This one may not be as emphatic as Arkansas' Michael Qualls over Kentucky Tuesday night but it's just as effective.
With the game tied at 74 Charlotte's Terrence Williams had the ball in his hands with two seconds to go and went hard to the basket. Williams just beat the clock with his shot from point blank to win it for the 49ers 76-74.
Here's the highlights. Williams' game winner occurs at 1:53
Thanks Charlotte 49ers Athletics
"Our final play was not anything scientific on the coach’s part." Charlotte head coach Alan Major said. "It’s not anything crazy, X's and O's, or tricky type deal, that was your best ball handler making the best decision late in the game."
Williams led the 49ers with 16 points, Willie Clayton had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Charlotte.

Conference USA rebuilds by adding small schools
((ht: cbssports.com/mcmurphy))Well, we guess this means the Conference USA/Mountain West Super Conference merger is dead on arrival.
That's because C-USA announced that they are adding teams. Six of them to be exact. Though we might add most are not exactly household names.
The list includes: Florida International, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, Texas-San Antonio, Charlotte and Old Dominion.
For those keeping track, that would be a raid of the Sun Belt, the Patriot League and the WAC.
Read more details from Brett McMurphy of CBSSports.com, McMurphy broke the story RIGHT HERE
Interesting stuff, but hardly earth shaking news. Kudos to C-USA for trying to rebuild after being nearly decimated by the Big East. However, other than adding to their travel costs, this doesn't do much to add to the league's prestige.
In fact, it does very little for football...right now. Charlotte is about to enter FCS (1-AA) next year as a rookie program. The others have a footprint, but not a particularly large one. But it does protect the conference if for no other reason than the sheer size. Come 2013, C-USA will have 14-teams.
Here's the report from WAVY-TV in Norfolk about the idea...

McCarney Back At Work
((HT: WFAA-TV Dallas))
University of North Texas football coach Dan McCarney suffered a stroke on February 12, and these days, his life is almost back to normal. McCarney took the job with the Mean Green to resurrect the program that had hit rock bottom more years than not and was in trouble under Todd Dodge- a heralded Texas high school coach who stepped up in class...

Report: North Texas football coach hospitalized
![]() |

We are a little leery of this story because of the Twitter report, and quite honestly, we hope we are wrong.
According to a tweet by Iowa State women's hoop coach Bill Fennelly, his friend, former Iowa State and current North Texas Football Coach Dan McCarney has suffered a stroke.
Here's what Fennelly's Twitter said: "Please keep Dan McCarney in your thoughts and prayers after a recent stroke-no better people than he and his wife Margy"
The Des Moines Register reported on Fennelly's Tweet. You can read that RIGHT HERE
The Denton, TX Record-Chronicle did report McCarney went to the hospital yesterday (Sunday) and was able to confirm it was for a series of tests. They went on to say the school would release a statement Monday afternoon.
Read that story RIGHT HERE
The University just released a statement as we write this story. Athletic Director Rick Villarreal saying the following:
"Yesterday afternoon after returning from Miami, I spoke with Margy McCarney who said that her husband, Dan, had experienced some medical difficulties significant enough that he was taken to the hospital."
"The details that we know at this time are that he was admitted and is undergoing a batter of tests and will continue to be under observation. The exact cause and nature of the symptoms of his illness are not immediately known by us at this time. The family has asked until a complete diagnosis and a course of treatment is established that their privacy be respected. We can't comment any further at this time and will release information as it becomes available and approved by the family."
Though nobody references the word stroke in this statement, there is a significant health issue here it appears. We wish McCarney well and hope he is not incapacitated in anyway from the "Illness and Treatment".
Mr. Fennelly may be 100% correct here, but officially he isn't...which is why we are going to classify this as McCarney being hospitalized only.
