The UCLA Bruins jumped out to a quick 31-6 lead in the Alamo Bowl Friday night. But they had to hold on for dear life to get the win.
The Kansas State Wildcats didn't give up and stormed back closing within 6 early in the 4th quarter. But a 67 yard touchdown run by Paul Perkins sealed the deal and the Bruins got a 40-35 win.
Perkins ran for 194 yards and a pair of TD's for UCLA who finished the season 10-3. Kansas State struggled to run the ball but QB Jake Waters through for 338 yards and a pair of TD's to receiver Tyler Lockett. The Wildcats finished their season at 9-4.
However, most aren't talking about the game the next morning. The big conversation surrounds UCLA coach Jim Mora and his near brush off of Kansas State coach Bill Snyder after the game. Mora was angry because Snyder called a timeout before the last play of the game and the Wildcats took a shot at UCLA coach Brett Hundley as he kneeled down afterwards.

Morning Wrap: Baylor Handles Kansas State Makes Playoff Statement
((ht: espn.com))
Was it enough?
That's the question all over the state of Texas Sunday morning after both Baylor and TCU took care of business on Saturday.
The Bears did their part Saturday night, powering past a dangerous Kansas State team 38-27 in Waco.
QB Bryce Petty, who left the previous weeks game with a concussion, came back to lead his team to a share of the Big 12 title with 412 yards passing and a TD. He ran for a TD as well.
Really the only questions lingering after the game were: 1) Will Baylor get to leapfrog TCU, the other co-champ of the Big 12, who is ranked ahead of them (as of 10am Sunday). 2) Will either Big 12 team be able to hold off the strong Ohio State sentiment coming after their championship win.
We say yes, despite the Big 12 only being 10 and not having a title game, both teams, Baylor and TCU should be ahead of Ohio State. Bottom line: tOSU lost to a crappy Va. Tech team.
Yes, TCU lost to Baylor and that should count. Baylor lost to an inferior West Virginia team.
So how does it play out? We have no earthly idea....
ESPN.com provides the Baylor highlights:
It should be noted that after the game, Baylor head coach Art Briles was um, less than thrilled with Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby. Bowlsby was in Waco after presenting a Big 12 trophy to TCU in Fort Worth just a few hours earlier. Both TCU and Baylor fans were chanting "One True Champion", something that the Big 12 is unable to produce. Unless it went to tiebreakers, which they aren't doing either.

TCU Takes Care of Business With Iowa State
((ht: espn.com))
The TCU vs. Iowa State game ended fairly quickly. If a 17-3 halftime lead wasn't enough, dropping a 31-spot in the 3rd quarter took care of it.
The Horned Frogs won a share of the Big 12 title Saturday afternoon, trouncing Iowa State 55-3. And while the Frogs were 3rd in the rigged for ESPN playoff poll going into the game, there is no assurance the win will get them a playoff berth.
Trevone Boykin threw for 460 yards and 4 TD's as TCU rolled up 722 yards of offense on a sunny afternoon in Fort Worth.
TCU's status as we said is uncertain due to the fact they are tied with Baylor for the conference lead. Baylor plays Kansas State Saturday night. A Bear win guarantees a tie, a Baylor loss gives TCU the conference and likely playoff bid.
There has been much discussion should Baylor and TCU finish tied as to whom should get a shot at the playoff. The Bears got a 61-58 win over the Frogs early in the season and many believe that will be enough to give them the nod.
We say wait and see what happens because we would not guarantee a Baylor win over a tough Kansas State game.

Morning Wrap: Kansas St Gets Win at West Virginia
((ht: foxsports.com))
It wasn't pretty, but it was a win that kept the Kansas State Wildcats tied for the lead in the Big 9 (12).
Behind 400 yards passing and a TD by QB Jake Waters, the Wildcats downed the West Virginia Mountaineers 26-20 in Morgantown, West Virginia Thursday night.
K-State won, despite being held to 1 yard rushing...for the entire game. The win moved them to 8-2, 6-1 in the Big 9(12).
As for West Virginia, they struggled without QB Clint Trickett who left the game in the 2nd quarter after sustaining what is believed to be a concussion. Skyler Howard replaced him and threw a TD pass, but it wasn't enough for the Mountaineers, who've lost their last 4 games.
The loss dropped them to 6-5, 4-4 in the Big 9(12).

