Panthers And Saints Taking Swings At Each Other

((HT: NFL on FOX))

Let's face it, the NFC South is dirty for the wrong reasons...

And it seems to have taken on a life if its own in today's Panthers-Saints game when Carolina QB Cam Newton went over the top and scored- despite the actions of the New Orleans Defense

In the pile, about 45 seconds in if you missed it, was the Brandon Williams punch that led to his ejection. Cameron Jordan and Ronald Powell are the two Saints that, apparently, were the recipients of the swings.

Expect an envelope from the league to visit Williams' locker

OSG High: Did A Team Go Too Far In Blocking A Special Needs Athlete...???

((HT: ABC 15 Phoenix))

It was the last game of the regular season for two teams in the Phoenix area- Mountain Ridge and North Canyon.

Mountain Ridge was up 40 early in the fourth quarter when they put in an autistic student as a defensive player. North Canyon went on the whistle and played as normal. And when Mountain Ridge's defensive players saw the student getting manhandled, all hell broke loose.

Both benches emptied and the game was called a double-forfeit since both teams had ejections that didn't leave enough players on the field to play the rest of the game.

Mountain Ridge maintains that North Canyon knew about the athlete. North Canyon says they didn't know.

Here's Nohe Graf catching up with the mom and the athlete at the center of it all...

Mountain Ridge finishes 1-9 and North Canyon 0-10 counting the double-forfeit.

Yes, We're Showing Another Rugby Highlight

((HT: Sky Sports))

Mainly, because it was the first time ever that a player has been sent off with a straight red card offense in the Grand Final (the sport's version of the Roman Numeral Classic in England)...

The HQ has always heard that Wigan is more a rugby town than a football town and this crowd shows it.

The Grand Final was Wigan and St. Helens- which St. Helens would win 14-6, but Ben Flower "lost the plot" as they say overseas...

Boy, did he ever...

We do dig the headset cam that the lead ref has wrapped around his head...

But, for those of you interested, here's the full highlights...

If You Can't Beat 'Em, Groin 'Em

((HT: RedditCFB's Vine/The Big Lead))

Kamu Grugier-Hill, a linebacker for Eastern Illinois, was ejected from his team’s season-opening 42-20 loss to Minnesota...

Here's how...

While, initially, escaping any kind of trouble the cameras caught him in that replay above and the refs tossed him.

Nice work, cup checker...

Another Minor League Manager Nutty

((HT: MiLB.com))

This was not the time to get an ejection... top nine in a tie game at home.
But it happened and Winston-Salem manager Tommy Thompson made it count.

He leaves his shoes and cap on home plate after being ejected in the eventual loss to Carolina

BASTA: Giants Choke In Atrocious Fashion To Drop Series To Nationals

((HT: BASTA their own selves/Ben Leonard))

The Giants came to Washington hoping to take a series victory. They leave undeserving to play in our nation’s capital, more fit to play in Williamsport. Holding a 5-0 lead after three innings, they managed to lay an egg and fall 14-6, representing a 14-1 run for the Nationals after the third.

The Giants tagged the once overhyped Stephen Strasburg for five runs in four innings, forcing him to throw seventy-nine pitches. The five runs he allowed were the most runs he had allowed at home since his last game in 2012 before he was shut down for precautionary reasons. Gregor Blanco set the tone right off the bat, working Strasburg to a 3-2 count, and proceeding to launch a solo homer to right. The light-hitting Blanco’s shot traveled an estimated 399 feet. Travis Ishikawa added another solo shot of his own in the second, putting the score at 2-0. The Giants scored three runs in the third inning behind a Michael Morse RBI double, an Ishikawa sacrifice fly, and a Brandon Crawford RBI single, a rarity these days for the ice cold shortstop. He has posted a 50 wRC+ and a .177 average since the All-Star Break.

How could an atrocity like this happen to a team that lit up Washington’s ace? The game was setting up to be a laugher after three, with the Nationals still not mustering a hit off of Vogelsong. That certainly changed in the fourth, with three doubles off of Vogelsong that scored two runs, cutting the San Francisco lead to 5-2. A blip on the radar, but the Giants still appeared poised to win handily.

Jake Peavy was ejected in the third inning for arguing with the umpiring crew about balls and strikes, even though he wasn’t in the game. He was leaning over the dugout railing, and had been visibly jawing with the crew for the whole game, despite a 5-0 lead. Peavy was a stone’s throw from my position at the yard. Peavy’s passion for the game is appreciated, but he took it too far on Sunday.

