Jay Cutler and The Awkward Post Game Press Conference

As bad as Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has been the past few weeks, we kind of feel bad for him after his Monday Night Football post-game presser. The Bears were again hammered, this time by the New Orleans Saints 31-15.

Cutler, who usually speaks after Bears coach Marc Trestman, came to the podium first. And there was only one reporter in the room at the time.

Cutler took 3 questions...all from ESPN.com's Mike Sando before a quizzical look at the PR folks. He then left the room before all the reporters, in the locker room at the time could get there.

Having participated in this ritual for many years, the usual procedure for most teams is the coach speaks first, then the locker room is opened. The quarterback for most teams will also speak in the conference room. Team PR generally notifies reporters/camera crews when that is about to happen.

It's a bit of a scramble/dance. Often times during a loss, players will get out of the place as fast as they can. If you aren't there, you miss your opportunity.

In this case, blame the PR staff. Poor Cutler has been under siege from opposing defenses, fans, his own coaches and teammates. This time he did nothing wrong, it just looked silly and really, really awkward.

Panthers And Saints Taking Swings At Each Other

((HT: NFL on FOX))

Let's face it, the NFC South is dirty for the wrong reasons...

And it seems to have taken on a life if its own in today's Panthers-Saints game when Carolina QB Cam Newton went over the top and scored- despite the actions of the New Orleans Defense

In the pile, about 45 seconds in if you missed it, was the Brandon Williams punch that led to his ejection. Cameron Jordan and Ronald Powell are the two Saints that, apparently, were the recipients of the swings.

Expect an envelope from the league to visit Williams' locker

BASTA Breakdown:A Closer Look at 49ers OT Win at New Orleans

By: Apurv Baichwal

This game was, quite literally, the definition of a nail-biter. It went deep into overtime, after a closely-matched and hard-fought regulation period. The 49ers eventually ended the game victorious, with a score of 27-24, winning on Phil Dawson’s field goal in overtime. Both teams badly needed this win to maintain their playoff hopes, but the 49ers played just well enough to secure the win.

Following this season’s theme, the 49ers played extremely well in the first half, while falling off in the second half. They came out of the gates strong, scoring fourteen unanswered points. These points were made even better by the fact that they were both rushing touchdowns, as the 49ers went back to what makes them a great team, their rushing offense. As of late, they had attempted to pass the ball too much, and they weren’t allowing Frank Gore to run loose on their opponents. Today, the 49ers emphasized the run game, even though they had an even split with thirty-two pass and rush attempts each, and this rediscovered emphasis carried the Niners to the win. Frank Gore rushed for eighty-one yards and a touchdown on twenty-three carries, looking like the workhorse that 49ers fans were accustomed to seeing. This was a welcome change, as the 49ers have not scored a rushing touchdown in their last five games. Frank Gore had not scored a rushing touchdown since Week 2, and he had not topped 50 yards since Week 5. Essentially, the 49ers rushing offense has been lackluster as of late, and today’s revival on the ground showed that they are a more complete team offensively.

Frank Gore scored the first touchdown of that the game on a four yard run after an interception by veteran safety Antoine Bethea. Bethea picked off the Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees on their first drive, and after snagging the ball at midfield, he ran it back twenty-two yards to the nineteen. Frank Gore then carried the ball three times, scoring on the third play. The defense played really well today, especially through the first half, as they held a usually prolific offense, especially at the Super Dome, somewhat stagnant.

After forcing a punt on the Saint’s next offensive drive, the 49ers took the ball on a long, deep drive for another score. They started at their own 21 yard line then used eight rushing plays and five passing plays to drive the ball down the field and score. The rookie running back Carlos Hyde got the score this time, on a nine-yard run that he took outside to the left, giving him his first touchdown since Week 3. He has been a great complement to Frank Gore, allowing the veteran to take rests liberally, while also providing a more elusive and cut-back heavy style of running. The bruiser Frank Gore and the elusive Carlos Hyde have combined for some great results as they have torn defenses up together, providing two different looks and a strong extra dimension to the 49ers offense. Carlos Hyde is still quite obviously the backup, as Frank Gore always gets a much larger share of the touches than him, but Hyde has been quite efficient with his looks, helping the team wherever he can, as he also serves as the kick returner. Carlos Hyde finished today’s game with only four carries, but he still managed 36 yards and a touchdown, giving him a quite respectable showing for a backup.

