Teddy Bear Inspires Lady Vols

((HT: WBIR-TV))

The HQ covered Andraya Carter during her uber-talented high school career in the Atlanta area at Buford High School. She was, visibly hurting and not fully recovered by title game time as her Buford Wolves team lost to The Lovett School.

Carter went on to Tennessee, but is having to sit out this year because of shoulder problems. But what she has done is combine her love of her sport, her team, and the devastation at her alma mater over the last two years into a team award that gets passed from player to player as they all see what heart has to do with everyday life.

In the form of a teddy bear...

Here's the story through Carter's eyes...

Glad to see that home is never far from Draya's heart...

Summitt Backs Jennings In Lawsuit Against UTK

((HT: WBIR-TV Knoxville))

For those of you new to this ballgame...

Anyone who covered Tennessee Volunteer athletics over the last three-and-a-half DECADES knows Debby Jennings. She was a pioneer at the school and in the posititons she held- which, eventually, led to a Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations responsibility.

In May, she was "retiring" from the posititon. Now, it has come to light that:

1) Jennings is in the process of suing the school for "unlawful discrimination and retaliation." She wants a trial by jury, monetary relief, and injunctive relief.

2) Through her attorney David Burkhalter, Jennings is also asking for a court order to require UT Athletic Director Dave Hart and and unnamed amount of others involved with the program to undergo "appropriate diversity and ethics training."

One of the affidavits in the case backing Jennings comes from UT head women's basketball coach emeritus Pat Summitt. Summitt's paperwork claims that she was initially forced out as head coach when the public perception was that she was stepping aside after her initial diagnosis of early-onset dementia.

From the affidavit concerning a meeting with Hart on March 14:

"During this one-on-one meeting, Dave Hart indicated to me that I would not be coaching the Lady Vol Basketball Team in the next school year and he planned to name Holly Warlick as the head coach. Dave Hart told me I would still have an office in Thompson-Boling Arena and my title could be Head Coach Emeritus. This was very surprising to me and very hurtful as that was a decision I would have liked to have made on my own at the end of the season after consulting with my family, doctors, colleagues, and friends and not be told this by Mr. Hart. I felt it was wrong."

But, later in the affidavit claims that in a subsequent meeting with Hart, he claimed that Summitt misinterpreted his remarks from the first meeting.

Here's the early story on the Jennings lawsuit...

The HQ is certain that this is far from over...

BREAKING NEWS: Pat Summitt Steps Down As Lady Vols Head Coach

Pat Summitt has stepped down as head coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols ending an historic 38 year career.

The milestones are many: Most wins by a college basketball coach, men or women, with 1,098. Eight NCAA Championships, 16 SEC Tournament and regular season titles just to name a few.

"I've loved being the head coach at Tennessee for 38 years, but I recognize that the time has come to move into the future and to step into a new role," Pat Summitt said in a release from the University of Tennessee.

Summitt's new role is head coach emeritus where she will continue to serve the women's basketball program and its coaching staff and as a liaison to the Director of Athletics according to a release from the University of Tennessee.

"If anyone asks, you can find me observing practice or in my office." Summitt said. "I love our players and my fellow coaches, and that's not going to change."

Associate head coach Holly Warlick has been named head coach of the Lady Vols. Needless to say Warlick has huge shoes to fill.

"I'm very thankful for all Pat Summitt has done to prepare me for this opportunity," Warlick said.

Warlick as been on Summitt's staff for 27 years and played for Summitt in the late 1970's.

Those of us who have been around Pat Summitt knows she can peel paint off the wall in the locker room but very engaging with a good heart.

Who can forget Summitt singing "Rocky Top" at a Tennessee men's basketball game a few short years ago for then head coach Bruce Pearl.

Great stuff.

1630 UPDATE: Here's the statement released from the school and Summitt...
((HT: WATE-TV))
"I've loved being the head coach at Tennessee for 38 years, but I recognize that the time has come to move into the future and to step into a new role.

I support Holly Warlick being named the next head coach, and I want to help ensure the stability of the program going forward. I would like to emphasize that I fully intend to continue working as head coach emeritus, mentoring and teaching life skills to our players, and I will continue my active role as a spokesperson in the fight against Alzheimer's through the Pat Summitt Foundation Fund.

"If anyone asks, you can find me observing practice or in my office. Coaching is the great passion of my life, and the job to me has always been an opportunity to work with our student-athletes and help them discover what they want. I will continue to make them my passion. I love our players and my fellow coaches, and that's not going to change."

The Beginning Of The End In Knoxville...??? DeMoss To WNBA...

((HT: UTLadyVols.com))

Is this the beginning of the end for the Summitt-coaching group on the UT campus...???

Mickie DeMoss is leaving to take a job with the Indiana Fever of the WNBA to join the staff of Lin Dunn...

"From my perspective, I am so excited for Mickie," head coach Pat Summitt said in a release. "Coaching at the next level has always been one of her professional aspirations, and the Fever is one of the best teams in the league.

"Obviously, Mickie is not only a great coach but she is a lifelong friend. We will certainly miss her at Tennessee and the contributions she has made during the 20 years she has been a part of our championship program."

DeMoss served 20 seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at Tennessee, three seasons as an assistant to Gail Goestenkors at Texas, and four years as the head coach at Kentucky.

Now, the next decisions come from Warlick, Lockwood, and Summitt herself...

Here's what Pat means to her program...

Baylor Knocks Off Lady Vols... Griner Ejected, Summitt Done...???

Coupla different things here...

Baylor was in control of their regional final against Tennessee, but the end got out of control...

Evidence below...
((HT: ESPN/NCAA/youtube))

The larger question discussed by the officials was the fate of the three Baylor players who left the bench- even if it was in the role of peace-maker. The end decision was ejections instead of suspensions.

Think about it... do you think those referees would want anything to do with taking one of the game's premier players out of a Final Four game...???

The HQ will admit that the situation was a bit more than intriguing...

The HQ also consulted the NCAA rule book which says in its Fight Reporting Procedres: head coach should withhold the offender(s) from the next
scheduled game even if the conference or athletics director has not
contacted him or her

Um... okay...

The larger issue is that the referee's decision stands regardless: The NCAA could correct an error, but not reverse an on-court decision...

But, the second issue is: Was this the last game that Pat Summitt coached for the program...??? Holly Warlick was doing a lot of the screaming on the sidelines this season, and we'll all monitor what's going on in Knoxville.

More when we know more...

TUESDAY UPDATE: Kris Budden caught up with Holly Warlick after the game...
