The TCU vs. Iowa State game ended fairly quickly. If a 17-3 halftime lead wasn't enough, dropping a 31-spot in the 3rd quarter took care of it.
The Horned Frogs won a share of the Big 12 title Saturday afternoon, trouncing Iowa State 55-3. And while the Frogs were 3rd in the rigged for ESPN playoff poll going into the game, there is no assurance the win will get them a playoff berth.
Trevone Boykin threw for 460 yards and 4 TD's as TCU rolled up 722 yards of offense on a sunny afternoon in Fort Worth.
TCU's status as we said is uncertain due to the fact they are tied with Baylor for the conference lead. Baylor plays Kansas State Saturday night. A Bear win guarantees a tie, a Baylor loss gives TCU the conference and likely playoff bid.
There has been much discussion should Baylor and TCU finish tied as to whom should get a shot at the playoff. The Bears got a 61-58 win over the Frogs early in the season and many believe that will be enough to give them the nod.
We say wait and see what happens because we would not guarantee a Baylor win over a tough Kansas State game.
Here's your TCU highlights from ESPN.com:

Rare Big 12 Win For Kansas, Fans Tear Down The Goal Posts
Times have been lean for Kansas Football.Last year the Jayhawks won three games. One the year before that.
Turner Gill and Charlie Weis have tried and failed to bring a winner to Lawrence.
Ironically the last head coach to have success at K-U, Mark Mangino was on the opposite sideline as offensive coordinator at Iowa State.
Clint Bowen is getting his shot as head coach after Weis was let go in September and Saturday against Iowa State Bowen got his first win as the Jayhawks head coach as Kansas defeated Iowa State 34-14.
The long suffering fans of Kansas were so giddy that tearing down the goal posts after beating Iowa State was appropriate.
All the spoils of victory were enjoyed by Kansas, The goalposts went down and Bowen received the obligatory Gatorade shower.I've always seen those." Bowen said. "They're a lot colder than you think. The old ice punch challenge came through there. Honestly about the greatest feeling of my life as this coaching thing goes."
“This is a bad loss." Iowa State head coach Paul Rhodes said.
It was a convincing win by the Jayhawks but their performance in the last three games of their schedule might impress the powers that be at Kansas to offer Bowen the job full time.
Those last three games are at home against red hot TCU next week. Then a road trip to a disappointing Oklahoma Sooner team before ending the season hosting Kansas State in the Sunflower Showdown.
A win in one of those games might give Bowen the gig for good.
“I would love nothing more than for him to be the guy full time" Kansas quarterback Michael Cummings said. . "Him as a coach, he is enthusiastic, he’s a former player so he knows what we go through day-in and day-out. I think he is a great leader.”
"When we look at Coach Bowen we see KU all over him, so everybody goes out in practice and in the game and play our hardest for that man.” Kansas WR/RB Tony Pierson said.
Cmon Kansas, are you serious? You beat a 2 win team and you tore down your goalposts? Straight weak!!!

Iowa State AD Fined For Postgame Rant On Officials
((HT: CyclonesTV))
Iowa State was hanging with Oklahoma State for a while at T.Boone Pickens Stadium over the weekend, but in the second half it was all Cowboys in the win, 37-20.
One play in particular drew the ire of AD Jamie Pollard at the end of the first half...
(Which you can see in the highlights below)
After the game Pollard let the assembled media know about it after the fact- and he thinks his Cyclones get screwed all the time
As a result of his rant, Pollard got fined $25,000 by the conference and they were less than pleased:
“Mr. Pollard’s public statements called into question the integrity and competence of game officials and the Conference’s officiating program,” stated Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “To insinuate that games are called unfairly to negatively impact a program is irresponsible and completely baseless. Accordingly, the seriousness of this violation warrants a public reprimand and a financial penalty. We take pride in our officiating programs and will continue to strive for the highest possible standards and the fairest competition.”

OSG CFB: Just How Much Is Kirk Ferentz's Buyout These Days...??? Still Un-Buyoutable...
((HT: Iowa State Daily Online))
Iowa State beat Iowa today in the annual CyHawk affair on a last-second field goal by Cole Netten with two seconds left in regulation.
Netten missed his first attempt, but Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz had called timeout to try and ice him.
Didn't work and now the Cyclones are 1-2 after their embarassing loss to North Dakota State and the Hawkeyes (2-1) have now lost three of the last four in the series.
Here's Paul Rhoads talking about his kicker...
And, now, we address the larger question. Frankly, it's one of the larger questions in the state after a day like today.
It is commonly known that Ferentz has the worst contract for a state employee in the history of contracts for state employees short of Huey Long.
And, for that, he can thank AD Gary Barta for base salaries, longevity bonuses, and anything else resembling supplemental payments that Barta threw at him when the contract was signed and extended.
Patrick Vint over at Bleacher Report did a tremendously face-slapping awareness piece IN 2012 on the sheer madness of the contract and why a buyout will NEVER HAPPEN UNTIL THE CONTRACT IS OVER... and, then, it just won't be renewed.
In the year 2020... let that sink in for a moment...
His contract is SO BAD it cannot be bought out, so a program is stuck with him unless someone befriends Warren Buffet or T. Boone Pickensian-type folks over the next five years or so.
If we extrapolate Vint's base number for buying out in 2012 dollars using his "75-percent of his base salary" figure, and we fire Kirk Ferentz the second this story is published, we're looking at a minimum of 52 payments of $219,742 or $11,426,584...
And that says nothing of any kind of hidden settlements or other hidden paragraphs in the Ferentz-ian contract.
It's almost the Peter Principle of contracts and there's nothing the school or the state can do about it.
Barta is more than happy, apparently, to fire one of the more nationally recognized field hockey coaches in the country when he let Tracey Griesbaum go with three weeks before the 2014 season was going to start a month ago- allegedly when five players went to Barta and claimed that Griesbaum called a player "fat."
Barta fired Griesbaum without cause and went straight to the buyout portion of the contract for that sport- and, probably, ruined it on campus.
A particular paragraph late in the Black Heart piece by Vint speaks volumes about where Barta's head is in the Iowa Athletic Program:
"A football workout actually put nine players in the hospital not long ago, yet not one person was fired or even reprimanded; the strength coach responsible for the workout got a 'Coach of the Year' award from the program two months later. And if yelling at players is grounds for dismissal, then Gary Barta has obviously not watched the basketball coach he hired four years ago."
So, if anyone is looking for any kind of success in Iowa City- good luck with that until Barta and Ferentz are gone...
SIX YEARS FROM NOW!!!

Cole Netten's Boot Brings The Cy-Hawk Trophy Back To Iowa State 20-17 Over Iowa
Iowans from Des Moines to Davenport to Sioux City focused on the in - state battle between Iowa and Iowa State this Saturday.Since 1977 the winner possess the Cy-Hawk Trophy to go along with in-state bragging rights.
Iowa State has only possessed the Cy-Hawk Trophy 13 times since 1977 but recent history has been swaying the Cyclones way.
Today at Kinnick Stadium the game went to the final seconds.
Iowa State kicker Cole Netten nailed a 42 yard field goal with two seconds left to give the Cyclones at 20-17 win over the Iowa Hawkeyes and for the third time in 4 years the Cy-Hawk Trophy will be housed in Ames.
"Being an Iowa State fan your whole life, this is something that it doesn't feel real," Netten said. "Like a dream is even pushing it."
"Obviously it was a tough loss for our football team." Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said.
The blame may be put on Ferentz who called time out earlier to freeze Netten who missed the field goal attempt. It didn't count.
"I mean, there's not a lot of it's a 50/50 shot, you either call a timeout or you don't." Ferentz said. "We called a timeout. We had one left and that's the reason I called it."
Iowa State quarterback Sam Richardson led the Cyclones completing 25 of 37 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns.
Today the hawkeyes wear black to mourn their loss to the Cyclones! IOWA STATE BEATS THE HAWKS 20-17!!

This Didn't Go Over Well: Iowa Sportscaster Slams NDSU Before Iowa State Game
((HT: WHO-TV/96.5TheFox))
If anyone understands the value of the face and heel relationship, it's the HQ...
So, Week 1 is always reserved for the paycheck games mostly... and a lot of folks in the midwest stared at North Dakota State visiting Iowa State as one of those games that was supposed to be chance for the Clones to get the duke. NDSU lost their head coach Craig Bohl to Division I- even as one of the powerhouse schools in I-AA they still had a lot of losses to graduation.
And this came across the airwaves in Des Moines, courtesy of Andy Fales and WHO-TV
Fales wasn't a fan of this game being played period.
A lot of good that did as NDSU pounded Iowa State by 20.
The HQ gives Fales credit for fanning the flames and waving the flag for the home team- even if he was way off...

Harris got tossed, but Bob Huggins should expect a phone call from the Big 12 office for this...
Earlier in the game, ISU's Dustin Hogue was assessed a flagrant 1 for his front kick to a West Virginia player, so it does look like things got a lot out of hand...

Paul Rhoads Is Pissed. Goes Off On Big 12 Officials
[HT: cyclones.com]
Paul Rhodes might be sending a check to the Big 12 Conference offices.
Last night Rhodes Iowa State Cyclones lost a heart breaker at home to Texas 31-30.
Texas quarterback Case McCoy lead the Longhorns on a 75 yard game winning drive with under three minutes but it wasn't without controversy.
Two pass interference penalties and two near fumbles on that drive doomed the Cyclones and led to this tirade by the Iowa State head coach.

But he won't because there wasn't any kind of "targeting" attached to it...

School officials are cool with Pollard knowing that he was a father acting like a father- and fathers act that way sometimes...

The Wackiest Top 25 Day Of The Year...Alabama, Texas A&M, Syracuse, Louisville, Texas, and Stanford
Let's just start at the top...
A lot of people, the HQ included, thought that after Alabama took care of LSU that the game that would scare them was behind them...
Instead, the game after LSU was the game that bit them...
Johnny Manziel reinforced his trophy aspirations- even as a freshman- with the Texas A&M Aggies upset of Alabama in Tuscaloosa...
Nick Saban was, obviously, less than pleased...
((HT: WIAT-TV Birmingham))
Louisville head coach Charlie Strong wondered aloud why his team, while undefeated, wasn't ranked higher than ninth in the Bee-Cee-Ess poll. Everyone told Strong that he hadn't really played anybody...
So, then, what happens when Louisville plays Syracuse in the Orange Dome on senior day...??? Ryan Nassib throws for 246 yards, the Orange puts the pedal down early and beats the Cardinals 45-26...
It wasn't that close...
((HT: WSYR-TV Syracuse))
The Texas Longhorns honored Darrell Royal by running out of the wishbone- which was a nice tribute... but they did it with a twist...
The Longhorns won over Iowa State 33-7 to improve to 8-2...
((HT: KXAN-TV Austin))
And, until the Florida- Louisiana Lafayette game shows up somewhere, the HQ will finish with the Oregon State-Stanford highlights... The only turnover Oregon State had on the day would turn costly as the Cardinal held on at home 27-23... ((HT: KVAL-TV))

Cyclones End Nations Longest Winning Streak, Own State Of Texas Too.
The Iowa State Cyclones do not dread going to Texas, they love it. Success is guaranteed the last three years.
In 2010 the Cyclones defeated the 22nf ranked Texas 28-21 and last season Iowa State beat down then #19 Texas Tech in Lubbock 41-7.
The Cyclone magic in the Lone Star State remained as Iowa State went to Ft. Worth and ended TCU’s nations best 12 game winning streak with a 37-23.
Here’s the highlights. (Thanks CyclonesTV)
Iowa State is now 4-1 for the first time in 10 years.

No Starting QB, No Win For TCU
((HT: WHO-TV Des Moines))
Casey Paschall was on the bench for his DUI that he punched earlier this week...
And, say what you want, it probably contributed greatly to the Iowa State Cyclones knocking off a top-25 opponent on the road for the third season in a row. This time it was a 37-23 win at Amon Carter Stadium in the Metroplex. The college version of "longest winning streak" also died at 12 games in a row.
The win over the Horned Frogs was also only the third in 33 attempts on the road for ISU against a top-25 team dating back to 1996.
Here's the highlights...
"You can't give up big plays on defense and you can't turn the ball over on offense," TCU head coach Gary Patterson said. "Real simple."
Five turnovers will do that for you...
And Patterson is set to meet with the chancellor of TCU next week to discuss Paschall's future on campus- if he even has one. Remember, Paschall admitted that eight months ago he smoked some marijuana and failed a team-issued drug test.
Iowa State is 4-1 and they get Kansas State in Ames next week...

TWTW: The Ones Where We Don't Know What To Think- Iowa State, South Florida, Rice
((HT: WHO-TV Des Moines))
The Cy-Hawk game, itself, was astronomically painful- a 9-6 final...

So goes that idea: Okie State beaten by Iowa State
In a lot of ways, the beauty of college football is just when you think things are going in one direction, they change direction.
Most everyone, us included thought it was a foregone conclusion that Oklahoma State would be undefeated heading into Bedlam against Oklahoma.
Not now.
That's because Iowa State took advantage of 5 Cowboy turnovers and a few lucky breaks to beat Oklahoma State 37-31 in 2 overtimes.
SI.com gives us Highlights: (Thanks sportsillustrated):
The loss moves the Cowboys to 10-1 overall and will knock them off their #2 ranking and basically eliminate them from a potential BCS Championship game.
For Iowa State it was their first win over a Top 5 team....ever. And the win makes them Bowl Eligible.
Here is Cyclone coach Paul Rhodes speaking to his players after the game: (Thanks Cyclones.com):
What this does is essentially set-up a LSU/Alabama rematch in the BCS title game....
Unless, college football does what it often does, and provide us with another couple of upsets before seasons end. And while Alabama is not likely to lose this week to Georgia Southern, LSU still has to play Ole Miss and Arkansas before their season ends.
To quote the great Yogi Berra--"It ain't over, til it's over".

Cyclone Shocker, Iowa State Upsets Oklahoma State
It's the biggest win in Iowa State history. The Cyclones had never defeated a team ranked in the top 5 until Friday night.
Backup running back Jeff Woody ran into the end zone from four yards out in the second overtime to seal the Cyclone win 37-31.
Here are the highlights. (Thanks Iowa State Video Services)
Not only was this a monumental win for Iowa State it was also the Cyclones sixth win. A heck of a way to be bowl eligible. Here's Iowa State head coach Paul Rhodes' post game locker room address to the team.

Paul Rhodes' post game press conference.
Friday was a surreal day in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The day began with the tragic deaths of Cowgirl head basketball coach Kirk Budke and assistant coach Miranda Serna in a plane crash in Perry County, Arkansas. The Oklahoma State football played their game against Iowa State but couldn't overcome a determined Cyclone team.
"For me to say it wasn't a strange day would be .... leading everyone astray," Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy was quoted in the Tulsa World. "This team has handled a lot of different situations, but we just didn't play well."

Losing their 3rd straight game at home, Tech falls to 5-3 overall and 2-3 in the Big 12/10/9/10. This loss keeps the Red Raiders from becoming bowl eligible... so far...
But the HQ figures there's a TicketCity Bowl bid in their future... or some other Texas-based bowl game before the holidays...

OSU Denies Any Big 12/10/9 Shenanigans
((HT: KWTX-TV Waco, Newsok.com))
Mike Sherman's Open Mike blog at Newsok.com has the newest angle in all of this eventual Texas A&M moving to the Ess-E-Cee despite protestations of a school (probably Baylor) and possibly the addition of other schools in some nebulous lawsuit that has no bearing and wouldn't hold up in any court of law...
Oklahoma State's Gary Schutt released the following statement... since they played Arizona and he knew everyone was going to ask...
"Speculative reports using unnamed sources implying Oklahoma State University would join others in a lawsuit against the SEC and Texas A&M were incorrect."
Here's team coverage on Baylor's blocking of the whole deal- it's all about looking out for number one, yo...
And any news of a so-called "Group of 6" or "Gang of 6"- Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, K-State, Missouri, and Texas Tech- is news to OU- according to Berry Tramel... since OU is supposedly the lynchpin of any movement that gets Baylor's "okay" after analysis including Texas A&M...
Got all that...???
Jenni Carlson talks to Travis Haney about Oklahoma's angle in all this...
And, oh by the way, Iowa State is retaining legal counsel on the off chance they think they'll need it...
