Bironas BAC Comes Back .218

Toxicology reports have come back in the initial inquests into the death of former Tennessee Titans kicker Rod Bironas have come back and the news isn't good at all...
.218- or almost three times the legal limit...
A low level of Valium was also detected in his system.
The report also concluded the 36-year-old died from blunt force trauma received after he lost control of his car a mile from his home back on September 21st.

Lutzenkirchen Monday Update: Alcohol Suspected

Sadly, this is not a surprise...
In the Byington article, Georgia state troopers are suspecting that alcohol is involved in the auto accident that killed former Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen and Georgia baseball player Ian Davis.
Blood samples were taken from those two and Troup County (GA) coroner Jeff Davis says that results could take a few weeks to be finalized. The other two passengers are suspected to have alcohol in their system at the time of the crash, but blood has not been drawn.

According to the Auburn Football Twitter account, a memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 8PM at Lassiter High School's football stadium in Marietta. Supporters are being asked by the Lutzenkirchen family to wear orange and blue.

The University is trying to figure out how to properly respect his legacy and make sure #43 won't be forgotten.
It was an act as simple as rolling the trees at Toomer's Corner out of respect in a somber tribute.

Auburn Speaks On Lutzenkirchen Tragedy

The Auburn family has spoken out publicly for the first time since it was released that former tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen was killed in a rollover crash early Sunday morning...
"I’m deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Philip Lutzenkirchen. He was a great young man who touched the lives of everyone he knew in a positive way," Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said. "On the field, Philip was a great player and competitor, but more importantly, he was a great teammate and friend off the field. My thoughts and prayers are with Philip’s parents, Mike and Mary, and all of his family and friends who are grieving his passing. This is a sad day for the entire Auburn family. I find peace knowing that even though Philip was taken from us too soon, that he lived his life to the fullest, leaving a lifetime of great memories for his family and friends to cherish forever."
Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs:
"Philip’s death is a devastating tragedy for his family, the Auburn family and his countless friends. Today is also a profoundly sad day for the Auburn Athletics family, who loved and respected Philip not only as a great player but more importantly as a friend and the epitome of an Auburn man.
"I came to know Philip well and I admired everything about who he was and the way he lived his life. He had a strong faith, a big heart and a burning desire to help others. Philip was a bright light this world desperately needed, and his death leaves a void that can’t possibly be filled. My prayers, my thoughts and my heart go out to his wonderful parents, Mike and Mary, their entire family and his many grieving friends.”

Philip Lutzenkirchen, a member of the 2010 Auburn national championship team and one of the most popular players in recent Tigers history, died in an automobile accident early Sunday morning, AUC has learned.
He was 23.
At this time, no other details are known.
Lutzenkirchen was a graduate of Lassiter high School in suburban Atlanta and had Hutson Mason as his quarterback with the Trojans. He went to Auburn where he ws one of the most accomplished tight ends in recent decades.

UPDATE: The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer's Ryan Black can confirm the passing- having spoken with a state trooper who worked the scene.
The accident happened shortly after 3AM and Black caught up with Master Trooper B.N. Talley...
From Black's piece:
"It happened at the intersection of Upper Big Springs Road and Lower Big Springs Road," Talley said. "The vehicle was a 2006 Chevy Tahoe and the driver missed a stop sign at the intersection of those two roads, which is more or less a 'T-intersection.' They traveled through the intersection off into a churchyard. They were out out of control for about 450 feet."
At that point, Talley said, the vehicle overturned, ejecting all four passengers.
"Philip was one of them," Talley said," and he was killed at the scene."
Bulldawg Illustrated is also reporting that UGA baseball player, Ian Davis, has also passed away in the accident.
Black is also reporting in an update that Lutzenkirchen was not wearing a seat belt.

On Live Radio Nationals Matt Williams Involved In Hit And Run Accident
Wednesday morning Washington Nationals manager Matt Williams was on live radio with The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan radio in D.C. when his vehicle is rear ended while in the middle of the interview.

