Whoa! Boxer Gets Mad and Pummels Referee

This isn't exactly something you see everyday. Though it is Croatian Youth Boxing.
Check out what happened at the end of this boxing match at the European Youth Boxing Championship in Zagreb.
Vido Loncar and Algirdas Baniulis were going at it and Baniulis got the win. After the ref declares the winner, Loncar, who was in his corner walks over to the ref and drops him with a punch and then gets on top of him wildly swinging away.
Thankfully the ref was helped to his feet and appears to be alright. As for Loncar, we are guessing his days as a boxer may be numbered.

"Money" Floyd Mayweather Barely Wins by Spare Change
If you stayed up late and paid the hefty PPV price to watch Floyd "Money" Mayweather fight Marcos Rene Maidana, you probably got good "Punch" per dollar value.
That's because the fight went the distance, with Mayweather getting the majority decision win.
Mayweather, called by many, one of boxings all-time greats, continued his undefeated string as a pro, his last loss coming in the '96 Olympics.
The scores, 117-111, 116-112 and one judge scoring it 114-114, meaning Mayweather got the decision. But those scores should tell you a lot. This was close.
Mayweather pocketed $32 million for the fight and unifies the the WBC and WBA Welterweight titles.

Rubin "Hurricane" Carter Passes At 76

A dominating middleweight in the 1960's, Rubin "Hurricane" Carter spent 19 years in prison for three murders in a tavern in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1966. Carter and friend John Artis were convicted in 1967 and again in a new trial in 1976.
Carter was freed in November of 1985 when his convictions were set aside after years of appeals. It was ultimately decided that racism, more than common sense and using legal judgment, were the determining factor in the convictions. His plight was immortalized in song by Bob Dylan and in the movies after his release- where Denzel Washington was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in "Hurricane."
Carter went 27-12-1 with 19 knockouts in his career, His two most memorable bouts were a first-round win over Emile Griffith in 1963 and losing a title fight in 1964 to Joey Giardello.

Boxing Great Ken Norton Passes Away

Former Boxing Champ Ken Norton Sr. has passed away at an Arizona hospital early Wednesday.
For those unfamiliar, Norton beat Muhammed Ali in a famous 1973 fight, breaking his jaw and handing Ali only his second professional defeat. In late 1977, he briefly held the World Boxing Council Heavyweight title before losing to Leon Spinks in early 1978.
The 70-year old Norton had been in declining health, and according to the Los Angeles Times, had been at an Arizona rehabilitation facility. He was recovering from a stroke and a battle with congestive heart failure.
For the young'uns in the audience, you may have recognized Norton the actor, who appeared in several movie and tv shows and was the father of former UCLA and Dallas Cowboy linebacker Ken Norton Jr.

Tommy Morrison Dies At 44
It all started off kinda like this...
And, then, Tommy Morrison parlayed the movie role into being a heavyweight contender and even holding the WBO title...
But Morrison tested positive for HIV in 1996 before a fight with Arthur Weathers. From that moment forward, he denied having HIV and also challenged the existence of the virus claiming everything from government conspiracy to misdiagnosis.
His wife, Trisha, insisted that Morrison had Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and not HIV.
Morrison died at the age of 44 after fighting the disease for 17 years...

Ray Edwards: From NFL to Air Boxer

Oh how the mighty have fallen.
Former NFL Defensive End Ray Edwards was let go mid-season in 2012 by the Atlanta Falcons for basically getting paid to underperform.
That talent seems to have taken hold in his other pastime: Boxing.
Check out the video below of Edwards from this past weekend. He appears to tower over a guy who looks from a distance like George Costanza from the Seinfeld TV show.
The two kind of circle each other before Costanza tries vainly to swing at the large man. He misses. Edwards circles and tries to throw an uppercut.
That uppercut looks straight out of a bad movie, missing the Costanza look-alike.
The problem: The tomato can still goes down.
Edwards is still and probably will be paid by the Falcons for a couple more years, whether he plays or not. And no, we don't know if he's looking to return to the NFL or not.
One thing readily apparent by this video: Don't try to make a living boxing, the career may be shorter than the one Edwards had in the NFL.
Though we suppose, there's always the WWE.

Ricky Hatton Retires After Senchenko Bout

It took Ricky Hatton three-and-a-half years to figure out whether or not he still had it to get into the ring...
After tonight's bout with Vyacheslav Senchenko, he's done once and for all to spend time with his family and his outside-the-ring projects...
It was a short shot to the ribs at the end of the 9th of a 10-round bout that caught Hatton and resulted in a count out...
Here's the 9th round as it went down...
And your postgame with Hatton, who obviously, was very emotional...
"I needed one more fight to see if I had still got it - and I haven't," Hatton said in the post-bout presser.
"I found out tonight it isn't there no more. I'm a straight-shooter and I tell the truth. I can look at myself in the mirror and tell myself I did my best, but there is always an excuse to find."
Hatton ends his career as a two-weight class champ and he'll always be a pride of Manchester...

