Morning Wrap: Butch Jones Gets Tennessee Contract Extension

We report news of Tennessee head coach Butch Jones getting a contract extension Monday morning for one reason: To give the Michigan fans a reality check. He's not taking your job.

Jones, who led the Volunteers to their 1st bowl bid since 2010 will get $3.6 million a year through 2020. Reports say there is money for his assistants to get raises as well.

The move coincides with a report from FootballScoop.com that Michigan approached Tennessee for approval to speak with Jones. A question that he apparently politely declined.

So the Vols, a team many think have a bright future in the mediocre SEC East have their coach locked up, a ton of young talent in place and future star in QB Josh Dobbs.

That adds up to the school potentially regaining the past glory it's fan base longs for and has wanted since the demise of Phillip Fulmer.

Morning Wrap: Hugh Freeze Agrees To Ole Miss Contract Extension

((ht: espn.com))

If you are asking yourself why are we posting a story on a college football coach getting a contract extension, then you aren't paying attention to the Coaching Carousel season.

Ole Miss Coach Hugh Freeze got his extension Tuesday morning. Complete with a pay bump--up to $4 million a year per reports.

And it's newsworthy because several blogs/outlets reported that he was the leader for the University of Florida open coaching job.

Those reports were obviously incorrect.

Freeze has gotten results each year with the Rebels, this year the team has been in the Top 10 most of the season and just beat arch rival Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl, knocking the Bulldogs out of playoff contention.

Freeze announced the contract on Twitter:

His boss, Athletic Director Ross Bjork confirmed it:

Cubs TV Contract Up For Bid, WGN Could Lose Them...

((HT: Chicago Tribune/Channick))

For the first time since 1948, the Chicago Cubs and WGN-TV could not be television partners after the current contract expires after next season...

Which, for a lot of early cable heads like the HQ, meant we grew up on things like this...

But, what this could mean are the Cubs could be going the way of the Dodgers and creating their own network. Or they could be doing it to jack up the rates for CSN Chicago and WGN. Everyone could be be just posturing to get more money, more games, or just more stuff...

From Channick on the dollars:

The Cubs get about $20 million to air 70 games each year on WGN. If the team didn’t give notice to opt out at this point in the contract, the deal would run through 2022 at the current rate, and the Cubs would lose any leverage for renegotiating the broadcast rights, according to sources.

So, Why Does Kirk Ferentz Still Have A Job...???

((HT: WHO-TV))

Because he has a four-million dollar per year deal that has him coaching through 2020

Kirk Ferentz has a contract through January 31, 2020, that pays him between $1.87M and $2.07M per season in base salary, plus another $1.48M per season in "recurring supplemental payments."

He also gets a "longevity bonus" which requires Iowa AD Gary Barta pay him between $325,000 and $575,000 on an escalating scale throughout the balance of his deal...

In the year 2020...

The buyout clause in Kirk Ferentz's contract mandates that Barta pay him 75% of his base salary if he is terminated without cause- $219,142 per month until the contract ends in January 2020.

He is the state's highest paid employee, making $1.4 million more than the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics director Jean Robillard.

Oh, Iowa lost to Northern Illinois yesterday...
Here's the highlights...

So, why is Kirk Ferentz still employed...???

He's too expensive to fire...

OSG High: Steubenville HSFB Coach Gets Contract Extension... Really...

((HT: Salon.com, McDonough))

Katie McDonough lets us all know that Steubenville High head football coach Reno Saccoccia- for whatever he did (or "didn't do") in the rape case that involved two of his players- gets a contract extension...

In a previous Salon piece during the rape trial in Steubenville, McDonough divulged:

text messages seized from Mays’ cellphone indicate that Saccoccia had seen the video in which another student “joked” that “Trent and Ma’lik raped someone” as soon as it was released.

The day after the incident, Mays texted a friend: “I got Reno. He took care of it and shit ain’t gonna happen, even if they did take it to court. Like he was joking about it so I’m not worried,” according to an agent with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, who testified in the rape case.

He, as a hall of fame head football coach, member of the 300-win club, and someone who dines with the local sheriff, seemed to view himself as untouchable. So, the coach knew about the incident and failed to report it to school administrators and the authorities... in an official crime-reporting capacity...

Saccoccia also failed to discipline players who ferried photos of the victim to each other- until week 9 of the regular season. But his actions may have him in front of a grand jury soon...
