Oh my gawd. This is the funniest thing we've seen all day. And it makes a very strong point as well.
WJW-TV in Cleveland sent one of their on air personalities, 'Lil Jon Rinaldi to Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis's Wednesday press conference.
The reason for Rinaldi being there: Lewis's comments to a radio station on Monday calling Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel a midget.
Manziel we might add; stands 6 feet tall.
The 4 ft 3 Rinaldi, a well know personality in the Cleveland area asked Lewis a couple of questions in the presser, both prefaced by comments about height.
To his credit, Lewis did not bite, answering the question in purely football technical terms.
Wow! Strong statement by the TV station there. And honestly, it's a different perspective coming from Rinaldi.
Mind you Lewis has apologized for his comments and said repeatedly he did not intend to offend anyone with them.
Still, this is a possible "Troll of the Year" candidate...

Long Live UAB Football: President Kills Program- The Press Conference
((HT: MyFoxAlabama/WBRC-TV))
So, as it turns out, it wasn't JUST football...
To satisfy Title IX guidelines, it is football, rifle, and bowling that are going away at Alabama-Birmingham.
President Ray Watts came in through a back door and had this press conference
Players were involved in a heated discussion with President Watts and UAB VP of Finance G. Allen Bolton, Jr. and Watts was cussed at when he exited the fieldhouse where they gave their dissertation.
Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowsky released a statement:
“We are aware of the study but disappointed with the decision to discontinue the sport of football at UAB, particularly because of its effect on the lives of the student-athletes and coaches that have worked so hard to restore the quality of the program. We don't fully understand the decision, nor agree with it, but do respect it and the authority of the UAB Administration to make it.
As a conference, we will move forward in our pursuit of excellence in athletics and academics, with the primary goal of providing a positive educational experience for all of our 5,000 student-athletes. Our universities have invested in athletics, and in facilities to support athletics, and are focused on their student-athletes and the contribution college athletics makes on their campuses and in their communities.
UAB has been a contributing member to the Conference since its inception and has expressed a strong interest in remaining a member, a topic that the Conference's Board of Directors will take up in the months ahead. The Conference's current bylaws require all members to sponsor football.”
Head coach Bill Clark released a written statement:
"This is one of the most difficult days that I have had to endure in my personal as well as my coaching career.
I am absolutely heartbroken for my players and my assistant coaches. These coaches and players have done a tremendous job and have worked extremely hard for this university, to achieve six wins and be bowl eligible.
I want to pay a special tribute to our many loyal fans for all the support hey have given us this season and especially, during these last few challenging weeks.
Sometimes we as people do not understand why certain things happen; however my faith tells me that God has a plan for the lives of our players, my coaching staff, and for me and my family.
I am grateful for the opportunity I have had here at UAB and making so many new relationships during my time here.
There is no doubt in my mind that we were in the process of building something special at UAB. This goes further than our football program, the athletics department, or the university as a whole. This team is Birmingham - we represent Birmingham and this community.
It is unfortunate that it has come to this. But again, it is a decision that has been reached and I must respect it and will move forward.
Thank you Birmingham and the UAB Community for everything you have done for our players, this coaching staff and me personally."
The issue now for UAB is to find a conference that will accept them without football- and that will be an interesting quest.

Coach Boom Started His Presser This Way Yesterday
((HT: CoachingSearch.com))
Yep, he actually did this...
((HT: Tampa Bay Times))
And, in a lot of ways, he's probably right...
If he wins out, he can be a pain in the Ess-E-Cee East and his (and Jeremy Foley's) job are safe for another week...
While Florida fans are actually going to deal with the confusion of success and, simultaneously, being stuck...
Enjoy...

Ever See A Walk-Of Presser...???
((HT: ABC Columbia))
The OBC had a 14-point lead at home against Tennessee last night...
It didn't last as Joshua Dobbs hooked up with Jason Croom and Tennessee had a monstrous fourth quarter to send the game to overtime.
In the fifth quarter, the Vols kicked a field goal, the Gamecocks went backwards and lost 45-42.
All that caused what is, probably, the shortest Steve Spurrier press conference ever...
Makes you wonder if this week of prep will be one the players at Sakerlina will not like at all...

