the course where the best in the world are set to play this week (and in the entire southeast for that matter are living their lives)- so, in reality, not a whole lot got done...

Evidenced by everyone that is heading to the airport after seeing less than a half-day of practice rounds on the course on Washington Road...

Here's your proof that the weather won...

OSG High: Mass. Game Canceled Because of Racist Graffiti

((HT: MyFoxBoston))

The HQ really doesn't have any words to go along with this- except for classless... and that's just a start...

An eighth-grader at Lunenburg (MA) High School in Massachusetts had racist graffiti spray-painted on his house the day of a game against Oakmont Regional (MA) High School.

"Knights don't need no n******," was the phrase on Isaac Phillips' home... and the HQ is fairly certain you can figure out the word isn't "nonsense..."

Phillips is one-quarter black. His father, Anthony Phillips, is half black, and his mother, Andrea Brazier, is white.

Brazier reported the graffiti to police, who notified Lunenburg High.
Superintendent Loxi Jo Calmes went ahead and postponed their game.

Brett Crawford of the Fitchburg (MA) Sentinel and Enterprise caught up with Phillips and his mom:

A team meeting was called for later on Friday to find out if anyone was going to come forward with any information- and, high schoolers being high schoolers, no one did. According to Brazier, her son has been victim of other pranks including having his cleats watered down and put in the trash and having a tire slashed on his bike.

Phillips also says he now wants to transfer schools...

Understandable...

CIAA Title Game Canceled After Luncheon Fight

((HT: MyFox8/Winston Salem))

The CIAA football title game between Winston-Salem State and Virginia State was supposed to take place tomorrow afternoon. But it won't now because it was canceled after the Winston-Salem State QB was assaulted in a bathroom during the media luncheon...

Virginia State's Lamont Britt now faces charges of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury...

The Winston-Salem Journal, citing multiple anonymous sources, reported that five Virginia State players were involved in the assault of Rudy Johnson.

"We understand that some Virginia State University and Winston-Salem State University student-athletes were involved in an incident during the time of today's luncheon event," CIAA commissioner Jacqie Carpenter said in a statement. "The police are currently investigating the incident and are speaking with the individuals involved. Leadership from the CIAA and the participating institutions are fully cooperating. Further details and updates regarding the status of the championship game will be forthcoming."
The Journal was told by other WSSU players that Johnson would not have been able to play in the title game tomorrow because of his injuries that, according to the police report, were a swollen eye and a cut above it...

OSG High: Glades, Miami Game Canceled Due To Gang Violence

((HT: WPTV-TV))

The Glades Central- Miami Northwestern game was taken off the books last night because of the report of gang violence in the area...

A Thursday shooting in Belle Glade led the police to send the heads-up and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and School District Police decided it was best to cancel the game.

Northwestern Athletic Business Director Tiffany Wright she said the school received a call at 11AM breaking the news...

A Palm Beach County School District official told espnwestpalm.com that the game will not be played on Saturday and that Monday is "unlikely." There's only two weeks left in the regular season...

Here's the wrap...
Northwestern would go to 4-4 and Glades to 3-5 if there's no make-up because it would have to be considered a Glades forfeit.

Two teens were arrested and local police are searching for a third that they think is also involved in the shooting that was referred to by local police as "an ongoing feud."

Slip Sliding Away: Bucks-Raptors Cancelled Due To Unsafe Court

((HT: NBA))

The new floor for the Milwaukee Bucks might have too much wax on it or something...

The Bucks-Raptors game was cancelled after a bunch of players hit the floor in a negative, non-fouling manner...

Here's the look at the slipperiness...

Head ref Danny Crawford said he and the other officials determined the floor was unplayable.

“We kept making eye contact out there and we saw the players were having issues with traction,” Crawford said, in an interview with a pool reporter. “Then when we had a few guys go down, we figured we should have a conference. And both teams wanted not to continue the game.”

Government Shutdown Effects Service Academy Football (As Of Right Now UPDATED)

Air Force Associate AD Troy Garnhart says it's possible Saturday's football game vs. Navy might not take place due to the government shutdown.

In addition, head coach Troy Calhoun's weekly press conference with selected players has been wiped away from today's rundown of events...