CFB Review: Baylor Blows Out Oklahoma
((ht: foxsports.com))
The Baylor Bears appear to have gotten mad after being down 14-3 after one quarter to the Oklahoma Sooners.
So they did something about it.
45 straight points later, the Bears walked out of Memorial Stadium in Norman, Oklahoma with a 45-14 win.
Baylor's Corey Coleman had 15 catches for 224 yards and a touchdown and the Baylor defense knocked OU starting QB Trevor Knight out of the game.
Knight was injured on a sack where he was driven into the turf. His injury was serious enough that he was wheeled off the field, immobilized on a backboard. No word on his injuries, but he did give a #1 sign to the crowd.
Video from FOX Sports:
The win moves Baylor to 8-1 on the season, 5-1 in the Big 12. And barring a setback, it continues aligning the Bears with Kansas State, who they will likely face for what will probably be the Big 12 title and a playoff berth, at home on Dec. 6th.
Here is some more video from the game featuring Baylor QB Bryce Petty throwing a TD to the aforementioned Corey Coleman:

The Dirty Dozen and Bottom of the Barrel: Truth!
And the truth is, we've hit the College Football Playoff rankings time.
Let's just say, the way overhyped first edition left more than a few observers scratching their collective heads.
Okay, maybe not all of us.
Our point is; that's not going to be how they finish. No way. Too many rivalry games. All the SEC West teams still play one another. And TCU still has to play Kansas State.
A lot of things will change. Trust us. Things in college football always change.
Haha! Enjoy your cheesy 1980's video---
Us, we're moving on. Mostly because there's some bragging to be done here....
11-2 last week. Not bad. We've been pretty consistent this season. Consistently good that is!....Haha!
No, seriously, the 11-2 mark makes us 89-18 on the season and while not perfect, it is pretty damn impressive...
But enough about me. It's time to get "On with the Countdown"...
THE DIRTY DOZEN:
1) Florida State 7-0. Still don't like them. Still hope they lose. But not seeing it. Jimbo Fisher is a moron who thinks the SEC and ESPN is ganging up on him. Ha! You really are stupid Jimbo. You don't get it. It's not, nor has it ever been about you. But...they still are the defending champs and as the Nature Boy always says;
And that ain't happening. This Week: at Lousiville, Our Pick: FSU 38, Louisville 31
2) Mississippi State 7-0. Sure, they struggled with a better Kentucky team. But they get credit for surviving the 1st part of their SEC gauntlet. Still have games with Bama and Ole Miss left. Survive that and yeah, you may be the man...This Week: vs. Arkansas, Our Pick: Miss St. 37, Ark. 23
3) Alabama 7-1. Are they back? Did they ever leave? Sure...they coasted after getting a quick lead on Tennessee but nobody can stop Amari Cooper on offense. He and Blake Sims have transformed a once slow motion Tide offense. And that may get them back to the title game. Sigh...This Week: BYE
4) Auburn 7-1. Time to play big boy football there Tigers. You've had a few good breaks this season. The offense has struggled at times. The defense more so. But time to step up. After this week, you still have Georgia and Alabama to deal with. This Week: at Ole Miss, Our Pick: Ole Miss 27, Auburn 23
5) Ole Miss 7-1. Best defense in all the land. And had Bo Wallace not totally brain-farted, the Rebs might still be undefeated. But that's all it takes to change the season. These guys still have a chance to get in the playoff. Win this week and all that's left is the Egg Bowl. This Week: See #4
6) Kansas St. 7-1. The Wildcats are a couple missed field goals from being undefeated. And they are much better than you think. They just quietly go about their business and in the Big 9(12), as long as you play defense you have a shot. They play defense. This Week: vs. Oklahoma St., Our Pick: K-State 38, Okie St. 31
7) Oregon 7-1. The Ducks are still the Ducks and they'll always be loved by the pollsters. And as long as they have Marcus Mariota, they have a chance to beat anyone. But as always--they still suck on defense and tend to lose if under pressure. We'll see if that holds true. This Week: vs. Stanford, Our Pick: Oregon 43, Stanford 31
8) Michigan State 7-1. Your Little 10 champs? Maybe. We should know better after this week. They've scored a ton of points this year, given up a lot too. Beat Ohio State, they are likely to walk away with the title. B1G title that is. This Week: BYE
9) TCU 7-1. The temptation is to rank them higher after Trevonne Boykin and his pals dropped 82 on Texas Tech. And hey, that makes them the #1 in scoring avg this season. But...there are still roadblocks ahead. And if the Froggies don't play better D, they won't get past them. This Week: at West Virginia, Our Pick: West By-Gawd 51, TCU 47---UPSET ALERT!!
10) Notre Dame 7-1. Confession. We are not fans of the Irish. And it sometimes affects our ranking of the boys from South Bend. But...keep in mind, it's mostly because they are usually way overrated. This, to us, is the right place for them. But they could jump if the teams ahead cannibalize themselves. This Week: at Navy, Our Pick: Notre Dame 41, Navy 23
11) Georgia 7-1. Bad news--no Todd Gurley for 2 more weeks. Good news--The Dawgs haven't needed him. The improving defense has helped UGA get the table set to make this a memorable season. But they too always seem to gag under pressure. Can they avoid it this year? This Week: vs. Florida, Our Pick: UGA 23, UF 13
12) Arizona 7-1. Go Rich Rods...A bad, close loss to to Southern Cal is the only blemish for the Wildcats. But props to these guys. They've become relevant again after a long time out of the spotlight. And hey, they beat Oregon. So that counts too. This Week: at UCLA, Our Pick: Fighting Rodriguez's 37, UCLA 30
THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL:
5) UConn 1-6. Oh, poor, poor UConn. How many years ago was it you were playing in the Fiesta Bowl game? Amazing how fast fortunes can turn. This is a bad team that is likely to run the table. Except they finish with a Toilet Bowl game vs. SMU. This Week: vs. UCF, Our Pick: UCF 37, UConn 12
4) Georgia State 1-7. Guess the Panthers picked a bad week to play the nations best running team last week. 600 plus yards and 60-plus points later, Ga. Southern walked away with a win. There may be A winnable game on the schedule, but which one? This Week: at Appalachian St., Our Pick: Appy State 37, Ga. State 21
3) Tulsa 1-6. Another team that had a good run in the not so distant past. But hard times have come to their town. And we don't know if things are going to get better either. (Cheesy 80's music references--look them up). This Week: at Memphis, Our Pick: Memphis 31, Tulsa 23
2) Troy 1-7. The Trojans need to just write off this season. It's been ug, ug, ugly and it's not going to get better either...
No, even Trojan Man can save them. This Week: at Ga. Southern, Our Pick: Ga.Southern 51, Trojan Man 27
1) SMU 0-7. Come on man! Mack Brown? Really? Mack can't be that stupid, this is a horrid team. Must have been some sort of dream by the Dallas Morning News. Right? And hey, the Mustangs hit double figures last week (10pts)...so things are looking up. This Week: BYE, Our Pick: BYE 41, SMU 3 Ha!
So...are ya ready for November? Things are getting ready to change...a lot. Too many teams playing too many teams in the polls. They will cannibalize themselves. Really, they will...just wait and see...
We leave you with New Music Thursday---a very cool song:

ICYMI: Auburn Survives K-State
((ht: espn.com))
Okay, so this game was a heck of a lot closer than we...or anyone else thought it would be. And as it turned out, unless you are an Atlanta Falcons fan, this was the best football game on TV Thursday night be a large margin.
Auburn survived a trip to Manhattan, Kansas and a big scare from the Kansas State Wildcats of the Big 12, winning a non-conference game 20-14.
And to be totally honest, had K-State kicker Jake Cantele made the 3 Field Goals he attempted during the game, we're having a different conversation.
But he didn't.
The Tigers were shut down running the ball and had to rely on Quarterback Nick Marshall to win the game with his arm.
And Marshall did just that throwing for 231 yards and 2 TD's.
Auburn moves to 3-0 and the heart of their SEC schedule begins next week.

Ya Gotta Do What Ya Gotta Do...Just Ask Holly Rowe...

Kansas State upset Kansas last night in Manhattan...
And, as per usual in most of these games, the kids rush the floor when the game is over...
But, television still has some work to do...
Just take a look at what Holly Rowe did to get the job done...
Glad the table held all of them...

BUZZER BEATER: Jonathan Holmes Steps Up For Longhorns
Texas needed a big shot to overcome 22nd ranked Kansas State and Jonathan Holmes manned up and placed the dagger in the Wildcats.
Thanks ESPN
"I knew since they were worried about Javan (Felix), my man was going to go with him, so I just slipped to the ball and I was open and made the shot." Holmes said.
Holmes would have eight points and 10 rebounds against K-State.
"When John hit the shot I was happy, first because we won the game, and obviously because I missed those two free throws. But, it is good we can get out with the win." Texas guard Javan Felix said.
Felix led the 'Horns with 23 points
With the win Texas is now 4-2 in the Big 12 Conference, 15-4 overall.

