Razorbacks QB's Truck Possibly Torched

((HT: KFSM-TV))

The Chevy Avalanche pick-up Razorback back-up QB Brandon Allen drives was burned very early Monday morning. The incident is being investigated as an arson...

The car alarm was going off outside Allen's apartment and he apparently went outside to see it burning, drifting backwards, and roling into a ditch.

Head football coach Bret Bielema, at his weekly press conference, said Allen is fine, and that the school is letting local police handle the case. Bielema also said that Allen will not be speaking publicly about the case.

Strangely, Allen's truck was not the only car fire in Fayetteville early Monday morning...

Here's the story of a burned group of cars...

Richmond Confirms 2 WBB Staffers Dead In Hot Air Balloon Accident

((HT: WTVR-TV))

While the search intensifies for the third victim in a surprising and tragic hot air balloon accident in Richmond, Virginia, the University of Richmond has announced that two women's basketball staffers were among the dead.

Associate head women’s basketball coach Ginny Doyle and director of basketball operations Natalie Lewis were on the balloon that crashed.

The balloon containing Doyle and Lewis struck power lines and caught on fire and the gondola separated from the balloon itself. Two people were seen either falling or jumping from the gondola once it caught on fire and eyewitnesses report hearing people saying:

"Jesus, help us. We're going to die!"

Grief counselors were available on campus and baseball games with St. Bonaventure were cancelled.

"As alumnae, classmates, and colleagues and as invaluable and devoted mentors for our student-athletes Ginny and Natalie have been beloved members of our community,” UR President Edward L. Ayers said in a statement. “Their leadership and friendship will endure in the lives of so many.”

“Words cannot begin to express our sorrow,”
UR Athletic Director Keith Gill said in a statement. “We are all stunned by the tragic news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to their loved ones.”

Here's the presser identifying the second victim

The Virginia State Police are now calling the search for the third victim a recovery mission instead of a rescue mission.

Not How NASCAR Wants The Season To Start

((HT: NASCAR on FOX))

It was the Sprint Unlimited last night at Daytona- where past pole sitters, winners, and such all get together for another payday... and it was an interesting look...

It had almost everything...
Including their pace car catching on fire...

Not quite the JP Montoya-running into a jet dryer-thing, but interesting nonetheless...
And whaddya want to bet that Chevy will be looking into that car...

Then, in the ARCA race... you had a 15-car crash with Buster Graham started that looks like it knocked out half the field...

Denny Hamlin would survive the actual race, but Matt Kenseth took out half of the field here...

Wreckin' is more than rubbin', so we'll see how the 4 Stewart-Haas squads go from here...

PM Grambling UPDATE: No Players, Another New Head Coach

((HT: KSLA-TV))

The flame out of the once-proud Grambling football program is reaching "profound dumpster fire" stage...

Day two of the football players inactivity has reportedly led to the dismissal of interim head coach George Ragsdale and the appointing of new interim head coach Dennis Winston.

The Tigers have traded their OC for their DC. Ragsdale will be reassigned within the athletic department...

Ragsdale was, apparently, on his cell phone calling players this afternoon wondering aloud if they were going to attend practice. The answer was an easy "no" for the squad after meetings this week didn't go well with the administration of the university.

Here's the latest this afternoon...
KSLA News 12 Shreveport, Louisiana News Weather

Sean Isabella of the Monroe (LA) News-Star newspaper caught up with Ragsdale who left campus ten minutes before practice was supposed to begin this afternoon:

"...safety Naquan Smith gave a surprising admission Thursday during a public demonstration by the students.

“As a team, we feel like we wanted (Ragsdale) to actually step down,” Smith said. “(The team) is behind us because they know what we’ve been going through. They know the struggle. We said we’re behind each other 100 percent.”

Ragsdale took the high road and said he still had faith in his team despite the turmoil.

“If that’s what they felt, they wanted me gone,” Ragsdale said. “I loved them whether they wanted me gone or not. Maybe they didn’t like my coaching methods.”

