Brittney Griner Goes Off Against Sparks

((HT: WNBA/ESPN))

Brittney Griner can play basketball...

That is not in dispute...

She rebounded from her 2-for-11 performance in Game 1 of the Western Conference semis against Los Angeles to go 9-for-9 and set a playoff record for success from the floor...

Griner also can dunk the basketball...
Check out what she did yesterday as her most recent example...

Griner Dunks Twice, Delle Donne Wins...

((HT: WNBA on ESPN))

It was one of the more anticipated match-ups in the debut of the 2013 WNBA season with Chicago and Phoenix...

No, not because it was Chicago and Phoenix, but because it was Elena Delle Donne and Brittney Griner...
Griner gets history, but Delle Donne gets the win...

See if you can guess the voice calling the highlights...

Baylor Women Knocked Out By The Other Louisville

((HT: KWTX-TV))

A lot of people, okay... everyone... is calling the Baylor exit from the Women's tournament as one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) upset in tournament history...

The Louisville Cardinals hit 16-of-25 from three-point (which is absurd), hung around, hung around some more, and hit two free throws with less than 3 seconds left in regulation for the 82-81 win.

Baylor was winners of 74 of their last 75 games, defending national champion, and all of that important stuff...

So much for all that important stuff...

Here's what Baylor had to deal with in a team that didn't back down...
((HT: ESPN/NCAA))

The applause you heard was from Notre Dame, UConn, and everyone else left in the tournament that won't have to deal with the most dominant player of this era.

Louisville is 27-8 and was part of all four 6-seeds making it to the Sweet 16, and now they're one going a little further than Delaware.

Baylor's Brittney Griner took a piece out of Kansas State in Waco last night- actually several pieces...

The 90-68 win puts the Bears in prime position with another undefeated conference schedule and knocking themselves into the favorite to win it all again come early April...

Here's the highlights of the game...
Griner dunks at the :40 mark...

Muffet McGraw's Malaprop And Dust-Up

We've all seen men playing among boys...

The HQ is fairly certain that was where Notre Dame women's coach Muffet McGraw was heading when she tried to say the following last night after Baylor won 80-61 in the women's title game...
((HT: ESPN/alwayssunnyindetroit))

Here's the full quote from Curt Rallo's piece in the South Bend Tribune:

"I think she's one of a kind," McGraw said. "I think she's like a guy playing with women. It's just there's so many things that she can do that I've not seen a lot of women -- well, really, you know, there's been some guards that had some skill like that. But as a post player she's the best I've ever seen."

The HQ is well aware that McGraw was paying Griner a compliment, but she went ahead and apologized anyway...

Here's the statement from WBB SID Chris Masters' Twitter Feed:

"I am disappointed that ESPN would so clearly take my comment about Brittney out of context. I would hope that it was clear to those in attendance at Tuesday's press conference that my comments were meant to be complimentary, and in reference to her style of play and her dominance in our game, nothing more. Any attempt by others to read anything more into that comment is wrong, malicious and incredibly insulting to Brittney, Kim (Mulkey) and the Baylor women's basketball program, and it's a poor attempt by some to try and take away from what was a well-played national championship game. I have held, and continue to hold Brittney and the Baylor women's basketball program in the highest regard, and I congratulate them on winning the title this evening."

And now Griner gets to come back for her senior season...

Baylor Knocks Off Lady Vols... Griner Ejected, Summitt Done...???

Coupla different things here...

Baylor was in control of their regional final against Tennessee, but the end got out of control...

Evidence below...
((HT: ESPN/NCAA/youtube))

The larger question discussed by the officials was the fate of the three Baylor players who left the bench- even if it was in the role of peace-maker. The end decision was ejections instead of suspensions.

Think about it... do you think those referees would want anything to do with taking one of the game's premier players out of a Final Four game...???

The HQ will admit that the situation was a bit more than intriguing...

The HQ also consulted the NCAA rule book which says in its Fight Reporting Procedres: head coach should withhold the offender(s) from the next
scheduled game even if the conference or athletics director has not
contacted him or her

Um... okay...

The larger issue is that the referee's decision stands regardless: The NCAA could correct an error, but not reverse an on-court decision...

But, the second issue is: Was this the last game that Pat Summitt coached for the program...??? Holly Warlick was doing a lot of the screaming on the sidelines this season, and we'll all monitor what's going on in Knoxville.

More when we know more...

TUESDAY UPDATE: Kris Budden caught up with Holly Warlick after the game...

Griner Does It Again...

This time it was against Georgia Tech in a Sweet 16 match-up and it looked nothing like one of those Blake Griffin throwdowns that people call "dunks."

Evidence Below...
((HT: ESPN/NCAA/BaylorVisionMedia))

So, the HQ will now add "one" to every number posted in the previous Griner-Dunk story from earlier in the tournament...

Brittney Griner Dunks... Again...

((HT: ESPN/youtube))

Couldn't happen to a better bunch of Gators...
And it wasn't even as an "Oh, by the way"
It was early in the second half...

It was the 6th in her career- one behind the record held by Candace Parker. It was the second in the history of the NCAA tourney...
