Duels At Daytona End In Flames

((HT: NASCAR on FOX))

You had a feeling that, since the first Duel at Daytona was a clean 60-lap race, the second race was going to be messy...

And it was at the end...

Johnson apologized as the initial thoughts were that the 48 ran out of gas, but it seems more like someone got out of line and wobbled Johnson into the heart of the traffic pattern..

It also made for some interesting allowances into the race at Daytona- both Labonte brothers DROVE their way in... and there are seven rookies in the field carrying the yellow back bumper tape...

Race is Sunday...

Not How NASCAR Wants The Season To Start

((HT: NASCAR on FOX))

It was the Sprint Unlimited last night at Daytona- where past pole sitters, winners, and such all get together for another payday... and it was an interesting look...

It had almost everything...
Including their pace car catching on fire...

Not quite the JP Montoya-running into a jet dryer-thing, but interesting nonetheless...
And whaddya want to bet that Chevy will be looking into that car...

Then, in the ARCA race... you had a 15-car crash with Buster Graham started that looks like it knocked out half the field...

Denny Hamlin would survive the actual race, but Matt Kenseth took out half of the field here...

Wreckin' is more than rubbin', so we'll see how the 4 Stewart-Haas squads go from here...

Kurt Busch Channels Cole Trickle And It Is Awesome...

Gotta love owners with a sense of humor...

Jerry Bonkowski at Motor Sports Talk has the story of the weekend from Daytona...

Remember Cole Trickle...???
((HT: Movieclips.com))

Kurt Busch certainly does...
This weekend, the City Chevrolet will be working for the Hendrick teams pit...

And Busch, Hendrick, and crew chief Nick Harrison recited a scene or two for the AFFDC...

Busch is raising awareness for the Armed Forces Foundation "Help Save Our Troops" campaign this weekend.

And the HQ hopes he wins...

Here's the car thanks to @kurtbusch

College Students Invade Daytona 500

((HT: The Coastal Source))

This one comes from FOSG Frank Sulkowski...

Remember the two college kids from Savannah State University that invaded the Roman Numeral Classic, making their way all the way into the tunnels and onto the field...???

Well, they now have episode (or "invasion") number two...

The auto racing event in Daytona...
Here's the edited down version of the exploits of Joseph Roberts and Malachi Youngblood

The HQ still doesn't know what to think about this...

If we were younger, we would probably admire their chutzpah... that's a Yiddish term, look it up...

But nowadays, the HQ's jury is still out on whether or not we like showing that security isn't what people think it is...
When Frank interviews them, we'll put that below...

EA Shuts Down 50 Cent

((HT: NASCAR on Fox))

Don't get The LA Kings Jarrett Stoll mad at you...

And had what happened during the pre-race at Daytona gone full, he would have...

Good dodge by Erin, there...

Hey, it was a pre-race show...
Let the woman do her job...

Gen 6 Gets Their First Big Wreck At Daytona

And it was at the end of the Nationwide race...

Evidence below...
((HT: NASCAR on ESPN))

Regan Smith was dancing with Brad Keselowski and, by the time it was over Kyle Larson went airborne and lost the entire front of his car. Larson, Michael Annett, and eight others were involved in the final lap wreck. There was a 13-car wreck that caused the green-white-checkered after the race had been red flagged..

Tony Stewart survived the melee and won the 300-miler...

Six fans are listed as injured, two of them are considered in critical condition and the damage to the grandstand came from Larson's engine and the fluids coming form other cars involved in the wreck

"The engine came right through the fence, injuring about six people," said a Daytona International Speedway supervisor, speaking under the condition of anonymity to yahoo!Sports.

Here's the NASCAR version of what went down..

DEVELOPING: Danica Gets Daytona Pole (UPDATED)

((HT: NASCAR on FOX))

Fastest in practice... fastest in the race for the pole...

Danica and the #10 car ended up qualifying early and finishing early- good enough for a little history...

Here's the run...

196.43 miles per hour gets her up front knocking off her boss in the series, Tony Stewart...

“It would be really nice, it’s a very big pole out of all of them during the year for attention and especially for GoDaddy. … That’s who that helps the most,’’ Patrick said before pole qualifying. “There are other races throughout the year that as a driver you feel more proud of yourself to get, but this is a whole team effort. I don’t give much credit to myself for driving and turning left; it’s very much about the car and the engine.

“The pole at Daytona is very much a team goal. I think being fastest on the chart, being fast in general just shows everybody else how serious (crew chief) Tony Gibson is with his guys and he wants to get me a pole and do absolutely everything he can.”

She was on the pole for Nationwide Series racing last season, but now it's an entirely different ballgame...
Jeff Gordon qualified second...

How's that for an "Oh, by the way..."

Here's the reaction... which is understandable...

Day 1 At Daytona= Wreck One

((HT: NASCAR on Speed))

What the HQ used to call the Clash is now something called the Unlimited...

