Ohio St QB Barrett Being Investigated by Police in Dispute

((ht: buckeyextra.dispatch.com))

Well, it's never a good thing to have to report on an athlete being investigated by police. And while injured Ohio State QB J.T Barrett has yet to be charged with anything, he is being investigated and the evidence doesn't sound so good.

Police were called to Barrett's apartment Tuesday night after 9-1-1 calls from both him and his ex-girlfriend. Needless to say, the two accounts of what was going on differed a bit.

Barrett's call was him basically saying he wanted his 19-year old ex-girlfriend out of his house. While her call she claimed she had a domestic violence account. She said Barrett choked her and threw her across the room and that she was pregnant.

Barrett apparently told police later in the evening that she ran at him, pushed and swung at him and he just pushed her away.

Uh oh...

We hope this is much ado about nothing. Barrett was a revelation to the Buckeyes this football season. But this does not sound very good.

With the attention given to domestic violence issues, if indeed Barrett did what he is accused of by his ex-girlfriend, he's in a lot of trouble. And he should be.

But the investigation is not compete.

The Columbus Dispatch has the 9-1-1 Calls. Listen and decide for yourself...

Dwyer Formally Charged With Hitting His Wife

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer has been charged with 9 counts- involving assaulting his wife in two separate incidents in July. The final tally is felony aggravated assault and eight misdemeanors, including assault, criminal damage and disorderly conduct.

Investigators say Dwyer broke his wife's nose with a head-butt during the first argument and he allegedly punched his wife and threw a shoe at his 17-month-old son the next day.

Dwyer was booked September 17th on "suspicion of aggravated assault" against his son, but the indictment didn't have any charges related to any incident with him- just the nine with his wife.

Police in the Phoenix area also think that the first incident involving Dwyer and his wife centered around the notion that she didn't like apparent contact between Dwyer and another woman.

Lester Munson discusses the legal stuff

The next hearing involving Dwyer is set for October 6th in Phoenix.

Now, It's Jonathan Dwyer's Turn To Face Police On Domestic Abuse/Assault Charges

((HT: KTAR Radio/ABC15))

We now have another football player in trouble with the law... this time in Phoenix...

Arizona Cardinals' running back Jonathan Dwyer was arrested after allegations of domestic abuse against his wife from late July on back-to-back days. According to KTAR Radio the incidents happened like this:

"In the first, Kayla sustained a fracture. In the second incident, Dwyer allegedly threw a shoe at the couple's 18-month-old son."

Phoenix police say Dwyer was charged with "one count of aggravated assault causing a fracture, one count of aggravated assault involving a minor, two counts of criminal damage and 1 count of preventing the use of a phone in an emergency and assault."

Police maintain that after the two incidents in dispute, Dwyer's wife and 18-month-old child left the state of Arizona. Kayla Dwyer, apparently, called Phoenix police a week ago alleging Jonathan Dwyer tweeted her a photo of a knife and threatened to harm himself if she contacted the police.

According to Phoenix police when he was interviewed, Dwyer admitted to the incidents in late July, but denied any assaults of his wife and child.

Here's the early reports from Phoenix
((HT: KTVK-TV))
Here's the statement from the team after Dwyer was escorted from their training facility: "Given the serious nature of the allegations we have taken the immediate step to deactivate Jonathan from all team activities." Team officials also said they will closely monitor the situation."

Greg Hardy To Be Put On Exempt List

While the Ray Rice saga garnered most of the headlines last week, the NFL's other significant domestic abuse case had all but gone unnoticed.

Not until Rice made headlines and the NFL botched there handling of it, did many people take notice of Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy's conviction back in July.

Hardy played in the 1st game of the season for the Panthers, but after the events of last week, the Panthers pulled him from the lineup at the last minute on Sunday.

With his status in limbo, the team announced Wednesday afternoon they would place Hardy on the Exempt list. Which in essence puts him on paid leave until his issues are resolved (much like Adrian Peterson).

Hardy, while pleading guilty to the July charges, decided to appeal that decision and take the case to trial. That trial has not been scheduled yet. According to North Carolina law, since the original case was heard only by a judge, he can appeal and the trial must be heard by a jury.