ICYMI: Bill Snyder Faster Than Gatorade, North Carolina Faster Than Cincinnati...
((HT: Max Olson's Vine/WRALSportsfan.com))
Kansas State seemed to have no problems with Michigan and their freshman starting QB last night in Tempe- winning 31-14...
But the moment that some kept their eyes on was with 2:25 remaining when K-State head coach Bill Snyder outran his impromptu winner's shower...
Always coaching that Snyder...
And North Carolina but 16 on the board in a hurry and made very quick work of Cincinnati in Charlotte, 39-17
Tarheels coach Larry Fedora knew that, once his quarterback situation calmed down in the last half of the season, that everything would be fine...

CFB Shocker: North Dakota State Upsets Kansas State On An 80 Yard Drive
I wonder if Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder will play a game on Friday night again.
It was a big night on the K-State campus. It was the Wildcats season opener and newly renovated Bill Snyder Family Stadium was unveiled.
However North Dakota State didn't stick to script.
Bison quarterback Brock Jensen led North Dakota State on a game defining 80 yard drive capped off by his one yard touchdown run.
That sealed a stunning 24-21 win for North Dakota State over Kansas State ruining a big night in Manhattan, Kansas.
“We had to score a touchdown." Jensen said. "It was a scenario that we have practiced frequently - every week in practice. It was just one of those moments where we just had to gut it out. It was not easy by any stretch - we were tired and they were tired - but we found a way to just gut it out. That was the guttiest performance that I have seen in my entire life on any level. I am so proud of my team and I just thank God for letting me be a part of this.”
“I would like to congratulate all of our players." North Dakota head coach Craig Bohl said. "It was a great effort on their part showing determination and resolve when we were down. Many, many teams have come in and Kansas State has jumped up and those teams have folded; our guys did not do that. I thought our assistant coaches made some really excellent adjustments there when we needed to - certainly the fourth down play was huge in the game for us to get that and it was a great win for our program."
Friday nights loss to North Dakota State was the first time a Bill Snyder coached team had lost a season
opener since 1989.
"They are an extremely fine football team." Snyder said. "They play very hard, and they are a tough football team. They played harder than we did. They were tougher than we were. They were better coached than we were."
Something tells me practice won't be fun for K-State next week. Louisiana-Lafayette comes to the Little Apple next Saturday.

Okay, So All Of Our Brackets Are Dead... FGCU, LaSalle, Minnesota, Iowa State
Florida Gulf Coast, LaSalle, Iowa State, and Minnesota...
A 15, a 13, a 10, and an 11... to add to all the 12's that won...
Usually, the way the tournament works is that if one day is calm, the other one is a mess...
Friday was a mess...
FOSG Gil Tyree warned the world about Florida Gulf Coast since, of all things, FGCU was hanging out at the GPB Sports hotel during the Atlantic Sun Tournament/GHSA Basketball Championships. He commiserated with them and, apparently, knew what a lot of us didn't... that they could knock off a 2-seed...
Here's the, naturally, stunned Georgetown folks...

LaSalle knocked off Boise in the First Four in Dayton and got Kansas State...
Kansas State got an eyeful of the Explorers... LaSalle got a big lead, blew it late, and held on at the end...

They were... Tubby Smith and Minnesota were their standard amount of trouble makers...

Oh, Yeah... The Bee-Cee-Ess Went Into The Blender Last Night...
And it only took two losses for that to happen...
Notre Dame's easy win over Wake Forest (sorry, J-Dub) assures them, at least, the two seed going into their game with USC...
Georgia and Alabama control their own fates at the Ess-E-Cee title game in Atlanta...
But Just as soon as Collin Klein ends up on the cover of the SPorts magazine that has Illustrations, they get whacked by Baylor in Waco...
Didn't really see that coming...

And, then, The other issue happened in the Pac-12...
Remember what the HQ has always said about fast, athletic defenses squaring off against Oregon and their offense...???
Remember the Ess-E-Cee and their time keeping the Ducks in check...???
Stanford found a way- even if it took extra time to do it...
And, whaddya wanna bet Chip Kelly never ever kicks again...

((HT: G4SportsNews))
And, then, The other issue happened in the Pac-12...
Remember what the HQ has always said about fast, athletic defenses squaring off against Oregon and their offense...???
Remember the Ess-E-Cee and their time keeping the Ducks in check...???
Stanford found a way- even if it took extra time to do it...
And, whaddya wanna bet Chip Kelly never ever kicks again...

