Cam Newton Out of Hospital

((ht: wcnc.com))

The good news for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is that in the long run, he's going to be okay.

But the bad is for the next few weeks, he's going to be dealing with two fractured vertebrae in his back. Those the result of Tuesday afternoons accident that sent his Dodge Ram pickup truck rolling over three times before coming to a landing on an overpass near the Panthers stadium.

Witnesses told police about seeing a car trying to cross the street Newton was driving on when it struck the QB's truck starting the action. The driver of the car was not injured, Newton was transported to the hospital where he stayed overnight.

Newton's status for Sunday's game vs. Tampa Bay is very much in question. The team has been preparing backup Derek Anderson in case Newton is unable to go.

((NOTE--Wednesday afternoon--Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Anderson will get the start))

The injury Newton suffered is very similar to the back injury Dallas QB Tony Romo has been dealing with. Romo has played successfully, but his game is different than Newton's. Cam relies more on a physical running style, Romo does not.

BREAKING NEWS: Cam Newton Injured in Charlotte Crash (UPDATED: Transported As Precaution, Injury Update)

((ht: charlotteobserver.com))

Uh oh, this doesn't sound so good.

The Charlotte Observer reports Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was injured around 12:30 Tuesday afternoon in a car crash. Newton's pickup truck and another car appear to have collided on a bridge near the teams offices at Bank of America stadium.

More RIGHT HERE

An Observer photographer was apparently on the scene shortly after the wreck and was able to identify Newton as he was being put on a stretcher. No word on the possible injuries was given. 120 Sports is reporting that Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Police confirm that he was able to communicate afterwards with them.

WBTV-TV has a closer photo of Newton:

Roads in the I-277/Church St. area in uptown Charlotte were closed at the time of the report and more information will hopefully be coming later in the day.

Video from the Observer reporter on the scene:

1330 UPDATE: Steve Crump at WBTV in Charlotte is reporting, via his Twitter, that Newton was transported as a precaution and that the Panthers QB wasn't injured and didn't want to go, but he did.

1530 UPDATE: From the Panthers via their Twitter:

Further testing revealed Cam Newton has two transverse process fractures in his lower back and no further internal injuries

For those of you not in the medical profession, it's the same inury that Tony Romo had after the game with the Redskins

Panthers And Saints Taking Swings At Each Other

((HT: NFL on FOX))

Let's face it, the NFC South is dirty for the wrong reasons...

And it seems to have taken on a life if its own in today's Panthers-Saints game when Carolina QB Cam Newton went over the top and scored- despite the actions of the New Orleans Defense

In the pile, about 45 seconds in if you missed it, was the Brandon Williams punch that led to his ejection. Cameron Jordan and Ronald Powell are the two Saints that, apparently, were the recipients of the swings.

Expect an envelope from the league to visit Williams' locker

BREAKING: Auburn's Lutzenkirchen, UGA Baseball's Davis Die In Car Accident (CONFIRMED w/Updates)

((HT: Auburn Undercover))

This is straight from them and there aren't may details at the moment"

Philip Lutzenkirchen, a member of the 2010 Auburn national championship team and one of the most popular players in recent Tigers history, died in an automobile accident early Sunday morning, AUC has learned.

He was 23.

At this time, no other details are known.

Lutzenkirchen was a graduate of Lassiter high School in suburban Atlanta and had Hutson Mason as his quarterback with the Trojans. He went to Auburn where he ws one of the most accomplished tight ends in recent decades.

His first flash with fame came in high school with this amazing play

And he was one of the most relied-upon receivers for Cam Newton in his time on the Plains
((HT: SEC on CBS))

More when we know more, but the HQ's thoughts and prayers to the families at Lassiter and Auburn...

UPDATE: The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer's Ryan Black can confirm the passing- having spoken with a state trooper who worked the scene.

The accident happened shortly after 3AM and Black caught up with Master Trooper B.N. Talley...

From Black's piece:

"It happened at the intersection of Upper Big Springs Road and Lower Big Springs Road," Talley said. "The vehicle was a 2006 Chevy Tahoe and the driver missed a stop sign at the intersection of those two roads, which is more or less a 'T-intersection.' They traveled through the intersection off into a churchyard. They were out out of control for about 450 feet."

At that point, Talley said, the vehicle overturned, ejecting all four passengers.

"Philip was one of them," Talley said," and he was killed at the scene."

Bulldawg Illustrated is also reporting that UGA baseball player, Ian Davis, has also passed away in the accident.

Black is also reporting in an update that Lutzenkirchen was not wearing a seat belt.

ICYMI: Forbes Article Cost Cam Newton $10K for Illegal Logo

Sponsorship deals are so wrong. And in theory, being featured in Forbes magazine should be "so right" for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton.