Hector "Macho" Camacho died at the age of 50 after it was decided by his family to take him off life support. Camacho had also apparently suffered a second heart attack that he was not able to recover from while he was on machines...
Because his family waited too long, in the eyes of doctors, on their decision of donating his organs that is now an impossibility and the body is now headed to pathology for diagnosis.
Here's the update on the idea that there is video of the alleged shooter, but police are no closer in getting the suspect...

"Macho" Camacho Shot, In Critical Condition... (UPDATED w/Camacho On Life Support)

The former 3-class titleholder in boxing was apparently shot in the face while in a car outside a bar in the Puerto Rico city of Bayamon.
A second man also was shot and killed, but local police don't know if there was any relationship between Camacho and the second gentleman.
Police have no idea on a motive for the shooting at present, but claim to have a suspect in custody...
Depending on which media outlet you get your information from at present, Camacho is being treated for a gunshot wound to the face that may or may not have penetrated two of his cervical vertebrae...
Here's the update with the lead physician at the Centro Medico hospital in San Juan...
And, yes, it's in Spanish, but you get the drift by just tuning in...

Wife Kills Former Pro Boxer In Self-Defense

The wife of former boxer Ernest Mateen (now know as Ernest Mahir Abdul-Mateen) is not expected to be charged in his death according to local police...
Kia Jeffries acted in self-defense in the shooting of Mateen at an extended stay motel almost a week ago, according to a police investigation. Police were called to the hotel, found Jeffries injured, and also found Mateen shot and bleeding in a hallway.
Jeffries admitted to police that she had shot Mateen. Both were transported to hospital where he died from his injuries.
From Alexis Stevens article:
“They determined that Abdul-Mateen used a handgun to hit Jeffries repeatedly, until he was exhausted,” Gwinnett Police Department Corporal Jake Smith said. “At that point, Jeffries managed to turn the gun on Abdul-Mateen and pull the trigger.”
Also from Stevens, at the time of the shooting Mateen had outstanding warrants from previous incidents involving Jeffries' apparent false imprisonment and battery in another city.

Floyd Mayweather is a free man
And the world is a greater place now because of it. (sarcasm)Boxer Floyd Mayweather was released from the Clark County (Las Vegas) Detention Center early Friday morning. He's been taking up residence there since June 1st. And he became a jailbird after pleading guilty to domestic battery charges.
But he got a plea deal. That deal reduced the charges and limited the amount of time he had to spend in jail. He spent a total of 60-days of the 90 he was sentenced to in prison.
And as an added bonus, Mayweather has to reapply for a boxing license so he can again bring in the millions that somehow, big name boxers such as he bring in.
Of course the immediate question by the inquisitive scribes documenting his release were not about his time in jail and not about whether or not he was sorry for what he did. Nor were they about whether or not he learned anything in jail.
Rather they were all about "Where's the next fight?"
But he answered none of those questions. He just walked out, got into a car and left the premises.

Post Fight Fight steals show from Klitschko/Chisora fight
Does the headline make sense to you?
No, well, neither did what happened after the Vitali Klitschko/Dereck Chisora fight. A fight already highlighted by Chisora's attempt at slapping Kiltschko during the weigh-in.
Klitschko got the win, a unanimous decision. But it was the post-fight press conference where the fun began.
That's when David Haye, another heavyweight contender who allegedly was at the fight as an analyst for a British Network, called out Klitschko.
But it gets better.
Somehow, Chisora gets involved, they go back and forth, with Haye insulting Chisora and Chisora saying something about wanting to "shoot" Haye. Haye then tells Chisora to say something to his face...which he does. That's when Haye throws an elbow....
And the chaos begins. Boxing continues its de-evolution and heads towards being the WWE
Oh...by the way...Chisora was taken into custody by German police early Sunday morning while trying to get on a plane back home, police are apparently looking for Haye.

Happy Birthday to the Champ

Why? Because even though nearly 30-years have passed since the last time he competed as a boxer, he is still considered by many, if not most as "The Greatest of All-Time".
Sure, we all understand that he is not what he was, but at age 70, who is? The battle with Parkinson's disease has left him a shell of what he was, but he still is who he is.
He's the man who began his life as Louisville boxer Cassius Clay and was an Olympic Hero. He's also the man who became Muhammad Ali and refused to participate in the Vietnam War. And from there, the legend just grew.
His legend was made after his fights with Joe Frazier and those were in the early 1970's. His legend was sealed after fights with George Foreman and Larry Holmes. He became perhaps the most revered athlete of all time.
It's because he was so good with people.
It's because he knew how to make people smile. He knew how to make them laugh. And he still does. Albeit slowly. And sometimes not-so-clearly. But he is loved. He's now loved pretty much universally. He's done what nobody thought could be done. He's changed perceptions. He's changed beliefs and most importantly he's become a celebrated man.
Happy 70th birthday champ, celebrate well and we look forward to saying this again...next year.