After scoring 14 points straight to open up the first quarter, the 49ers regressed slightly as they allowed the Saints to score 10 points in response. Fortunately, the 49ers were able to tack another score onto their total, allowing them to go into the half up 21-10. This score came in the middle of the second quarter, after another long drive from the 49ers’ 20. This drive had a lot more passing involved, as Kaepernick passed for 68 yards on the drive. He also threw for the touchdown, on a beautiful 15 yard touchdown to the right side of the end zone that Anquan Boldin snagged while diving. You can see this great play below, one that showcases Kaepernick and Boldin’s connection:

Anquan Boldin’s 15-yard touchdown catch

After this score, both teams were quiet for the rest of the half, in addition to also being extremely sloppy. The 49ers’ defense made a great stop and forced the Saints to punt. The 49ers recovered this punt close to midfield, and with a 1:13 to go in the half, with one timeout, it looked like the 49ers could add onto their score. However, Kaepernick decided to hold onto the ball for too long instead of throwing it away, and he fumbled it as he was sacked. Now, the Saints won back the ball with even better field position. Fortunately for San Francisco, Chris Culliver caught an interception in the end zone, ending the Saints’ drive and preventing them from scoring.

Coming out of halftime, the 49ers looked just a little slower on both sides of the ball, as the Saints appeared to have the edge. The 49ers were held scoreless in the third quarter while the Saints picked up a touchdown, bringing the game to 21-17.

The 49ers have been woefully awful in the fourth quarter this season, and that theme continued today, although they still managed to score. In the middle of the fourth quarter, the 49ers gave up the lead for the first time, as they allowed Drew Brees to connect with this Pro-Bowl tight end, and arguably the best in the league, Jimmy Graham for a two yard touchdown. The 49ers were able to contain him up until this point, but Graham’s superior size and strength was too much for the 49ers cornerbacks on this play as he used his basketball history to box out Chris Culliver and grab the touchdown pass.

The game looked to be all but lost after this score, as the Saints maintained their 24-21 lead deep into the fourth quarter. Fortunately, after a long and sloppy drive, filled with countless dropped passes, Phil Dawson was able to hit a 45 yard field goal to tie the game. On this drive, the 49ers looked extremely desperate as they started from their 22-yard line then suffered from three dropped passes, the first two from Anquan Boldin, and the last from Michael Crabtree. With these drops, the 49ers were facing a fourth and ten situation where they had to go for the first down if they wanted to win the game. Kaepernick took the snap, rolled out right, waited for a seemingly huge amount of time for a receiver to get open, then eventually rocketed the ball 51 yards to Michael Crabtree, who secured the ball on the ground to extend the drive and put the 49ers in field goal range. You can view this marvelous, game-changing, season-saving play below:

Michael Crabtree’s 51-yard catch

On the subject of drops, all the 49ers receivers seemed to have butterfingers today, as they dropped an immense number of passes, hindering the 49ers offense. Both Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin are usually sure-handed receivers, but today they had four and two drops respectively. Boldin received 15 targets today, but was only able to catch six of them, a quite pathetic number for him. However, on the bright side, he was able to turn these six catches into 95 yards and a touchdown. Crabtree only caught three of his eight targets, and he finished with 62 yards, including his game-saving catch in the fourth quarter. Stevie Johnson was the only sure-handed receiver today, as he caught all three of his targets for 43 yards.

