((HT: MLB.com))
And it went downhill from there...
Here's what started it all...
Then, pinch-hitter Reed Johnson came up to complete the at-bat and he got hit in the hand with the next pitch.
Benches clear and we had ejections.
((HT: Ryan Berenz))
In the 6th, Marlins reliever Anthony DeSclafani was ejected after hitting the Brewers' Carlos Gomez.
Then, we had more ejections.
The update from the Marlins:
Giancarlo suffered a laceration on the left side of his face. He is having x-rays and a CT scan performed at a local hospital.

((HT: KRNV-TV))
Yesterday, the HQ showed you what happens when two teams play each other for a week solid.
Jacksonville and Birmingham go after each other for 17 MINUTES SOLID!
Tonight, it was triple-A's turn at the brawling as Reno and the Isotopes went at it
KOLO-TV's Ben Ross has the overhead
According to Larry Brown Sports, there were ten ejections including Reno manager Phil Nevin- and this was in the second inning of the game. And this is the first time in a while that the HQ has seen anything drift in to the stands like that.

Minor League Scrum!!! Minor League Scrum!!!
((HT: MiLB.com))
You'd think these two teams would be really tired of each other...
Jacksonville and Birmingham have been playing each other all week in Jacksonville. And when you play each other... and when you see each other in the same confined space all week- then, sooner or later, something was going to happen.
Strangely enough, it was a fairly innocuous single that added to a lead in the ninth inning that lead to this...
17 MINUTES OF THIS!!!!
Six ejections the HQ expects Southern League president Lori Webb views the above video...

An Accidental Backswing Causes Concussions And Ejections
((HT: MLB))
It all starts with a backswing that accidentally (at least, that's the look of it, anyway...) clocks Braves catcher Gerald Laird in the head and he gets an early exit and concussion tests.
Then, because of baseball being "Quien es mas macho," the Rockies and Braves game yesterday goes downhill and degrades into hit batsmen, ejections, and managers not taking any guff...
Here's the exchange in an edited version...

Miami And Texas Tech Have Issues With Each Other
((HT: ESPN/NCAA))
First, let's go with the incident at first base where the Miami first base coach, Gino DiMare, tapped the Red Raiders first baseman, Eric Gutierrez, on the top of the head like one of those "Hey, son, what do you think you're doing" moves...
From Luke Zimmerman's Vine
And, then, it carried down 90 feet and led to three ejections...
Gutierrez, DiMare, and after home plate- Tech assistant J-Bob Thomas. Gutierrez is the Big 12 Conference home run leader. So, advantage goes to Miami on man power used.
Tech won 3-0 and advance to the regional final...
Here's the long version
To go with that, Texas A&M beat rice in 10 innings 9-8 on a game-winning wild pitch...

Big Papi Got No Respect For David Price No More
((HT:MLB.com/CSNNE))
Tempers flared multiple times last night at Fenway as the Tampa bay Rays went after Boston.
And for David Price it seemed like last night was his opportunity to get back at David Ortiz after his playoff homer that rubbed Price the wrong way.
All the brushback and blowback is below
Papi talked after the game and called Price out...
It was quite colorful

Arkansas-Little Rock And Central Arkansas Rumble In Baseball
((HT: The Echo))
Brother Wilkie can speak to this better than the rest of us, but our history of knowing rivalries would put UALR and UCA in it without fail. You're talking D1 versus D2, big versus little, and all the regional complexes that go along with it all.
In the 10th inning of the Trojans-Bears game last night, Arkansas-Little Rock coach Scott Norwood and Central Arkansas coach Allen Gum got into a disagreement and it escalated from there.
Here's the start of it...
According to Dustin Poynter's article in the UCA newspaper, umpires stopped the game for approximately 20 minutes before play resumed. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported as UCA won 5-4 in 11 innings.
The only game fallout were the ejections of Norwood and UALR sophomore pitcher Chad Bradford.
More as we know more...

One Of The Worst Brawls You'll Ever See...
((HT: Baseball America))
Take you to Cuban baseball for this one...
First, just watch... pretty wild...
Now, the background...
Villa Clara pitcher Freddy Alvarez gives up a homer and then hits two batters afterwards. After the second batter got buzzed, a player came in from the dugout with the bat and started swinging...
You saw the self-defense. Now, the HQ just wonders how much of a suspension that Matanzas player Demis Valdes will get...
Even with a swing and a miss...