The game itself is sold out and is set for broadcast on CBS Sports Network...

Here was the message the Commander in Chief released early this morning related to the armed services and their duties as the government is shut down for the first time in 17 years...
((HT: White House Video))

The Army-Boston College game could also be in the swing...

AD Garnhart told the Capitol Gazette:

Garnhart explained that upper-class cadets at the Air Force Academy are considered military personnel, which means they could be subject to travel restrictions under the shutdown.

The final decision to decide whether or not the Air Force-Navy game will be wiped out will come no later than noon Thursday...

More as civilization as we know it grinds to a halt...

PM UPDATE: The Department of Defense released a statement about all of this at the Air Force...

At this time, travel for all intercollegiate athletics is cancelled – this includes the Air Force-Navy game on Saturday, 5 Oct.

The Air Force Academy Falcons will attempt to play all home intercollegiate athletic contests but those may be cancelled, as well. Academy officials are working with Mountain West Conference officials, those teams the Falcons were scheduled to play and officials at The Department of the Air Force to make up as many games as possible.

And from the Navy:

As a result of the government shutdown, the Department of Defense has suspended all intercollegiate athletic competitions at the Service Academies.

The Naval Academy will cancel contests as appropriate and notification on Saturday's football game against Air Force will be made public prior to 12 noon on Thursday.

Tonight's soccer game against Howard has been cancelled. It is not known at this time if the game will be made up or not.

Miles-Concordia Game Canceled Due To Bus Fire

((HT: Adam Holbein))

The Miles College football game scheduled for today was canceled after the Concordia College team bus caught on fire.

The team was travelling from Selma to the Miles campus in Fairfield when it caught fire.
No football players were injured but the team lost most of their equipment.

Adam Holbein posted this drive-by video which looks pretty bad...

"We did get confirmation that everybody got off the bus safely but they did sustain a lot of damage and lost all the equipment, that's what I've been told," Miles head coach Reginald Ruffin said. "We're just thankful and praise God that no one was hurt and our hearts go out to Concordia head coach (Don) Lee and his team and his coaching staff. We really sympathize for their loss."

Here's a picture of the hollowed out bus, thanks to Scott McClellan and his Twitter

According to the Selma Times-Journal newspaper, it appears a blown tire caused the fire in the rear of the bus:

Patrick Essex of the East Perry Volunteer Fire Department said the fire started on the rear drivers-side.
“It was still flamed up when we got there, but they got the kids out and across the road,” Essex said. “[The bus] is completely destroyed.”

Remember That Whole Marathon Thing...???

On second thought...

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg has decided against his initial idea that running the MYC Marathon was a good idea...

Now, running the marathon is a bad idea and he won't have it happen after all...

And he's leaving US$340-million on the table...

The HQ has gone round and round on the idea...

On one hand, there's the thought that running the race shows that the city is on its way back. There's also the thought that the city could use the infusion of capital is so desperately needs...

On the other hand, there's the thought that the region is too busy in trying to function on a daily basis to be concerned with people from foreign countries running around New York City in short-shorts not giving a tinker's damn about people who don't have any power, gas for their cars, or even a home to go home to...

Take your pick... but the HQ is leaning more toward the latter...
We have friends and family up there and we'll defer to what they say...

What Do The UFL and The NHL Have In Common...???

((HT: Hampton Roads Daily Press))

Your answer: Neither of them are playing at present... and the NHL has a better chance of coming back than the UFL does...

It seems, through agent David Canter's Twitter feed, he is telling us that the league has cancelled the rest of its 2012 season. So, the answer to your trivia question is: The Virginia Destroyers-Sacramento Mountain Lions game last night is the last game in league history. The Mountain Lions won 20-17 as FOSG Chris Greisen couldn't lead the home team down the field for a game-tying field goal attempt as time expired...

In front of, what looked like, a crowd of tens in the hampton Roads...

Here's a Tyrell Sutton TD from last night...
((HT: CBSSportsNetwork/UFL))

Canter's Tweet:

UFL has notified all players and coaches their season is over and remaining games are canceled

A few of the Destroyers told WTKR-TV's Reed Andrews that they refused to play in the game against Sacramento because they hadn't been paid...

The HQ would like to know now where we can buy discounted team gear from the newest league to go under...