In the meantime, he is not allowed to play or practice with his team, though he is allowed to be at the teams facilities in Charlotte.

No timetable has been given for his return, though team G.M Dave Gettleman did say that it won't be until the legal process is finished.

In case you haven't seen it, here's the saga of Mr. Hardy:

Family: Brandon Marshall Abused Daughter and Not Investigated by NFL

We aren't quite sure what to make of this.

In light of the NFL's worst week ever and the domestic abuse problems that Ray Rice and others have shown on the league, there may be more.

The family of Rasheedah Watley came forward with noted lawyer Gloria Allred in Atlanta Wednesday afternoon charging Roger Goodell, the NFL and the Denver Broncos (team at the time) essentially let receiver Brandon Marshall off easy after a long history of abusing Watley. He also spoke about a letter he sent to the NFL and how they essentially did not respond to him.

Along with the family, a friend Kristeena Spivey came out and spoke of an incident in 2009 where Marshall is alleged to have rammed her car and threw a concrete brick through the windshield. Marshall had initially been suspended for 3 games, that suspension was reduced to 1 game.

Watley's father Clarence spoke at length about the history between his daughter and Marshall dating back to Marshall's time at UCF in 2006 and supposedly dating back as far as the 8th grade.

Pro Football Talk reminds us what happened in 2009 RIGHT HERE

It should be noted, in 2009, Watley and Marshall's lawyers exchanged e-mails asking for 6-figures to make this all go away and not press charges.

The whole sordid affair was part of an ESPN Outside the Lines episode back in 2009.

For her part, Allred and Watley's father are calling for Roger Goodell's head. For which they can add their names to the list. The question that many people have today though is: Why bring this up now?

Is it the timing?

We don't dispute that Marshall may have done some horrible things and deserved to be punished more effectively 5-years ago. But he wasn't. And Allred and the Watley's may have a legitimate beef here, we don't doubt that either. If Marshall did what he was alleged to do at that time, he most definitely deserved a stiffer penalty. And yeah, more than likely, the NFL didn't handle it well. It's now been documented as to how bad they've handled domestic violence cases in the past.

But why bring it up now?

There have been multiple opportunities to discuss this, to bring it up in the open over the years, before and after this incident took place. And it wasn't. Unfortunately, while a horrible issue that should have been addressed at the time wasn't, bringing it up TODAY smacks of opportunism.

Allred says it's about what the NFL should do in the future.

There are no charges filed here and there are no investigations involved. So why are we now talking about this today? It smells an awful lot like the set-up to a lawsuit.

NFL's Worst Week Ever: Finally The Panthers Deactivate Greg Hardy

In midst of perhaps the worst PR week in NFL history, one more event transpired on Sunday.

After catching flak from all sides, the Carolina Panthers deactivated star Defensive End Greg Hardy for their game against the Detroit Lions.

We and multiple other blogs and outlets have questioned why Hardy was still playing despite his conviction for domestic violence against his then girlfriend. Particularly in light of this past weeks situation with former Baltimore Raven Ray Rice.

Yet the Panthers took the spin "Let the legal system run its course".

Huh?

Yes, Hardy is appealing his conviction, but that never changed the fact HE WAS CONVICTED. And yes, his appeal will be heard by a jury instead of him pleading out to a judge.

But it changes nothing.

It's been a horrible week for the league between Rice, the Adrian Peterson situation and now this. Yet the Panthers never saw anything wrong with their decision.

To their credit, the Vikings upon receiving word of Peterson's indictment, deactivated him. Which was the proper response. That should have been a hint to the Panthers.

If Hardy wins his appeal, then yeah, sure, let him play. But until then, in light of unfolding events, how can you keep someone convicted of domestic violence on your roster.

That last sentence alone explains why the NFL is in the predicament it currently is.

NFL and Domestic Violence: Greg Hardy is Still Playing--Why?

With all the hubbub this week having to do with the almost buffonish handling of the Ray Rice case by the NFL, another player with domestic violence issues seems to be skating by unnoticed.