Jimbo Fisher Does Not Like Jameis Winston Questions, Then He Answers Them Anyway...
((HT: al.com, Crenshaw/Lost Letterman))
This is what the HQ calls an interview that is cut short...
The All-In head coach was supposed to speak to Birmingham's Monday Morning Quarterback Club.
The HQ has no idea why Fisher would think that questions would be about other things besides what is in and around his program that have happened recently.
But Fisher got hot under the collar and prematurely ejected...
Later that same morning, he went under another round of questions and admitted that "if the facts change" he will consider discplining his quarterback...
Props to Solomon Crenshaw for the response. Obviously, someone in garnet and gold got to Fisher and explained how the pee-ahr of the walk-out wouldn't go over well if that was the last image stuck in Birmingham media.

And Now Sean Payton Loses His Cool...
((HT: The Big Lead/WVUE/@TylerBouldin))
Sean Payton has every right to be bent out of shape over how the Detroit Lions scored twice in the last 4:30 and came from behind to beat Payton's New Orleans Saints.
So, this happened in the Payton presser when someone asked a question
Yeah, it was a game they should have won and that is what happens more than not...
The frustration levels are on the increase...
Bears, Saints, and who is next...???
Especially when you're 2-4 in a winnable division...

And The Vikings Continue To Say Everything By Doing Nothing (UPDATED W/Reax)
((HT: KARE-TV))
Let's face it...
NFL owners only want to hide behind their underlings in cases of perpetual dumpster fires...
Like what's going on in Minnesota with the Vikings...
Early this morning, the team without a whole lot of fanfare, decided to put Adrian Peterson on something called the "exempt" list until his legal problems are taken care of in Texas.
This morning, local time, the Wilfs, GM Rick Spielman, and Vikings legal counsel Kevin Warren almost answered questions with the local media. Their mantra seemed to be "just wanting to move on" instead of answering about the lack of response and waffling when the team did respond to what was going on in Peterson's personal life.
Here's the presser in its entirety...
The HQ knows of three other cases involving Vikings players where the team took immediate disciplinary action- none of them were of the star power of Peterson- which speaks volumes to the lack of enforcement (and consistent enforcement). Zygi Wilf read a statement and took no questions... The HQ remains stunned... Immediately after the presser aired, Adam Schein went off (like most sports talk hosts around the country, the HQ is sure) on his "Schein on Sports" program on Mad Dog Sports Radio ((HT: SiriusXM/Mad Dog Sports Radio))

Rex Ryan Has Fun At His Presser
((HT: NJ.com))
The HQ gives New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan a lot of pre-season credit for taking it for at the level of seriousness it should be taken at (to end a sentence in a preposition)...
He decided to, literally, turn the tables on the New York area media by sending ESPN New York's Rich Cimini from his seat at the presser to Ryan's normal space behind the lectern.
And Ryan got to ask the questions for a change...
Sense of humor...
The HQ completely digs it...

Goodell Defends League Stance On Ray Rice
((HT: NFL/ESPN))
The Commissioner of the National Football League was pinned into a scrum at the NFL Hall of Fame weekend and was asked about the action the league took involving the 2-game suspension of Ravens running back Ray Rice.
See if you believe his answer
So, dear reader/watcher/listener...
What say you...???
Do you agree or disagree with the Commish...???

Ray Rice Had A Presser: Believe At Your Own Peril, Deford Goes After Goodell's Handling Of It
((HT: CSNBaltimore.com))
Here's his sound bite on how he will be an advocate on domestic violence issues with his wife, Janay...
If this had come sooner, and not in the pee-ahr dumpster fire that is the Baltimore Ravens, there might be a little more credibility here. But the HQ is not really holding its breath on this one...
The greatest hits:
He apologized to his wife
He claimed that he did not have a domestic violence issue before February
He would not go into detail as to what actually went down in the elevator in the moments before the security camera video picks up the two of them pouring out of the elevator
He apologized to any woman who has faced a violent situation
He would not have appealed the suspension- no matter how long it was
But Frank Deford of NPR's "Morning Edition" brought up an interesting tack on the future of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell- basically asking for his head- in his Wednesday commentary.
In part:
Goodell's sideswipe of a punishment to Ray Rice indicates, if nothing else, a cultural ignorance on his part. Remember, this is the businessman who is widely compared to a tobacco executive for so long procrastinating, denying the effects of obvious occupational concussions, a promoter who hanged a good health of his fungible players, even now wants more Thursday games and a longer regular-season schedule. But the NFL is the biggest boon this side of the Internet, so Goodell is cocooned by his ever-richer owners and a phalanx of admiring football reporters. The networks, his breathless partners, are simply bootlickers. The exalted NFL so needs a rector, a magistrate who comes to the game, not from within it. It needs a leader of grace and vision. More and more, Roger Goodell just looks like a slick, selling us 76 trombones.

Big XII Commish Thinks Enforcement System Is Broken
((HT: Big XII Conference/dpost.com))
And the HQ is inclined to agree with him...
Across the board, Big 12 Commish Bob Bowlsby thinks schools aren't being penalized in a timely fashion and the enforcement system that the NCAA is using is "broken."
Cheating pays, Bowlsby says, and he would even be amenable to private investigators looking at enforcing the rules and laws of the NCAA. Bowlsby also admits that not all schools cheat, but those who do can get away with it fairly easily.
Here's his pipebomb in its entirety this morning

Usually, when the HQ is at a sporting event, we're paying attention to what's going on so we can report what's going on...

Coach Interrupts Stamkos Presser With Q-and-A
((HT: Sportsnet))
Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos had to answer all those questions about "How ya feelin'?" since the knee in the back of the head he received last night in Game 3 of their playoff series with the Montreal Canadiens.
Stamkos got a special guest in his scrum...
And a "Seinfeld" reference, too...

Looks Like Mike Gillis Gives Himself One More Year
((HT: Sportsnet))
The trade the HQ talked about behind the bench before the New York Rangers-Vancouver Canucks game involving Alain Vigneault and John Tortorella has now moved from the idiot stage to the stage where it looks like Torts is on a short clock.
Daniel Sedin has done the captainly thing and taken blame for the season that has gone sideways. Injuries have played a big part of it as they've made a 6-point hole for themselves in the wild card with five games to go.
It isn't looking good for GM Mike Gillis, but as GM's can do... they can blame others before they take the blame themselves. A coaching change will move things along a season at a time as a last ditch move.
But it will only buy Gillis a year with the Aquilini brothers...
Dan Murphy discusses with "Hockey Central"

Saul Phillips Personifies What This Tourney Is All About...
((HT: NDSU Athletics))
Some of us had North Dakota State in our picks for the early part of the tournament...
A lot of you did not...
But it's "teams" that do well early on if they get the chance to hang around against higher seeds, and the Bison did that beating Oklahoma.
Along with teams like Mercer, Dayton, and Stephen F. Austin, it has reminded us what makes this month one of the best 30-day stretches in the calendar year (see Brother Phil's ode hyah to reinforce the theory)
But, no, the Bison didn't make it past their match-up with San Diego State to go further. But we will remember the Basketball Bison for a lot of reasons- head coach Saul Phillips' exultation after the first win is only a part of it. It's his remembrance i=of this first weekend that's a big part of it...

Defoe, Bradley Introduced In Toronto
((HT: Sportsnet))
With Tim Leiweke taking over at MLSE for everything MLSE- including Toronto FC's woeful on-field status- they needed to make some kind of a splash in the MLS marketplace...
And the HQ thinks that the league getting Michael Bradley for US$10-million and bringing in Tottenham's Jermain Defoe certainly qualifies...
But, for those of you who understand this kind of thing, just because you sign stars doesn't mean instant success...
The LA Galaxy brought in Donovan and Beckham, but they needed a Juninho, a Keane, and a Ricketts to fill in the holes around them. That's the task ahead for TFC...
Here's Defoe's introduction...
"I have never been more excited, and more motivated, for any challenge in my career,” Bradley said at the press conference. “What they’re trying to build here is really special, something really unique and different from anywhere else in MLS and North American soccer.”
After seven straight losing seasons, it better be special...
Defoe will remain with Spurs until March 1 before joining the club. Bradley is expected to part in the club’s pre-season preparations, and TFC opens the 2014 MLS regular season March 15 at Seattle.
