Let's just say Ryan Sturdivan of Woodland High School in Washington had himself a good night Tuesday.
Sturdivan scored 24 points to lead Woodland to a win over Kelso High. But it's how he got 4 of those points is what makes it a big deal.
Sturdivan ended the first half with a running heave from half court that went in at the buzzer.
And at the end of the game, with his team tied at 47, he did it again, taking the inbounds pass and throwing up a long two handed heave from just before the half court line.
Boom! It's in, game over and Woodland celebrates a buzzer beating win 49-47....

Texas Moves to Close Deion Sanders Private High School
((ht: myfoxdfw.com))
So...when does a state move to revoke the charter of a high school? Well, probably when that school repeatedly has financial management issues and doesn't comply with the state's rules and code of education.
That's the fate that is facing former NFL All Star Deion Sanders's "Prime Prep" school which has locations in Dallas and Fort Worth and has apparently featured several "Star" athletes, who's eligibility has now become in question. Sanders is a co-founder of the school. And Sanders was quick to respond to the allegations.
Read the Tweets:
This is not the school's 1st brush with the state, in 2012, there were allegations of lax educational standards, power struggles with the management and issues with the school lunch programs.
This time, the allegations, well, they are similar to the 2012 allegations. The school for their part says they plan to appeal.
Read more from Fox4 TV in Dallas RIGHT HERE
Star basketball player Emmanuel Mulday walked away from a scholarship offer to SMU to play hoops overseas professionally amidst multiple reports he was being investigated by the NCAA.
This story is a "Prime" example of what is happening in amateur sports. Schools are being created for the express purpose of churning out star athletes. The education is becoming secondary. Fast.
We applaud the state of Texas for taking a stand and telling Prime Prep if they want to be considered a legitimate educational institute, it's time they start acting like one.

H.S Hoopster With Down Syndrome Drops Four 3-Pointers in Game
((ht: cbssports.com))
Talk about having a night...
Kevin Grow, the team manager for Bensalem High School in Pennsylvania got to suit up for Bensalem's game Saturday night on Senior Night and to quote Dan Patrick, Grow was "En fuego".
Grow, a senior, has Down's Syndrome and has been the squad's manager for all four years. He got into the game late, with about 2 minutes to go and Bensalem well ahead. Grow proceeded to get a layup shortly after entering the game.
That's when he channeled his inner Larry Bird. A 3 from the top of the key. Next time down, another three a little left of the 1st one. He finished with his fourth 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Grow ended up with 14 points and his team won the game 64-40

We just wanted to share a really well done story by a couple of friends of the OSG, producer/photographer Mark Slaughter and local Cincinnati legend John Popovich of WCPO-TV in Cincinnati, OH ((note--worked there while on assignment in Cincy from 2009-2011.))
Check out the story of "Dez" Scruggs, a forward for Hughes Center High School in the Cincinnati area.

Back To Back Buzzer Beaters By An Arkansas High School Hoop Rising Star
His name is Malik Monk from Bentonville High School in Bentonville, Arkansas. Monk is a 15 year old sophomore that is not only one of the top talents sought after by major colleges but is building a reputation of being clutch.
This week Monk shot down a pair of Bulldog teams, Springdale High School on Tuesday night and Fayetteville High School Friday night.
Thanks Hoopmixtape.com
"These are going to kill me at a young age." Bentonville head coach Jason McMahan told NWA Online. “I’m just glad we ended up on the right side of them, though.”

"I made my team put it all on me." Monk said to NWA Online. “They isolated me, and coach told me to take the last shot. So I did. I just took a little stutter step to get them off -balance.
“If I missed, overtime was good. So that’s what I did.”
What's impressive about both buzzer beaters by Monk is that he was double teamed and still had the poise and the stroke to hit both shots.
Florida and Kansas are on his list according to the four letter (ESPN).
Those in his home state (and this writer as well) are close to begging Monk to suit up down the highway for the Razorbacks in a few years.

This Is Really Cool: Special Needs Student Hits Buzzer Beater On Boston's Famed Parquet Floor
Brendan Durkin is the team manager for the Newton (Mass.) North boys basketball team. Brendan is a special needs student with Downs Syndrome and he received some playing time against rival Newton South in the Good Sports Invitational at the TD Garden in Boston.
Durkin had a chance to beat the buzzer, and did.