Thursday afternoon campus police had placed barricades up blocking the roads to practice facility before the scheduled 5PM practice. News media were told that they were to leave campus and any players were off limits for interviews...

Grambling is scheduled to play Jackson State this week, and the HQ would love to know what this game is going to look like...

So, Why Does Kirk Ferentz Still Have A Job...???

((HT: WHO-TV))

Because he has a four-million dollar per year deal that has him coaching through 2020

Kirk Ferentz has a contract through January 31, 2020, that pays him between $1.87M and $2.07M per season in base salary, plus another $1.48M per season in "recurring supplemental payments."

He also gets a "longevity bonus" which requires Iowa AD Gary Barta pay him between $325,000 and $575,000 on an escalating scale throughout the balance of his deal...

In the year 2020...

The buyout clause in Kirk Ferentz's contract mandates that Barta pay him 75% of his base salary if he is terminated without cause- $219,142 per month until the contract ends in January 2020.

He is the state's highest paid employee, making $1.4 million more than the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics director Jean Robillard.

Oh, Iowa lost to Northern Illinois yesterday...
Here's the highlights...

So, why is Kirk Ferentz still employed...???

He's too expensive to fire...

Protesters Freak Out French Open (UPDATE)

((HT: NBC))

At 5-1 up in the second set, things started to go a little sideways at the men's final at Roland Garros...

First, some folks sitting in the last row of the upper deck started chanting in between points in the David Ferrer-Rafael Nadal match-up to disturb the peace and the players.

Then, two more protesters (somehow) made their way down through the camera well and one of the made it onto the court itself...
Really freaking out Nadal...

And here...

The starch was taken out of both players for the remainder of the second set and the early part of the third. No word on who is claiming responsibility for the outbursts and the towel on fire, but the HQ's guess is Basque separatists or some other group that was looking for a quick pop on the air...

The first thought of the players on the court had to go back to Monica Seles and her attack by Gunther Parsche- understandably so...

UPDATE: The flares in possession of the protesters started the fire in the tunnel and the protesters in the upper deck supposedly were calling for the protest of French President Francois Hollande

Bradford City To Honor Valley Parade Victims In Cap One Final

((HT: youtube))

League 2 Bradford City has had a run for the ages in the Capital One Cup and they'll go against Swansea for the title.

But they'll have others on their mind when they take to Wembley for the Cup...

Their tracksuit tops will have the number 56 and the words 'Always With Us' embroidered on the front- marking the occasion by remembering the 56 fans who died in the fire at their home stadium, Valley Parade, almost 28 years ago.

Bradford City supporters camped out overnight in the snow last week for tickets and almost 32,000 will get to go to Wembley.

But here's how the event fell out live May 11th, 1985...

Toomer's Oaks Catch On Fire (UPDATED)

As if everything else at the Corner was bad enough...

Apparently, early this morning toilet paper that was hanging from the Oaks caught on fire... and a picture taken by the Associated Press reporter John Zenor showed damage was pretty bad and the base of the tree seems to be "scorched..." according to a Monday article in the War Eagle Reader...

The Auburn Fire Department quickly put the blaze out, and the extent of any damage is unknown at present... not that they haven't been damaged enough or anything like that...(picture right, thanks Alessio Summerfield/Auburn Plainsman)

In the interim, here's video of a family having their kid roll the oaks from yesterday's Alabama A&M win- since it's probably the last time anyone will do it for a while (and before they're removed)

Obviously, this video was taken before 3:20AM local time...

Monday Update: Auburn police are reviewing video to determine the cause...

The University put out an official statement on their Oaks update page...

The Oaks at Toomer's Corner were damaged by fire early Sunday morning. Members of the Trees Task Force examined the trees Monday morning and found significant damage to both oaks and to several plants adjacent to the plaza. The Trees Task Force will post an update about the fire damage next week. The Auburn Police Division is investigating the incident.

According to WTVM-TV in Columbus, Captain Tom Stofer says the Auburn Police Department investigation is still in the early stages; "There weren't a whole lot of people downtown at that time," he says, "which will make our job a little bit easier in reviewing the video."
