Black Monday: Falcons Fire Coach Mike Smith

The Atlanta Falcons have announced they've parted ways with now former head coach Mike Smith.

On Black Monday, the day after the NFL regular season came to an end, Smith became the 3rd casualty.

He coached the Falcons for 7 years beginning in 2008. And during that time, the team had quite a bit of success, recording back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in their history. Smith got them into the playoffs 5 times and helped guide them within a touchdown of a Super Bowl berth.

But the past two seasons haven't been as kind as the Falcons fell victim to bad luck, injuries and problems finding quality linemen. Smith also made some questionable coaching decisions which this past season cost his team two games.

We should add that GM Thomas Dimitroff is not without blame here as the Falcons have severely lacked top flight talent on the line and have not drafted well the past several seasons.

But Dmitroff is likely to stay--though his status is a bit iffy too.

We feel bad about this, having covered the Falcons for 10-years. We were there when Smitty was hired and he was a total class act.

But the team has not produced and ultimately, owner Arthur Blank, with a billion dollar stadium on the way had to make a change. And he made it with the hope a new regime can bring in a winning team to launch the new building.

Only time will tell.

Morning Wrap: Titans vs. Jets--The Brawl for Last Place (But What An Ending!)

((ht: cbssports.com))

So there weren't exactly a whole lot of highlights late Sunday afternoon when the putrid New York Jets took on the hapless Tennessee Titans.

Outside of the last play of the game, a wild attempt at re-creating the Music City Miracle, perhaps the best video of the game came here.

Jets QB Geno Smith and a slew of Jets lineman exchange some words. One of them slaps Smith's helmet, bringing his teammates out onto the field.

Some more words were exchanged. And that's when the punches flew.

Video from CBSSports.com:

But, just as wild was the end of the game as the Titans- in the first-ever NFL game to finish 16-11 got nine yards away from another Music City Miracle...

Charlie Whitehurst to Dexter McCluster- who lateraled back to Nate Washington. He then found Whitehurst again across the field, who eventually lateraled to a streaking Delanie Walker.

Walker was that close...

Morning Wrap: Report--UAB Football Could Easily Be Self Sufficient

((ht: sports.vice.com))

Interesting story that we came across this morning from the folks at Vice Sports. The story--written by Andy Schwarz, talks about the demise of UAB football and how the financial numbers were spun to make it look like the school was losing money.

And if you read the whole thing, it explains a lot.

Schwarz talks in detail about the CarrSports report, which UAB president Ray Watts used as his excuse/reason for dropping football.

The Carr report talked about cost and revenues going up, but as Schwarz rightly points out, it assumes a rise in costs that don't actually exist. Rather, those "increased" costs are primarily just the school charging itself for something that does not in the real world cost themselves anything. A school does not "bring in" money from a scholarship athlete, but there's no cost involved either because the student is there. If so, the billing is just "Charging themselves" for the classes said student attends.

Think about it for a second.

How can a school say they are losing money on something they don't actually pay for?

Yeah...exactly.

Read the full story from Vice Sports RIGHT HERE, it explains a lot.

Yes, we have done budgeting before and we fully understand that expenses are given and taken from different budgets. It's done for tax and accounting purposes. We know that. And we know the cost of buying equipment, building facilities and travel expenses add up. But in this case, the cost appears to be covered.

Numbers...or expenses/costs are amazing things, particularly for organizations or businesses that bring in large amounts of money. You can shuffle things around, charge yourself for things if you need to. And claim it as an expense.

It's a legitimate claim, businesses do it all the time.

Here's an example for you: We spent some time working at CNN in our past. CNN is a rather large organization with multiple show teams that all work for the same company. But the show teams, if they wanted a live shot or video from an affiliate, were billed for the cost of acquiring it.

Mind you the money came from the same place. But it was billed to the show team.

Yes, a separate budget.

Trust us when we say it is complicated. But it's all in how you spin it too.

The point here is much simpler. UAB, if they so chose, could easily justify the cost of football if that was in their best interest. The money that appears to be coming in is money they "Technically" is enough to cover what they "out of pocket" are spending.

Yes, we know, it's a different budget. But as Schwarz points out and rightfully so, UAB is looking to grow. Yet it cut it's highest profile PR arm. And that will lose them a very profitable conference affiliation. They will not be able to stay in Conference USA without football.

But the state Board of Trustees is willing to live with that. The reason: It ends the vendetta that certain members had against the Blazers. It gets rid of any potential competition from a school that had a chance at becoming just that.