Carlos Zambrano Starts Brawl In Venezuela
Former major league pitcher Carlos Zambrano is apologizing for starting a brawl during Venezuela's winter league series final.
In Game 3 of the finals, this happened when the opposing pitcher threw at one of Zambrano's teammates...
His apology was carried Monday by El Nacional newspaper, and translated from the article said in part:
"I got a hit, fell, during the brawl. The most disadvantaged was I by the stupidity of wanting to take justice into my hands, when the Bible says that justice is God's. But I am human, I am not perfect,"said del Toro, after becoming the center of attraction of the brawl that sailors and Caribs, staged at the top of the sixth inning of the third game of the final.
"What happens on the pitch stays there, said Zambrano."This will not end today or tomorrow. If you stick a pitch in the major leagues, many people will go to the mound and you will want to arrange things in a very unprofessional way."
"It was an embarrassing moment. Last night when I went to the dugout I didn't have to get out more so. It gave me grief with God and the fans. It was a moment of impulse".
The LVBP (Venezuelan Pro Baseball League) was looking at tape to determine any kind of discipline- that could even keep Zambrano from pitching in a 5th game if the series goes that far...

Brian McCann: Enforcer For The Love Of The Game
((HT: FS Brewers/MLB))
Carlos Gomez is not, apparently, Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez when it comes to admiring his handiwork...
But Braves catcher Brian McCann will be more than happy to tell you when you break the code...
Gomez, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman and Gerald Laird were ejected. The umpires said that the Gomez run counted even though he had never touched home plate, invoking Role 7.06(a), which says an "obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base he had last legally touched before the obstruction."
Gomez and Maholm have a history... On June 23 at Miller Park, a Maholm fastball hit Gomez in the left knee. Gomez thought Maholm had intentionally struck him.
When Gomez rounded third base, he pointed at his knee while yelling at Maholm... connecting the two incidents...
At least, in theory...

Chris Johnson Doesn't Appreciate Those Who Watch Homeruns
((HT: MLB/FSFlorida))
This was one of those incidents that had a lot of things wrong with it...
And, mostly, it was because of how entirely young the Miami Marlins are...
It all starts with a home run... by a pitcher...
Here's what went down...
So, did Fernandez cause the furor by staring...? Yes...
Was it immature...? Yes...
Was McCann in the right by trying to explain etiquette to Fernandez...? Yes...
Do young kids in a group lend itself to immaturity...? And, when confronted by veterans does something like this escalate...? Yes.
Fernandez wasn't a fan of what Evan Gattis did when he homered earlier, so he may have retaliated. But Fernandez said McCann told him "You can't do that Buddy. He talked to me like a friend, a father."
Which may have put an end to the whole thing- until the next time Fernandez pitches against the Braves...

DEVELOPING: Dempster Gets 5 Games
((HT: ESPN/MLB))
For This...???
What say you, faithful reader...???
Is it a worthy punishment...???
He was fined an undisclosed amount for "intentionally throwing at and hitting Alex Rodriguez."
"I was just trying to pitch inside," he said after the game in defense...

Ryan Dempster, New Red Sox Folk Hero...Until That "Home Run"Thing...
((HT: MLB on ESPN/youtube))
With the chants of "Go Home, Cheater!" ringing through the Fens, Ryan Dempster decided to make his point on the whole Alex Rodriguez saga...
By doing the following in A-Rod's first at bat this evening against the Red Sox...
Joe Girardi's rant-a-palooza didn't help as he got tossed...
Tony Pena took over in the dugout... at least through what the HQ could see on the telly...
The HQ also anticipates another late-inning round of retribution by the Yanks toward any Red Sox batter in the box...
So, then what does A-Rod do...???
Take Dempster deep later in the game...
More when we know more...

An International Incident In The WBC
And, no, the HQ isn't talking boxing...
Canada and Mexico were playing in the created-event World Baseball Classic...
And part of the problem with the tie-breaker system in the WBC is runs scored...
So, as a result, there's the tendency (a very un-baseball-unwritten rule kind of thing) to do things that you normally wouldn't do- like bunt in blowout situations...
Which is what Canada did and Mexico took exception...

Now, That's A Season Opener... Some Basebrawl For Your Weekend...
((HT: KCRA-TV, Sacramento))
Sacramento State and UC-Riverside were in the state capitol for the season opener for the home team...
And, what's a season opener without some swinging...
FOSG Gulstan Dart takes the lead...
Sacramento State second baseman Andrew Ayers, the reigning WAC Player of the Year, and two UC Riverside players (Eddie Young and Drake Zarate) will be suspended for four games each for what went down...
Them's the rules by the folks in Indianapolis...

Adults Brawl While Kids Play Little League Tournament
((HT: WTVM-TV Columbus))
Not that this is a surprise or anything these days...
BUT...
This is the time of year where little leaguers try to work their way to Williamsport and the corresponding championship held for young'uns...
Leave it to parents to get bent out of shape in a blowout...
FOSG Dave Platta has the highlights... and lowlights...
WTVM.com-Columbus, GA News Weather
Here's a longer version of the brawl, thanks to the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer
It seems one parent was playing music too loudly in celebration of the win and the fight broke out...
Charles Davidson and Iram King were ordered to appear in Columbus Recorder’s Court for an August 16th hearing.
“It’s about the most disgusting thing I have ever seen in Little League in all the years I’ve been doing it,” Bernard Ashley, a Little League administrator, told the Ledger-Enquirer.
May be the case, but this won't be the last time it happens...