Collin Klein Heisman Front Runner? Geno Smith's Stock Going Down. K-State Crushes WVU 55-14
Geno Smith’s Heisman Trophy stock is dropping. Collin Klein’s stock is soaring to front
runner status for the stiff-arm pose.
Klein and his Kansas State Wildcats dominated West Virginia
at Morgantown 55-14 and the game didn’t seem that close.
Klein was damn near perfect, 19-21 passing for a
career high 323 yards, ran for four touchdowns and threw for 3 touchdowns.
The K-State quarterback clearly won the head to head
battle with former Heisman front runner Geno Smith who threw for 143 yards and one
touchdown however tossed his first two interceptions of the season.
"He doesn’t do anything wrong.” West Virginia
head coach Dana Holgorsen said. He is the same guy we saw on film. He is
exactly the same guy we thought he would be.”
Which is a damn good football player and Kansas
State is exactly who WVU thought they were, a BCS Championship Game contender.
Here’s the highlights from a stunned Morgantown, WV
(Thanks Fox Sports)
K-State has put themselves in the conversation with
Alabama and Oregon as the top three contenders for the BCS National Championship
Game.
The Wildcats own three Big 12 Conference wins on the
road, at Oklahoma, at Iowa State (and the Cyclones aren’t bad either.) and now
a domination of West Virginia.
The Wildcats final five games are first a pair of
home games vs Texas Tech and Oklahoma State then road trips to TCU and then to
Waco, Texas to play the Baylor Bears before finishing the season hosting Texas
at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. It’s just
seems very odd for K-State and Texas to finish the season (ramifications of
realignment.)
I’m just wondering how many are now jumping on the
K-State bandwagon. I’m there now.Saturday, March 31, 2012
Bruce Weber to K-State: Yeah, thought so
((kcstar.com))
Well, you can say this about the athletic administrators at Kansas State, they didn't waste a lot of time replacing fired head coach Frank Martin. In fact they are going to announce the new guy late Saturday afternoon.
It appears the new hoops coach in Manhattan, Kansas is going to be deposed Illinois coach Bruce Weber. If you are surprised to hear that, you can add your name to a rather lengthy list.
Weber takes over the Wildcat program after his Illinois team lost 11 of their last 13 games this season after a 6-1 start and multiple reports that he had "Lost" his team.
More on the hire from the KCStar RIGHT HERE
Yeah, we're scratching our heads too. Perhaps K-State didn't think they could do better. And they may have been right. The question is more...how hard did they look.
This isn't a total slam on Weber who had modest success in Champaign, but even the K-State players are apparently miffed at the move. They heard the stories of Weber's shortcomings. They, along with many others are wondering why they didn't try an up-and-comer from a small school or a top-flight assistant. But they didn't.
And for that, we wish them all the luck in the world.

DEVELOPING: Frank Martin To South Carolina...(UPDATED and UPDATED AGAIN)
((HT: KCStar/Robinett))
Looks like Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin is heading to Columbia, SC to be South Carolina’s next head coach- according to "sources close to the coach" a day after he denied interest in the job during CBS coverage of the regional finals.
That same "source" says Martin will be introduced tomorrow.
According to Robinett:
The State also reported that a trustees meeting had been called to discuss “a contractual matter.”
Earlier Monday, Martin’s agent, Richard Katz, said “we have had conversations” with South Carolina, but would not say a deal was done.

Southern Miss Pep Band Fails To Be Funny...
((HT: WDAM-TV Hattiesburg))
A lot of pep bands try to act like they're funny...
A lot of them aren't...
And the Southern Miss band tried to heckle a Kansas State player during their opening rounder...
Fail, fail, fail... and it had nothing to do with the Gerard Depardieu movie...
The report on the band is at the 3:00 mark...
"We deeply regret the remarks made by a few students at today’s game,” USM president Martha Saunders said today in a press release released by the Hattiesburg American's Patrick Magee. “The words of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university. We apologize to Mr. Rodriguez and will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action against the students involved in this isolated incident.”
Just play your instruments, don't talk...

Postgame With Frank Martin During A Loss...
((HT: FSKansasCity/youtube))
It's not an enjoyable experience...
And he still looks like he could kill someone...
The sideline guy is just hoping it's not him...
Get in quickly, and get away just as quickly...

Haha! K-State brags about being Texas Champs
![]() |
| 'nuff said... |
This is making the rounds on Twitter today and we just felt like we should share it.
Kansas State football has had a pretty good season so far. 9-2 and in fact, they've won not 1, not 2, or 3, but 4 games in the state of Texas. Something they or at least some fans who make t-shirts decided to remind the world about.
All that is missing is the title belt.