It meant something had to give. And in this case it was the UAB Blazers football team.

Three Faulkner U. Athletes Charged in Death of Fourth Athlete

((ht: wsfa.com))

Three 19-year old Faulkner University athletes are facing murder charges Friday morning in the shooting death of a fourth athlete.

19-year old Ryan Brooks was shot and killed by a man who's home was being robbed by the 4 athletes Wednesday night. The homeowner shot and killed Brooks, police say that was a self-defense killing.

But the other 3 men involved in the robbery, 19-year olds Marshall Wall, Ronnie Williams and Tabias Russell were charged in death because according to Alabama law, they are suspects in the robbery along with Brooks.

Faulkner University is a small, private Christian school outside of Montgomery, Alabama. Wall was a part of the school's soccer team, Williams, Russell and Brooks all were part of the J.V football program.

Montgomery Police are still investigating the incident, no word on a court date or bond for the athletes.

Uh Oh: Richard Sherman and Doug Baldwin Take Shots at NFL Media Policy

Oh, this is not going to end well. But it is quite a good laugh never the less.

Check out Seattle Seahawks DB Richard Sherman and teammate, WR Doug Baldwin making their statement about the NFL's attempt at a media policy.

The pair were making a point after teammate Marshawn Lynch was fined $100,000 for avoiding Seahawks media availability 6 weeks in a row.

The Tacoma News Journal shares the video:

Sherman, a spokesperson for Beats headphones makes a very good point. Players don't get paid for talking to the media. They get paid for sponsorships. Sherman and others have been fined for wearing Beats, because they aren't an NFL sponsor. The players get angry about that.

He's not wrong, and it's a fine line that the NFL has to dance trying to accommodate local media requests with their sponsors.

The league and the media have clashed before as the NFL has tried at various time to limit accessibility. It's failed because the local reporters fought back.

But the players should not be forced...or fined if they choose not to talk. That should be their right. There are players that will always talk and having spent a good chunk of our career in Sports, sometimes you take whatever you can get.

And if you have a specific request, you go through media relations. If they still choose to not speak to you, you find someone else to do a story on.

Louisiana H.S Wins Playoff Game on Hail Mary Pass

This doesn't happen very often, but it's pretty cool when it does.

Set-up: Last play of the Dunham (Baton Rouge, LA) vs. Holy Savior Menard in the Louisiana Division III Select Playoffs. Menard is up 24-21, clock is nearing zero.

Dunham has the ball on Menard's 46 yard line.

Quarterback Jayron Walker drops back and throws the ball as far as he can into a crowded end zone full of players from both teams.

And somehow the ball ends up in receiver Joshua Matthews's hands.

Touchdown...game over, Dunham comes back and gets the win 27-24.

Wow!

Here's video of the fateful play--

Morning Wrap: Seattle Seahawk Makes Detour Before Start of Game

((ht: foxsports.com))

Ooops...sometimes wild animals don't always stick to the script...

Which is exactly what happened Sunday afternoon before the New York Giants/Seattle Seahawks game in Seattle.

Taima the Auger Hawk gets paraded around the field before the game and is considered one of the teams mascots.

Which is fine...except Taima decided to go off script. And visit---or land on the head of a surprised Seahawks fan.

Matthew McConaughey Can Throw a Football Pretty Good

((ht: nbcsports.com))

Hey, doesn't everyone who grows up in Texas know how to throw a football well?

We have to admit, after watching this that Interstellar star Matthew McConaughey has a gun. The guy knows how to throw a football.

Check out video of him on Jimmy Fallon's show Thursday night. Technically speaking, the delivery is spot on. We're guessing that was not the 1st time he's thrown. Wonder if the dude was a QB in High School or something?

As for Fallon, well, he was a bit overmatched in this competition--ha!

Bill Murray Intros Sunday Morning NFL Because Of Course He Does

Bill Murray is awesome.

Granted we don't know him personally, but he just exists on this alternate, dry humor plane where everything is living life to it's fullest, doing what you want to do kind of dali-lama-ish existence where he just drops wisdom upon us all.

Check out the intro he did Sunday morning to kick off FOXSports's coverage of the Atlanta Falcons/Detroit Lions game in London.

All we can say is that it's "So Very Bill Murray"

Little League Coach Fined and Suspended for 8-Year Old's TD

((ht: cbs46.com))

When is an interception return for a touchdown in the 4th quarter of a game costly?

When it happens in a little league game where there is a mercy rule and the TD return exceeded it.