Pacquiao gets questionable win over Marquez
The man generally regarded as the best boxer in the world, barely escaped Saturday night with his title. And based on the reaction in the 12 round majority decision that said Manny Pacquiao beat Juan Manuel Marquez, there will be some question on how great Pacquiao currently is.
Since it was a majority decision, obviously, the fight went the distance. And according to the audience response and at least one judge, Pacquiao didn't earn the victory. Officially, his 15th win in a row produced at least a $22 million payday for the fight at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.
It was his third fight with Marquez, this one at the 144lb class, each time, the two fighters stepping up a weight class.
With a gazillion dollar potential payday looming against Floyd Mayweather, this fight left more questions than it answered. It gave Pacquiao another opponent should the oft debated Mayweather fight not happen yet again and it may have given Mayweather...and other fighters hope that the mystique surrounding Pacquiao, may no longer be there.

Smokin' Joe Frazier moves on

67-year-old Joe Frazier, a former heavyweight boxing champion from Philadelphia passed away Monday after a battle with liver cancer.
Frazier will forever be remembered by people my age and fans of boxing as the 1st person to beat Muhammed Ali. Frazier won the title from Ali in a fight at Madison Square Garden in 1971. Their battle throughout that decade were the stuff...and stories of legend.
The two were rivals...and foils for each other for years. Though there was an underlying respect, it rarely showed in public until much later in both legendary fighters lives.
Frazier would lose his title as the heavyweight champ after holding it for 3-years. He lost to George Foreman in Jamaica in 1973. He would only fight two more times after that before retiring in the early '80's.
I got a chance to meet and interview Joe Frazier at a book signing about 4-years-ago at a Barnes and Noble. He wasn't a large man, but he commanded the room, even in his late 60's. He didn't move very well and his speech didn't flow like it did back in the day.
But he still had the mischievous smile of someone who knew more than you did. Someone who was happy with where he now was. It was an honor to meet him and a thrill to get an interview. My only regret was that I didn't get a photo.

Dawson powerbombs Hopkins for the win
Another entry in a strange Saturday night features the WBC Light Heavyweight championship fight between Bernard Hopkins and challenger Chad Dawson.
It only went two somewhat ugly rounds.
The 46-year-old Hopkins was doing what he's done late in his career and slow down the fight with the much younger Dawson. Not many punches had been thrown, there was a lot of bobbing and weaving.
And then we got to the end of Round 2. That is when Hopkins went for a punch on Dawson, landed somewhat on his shoulders and Dawson summarily tossed him off his shoulders into what looked almost like a wrestling "Power Bomb".
Hopkins landed awkwardly on his left shoulder and was unable to finish. Therefore Dawson gets the win...and the title via TKO.
Something tells us there will be a rematch.

Mayweather decks Ortiz, clean or not?

This question may be debated for awhile, particularly if you are a fan of either boxer.
Let's set the scene:
4th Round of Saturday nights big boxing showdown, Floyd Mayweather versus Victor Ortiz for the WBC Welterweight championship. Late in the 4th round, Ortiz is pummeling Mayweather on the ropes and for some unknown reason head-butts him. Ortiz tries to apologize while being penalized a point for the head-butt. Ortiz steps away and tries to apologize again, when Mayweather clocks him.
The move enraged the crowd at the MGM Grand Hotel, and replays showed Ortiz wasn't looking at Mayweather when he got hit.

The question is...was it clean? It's somewhat hard to tell and may be a question for a long time. Ortiz, should have known, that while the fight is still going, don't turn away from your adversary. Ever. And yet he did. And while Mayweather may or may not have taken advantage of a questionable period of time, it doesn't appear he did anything illegal.
We might also mention after the fight, Mayweather let loose a profanity filled tirade against HBO Boxing Analyst Larry Merchant. We won't go into too much detail there other than to say, Floyd has a few image problems and that probably won't help them.
Mayweather pocketed a cool $25 million for the fight and we suspect the fight will help rejuvenate his career which had stalled a bit due to several legal issues.
It also, in our opinion will help marginalize boxing, a once proud sport that has support in some circles and still manages to pull of big payday's somehow for it's fighters. It has appeal in certain circles and it works. But when push comes to shove, is it any different these days than professional wrestling?

Christy Martin Claims Sex Discrimination Cost Her A Win
Gloria Allred is saying that "sex discrimination" was behind the ref's decision to stop the June 4th bout because of a broken right hand for her client, Christy Martin, against Dakota Stone.
Martin's appeal is being heard Monday by the California State Athletic Commission.
Allred claims that a fight involving a male boxer in similar circumstances "would not have been stopped and that officials acted on a misguided notion of female lack of toughness or a greater need to protect female fighters."