Williams has ice water in his veins, didn't seem rattled at all.
The Nats manager was on his way to the ballpark when he became a victim of a hit and run calmly describing the action unfolding in front of him.

Montalvo Leaving Naval Academy

A lot of people will admit that Miami Immaculata-LaSalle QB Rafi Montalvo is lucky to be alive...
Over Thanksgiving weekend 2012, he was involved in an auto accident back home as he was celebrating the holiday with his family on break from his time at the Naval Academy. He was a passenger in a car when it careened into a house. He spent 16 days in a coma and returned to campus in time for this football season...
Here was the story at the time of his return as the third-string QB on the depth chart at the time of the accident...

Doctors told him last week that he couldn't return to the playing field because of the scarring on his brain sustained in the accident and recovery. He has resigned from the Academy and has returned home looking to be a volunteer coach at his alma mater- also trying to finish his academics at some point. His head coach could not be more proud- in talking with Markus: “Rafi's an amazing young man,” Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said Wednesday. “The dedication and the perseverance he had in his rehab, to survive his traumatic ordeal, but also to do all the rehab and all the things that the military put him through [and] the medical people put him through to get back to the acadmy was pretty strenuous deal. For him to come back to the academy was a great accomplishment. ... I'm disappointed that it couldn't work out for him, but I'm super happy where he is in his life. I'm so grateful that Rafi is still here and being able to function as a normal person.”
And the HQ looks forward to seeing him on the field working to make those younger than him as much of as an example as he is...

Troy Football Player Dies In Mississippi

Sadly, this one has problems all over it...
Troy University says football player Jadarius Garner died near his hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi very early Thursday morning. His body was found lying in the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 61.
Mississippi state troopers also say two vehicles, they don't think are related to Garner's passing, ran him over as well. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation's Accident Investigation Division has taken over the investigation.

Garner transferred from Jones County Community College in Mississippi two seasons ago. He had even been named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week on September 9th of this year for his efforts against Savannah State. The Sophomore defensive end finished the 2013 season with 21 tackles, including 7 for loss.He also had 3 sacks, 3 hurries, and 2 forced fumbles- the TFL's, forced fumble, 2 sacks, a hurry, and 6 tackles came in the game against the Tigers.

DEVELOPING: UCLA WR Pasquale Killed In Auto Accident

Disturbing news out of suburban Los Angeles where freshman UCLA football wide receiver Nicholas Pasquale has died after being struck by a vehicle in his home town of San Clemente during the Bruins off week. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Coroner’s office said on their website that Pasquale was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street.
The accident occurred around 1:30AM local time this morning and the investigation is ongoing...
UCLA’s student-run newspaper, The Daily Bruin, reported Pasquale’s death...
Pasquale was entering his freshman season as a walk-on wide receiver...

Jaime Ortiz, coach of the San Clemente High School football team who was a defensive coordinator throughout much of Pasquale’s high school career, said Pasquale was the “heart and soul” of the Tritons’ 2011 CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division runner-up team.
“We’re a one town, one team high school. It’s a very tight community here in San Clemente, and the (Pasquale) family has had a great impact on San Clemente High School,” Ortiz said. “It’s just something that’s sending shockwaves through our community. As a family, we just have to get close together and get through this all together.”

OSG High: 3 Dead In Fatal New Mexico Rollover Includes TAMU And Utah Players (UPDATED)