An 80 Foot Beater--To Tie The Game
((ht: sportingnews.com))
Uh…yeah, we know, buzzer beaters are buzzer beaters and usually win games.
Well, not this one, but it sure looks and sound pretty damn impressive.
Check out this video of Temidayo Yussef of St. Joseph Notre Dame High in Oakland, California. Yussuf grabs a missed free throw and the clock ticks down heaves the ball in the general direction of the basket.
And yes, it goes in.
However the shot only tied the game with El Cerrito High at 61. El Cerrito was able to recover from that one and beat Yussef and St. Joseph's teammates 71-64.

OSG High: A Rim Bending Dunk In New York State
[HT: Fox Sports Live]
Noah Arciero doesn't know his own strength. Arciero has a break away dunk, the key word is "break"
That's right, he broke the rim.
Those of us at the OSG HQ haven't seen a rim break like that.
Nice job Noah.
The dunk happened 91 seconds into his team’s road game against Ballston Spa with Saratoga leading 6-3, and right now (rim permitting) the game has been rescheduled for Thursday night at Ballston Spa...

((ht: bleacherreport.com))
Whoa!
Check out what happens when Kyle Gouveia a senior at Calaveras High School in San Andreas, California does to a rim and backboard when he suddenly finds himself with an unobstructed path to the basket.

OSG High: You Cannot Do What Marvey'o Otey Did...
Watch for yourself...
((HT: Juan Lopez))
William Byrd (VA) High's Marvey'o Otey did that in a 76-69 loss to Cave Spring High School...
“When we played last week it was the first varsity game for most of our team,” Cave Spring head coach Billy Hicks told the Roanoke Star's Bill Turner. “We started finding ourselves in the second half at Radford last Friday night. Everyone gained confidence.”
Otey finished with 30 in the loss...

Half Court Buzzer Beater In High School Basketball
This one occurred in an event known as the Great Western Shootout in Orem, Utah.
TJ Haws of Lone Peak HS, and committed to BYU, launched a game winner from half court to defeat Bishop O'Connell (VA) HS 49-46.
(Thanks KSL Sports)
"I knew I had missed a few shots, but I tried to stay confident and shot with confidence and that's why it went through," Haws said. "I stepped up when I needed to."

Josh Ruggles Shoots 3's Better Than You
((ht: cbssports.com))
You may not have ever heard of Josh Ruggles, but he's got quite the interesting video.
The high school junior set what's believed to be a world record by dropping 135 three point shots in five minutes.
The whole thing was documented on YouTube, though it wasn't shot very well:
Ruggles broke the previous record set back in May by WNBA guard Laurie Koehn who hit 132.
We posted that story back on May 9th, you can see it RIGHT HERE

Bad Luck: Oklahoma HS Kid Scores Game Winner For Opponent (now with Video)
Okay, so the title may or may not make sense, but it's a very unfortunate story that the kid feels horrible about.Thursday night, Millwood High School in Oklahoma got a state playoff win over Hugo High when Hugo's Trey Johnson inexplicably drove for a layup at Millwood's basket with 2 seconds left in the game. And yes, Millwood got credit for the hoop, which gave them the 38-37 win.
Unfortunately, all Johnson had needed to do was dribble out the last 2-seconds of the game. He didn't. And according to those in attendance, after it happened, you could have heard a pin drop in the arena.
Read the story from NewsOK.com RIGHT HERE
We really feel sorry for the kid and realize this is a moment he'll never live down and never be able to take back.
Thankfully for him, as of right now, there isn't any actual video of what happened. And yes, while you might consider it cruel, we did and are still looking.
Update: The video has been found: Sorry Trey, it's the only way to effectively tell the story.

OSG High: Memphis-Ridgeway In A Heap Of Trouble
((HT: WMC-TV))
So, how does an 18-year-old with a GED get back into high school while married to a 34-year-old and help out his basketball team into the playoffs...???
And then get busted...???
McKinzey Sewell was born in Louisiana, went to job corps, got bored with job corps, and wanted to get back into school. And it was his wife who allegedly brought in faked documents to get Sewell into school...
Then, Sewell started dating another woman (more his age) and that when all hell came out...
Here's coverage from MyFoxMemphis...
The Memphis School District released a statement: “It has come to our attention that an ineligible player played in the closing minutes of the Region 8-AAA semi-finals against Whitehaven High School. Ridgeway High School reported this information to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). Ridgeway HS has forfeited that game and has been removed from the tournament playoffs.”
And the story has spiraled out of control where Sewell has been listed as 22 years old, a gang member in his days in Louisiana, and even responsible for a Ridgeway assistant coach's death.