That's what happened over the weekend in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The Lawrenceville Black Knights were beating Collins Hill 32-0, when 8-year old Elijah Burrell intercepted a pass and started returning it for a TD. That broke a Gwinnett Football League rule that says a 33 point spread in a game is enough for the game to be called.

The coach of the Black Knights, who for some reason was NOT named in the story, was fined $500 and suspended for a game.

Parents and the kids, mostly 8 and 9 year olds are chipping in to pay for their coaches defense.

Erik Richards of the Gwinnett Football league told Atlanta TV Station CBS46 that the Knights laid on the ground, ran off the field and mocked the other team. Which is why he is enforcing the penalty.

Which is fine, but begs a question that nobody has appeared to ask? Why didn't the refs call the game at 32-0? If the letter of the law is 33 points is the difference, this would have happened at the 1st attempt the Black Knights made at scoring. There was no way for them NOT to break the rule.

So why all the hullabaloo? We don't know, the whole thing sounds silly...

Buffalo Bills Sold to Sabres Owner Pegula

((ht: buffalonews.com))

It's official and it's not likely you'll see the Buffalo Bills leaving upstate New York for anything other than a home game in the foreseeable future.

The estate of late team owner Ralph Wilson reached an agreement to sell the team to the Pegula family Tuesday afternoon reportedly for $1.1 billion.

Terry Pegula is the owner of the NHL Buffalo Sabres.

There had been much discussion and hand wringing among the Bills faithful that the team, which had been playing a game or two a year in Toronto, would be sold to a group that would move them permanently to Canada.

That won't happen now.

Pegula and his wife Kim released a statement through the team Tuesday afternoon saying in part:

“Kim and I are humbled and honored that the Wilson family has chosen us to be the second owner of the Buffalo Bills. Pending the NFL approval process, being the next owner of the Buffalo Bills would be a great privilege for our family. Ralph Wilson left an indelible mark on our community and we will strive every day to honor his legacy.

Our interest in owning the Bills has everything to do with the people of Western New York and our passion for football. We have knowledgeable, dedicated fans here and along with our ownership of the Buffalo Sabres, it is gratifying to reassure these great fans that two franchises so important to our region are both here to stay."

The couple added they wouldn't comment further until the sale, which is expected to go through, is approved by the NFL at their next meeting Oct. 8th.

The Bills also released a full statement:

"Subject to the approval of the NFL owners and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions, the definitive agreement calls for the Pegula family to acquire all of the interest in the Buffalo Bills franchise from the Wilson trust. The parties intend to submit the agreement for approval by the NFL owners at their meeting in New York City on October 8.

Buffalo Bills Controlling Owner Mary Wilson said, “This is a very important day in the history of the Buffalo Bills franchise. Ralph brought professional football to Buffalo in 1959 and it was his life’s passion. He loved his team and he cherished the fans and his legacy will remain for all-time. Ralph would have been pleased with the sale of the team to the Terry Pegula family, who has been so committed to Buffalo and the Western New York region.”

“I sincerely wish Terry and Kim Pegula all the best with the Buffalo Bills and I’m happy for all Bills fans. Our hope is that this great franchise brings them as much excitement and joy as it did for Ralph and that they bring home a Super Bowl championship for Bills fans everywhere. Go Bills!”

And there ya have it--

Things You Can't Unsee: Steve Spurrier Dancing a Jig

((ht: Twitter/@JeffTynerGC))

Zoinks! It really is college football time in the south.

Rainy, humid days and crappy Braves baseball have chased most Southern Sports fans towards their other favorite pastime, College Football.

Yes, College Football.

And nobody, or very few people are better "College Football" characters than University of South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier.

Or the master of the pun...

But today, as he strolled out to the practice field he became happy "Ball Coach"...at least that's what it appears.

Check out the 'ol ball coach cutting a rug...

Gamecock Punter Smashes Windshield With His Handiwork

The lesson learned here should always be:

More Trouble for UGA Football: Linebacker Arrested for DUI

Davin Bellamy
((ht: macon.com))

Safe to say it's not been the quietest offseason in University of Georgia football history.

The Macon Telegraph reports early Saturday morning, backup linebacker Davin Bellamy was pulled over and arrested on DUI and speeding charges by the Athens-Clarke County PD.

Just 4 days ago, the Dawgs had to deal with DL Jonathan Taylor getting arrested and charged with assault. Taylor was dropped from the program the next day.

In Bellamy's case, the charges are technically misdemeanors and whether you call this trivializing things or not, it's something college students do. Quite frequently.