It all came apart in the sixth. Hunter Pence added a sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 6-2. That would be all the good news the Giants could conjure up the rest of the game. Jeremy Affeldt came in after Adam LaRoche struck out to start the frame and promptly served up a home run to Ian Desmond and the momentum to Washington. A combination of Affeldt and Jean Machi could not retire any of the next nine Washington hitters, giving up six runs in the process. Affeldt could not get an out, and was charged for four runs on five hits. His offspeed pitches were hanging, and he meated several fastballs, and even threw a “scud” with his heater, a wild pitch that scored a run. A 6-2 lead quickly became a 8-6 deficit.

The wheels came off in the bottom of the eight. Juan Gutierrez found way too much of the plate, making the game a 14-6 laugher. Gutierrez gave up five runs in the frame, including home runs to Bryce Harper and Danny Espinosa. Bochy let the righty go thirty-seven pitches, conceding the game to Washington, as he wanted to rest the rest of his bullpen.

The bullpen’s implosion is a troubling sign for this ballclub. The unit gave up eleven runs in only four and two-thirds innings of work. In the month of August, they have posted a 4.04 ERA. (not including Sunday) Pitching and defense are supposedly the core of this team, and it certainly didn’t look like it today. Michael Morse continued his plodding defense in the outfield, making some bad runs on balls that would have been caught by Gregor Blanco. Part of the problem was Angel Pagan’s absence, who has sat out the last two games nursing a calf strain he sustained on Friday.

Duane and Mike discuss the loss
((HT: CSN Bay Area))

Notes:

Jake Peavy (2-3, 3.58) will look for his third straight victory Monday night against the Rockies, the first game of a seven-game homestand for the club. Peavy will toe the rubber against the young lefty Tyler Matzek. (2-9, 5.38) A pigeon stayed on the field for the latter part of the game, on the outfield grass just behind the shortstop. It made it on the big-screen, causing many Washington fans to dub it the “rally pigeon.”

Myrtle Beach Manager Throws Epic, Disrobing Nutty

((HT: MiLB.com))

The HQ likes what Joe Mikulik can do from time to time when he's bent out of shape...
Yesterday, was no different...

The call went against his Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Mikulik disagreed, and all hell broke loose...

Kenny Powers would have been proud of his fellow Myrtle Beacher...

Robin Ventura Throws A Nutty, Hawk Is Right There With Him

((HT: MLB.com))

This whole home plate-blocking thing is getting out of hand...

And the manager's challenge was, by the letter of the law, a great idea- even if the rule is silly...

The White Sox had a lead until this play last night in San Francisco

It's just not baseball

And the HQ agrees with Hawk on this one...

Mike Redmond Throws A Nutty, Play-By-Play Agrees

((HT: MLB.com))

The land of instant replay has been a bit of a minefield this season...

But when things go wrong and they're not corrected, managers have an opportunity to express themselves appropriately
Like Marlins manager Mike Redmond did last night.

Awful Announcing led us to the play-by-play call of Rich Walz and Tommy Hutton- the latter of whom went nuts

Redmond got the chance to talk about his undressing last night for a really fun presser after the game...

Reno And Albuquerque Raise Jacksonville And Birmingham's Bench Clearing Brawlness

((HT: KRNV-TV))

Yesterday, the HQ showed you what happens when two teams play each other for a week solid.

Jacksonville and Birmingham go after each other for 17 MINUTES SOLID!

Tonight, it was triple-A's turn at the brawling as Reno and the Isotopes went at it

KOLO-TV's Ben Ross has the overhead

According to Larry Brown Sports, there were ten ejections including Reno manager Phil Nevin- and this was in the second inning of the game. And this is the first time in a while that the HQ has seen anything drift in to the stands like that.

Here's the long version

"That Is One Heck Of An Exit..."

((HT: Deadspin/Kevin Weinheimer))

This is the first time that the HQ has seen this after an ejection...

Last night, as Norfolk was playing Charlotte in triple-A, Quintin Berry for Norfolk gets a single to right, squares off with the first base umpire, and then completes his actions the only way a baseball player knows to at times...

No word from minor league baseball offices or the Tides themselves if anything else is happening to Berry after his creative display of eff-you to the guys dressed in black...

An Accidental Backswing Causes Concussions And Ejections

((HT: MLB))

It all starts with a backswing that accidentally (at least, that's the look of it, anyway...) clocks Braves catcher Gerald Laird in the head and he gets an early exit and concussion tests.

Then, because of baseball being "Quien es mas macho," the Rockies and Braves game yesterday goes downhill and degrades into hit batsmen, ejections, and managers not taking any guff...

Here's the exchange in an edited version...

Machado Suspended For Five Games For Bat Toss

((HT: MLB.com/MASN))

Major League Baseball announced that Orioles 3B Manny Machado got a five-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his bat toss in the team's 11-1 loss Sunday.