And maybe it was, but the interview Newton did, along with the accompanying photos, ended up costing him $10,000.

The reason: A photo taken during the interview that showed a couple of blacked out Under Armour visor clips.

The problem: Under Armour is not an NFL approved product. (They don't bow and pay the league millions to be an "official product")

And yes "Business" people, we get it. If you are Nike and you pay $1 billion to be the "equipment" sponsor for the league, you don't want anyone showing products other than yours.

But flat out, it's stupid. You should be able to wear whatever you want. Unless you...well...never mind.

Cam Newton's Brain "Gets Stuck In Traffic..."

This is what happens sometimes when you host your own charity fundraiser and you get asked questions on the fly...

Cam Newton (or, "Cameron Jerrell Newton" as his mother identified him since he was stuck in traffic and late for his own fundraiser) was asked by the highly-partisan Auburn crowd whether or not he could sing the Auburn fight song for the crowd in attendance...

The running gag was that anything got (or was) "stuck in traffic" when something went wrong on the evening...

You can guess what happened...

Or, you can watch above...

After it was over, Cam admitted that his brain got stuck in traffic...

Although, for the record, the Cam Newton Foundation looks like it will be doing some good things for youth who should be staying in shape and want to make a point to, possibly, even play athletically at the same time in their high school years...

Miss Jackie, Cam's mother, should keep it on the straight and narrow...

ICYMI: (Video) Cam Newton Auburn Cheerleader

Ha!

Props to Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton for staying true to his school.

For those of you who haven't seen it, we have video below of Newton, who attended Wednesday's Auburn hoops win over arch rival Alabama, leading the student section--megaphone in hand, in cheering on the Tigers.

And his team won. Granted, the 49-37 win may have set the game of college basketball back a few decades, but it was kind of a nice thing to see Newton in action.

The video has some post-game comments from Auburn coach Tony Barbee who said if he knew, he'd get Newton out and suit him up. Barbee could use the help as his team is a mere 9-13 this season.

Several of his players were amused as well.

A Closer look at the NCAA investigation of Cam Newton

Cam Newton
((ht: al.com))

And before any Auburn folks out there say "Now what"...just take a deep breath and relax.

According to a story in the Birmingham News, the ups and downs of the NCAA investigation of Cam Newton, his family, Auburn and Mississippi State nearly got Newton pulled twice and showed that there was no evidence what so ever tying Auburn to anything against the rules.

Reporter Charles Goldberg got a hold of the NCAA Investigative documents and those documents showed several things. Among them, after determining former Miss. St. player Kenny Rogers and Cecil Newton tried to get money from Miss. St, the NCAA couldn't figure out whether Rogers acted as an agent or not.

They decided not.

Read the entire story from Al.com RIGHT HERE

You can go to the Ledger-Enquirer's website to find the documents in full RIGHT HERE

Essentially, this story reinforces Auburn's claim of innocence. It also seemed to show the NCAA, while being somewhat thorough and detailed in their investigation, couldn't figure out exactly what they should do about the situation.

Ultimately, nobody ended up sanctioned because of this. Yes, Kenny Rogers and Cecil Newton got a bit of a slap on the wrist and Mississippi State was never seriously questioned, but nobody was seriously harmed here.

The question, we hope, opened a bit of a Pandora's box and we also hope it is one the NCAA will quickly close. But we suspect, given their slow reaction and investigation of just about everything, this type of issue will come up again.

And yes, conspiracy theorists, this should put the Cam Newton/Auburn alleged shenanigans story to rest...once and for all.

NCAA to Auburn: Cam Newton investigation is done

((ht: al.com))
Cam Newton

Well, regardless of what you think, the people in charge with investigating the recruiting of Cam Newton to Auburn have decided that nothing wrong was done.

NCAA investigators say they couldn't find any "Burden of Proof" in their investigation, one that has lasted over one year.

The speculation and accusations made ranged from the bizarre to the greedy, but again, the NCAA says "Hearsay and Speculation" aren't enough for them to prove anything was done wrong.

Read the full story from AL.com RIGHT HERE

You can read the NCAA letter to Auburn RIGHT HERE

The NCAA says they interviewed over 80 people during the course of their investigation and though some pretty serious accusations were thrown out in places like HBO's "Real Sports", on the radio, attributed to Mississippi State and others, investigators were unable to confirm or prove any of it.

And yes, we are aware that Cecil Newton was alleged to have taken money or marketed his son to schools. He got in some trouble for it, and Cam was suspended...for one day. The NCAA determined that Cam didn't know about it.

So, life goes on and while we are sure there will plenty of people saying this is a "Travesty of Justice", it doesn't really matter. Much like Casey Anthony, even though everyone assumes that it is a given they are guilty, you still have to offer rock solid proof in order for the case to proceed.
