New Hillsborough Inquests Underway At Liverpool

((HT: Sky Sports))

For those of you unfamiliar, it was one of the darkest days in all of football...

96 fans lost their lives and another 766 people were injured after a crush in an enclosed and overcrowded terrace at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium on April 15, 1989. This happened during the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest...

Here's how ITV News covered the disaster

In some of the most shameful cover-ups ever, it was discovered by the Hillsborough Independent Panel in September 2012 that no Liverpool fans were responsible for the deaths. Attempts had been made by local police authorities to conceal what happened- including the changing the content of 116 witness statements relating to the disaster.

British Prime Minister David Cameron, the Chief Constable of South Yorkshire Police- David Crompton, Football Association Chairman- David Bernstein, and Kelvin MacKenzie, then-editor of The Sun newspaper, all apologized at the time.

Here's how BBC's "Panorama" program covered all the shenanigans...

In September 2012, the Panel concluded that up to 41 of the 96 fatalities might have been avoided had they received prompt medical treatment.

A new series of inquests were ordered in December 2012 when the High Court set aside the original death verdicts. The proceedings are expected to last up to 12 months as families hope they finally get the answers they have been chasing for a quarter-century.

The Ministry of Justice has built the biggest courtroom in England and Wales in an office building near the town of Warrington, to host them. A jury will hear the evidence and will be asked to decide on the verdict- an unusual step in inquests like these.

Cal's Ted Agu Dies During Conditioning

((HT: NBC Bay Area))

Cal DL Ted Agu collapsed during what the team doctor described as a "routine conditioning workout" early on Friday. He was transferred by golf cart and then to hospital. Agu collapsed there, was given CPR, and could not be revived...

The medical examiner should take a few weeks before they have any answers, but there may be a big question that will come up...

CBSSports.com, citing an unnamed source, had reported that Agu had sickle-cell trait.

(At present, the HQ can't find the link to that story, but Jeff Faraudo from the San Jose Mercury News has a source telling CBSSports.com that Cal knew)

A Cal spokesman would not confirm Agu's sickle-cell trait condition...

Here's coverage from Berkeley

Here's the release from Cal Athletics:

"At this time, we are deeply saddened to inform you that Ted Agu, one of our student-athletes and a member of our football team, passed away tragically this morning. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ted’s family and friends, our players and coaches, and our University family. Our student-athletes are our priority and we are providing counseling services for our players. Please bear with us as we work to inform personally those closest to Ted; we will provide more information as it becomes available.

“This is a very difficult time for our football family,” said Sonny Dykes, Head Football Coach. “Ted was a remarkable young man and a member of this family who was highly respected and loved by his teammates and coaching staff. He had an incredible passion for life and will be deeply missed.”

Athletics Director, Sandy Barbour, said, “Our heartfelt condolences go out to Ted’s family. This is a very painful time for the entire Cal family; in the days and weeks ahead, my focus will be on providing every member of our community the support and information they need to get through this time. I would ask that media please respect and understand how this tragedy is impacting Ted’s family, his teammates, friends and the members of our campus community. We will get through this together.”

This Sucks: Philip Seymour Hoffman Dies At 46

According to the Wall Street Journal and others...

Multi-talented actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead in his New York City apartment...

The HQ isn't going to make some kind of crack about dying, Lebowski, or anything like that...

We would just like to remember him for being the bad ass he was...
Here's a scene from "Moneyball" where he is Oakland manager Art Howe being introduced to the wunderkind Peter Brand...
((HT: Columbia Pictures))

The New York Police Department is investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will be determining the exact cause of death...

The Houston Chronicle talked to Art Howe after the movie came out and Howe was less than pleased about his portrayal:

Q: What was it like to be portrayed on screen and how did you feel you were portrayed?

A: First of all, Philip Seymour Hoffman physically didn’t resemble me in any way. He was a little on the heavy side. And just the way he portrayed me was very disappointing and probably 180 degrees from what I really am, so that was disappointing too.

Q: Was the contract an issue? I know that was a big thing in the movie and almost how they introduced you in the movie.

A: That was fictitious. They didn’t do their homework as far as the movie was concerned because I was on a two-year contract through 2003. I had another year after that. My agent always took care of my contract; I never negotiated with Billy, especially not in the hallway of the clubhouse. Never happened.

UGA Basketball Upsets Mizzou For Fox

((HT: SECDN/Georgia Dogs))

UGA head men's basketball coach Mark Fox lost his dad five days ago and his Bulldogs team went to Columbia to play the 21st-ranked team in the country... and the team that was ranked 242nd in the RPI came out with an emotional win.

Fox tried to get home to Kansas in time after the Bulldogs game in Washington, D.C. on Friday, but didn’t make it before his dad passed. He went home to Kansas on Saturday, returned to Athens to prep the team before the Missouri game on Sunday and Monday. He went back to Kansas Tuesday before meeting the team in Columbia.

“To win at an old Big Eight school the day after my father passed was very special for me,” Fox told reporters postgame.

Here's the quick version of the highlights as they won 70-64 in overtime...

But leave it to the Mizzou fan base to mock Fox when he broke down on the bench late in overtime...

Mississippi state troopers also say two vehicles, they don't think are related to Garner's passing, ran him over as well. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation's Accident Investigation Division has taken over the investigation.

Here's the statement from head coach Larry Blakeney on Garner's passing...
((HT: Troy Athletics))