Three teens including a freshman football player at Texas A&M died in a car accident in New Mexico just north of Albuquerque near the town of Cuba.
Polo Manukainiu was driving back from Utah Monday night. He was a two-time all-district defensive end for Euless Trinity High School.
Before the trip he tweeted, "22 hour drive back to Texas on no sleep. Oh my," around 5:30 local time Monday afternoon.
On his twitter feed, there were those who wished that he would be careful including one message that said: Pull over & get some sleep. We don't need another tragedy. Be safe & God bless. #gigem
According to Emmanuel Gutierrez of the New Mexico State Police, five people were in a Toyota SUV (pictured right, thanks KRQE-TV) at the time of the crash. Two of them were ejected and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Utah football recruit Gaius Vaenuku and current Euless Trinity player Lolo Uhatafe were also killed. A fourth unidentified person has been airlifted in critical condition. The condition of the fifth person is unknown.
Reaction is starting to pour out of College Station...
"Heart hurts waking up to news about Polo.. I think I speak for everyone on our team when I say we love you brother you will be missed," A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel tweeted.
Manukainiu was a two-time All-District 6-5A defensive end in high school, and helped lead his team to an undefeated regular season as a senior. The redshirt freshman was a recreation, parks and tourism sciences major.

1600 UPDATE: It appears, according to NMSP, that the older brother of Lolo Uhatafe was driving the SUV. 18-year-old Siaosi Uhatafe, and his father, Salesi were the two who were injured.
The New Mexico State Police said the driver, Siaosi Uhatafe, was the only person in the vehicle who was wearing a seat belt.

Words cannot express our devastation over the loss of Gaius. This is a sad day not only for University of Utah football, but for everyone whose lives Gaius crossed or would have crossed but for this tragedy. Our hearts go out to Gaius’ and Salesi’s families, and to the Texas A&M coaches and players. We are praying for the speedy recovery of Salesi and his father.”

OSG High: 6 Teens Injured In Car Crash, Some Recent HS Football Grads

This has not been a good off-season for Georgia high school football...
Recently, the HQ has had to report on the death of three Brooks County (GA) football players in a truck crash. Now, we shift to just south of Augusta and where six teens — five that were on the Screven County (GA) High roster last year — were injured in a crash early Sunday morning.
Some are recovering from serious injuries, but two remain in the hospital awaiting surgery, according to friends and family.
And, frankly, looking at how the Georgia State Patrol has described the accident, the Hq has no idea how any of these people survived the crash...
Here's what the GSP says happened:
The accident report says the truck was traveling “at an extremely high rate of speed” when it went off the road onto the south shoulder and into a ditch.
The truck traveled in the ditch around 624 feet before striking a private driveway with its undercarriage, becoming airborne.
The truck traveled 57 feet in the air before striking a small tree.
Then it traveled 72 feet, hit a fence, entered a pasture where it traveled 336 feet before striking a second fence.
The truck began spinning counterclockwise, moving another 48 feet, before striking a second tree with its side.
Then it rotated clockwise another 18 feet before stopping in a wooded area.
Chance Harkins, a Gamecocks DB last season and enrolled at the University of the Cumberlands, was slated for surgery Monday for pelvic injuries, but it has been pushed back to Wednesday because of other surgeries in the hospital that he is currently in- according to his father, Shayne's, Facebook page. Harkins also suffered head trauma.
Both Harkins and TJ Heinemeyer (pictured, right from his Facebook page) suffered head injuries and were listed in
critical condition. Jeffrey Friese also suffered head injuries as he was behind the wheel of a Ford pick-up early Sunday morning.
Passengers in the truck were Harkins, Heinemeyer, Hyrum Robert “Bobby” Hodges, Dylan Edward Koch, and a 16-year-old minor
Heinemeyer and Friese, who graduated from Screven County High last year, were listed as offensive linemen.
Koch, a 2013 grad, was listed as a linebacker and suffered "upper body injuries," and the 16-year-old, whose lower body was injured, was listed as a wide receiver.
Holly Bragg caught up with Holly J. Smith- a mother whose daughter is friends with some of the injured:
From Smith through Bragg on Monday night:
“TJ (Heinemeyer) hasn’t shown any improvement. Chance (Harkins) is doing a little better. They both need surgery, but the brain injuries are the priorities. (The 16-year-old’s) surgery went well and he is resting and hungry. Jeffrey (Friese) and his family went home so he could rest. Dylan (Koch) is staying at the hospital to be by Chance’s side and Bobby (Hodges) is still the hero.”
Hodges reportedly helped responding troopers identify the others in the truck, she said.
All six were taken to a hospital in the Screven County seat of Sylvania. But some were transported to Georgia Regents Medical Center in Augusta.
Harkins, Friese and Koch are charged with not wearing a seat belt, according to GSP reports. Friese is also charged with DUI, reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.

OSG High: Three Brooks County Players Killed In Traffic Accident (UPDATED)
Three Brooks County (GA) High School football players died following a morning wreck near the town of Quitman in 
southwest Georgia. The teenagers were reportedly on their way to football practice at the high school when the accident occurred.

Valdosta Today is reporting the deaths as Brooks seniors Jicarrie Watkins, Shawn Waters and Johnie Parker, a junior- all pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. A fourth student, identified as De'Vron Whitfield, was taken from the scene by helicopter and remains in critical condition. It is believed that Whitfield was life-flighted to Shands Hospital as WCTV-TV reports that he was ejected from the vehicle.
Watkins was an all-region defensive lineman for Maurice Freeman's Trojans in 2012. He wore #72 in 2012.
Shawn Waters was a rising senior at running back and linebacker and wore #32 in 2012.
Johnie Parker was rising junior at tight end and linebacker last season wore #26 in 2012.
De'Vron Whitfield played running back and defensive back and wore #7 in 2012.
The team was set to be a top-10 team in Double-A this year in Georgia High School football...

Brooks County Schools is saddened by the tragic car accident that killed three of its high school students and left one in critical condition. Counselors are available to support students and staff during this difficult time.
Brooks County Schools ask that the community, students and staff please keep the families of these students in this tragic accident in their prayers.
At this time we are unable to confirm any further details. There will be a prayer vigil at 6pm tonight in the cafeteria at Brooks County High School
PM UPDATE: According to a later post by Chappelle, it appears the driver of the pick-up- a Ford Expedition- lost control of it, veered to the left, and struck a tree.
Troopers say they weren't wearing their seat belts and that speed may have been a factor in the crash.
Head Coach Maurice Freeman released the following statement on his Facebook page:
In God We Trust. One way or the other the Trojans will still Bring That Hammer.
RIP Trojan LB's Shawn, Watkins and Johnny. Love Coach Freeman.

UK's Lowery In Serious Condition After Car Wreck
Ashely Lowery got the attention of a lot of college recruiters with this run during his time at White County (GA) High School...
And rightfully so... the million plus hits ended up getting him a lot of views and a home at the University of Kentucky. As a sophomore, he was a top-five team tackler as a defensive back.
Saturday, Lowery was involved in a one car crash where he was apparently ejected from his car and thrown close to 100 feet. There is no word yet as to whether or not the weather and wet conditions played a factor.
Lowery is in serious condition with the extent of his injuries unknown...

OSG High: 3 Killed, 6 Hospitalized in Golf Team Van Crash

A crash involving two minivans in rural Michigan has killed a high school golf coach, one of his players, and another person travelling in the other van in a two-car accident.
Four other members of the Grayling (MI) High School golf team were in critical condition after a Monday crash 25 miles east of Traverse City. The condition of a fifth golfer was not immediately available. The names of the victims were not released.
The 18-year-old, Louis Menard had just celebrated his 18th birthday and weas set to go to the University of Michigan in the fall. The coach, Jason Potter, was in his first year on the job. And the third person killed, Cassandra Peterson, was in the second vehicle with her mother and 3-year-old daughter.
Police say seven people survived the crash and were transported to Munson Hospital in Traverse City.
Two are listed in critical condition, two in serious conditions, and three in fair condition.

The superintendent for the school system released this statement:
"This is a very sad day as our golf team was involved in an accident. The entire Crawford Ausable family's thoughts and prayers are with the families of the students, coach, and the members of the other vehicle. We are anxiously awaiting details from the State Police."