He felt that he had been thrown at on a previous pitch and tried to exact some kind of revenge on Oakland reliever Fernando Abad.

Gary Thorne's analysis was pretty spot on...

Abad got a fine and no suspension...

Manny Machado Misses In Alleged Intentional Bat Toss

((HT: MLB/MASN))

The Baltimore Orioles Manny Machado thought he was thrown at by the Oakland A's Fernando Abad IN A 10-0 GAME THEY WERE LOSING IN...

So, on the next pitch Machado decided to work the hammer throw...

Machado and Abad both got tossed and Oakland won 11-1

No word on if there will be any more discipline from the league...

This comes on the heels of Machado prompting the benches to clear Friday night. He took offense to a swipe tag by the A's Josh Donaldson, threw his helmet down, said lots of angry words which was enough for the dugouts to empty before Machado was steered away.

The two incidents combined, yeah, that might the attention of the powers that be...

Miami And Texas Tech Have Issues With Each Other

((HT: ESPN/NCAA))

First, let's go with the incident at first base where the Miami first base coach, Gino DiMare, tapped the Red Raiders first baseman, Eric Gutierrez, on the top of the head like one of those "Hey, son, what do you think you're doing" moves...

From Luke Zimmerman's Vine

And, then, it carried down 90 feet and led to three ejections...
Gutierrez, DiMare, and after home plate- Tech assistant J-Bob Thomas. Gutierrez is the Big 12 Conference home run leader. So, advantage goes to Miami on man power used.

Tech won 3-0 and advance to the regional final...

Here's the long version

To go with that, Texas A&M beat rice in 10 innings 9-8 on a game-winning wild pitch...

John Moore May Not Be Around For A While

((HT: CBC/NHL))

For this...

The HQ gives PK Subban credit for steering Dale Weise back to the bench since he, probably, couldn't even remember what day of the week it was after the shot to the head...

But John Moore's Dory Funk, Junior impression should get him, at least, a 2-game sit...

What say you...???

Laz Diaz Loves Him Some Laz Diaz

((HT: MLB/YES))

The Angels and the Yankees played a baseball game last night...

But the center of the game's universe seemed to be home plate umpire Laz Diaz- who loves him some Laz Diaz...
Especially if you question a balls and strikes call- or a lot of them...

Here's the call from Michael Kay

And ask Joe Girardi

Ah... umpires...

Girardi Defends Moving ESPN Camera

((HT: ESPN))

After the Michael Pineda ejection last night, the cameras decided to get a look at the "after..."

Yanks manager Joe Girardi wanted nothing to do with the after...

And, then, he went after the network and their big-brotherness

"I think MLB's going to have a problem with ESPN going into our tunnel," Girardi said. "I didn't break the camera, all I did was keep it from going into our tunnel. You guys are acting like I ripped it apart. The camera worked the rest of the game, didn't it? All I did was turn it so it was on the field or the dugout."

The HQ sides with Girardi here...

Pineda Plus Pine Tar=Ejection (UPDATE: He Admits It)

((HT: MLB/YES/ESPN))

Take you back to April 10...Yankees and Red Sox at Yankee Stadium

Michael Pineda of the Yankees got caught with something dark (and, allegedly sticky) on his hand...

Red Sox manager John Farrell said he had heard about the substance Pineda may or may not have been using, but in between innings whatever was there disappeared...

MLB executive vice president of operations Joe Torre talked to Yankees GM Brian Cashman about what may or may not have happened with Pineda on the mound. The Yanks pitcher did not face any discipline since the Red Sox didn't push the issue.

Pineda said it was dirt:

"I don't use pine tar. It's dirt," Pineda said then. "I'm sweating on my hand too much in-between innings."

Takes you to tonight...
Looks like the dirt was there all over again...

And Pineda got tossed...

The HQ knows that, in the minors, the suspension is 10 games. The suspension might be close in the bigs...

2315 UPDATE: Pineda admits that the substance was, in fact, pine tar...

Pineda says, via ESPN, that "it won't happen again."

So Much For Talking About The WBGV Upset Tonight

((HT: Ryan Fagan's Vine))

West Virginia was absolutely trucking Iowa State in Morgantown late in the second half... up 29, 88-59 with 4-plus minutes to go...

Mountaineer Eron Harris became the topic of conversation with his poleaxing of the Cyclones Monte Morris

Harris got tossed, but Bob Huggins should expect a phone call from the Big 12 office for this...

Earlier in the game, ISU's Dustin Hogue was assessed a flagrant 1 for his front kick to a West Virginia player, so it does look like things got a lot out of hand...