Former NBA Star Mike Bibby Kicked out of Son's H.S Game
((ht: abc15.com))
You stay classy Mike Bibby.
Former NBA point guard Mike Bibby was escorted out his son's High School Basketball game this past Friday night by police.
According to ABC 15 in Phoenix, Bibby was watching son Michael, a freshman, play at Phoenix Shadow Mountain High School when the refs wanted him tossed from the stands for trying to argue with them. Police were called at that point because Bibby apparently continued arguing and didn't want to leave.

Way to set an example there Mr. Bibby. Are you bored?
Bibby, the elder played some 14-years in the NBA with multiple teams. And no, that pedigree alone doesn't give him the right to act the fool.
Nor does the fact that he's a graduate of the same school his son attends and who's game he was ejected from. And his jersey hangs from the rafters.
Really?
There isn't much else we can do but shake our head, hopefully Bibby is embarrassed about this, because he should be. We aren't going to preach good behavior and responsibility here, mostly because in an instance such as this, it should be understood.
No, we'll just say: Watch the video--(Thanks ABC15)

Half Court Bomb From Utah High School Basketball. Great Video
This comes from a high school basketball game Friday
night in Utah and it’s outstanding video.
The Herriman Mustangs battled the Olympus Titans and Herriman’s Alex
Johnson sent the game into overtime with a half court bomb.
You’ve got to love the enthusiasm of high school basketball.
Unfortunately for the Mustangs Olympus would
outscore Herriman 10-6 in the overtime period to win the game 49-45.

OSG High: Iowa State AD Kicked Out Of HS Game
((HT: KCCI-TV Des Moines))
Jamie Pollard is the Athletics Director at Iowa State...
But he's also the father of a basketball player on the Gilbert High School team. Gilbert and Colfax-Mingo were going at it in an IHSAA game where Pollard (the father) thought a call made by an official was a bad one...
Pollard was quite vocal about his displeasure and was asked to be escorted from the gym...
KCCI did a story and it is hyah...
School officials are cool with Pollard knowing that he was a father acting like a father- and fathers act that way sometimes...
The folks at Iowa State got to know Pollard when he was hired as AD...

Teddy Bear Inspires Lady Vols
((HT: WBIR-TV))
The HQ covered Andraya Carter during her uber-talented high school career in the Atlanta area at Buford High School. She was, visibly hurting and not fully recovered by title game time as her Buford Wolves team lost to The Lovett School.
Carter went on to Tennessee, but is having to sit out this year because of shoulder problems. But what she has done is combine her love of her sport, her team, and the devastation at her alma mater over the last two years into a team award that gets passed from player to player as they all see what heart has to do with everyday life.
In the form of a teddy bear...
Here's the story through Carter's eyes...
Glad to see that home is never far from Draya's heart...

Craziest 3-Point Shot Ever
((ht: cbssports.com))
Some things you just don't see very day. And this crazy 3-pointer by Gabrielle Gary of McCutcheon High School in Indiana certainly fills that description.
Take a look as Gary goes flying after a rebound on a missed shot, catches it, begins to fall out of bounds and flings the ball towards the basket.
It hits the rim, the backboard and then goes in.
No, it wasn't a buzzer beater, nor was it a game winner, but it was amazing to see. So when we came across it, we felt compelled to share.

One Handed Hoops Player is Probably Better than you
((ht: scoutsfocus.com))
Meet, or at least watch this video of Zach Hodskins in action. And look very closely at the video.
Sure, Zach is pretty good, he moves well and has a smooth, technically solid shooting form. He's 6-2, which is enough size for him to compete possibly on the college level.
Look one more time.
Notice that Zach is playing....with just one hand.
Zach's a junior at Milton High School in the North Atlanta suburbs and there is a really good chance you'll be seeing a bit more of him.
But for now, just watch the video.
And smile.