We don't know if the ground rules are the same or not, but they're practicing at Daytona for the 500 mile race next Sunday.
Which, of course, means that big drivers may end up damaging their new paint schemes...

Matt Kenseth would be the guilty one there...

Here's the crash that took out Montoya, Martin, Kurt Busch, and Edwards...

"That was 100 percent driver error, my driver error," Kenseth said when asked about it afterwards. "I had no idea anybody was there and he had a run at the same time and I came down in front of him and he couldn't get slowed up from staying out of me. It was a hundred percent my fault."

So, the Car of Tomorrow is yesterday and we're now with Gen 6...

When Did Daytona Turn Into Talladega...???

((HT: FoxSports/Speed))

With the new cars, models, and aero packages available for the race at Daytona in a few weeks drivers and their new sponsors and owners got to kick the tires over the weekend...

But when you kick the tires, you run the risk of bumping into each other...

Evidence below among a lot of big names...

The money quote to Fox Sports Lee Spencer came from Brad Keselowski who said it was “unfortunate, but sometimes you got to wreck 'em to learn.”

There's that...

Stewart Comes From 42nd To Win Daytona

((HT: NASCAR/TNT))

The HQ had a feeling that the Daytona race would be kinda funky...

In a race where Bill Elliott (yes, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville) qualified 6th and Casey Mears and his bar-be-que sauce recipe qualified 7th, Tony Stewart came from 42nd to win the race Saturday night.

Stewart overcame two wrecks in the final 8 laps for the win- his third of the year to date that solidified his place in the late season dash for the title and a chance to repeat as the sport's number one driver...

Here's the highlights, thanks to FoxSports

No word yet on AJ Allmendinger and his temporary suspension, and you can catch more of the race in full hyah (thanks, NASCAR.com)

Danica's Daytona Experience Doesn't Start Well...

((HT: NASCAR/ESPN))

It's not cool when a teammate does it to you...

And that's what JR Motorsports' Cole Whitt did on Lap 49 of the Saturday race at Daytona. Danica Patrick started on the pole and got some seat time with owner Dale Earnhardt, Junior in draft behind her for the first few laps.

But as is the want of the race and the track, she sorted drivers out and shuffled them every which-a-way. Patrick was no different drifting as far back as the mid-20's in the pack.

And, then, depression set in, thanks to Whitt...

Here's the spin out from and the aftermath...

Sufficed to say that in-car communication had to be bleeped and edited for content... thanks, MotorSportsCentral and TSN2

Danica, Shawna... Shawna, Danica...

((HT: ESPN/NASCAR))

For the first time since Shawna Robinson picked up the pole at Atlanta MOtor Speedway in 1994, Danica Patrick knocked Sam Hornish, Junior off the top spot for the Nationwide Series race at Daytona.

Here's your analysis from the desk...

She is scheduled to drive 10 Sprint Cup races for Stewart-Haas Racing and run every Nationwide race for JR Motorsports ths year- talk about having a split ownership loyalty...

She makes her Sprint Cup debut in the Daytona 500 after eating the wall at 180-miles per hour in the Twin 150's races Thursday afternoon.

She has three top-10 finishes in 25 Nationwide races over two years, so now that she's up front it'll be interesting to see who plays ball with her and if she has any friends on the track - AT ANY TIME...

Jus' sayin...

Daytona: Danica Gets Crashed In 150-Miler

((HT: MT89MotorsportMedia/NASCAR/NASCAR Images/Speed))

Welcome to auto racing, and thank NASCAR for putting in SAFIR barriers when Danica Patrick needed them...

Here's the last part of the race where Danica got introduced to them...

Aric Almirola was bumped by Jamie McMurray and it all led to Patrick's hard crash. But the HQ will give the driver credit for taking her hands off the wheel- using her open-wheel prowess to keep from getting her wrists broken...

The 500-miler is Sunday in Daytona...

NASCAR Shootout Ends Up With People On The Roof Again...

And this time it was Jeff Gordon...

When you only have 25 cars going after a big purse and there are only a few laps left in the event- you know that all bets are off, your friend is not your friend and you better drive for you and everyone else...

The remaining guys in last night's 75-lapper from Daytona didn't get the message...
Here's the short version of the whole thing...

Dale Junior Still Hates Daytona

((HT: ESPN))

He's made no secret about it, but when asked what his favorite race track was on the eve of the Firecracker 400 at Daytona, Dale Earnhardt, Junior said something of the equivalent of: "the race after Daytona..."

He, basically, says the butt-buck racing style that has to succeed there isn't racing, and it's actually weird...

He was a little more colorful after the race Saturday night...

The HQ agrees... Daytona is boring and we sat through the whole thing waiting for what went down in the last ten laps...

If you don't have the horses, you'll finish where you oughta...
Have at it, boys...