Read the full story on what happened from the Telegraph RIGHT HERE

Per the Telegraph, the school has the ability to make Bellamy sit out for two games. Since this incident just happened (5am Saturday, we're posting this at 8:30a Saturday), the University nor coach Mark Richt have commented or had a chance to review what happened.

Only time will tell what they decide to do.

And yes, this season's camp opens in just a few days. It's this time of year coaches get nervous because they don't technically get to keep close tabs on players. And like we said, so far, the week for the Dawgs can't get much worse.

The Rockford Files And Football

((HT: Universal Studios Television))

James Garner passed today at the age of 86...

Frankly, the HQ didn't realize he was 86 and we also didn't realize he was a purple heart recipient for the time he served this country. We would like to thank him for all that he did in his time with us here on this plane...

So, as a tip of the hat to Garner, we found a "Rockford Files" episode that involves football and has Dick Butkus...

The HQ will still watch the Files when we can and we still maintain that Jim should have always been with Gretchen Corbett's character, Beth Davenport...

Your Best Arena Football Catch Of The Day (Yesterday's Version)

((ht: bleacherreport.com))

Yes world, there is an "Arena Football Catch of Day". Because we decided there would be one. Even if it happened the day before

Tell your friends.

Check out New Orleans Voodoo WR Courtney Smith taking one for the team Monday night, hauling in the TD catch as he goes head-over-heels over the retaining wall in a game vs. the Jacksonville Sharks.

Smith holds on to the ball and the Voodoo held on for the win, leaving Jacksonville with a 36-35 win.

Reasons You Shouldn't Lean Over Arena Football Field: Boom!

If you've ever seen an Arena Football game, they put walls up to keep the fans off the field and create a pretty sudden "out of bounds" area for the players.

And there is a reason that you are told not to lean in to the field of play.

But there's always at least one moronic fan who ignores that warning and does exactly what they should not do.

This guy, in Spokane, Washington at the Spokane Shock vs. Arizona Wranglers game...well, he probably won't make that mistake again.

Look what happens to the Shock fan, who gets the Shock of his life on an overthrown pass. He doesn't get bumped, he gets plowed by the wide receiver trying to make the catch.

And yeah, it really does look like it hurt.

Because It's a Slow Morning: Chad Johnson Scores 1st CFL TD

Okay, yeah, we know...why would anyone care about a former NFL big mouth banished to the Canadian Football League.

Well, because it's the artist formerly known as "Ochocinco".

Chad Johnson, ex-Cincinnati Bengals and New England Patriots WR and purveyor of wacky and crazy touchdown dances, got to revisit his past glory Friday night.

Johnson, now playing for the Montreal Alouettes after sitting out of football last season, caught his 1st Canadian TD pass when his Alouettes played the Winnipeg Blue-Bombers.

The 46-yard catch was Johnson's only catch of the day and the Blue-Bombers ended up winning the game 34-33.

Here's your video and celebration. For Chad, yes, it was pretty tame...

High Bisque, Low Reward: Winston Suspended From FSU Baseball Team For Food Lift

((HT: WCTV-TV))

The jokes, memes, and stills created out of FSU QB Jameis Winston's crab leg-lifting at a Tallahassee grocery store have led to the usual, tremendous amount of jokes...

Now, the serious part for someone who really should have been keeping his slate clean with everything else swirling around the Tallahassee campus at present...

But, the Leon County (FL) Sheriff's Office held a press conference this afternoon to discuss...
((HT: Tallahassee.com))
Here's the end results for the civil citation for the $32.73 non-purchase: “As a result of his citation last night, we are suspending Jameis Winston from the baseball team,” said FSU Baseball Coach Mike Martin. “I am confident he will complete his community service obligation and the situation will be resolved soon.” “I fully support Coach Martin’s decision and will also make sure that Jameis meets all obligations, which I know he will,” said FSU Football Coach Jimbo Fisher.
He can still practice and compete since it's a violation of the FSU Code of Conduct. But that decision, ultimately, rests with each individual coach.

Winston was not arrested and will not face criminal charges if he completes the terms of the civil diversion program...

Okay, faithful reader...
What's your favorite response/pun/funny today to the Winston fiasco...???

Matthew Stafford With the Full Court Swish

((ht: cbssports.com))

You think quarterbacks aren't accurate throwing the ball?

Even one with sometimes debatable accuracy like Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions?

Stafford, owner of one of the strongest throwing arms in football was playing around on a basketball court the other day with his girlfriend Kelly Hall.

That's when he decided to try and go for it all.

Hall provides the Instagram Video:
