That Was A Close One For #1 Florida State, Survive Over Against Oklahoma State 37-31

The opening game in college football is always a crap shoot.  No pre-season, no scrimmages against another team.  You start in the heat of battle.

Florida State was invincible last year on their way to a BCS national championship but 2014 is another story.

An inspired Oklahoma State team gave the Seminoles all they could handle but FSU prevailed 37-31.

Florida State is still a work in progress and that's not necessarily a bad thing when you can overcome adversity.

"We understand how to win games, and we're doing a good job" Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher said. ." I'm proud of them for doing that."

"Oklahoma State was outstanding out there." Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston said. "You know, they played hard. They never gave up. They never gave up."

“This team won’t back down from anybody,”  Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy said.

And the Pokes didn't back down on the Seminoles.

Oklahoma State's J.W. Walsh was outstanding throwing for 203 yards and a touchdown and leading the Cowboys is rushing with 51 yards.

Most importantly Oklahoma State didn't fold in the spotlight on national TV after spotting Florida State with 17 unanswered points early in the game.

“We feel good about where we’re at,” Walsh said. “We’re upset about the loss, but going into film tomorrow, there’s going to be a lot of good things to build on.”

"I thought they (Oklahoma State)  did a heck of a job." Fisher said. " I told you Mike has a got a good football team, and he's a heck of a football coach."

Jameis Winston finished the game completing 25 of 40 passes for 370 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.  They weren't the gaudy numbers Winston put up in his season opener last year at Pittsburgh but his 28 yard touchdown run late in the third quarter will be stored in the memory banks.

It was also the longest run in Winston's career.

With the college football playoff a reality this is the first example of survive and advance in college football.

Oklahoma State Bad News For The #3 Baylor Bears, Cowboys win 49-17

Lets see how many college football fans drop off the Baylor Bears bandwagon now.

Oklahoma State's 49-17 win over #3 Baylor have killed Baylor's chances to win a BCS National Champion.

(Thanks Newsok.com)

Cowboy quarterback Clint Chelf assured it would be a long night in Stillwater for the Bears.  Chelf threw for a career high 370 yards and three touchdowns and even rushed for a touchdown too.

“I'm happy with the groove he's in." Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy was quoted in Daily Oklahoman. "We just want to let him keep going.”

The Cowboy defense held the potent Bear offense to just 453 yards of total offense.  We say just 453 yards because Baylor's offense averaged 684.4 yards per game.

“Oklahoma State played extremely well and had a lot of energy and made plays when they needed them,” Baylor head coach Art Briles said. “We did things you can’t do at home or on the road, and you dang sure can’t do them against a good team on the road. They’re a good football team, and that’s why you had the outcome that happened tonight.”

“This loss won’t define our team,” Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty said.

Petty had career highs in had career highs in passing attempts (48) and completions (28) for 359 yards and two touchdowns but is wasn't enough.

“This is a great team, a special team."  Petty said. "But us not finishing drives wasn’t fair to our defense, and that’s on my shoulders. I have the ball on every play, and I have to execute.”

Baylor has TCU at Ft. Worth next week before closing the season at home against Texas.Oklahoma State has a week off before taking on Oklahoma December 7th in another edition of the Bedlam game.

Oke State Addresses Upcoming SI Article

((HT: Newsok.com))

Or, at least, they kinda did...

Head football coach Mike Gundy didn't say anything at his Monday press conference... he just read...
((HT: Oklahoma State Athletics))

But AD Mike Holder did...

The Sports Illustrated article alleges five fronts:

There was an alleged pay-for-play set up by an ex-coach as well as sham jobs...
Widespread academic misconduct...
Selective enforcement of the university drug policy
That the Orange Pride, the hostess staff engaged in sexual activity with recruits
Athletes who were of no use to the program any more were "cast aside..."

The next few days in Stillwater will be interesting...

Bedlam Was Exactly That...

((HT: newsok.com))

Oklahoma had three receivers go over 100 yards receiving and Landry Jones (in all his reported gimpyness) threw for 500 yards...

The Sooners needed all of those yards in a 51-48 overtime win...

Damon Fontenot was there and bundled up...

Oklahoma’s offense totalled 618 total yards and 44 first downs — second-most in NCAA history for a game.

Oklahoma can get the Big 12/10 championship, but they need a win next Saturday at TCU and Kansas State has to lose at home to Texas.

If both teams win, they’ll share the Big 12 title. But Kansas State will earn the Fiesta Bowl berth because of their 24-19 win at Oklahoma on September 22nd.

Did The Big 12 Apologize To Mike Gundy Or Not...???

((HT: Newsok.com))

According to Gina Mizell, the Big 12 Conference has apologized to Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy over the botched call at the end of the 41-36 loss to Texas Saturday.

But the 12/10 is saying that they have done no such thing...

The head of the 12/10's officials, Walt Anderson, “apologized profusely” and admitted to Gundy that Joe Bergeron fumbled before crossing the goal line and the game-winning touchdown should not have counted.

From Mizell:

The source said Anderson told Gundy the call was botched by head linesman Brad Edwards, who signaled touchdown too soon without proper view of the ball, which was fumbled before it broke the plane of the end zone. Edwards was originally positioned on the goal line on the UT sideline, then sprinted toward the pile and put his arms in the air. A second source added umpire Scott Teifer, who was watching the play from the end zone, also did not communicate properly with Edwards by telling him the ball was on the ground before it crossed the goal line.

But... and this is a big "but..."

The conference said, on its official Twitter feed, that no such apology has happened...

Here's the play in question:

And here's the response from the 12/10:

Reports that the Big 12 acknowledged a blown call and issued an apology to Oklahoma State are inaccurate

Okie State wins: Let the arguments begin

It's already started.

And it is unfortunate, because if big-time college football was like any other sport, it would get settled "On-The-Field".

Oklahoma State made their statement for playing in the BCS Championship Game (it's not a "true" national championship) by pounding their arch-rivals Oklahoma 44-10.

The Cowboys scored at will against the injury ravaged Sooners and made the best statement they could to be ranked #2.

But will it be enough?

We'll never "Truly" know because most writers and experts have already proclaimed Alabama #2 and worthy of a BCS title rematch vs. LSU.

And they'll most likely get it.

Without getting into details of the Cowboys convincing win, most now just want to debate the merits of who will be #2. (sounds like a potty joke--doesn't it?) Early this past week Okie State coach Mike Gundy said "Alabama deserves to be #2". He's now saying "What would you rather see? A 9-6 game or a 39-36 game?".

Great, except Gundy is assuming he could get his team 36 points vs. LSU.

Not likely to happen.

As much as we are based in SEC territory and you can make a pretty good argument that Alabama should be #2, we'd like to see Okie State get the opportunity. We've seen Alabama vs. LSU and while ungodly physical, by and large, it was ugly football.

And after seeing LSU in person last night. We've no reason to believe that the follow up game would be any prettier. LSU's offense is not good. Neither is Alabama's. But...it's defense that makes the difference.

This is the argument and a prime example of why the BCS is inanely stupid. It is incredibly biased and tilted. The "Computer" ratings they use are a secret that they refuse to share. But we are expected to buy them as total and complete fact.

Let's hope that whomever gets passed up here makes a strong enough argument to make the BCS go away. It exists only to benefit the people making a profit off of it. The Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC, ACC and Big East Commissioners and AD's.

Okay, I'll stop ranting on the idiocy and congratulate Oklahoma State for winning. It's unfortunate that the loss to Iowa State will probably cost them a shot at the BCS (not national) title.

Cyclone Shocker, Iowa State Upsets Oklahoma State

It's the biggest win in Iowa State history. The Cyclones had never defeated a team ranked in the top 5 until Friday night.

Backup running back Jeff Woody ran into the end zone from four yards out in the second overtime to seal the Cyclone win 37-31.

Here are the highlights. (Thanks Iowa State Video Services)

Not only was this a monumental win for Iowa State it was also the Cyclones sixth win. A heck of a way to be bowl eligible. Here's Iowa State head coach Paul Rhodes' post game locker room address to the team.

Paul Rhodes' post game press conference.

Friday was a surreal day in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The day began with the tragic deaths of Cowgirl head basketball coach Kirk Budke and assistant coach Miranda Serna in a plane crash in Perry County, Arkansas. The Oklahoma State football played their game against Iowa State but couldn't overcome a determined Cyclone team.

"For me to say it wasn't a strange day would be .... leading everyone astray," Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy was quoted in the Tulsa World. "This team has handled a lot of different situations, but we just didn't play well."