With Phil Dawson’s field goal, the 49ers tied the game 24-24 and took it into overtime. However, in another exhilarating play, Drew Brees actually completed a 47 yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham with the clock winding down. Fortunately for the 49ers’ this play was nullified by an offensive pass interference flag, that saved the 49ers. Since the clock ran out on this play, the game was taken to overtime, with the 49ers barely hanging on to the game.

New Orleans won the toss and chose to possess the ball first, but this decision was to no avail as the 49ers defense was extremely strong and managed to force them to punt. Unfortunately, the Saints’ defense was similarly good, as they returned the favor and forced San Francisco to punt as well. With the new rules to overtime, after the Saints had punted first, any score would win the game, and after the 49ers punt, the Saints could have won the game with any score. In the defensive battle of overtime, the 49ere were able to win on the next drive, however, as they completely stuffed Drew Brees and the Saints. They allowed one first down but then clamped down with a five yard sack to make it 2nd and 15. They then had arguably had the play of the game, as Ahmad Brooks came in for another sack on Drew Brees, in addition to a fumble, as he stripped the ball right out of Brees’ hand. Rookie linebacker Chris Borland, who is filling in for the injured Patrick Willis, fell on this fumble and recovered it giving the 49ers the ball only 17 yards away from the end zone.

Chris Borland is another story of this game, as he has been huge the last two games filling in for Patrick Willis. In today’s game he recorded a whopping 17 tackles in addition to the fumble recovery. Eleven of his tackles were solo tackles, and he also had two tackles for losses as he was all over the field making plays everywhere. He was also stellar in pass defense in an overall amazing day. Borland was drafted just this year out of Wisconsin by the 49ers, with the 77th pick, in the third round. He has proven himself mightily, as he had a stellar outing today, and an equally stellar outing last week against the Rams. Last week, he recorded 18 combined tackles, including 15 solo and three tackles for loss. He has been a great fill in for Patrick Willis, as he plays with the energy of a rookie and the smarts of a veteran.

Back to the game, Ahmad Brooks and Chris Borland earned the 49ers the ball on the 17 yard line with a fumble. The 49ers then decided to play it safe and immediately take a 35 yard field goal for the 27-24 win.

As stated before, this game was tight to the very end, with multiple shifts in the lead. The 49ers played well overall, with the rushing attack looking very strong, and Colin Kaepernick seeming to benefit from its strength. Kaepernick threw for 210 yards and a touchdown while completing 14 of 32 passes. All of these numbers could have been much better as well if his wide receivers had not dropped so many balls. Even with the sloppiness of the usually strong receiving corps, the 49ers still managed to provide enough offense to come away with the win. Going into next week’s away matchup against the middling New York Giants, the 49ers need to tighten up some of the sloppiness on the offensive side. Specifically, Kaepernick needs to continue his growth and realize that it is okay to throw the ball away when he does not have a play, rather than making an errant throw that could be picked off or taking a sack. Also, the receivers need to snap out of whatever funk they were in today, as there were many balls dropped that very clearly should have been caught. Essentially, their drops costed the 49ers about 100 yards of offense and a touchdown. Finally, the 49ers need to continue to use the rushing game like they did today, to allow both Frank Gore and Carlos Hyde to pound defenses and give the defense rest. The strong rushing attack should be the basis of their offense, and it should allow them to gain yards when needed and open up the passing attack for deep throws.

The 49ers move to 5-4 with this win, and  they maintain their playoff chances, although they are somewhat slim. They are currently third in the NFC West, behind the Cardinals and the Seahawks. They need to pick up a few more wins to raise themselves in the standings and give themselves a chance to earn a wildcard spot. Although the chances right now are slim, the 49ers looked better this week, and they should be able to use this game as an example and pick up more wins in the future.

And Now Sean Payton Loses His Cool...

((HT: The Big Lead/WVUE/@TylerBouldin))

Sean Payton has every right to be bent out of shape over how the Detroit Lions scored twice in the last 4:30 and came from behind to beat Payton's New Orleans Saints.

So, this happened in the Payton presser when someone asked a question

Yeah, it was a game they should have won and that is what happens more than not...

The frustration levels are on the increase...

Bears, Saints, and who is next...???

Especially when you're 2-4 in a winnable division...

Very Cool: Saints Sign Paralyzed former Tulane Safety

((nola.com))

The NFL and it's teams, players and coaches aren't always angels, but nothing makes any of them happier than doing something good for someone else who needs it.

That's how former Tulane Green Wave Safety Devon Walker, paralyzed from the waste down after a hit in a September 2012 football game, found himself heading towards the New Orleans Saints practice facility Saturday afternoon. Right after his college graduation ceremony.

Walker got his degree in cell and molecular biology and then thought he was heading for some celebratory Oysters with his family only to find out he had a planned meeting scheduled.

That meeting with New Orleans Saints G.M Mickey Loomis and Head Coach Sean Payton. Both men had a gift waiting for Walker.

The gift, a contract for him to sign so he could become a Saint on Day 1 of the teams Rookie Camp.

Of course Walker signed and from all reports, the smile still hasn't left his face.

Though those same reports also say he's still looking for those Oysters too...

Arizona Adds to List of Darren Sharper Rape Charges

((ht: theneworleansadvocate.com))

Okay, so former NFL All-Pro Safety Darren Sharper is now facing charges in two states, is about to be indicted in a third state and is under investigation in two more.

The second state to officially charge the former New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers safety is Arizona. According to reports, a Tempe, Arizona (Maricopa County) Grand Jury indicted Sharper on two counts of sexual assault and three counts of administering a dangerous drug.

He's been accused of drugging then raping women in Tempe. He's been indicted in Los Angeles on similar charges and had been out on bond there until a warrant was taken for his arrest in New Orleans---again for similar charges. New Orleans officials expect to present their case for an indictment when their Grand Jury meets on Thursday. No word though when that indictment would be handed down.

And...did we mention he's being investigated in Las Vegas and Miami Beach?

Read about today's indictment in Arizona from the New Orleans Advocate RIGHT HERE

The challenge now appears to be who gets Sharper in court first. He appeared in Los Angeles because they were the 1st to charge him. And he had been released on a $1 million bond as long as he stayed there. That changed after the warrant was issued in New Orleans, he's been in an L.A County jail since.

While Sharper's attorney maintains his clients innocence, the appearance here is that of a serial rapist. His attorney's in all the case say Sharper will be exonerated, though it appears the pattern in each case is frighteningly similar.

We'll keep monitoring this story because we're guessing it's nowhere near over.

Darren Sharper Facing More Rape Charges

Yes, that's right, former All-Pro and Super Bowl winning NFL Safety Darren Sharper keeps adding to his ever growing list of rape charges.

Along with the multiple charges Sharper is facing in Los Angeles, you can now add two more charges that were filed in New Orleans. Sharper and another man are facing two aggravated rape charges in New Orleans where Sharper played for several years.

He turned himself in to Los Angeles police Thursday night, he's been ordered to not leave L.A by a judge while he's on bond for the charges in the city. Did we mention that his bail has been revoked in light of the new charges?

The other man in the New Orleans charges, an Erik Nunez, turned himself into police Friday morning.

A note here--Sharper has not been charged, but is a suspect in two more incidents, one in Nevada and one in Arizona. All of the incidents he's been linked to have taken place since October of last year.

We told you about the earlier incidents and the belief by many authorities that Mr. Sharper can be classified a serial rapist.

Is Former NFL Safety Darren Sharper a Serial Rapist?

((ht: latimes.com))

What started out as two rape charges may now be seven.

Former NFL safety Darren Sharper, also an NFL Network football analyst is facing multiple rape charges in four different states.

Sharper, who was charged Friday with 2 charges of rape and 5 charges involving drugging in Los Angeles, is now facing a different kind of heat on Saturday as the LA County D.A's office now have more alleged victims coming forward.

They say Sharper is now suspected of at least 7 rapes and of drugging at least 11 people in four states.

Which by most descriptions, would make him a serial rapist.

According to the reports, all the incidents happened between September of 2013 and January of this year.

Note--Sharper is only officially charged with the two L.A cases. Charges in New Orleans, Tempe, Arizona and Las Vegas have not been filed.

Sharper, who's 38-years old, played on the 2009 Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints team and has been suspended from his NFL Network job. He's out of jail on a $200K bond and had to forfeit  his passport.

ICYMI: Wild Wild Card Games Trim Field By 2

((HT: NFL on NBC))

Two games, three points separating teams from advancing to the next round... and it was two games that came at you from two different directions...

The early game was one that the HQ thought was absolutely done when the Indianapolis Colts were down 28. But, as we were shown, Andrew Luck can add another comeback to his stacks of feats and Chuck Pagano can call a 45-44 comeback one of his best coaching jobs around...

It's only the second time in playoff history a team rallied from a deficit of 28 or more points for the win. Buffalo trailed by 32 (35-3) before beating the Houston Oilers 41-38 in overtime in January 1993 (the Frank Reich-led comeback for those of you who can't remember that far back).

Luck's first career playoff victory sends Indianapolis to play either Denver or New England next weekend...

Here's Eric Allen breaking it down...

The nightcap was a test for Sean Payton and the New Orleans Saints since they haven't won a road playoff game in his tenure (0-3 versus 4-0 at home) and, after a first half where they were kept in check by Philadelphia's defense, they found their rhythm in the second half.

Legendary Coach Bum Phillips Passes Away

Bum Phillips
((ht: chron.com))

Legendary former Houston Oilers coach O.A "Bum" Phillips passed away Friday at the age of 90. And for those you too young to know, the Oilers were Houston's team long before the Texans arrived.

Phillips, who to many personified the "Texas" football coach, made a name for himself during the late 1970's when the Oilers (now Tennessee Titans) featured running back Earl Campbell and QB Dan Pastorini. Phillips led them to 2 AFC title games and 3 playoff berths in his 5-years running things.

He was immensely popular with the fans and even more so with his players thanks to his down home charm. And because he would often sport a big Cowboy hat while on the sidelines, TV loved him.

Bum moved on to coach the New Orleans Saints through 1985 and at that point, stepped away from the game he loved and his legend just continued to grow.

Bum's son Wade is the current defensive coordinator for the Houston Texans. His family is asking for anyone looking to express sympathies to make a donation to Bum Phillips Charities.

Team Gleason Accepts Sports Talk Hosts Apologies (UPDATE: Cellini Pledges Paycheck to Team Gleason)

Proving yet again that he and his foundation are better men, Team Gleason released a statement this afternoon stating they've forgiven the DJ's from Atlanta radio station 790 The Zone who made some poor, poor jokes at his expense.

Here's the statement from Steve Gleason himself:

Regarding the DJ skit in Atlanta yesterday. I would like to thank the public for their support. 'Defend Team Gleason' now has been officially redefined. Additionally, the DJ's have provided genuine apology. Received and accepted. We have all made mistakes in this life. How we learn from our mistakes is the measure of who we are.

I think everyone can learn from this event. It's clear to me that, on a national and global scale, ALS is not understood, which is part of why its under funded and largely ignored. In the past 36 hours lots of people have been talking. Lets talk about this....There are zero treatments for ALS. If you take any action as a result of this event, I prefer it to end ALS. See what we are doing to change that at TeamGleason.org.

For more on Team Gleason, the link to his website is RIGHT HERE

If you'd like to donate to Team Gleason, the link is RIGHT HERE

Thus far, Brother Jon has handled this story and we haven't chimed in. I'm chiming in. I know and have worked with 2 of the 3 "DJ's" or Sports Talk Hosts involved.

And to hear they tried to do something like this was NOT a surprise. But like Gleason, rather than dwell on my distaste for them, I'm looking at the positive that comes from this.

Steve Gleason is a BIG man to accept their apology and that he did, just makes my respect for him and his battle only grow.

The good thing about what happened to the 3 "Hosts" is this probably should have happened years ago (them getting themselves fired), so let's call it Karma.

Like Gleason, I think a lot of good comes from what happened. It moved ALS forward in the discussion. It needs to be discussed/addressed or what ever else you want to call it.

This is a golden opportunity for people in Atlanta, New Orleans and other places to discover more of what the disease is and can do. Other than the inspiring stories of those battling it, it's a horrible affliction that needs attention.

Let's hope everyone takes advantage of the learning experience despite where it originated from.

Two side notes: Cellini has deleted his Twitter account, and according to Katherine Terrell at nola.com:

Cellini, who told NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune that he had no illusions about securing future employment, made a pledge if that were to happen.

"When and if I do work in radio again, I'm going to donate my first month's salary to Team Gleason and the fight against ALS," he said in a phone call Tuesday morning. "I know that feelings are very raw, and I've very, very contrite.

"I realize what I did was a horrible, horrible thing."

Interesting to see if that happens...

Later in the evening, Cellini sent a follow-up note:

The comments that I made during the interview about Lincoln Financial were made out of pure emotion, as a result of losing my job after 16 years with the station. They've been nothing but fair to me over the past three plus years since they purchased 790 The Zone.

The New Orleans Side of 790TheZone's Bad Bit... (UPDATE: Dimino Apologizes)

First, here's the Saints statement, through team spokesman Greg Bensel:

“The New Orleans Saints support Steve Gleason not only for what he means to our organization and our city but more importantly what he means in his tremendous fight to find a cure for ALS...we have not heard the radio report, but if what is reported is accurate, it is grossly offensive."

Fox 8's Chad Sabadie started their team coverage
((HT: Fox8Live))
FOX 8 WVUE New Orleans News, Weather, Sports

The HQ agrees with Scott Shanle...

And now has a bit of a question... if Team Gleason knew of the bit, but wouldn't comment to WWL-TV, what was the situation surrounding the apology that Cellini apparently gave to Michel Gleason...

We digress...

Here's the ABC26 version...

The HQ now lies in wait for the rant from hell that New Orleans talk host Bobby Hebert has to say about this- and his former station...

Actually, we have some links for that...

Bobby and Deke Bellavia did two interviews on their show. One with Jane Gilbert, CEO of the ALS Association, and another with D. Orlando Ledbetter of the AJC...

2300 UPDATE: Here is the full Chris Dimino apology on his Facebook page...

So where to begin. The obvious and rightful place is with an apology. And the reality of knowing that falls short...no matter what I say...is heartbreaking.

The sheer stupidity of trying to put this as a failed attempt at humor is not lost on me.

The words "Should have known better" mean nothing to me. And shouldn't to you right now

I would like to though offer my apology. Knowing that it is everyone's right not to accept it. Or even consider accepting it for now.

My apologies go out first to Steve Gleason and his family. The weight of what he and they are going through did not need to be made heavier or worse by the pure and straight insensitivity of my actions.

I also want to offer up my apologies to all who are not only dealing with ALS..but to those who are dealing with ANYTHING that has made themself or family and friends subject to the physical and emotional heartache of any debilitating disease or condition.

As a father of two girls, I put myself in a position that I have begged...pleaded..DEMANDED..they not put themselves in. That of the bully. The mean kid. The one who thinks what they say or do comes with no consequence. It does. It always does.

I have no illusion as to what 19 years on the radio...30 years of being a grown man..and most importantly almost 10 years of being a father..and what you build up in your name and reputation over those periods of time..should and does mean.

Now I know how quickly a stupid and worse than that non thinking moment can change all of it.

I hope I get a chance to prove this is not who I want to be. It was and is who "I am" today though. That much is not lost on me.

I have spent so long not trying to put other people in a bad place because of me. Today I failed miserably.

I'm very open to any and all dialogue as it pertains to the people I have hurt and disappointed. I've had that dialogue with myself..my wife and will with my kids.

Thanks for at least this much of your time

Chris Dimino