Greg Hardy, star defensive end for the Carolina Panthers is slated to be in the starting lineup yet again this week vs. San Francisco.

That wouldn't be a big deal except Hardy was CONVICTED this summer for assaulting his girlfriend. The story was reported by us and many other outlets back in July, but since then no discernible disciplinary action has ever been taken by the Panthers....or the NFL.

Yes, Panther fans, we know Hardy is "appealing" the ruling, but that is not likely to work. And there is NO reason Hardy should not have been disciplined.

Hardy's issues began when he beat up his girlfriend back in May. Reports at the time (and later confirmed) say he hit the woman and threw her into a bathtub. He then continued assaulting her, eventually throwing her on a couch covered in assault rifles. She at that time began begging for her life before police arrived.

Read an early description of the event RIGHT HERE

Yet in spite of all this, the Panthers haven't done anything to Hardy. He played in the season opener and was featured because he painted his face before running out on the field. He is preparing to play in game 2 and in light of the events this week, all the Panthers can say is they are waiting for the legal process to play out.

What? He's already been convicted.

Here is the spin from Carolina, where more has been made of owner Jerry Richardson's tearful statement that he's built an "Organization of Integrity". Yet it doesn't answer any of the questions.

Here is the spin in Charlotte on this issue from WSOC-TV:

Sorry guys, this doesn't justify anything--

How Hardy plays in light of what happened with Rice is mystifying. And yet nobody is paying any attention to it. Rice grabs the headlines because of the video and yet this case is equally messed up. If the NFL wants to be taken seriously (which we wonder about), Hardy needs to be sat down.

ESPN's Steve Delsohn takes a much deeper and more even look at what actually happened. Watch it and then you'll understand why the message here is so mixed:

Roger Goodell: Calls For His Head Increasing Fast (UPDATED)

((Ed Note--This was written before the breaking news late Wednesday that Law Enforcement officials tell the Associated Press they sent the NFL a copy of the video in question back in April. Source is not yet apparent, but this does not look good))

So, we can now add the National Organization for Women to the list of outside the NFL groups and writers calling for the resignation of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in the wake of the Ray Rice scandal.

And they make a fairly good argument quite honestly.

The group (NOW) issued a press release on their website stalking about the issues currently facing the league.

---The arrest of 49ers DT Ray McDonald who is playing while facing domestic violence charges.
---Greg Hardy of the Panthers, who is playing after being convicted of choking his ex-girlfriend and threatening to kill her
--The latest circus surrounding Cowboys owner Jerry Jones who is being accused of sexually assaulting a woman.

NOW says "The only workable solution is for Roger Goodell to resign, and for his successor to appoint an independent investigator with full authority to gather factual data about domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking within the NFL community and to recommend real and lasting reforms."

Read the entire release from NOW RIGHT HERE

Multiple Sports columnists in TV, Newspaper and on the web have been highly critical of the commissioner who essentially has pled innocence to knowing about the TMZ/Casino elevator tape showing Ray Race sucker punching his now wife Janay.

We won't get to the tape anymore, because the story is now what did the NFL know? And did they just pretend this issue would go away?

For their part, the NFL Owners have come out and said Goodell is safe. But how will they react the next time a big issue comes up?

Everyone brings up the line Goodell used on the New Orleans Saints last year "Ignorance of what's going on within your organization is no excuse". How does he stand now issuing the same line?

Not well. In the grand scheme of things, yeah, sure, most people are appalled about what happened with the Rice incident and they should be. And you can argue there's a segment of the population that is tired of Athletes, mostly pros, getting preferential treatment when they do something stupid. Which happens in the NFL, a lot.

But to make the argument there's an overwhelming public outcry is probably an overstatement. The guy giving up 6-months of pay for seasons tickets doesn't care as long as his team wins. And as long as the TV ratings continue skyrocketing while the revenue pot grows every year, the league won't be in a hurry to do something drastic.

That being said, to a lot of people who do pay attention to such things, they (The NFL) are running out of "Get out of Jail Free" cards. Right, wrong or otherwise, the perception is they have a crime problem and now are willing to overlook things.

At some point, maybe not today, but soon...it's going to catch up to them.

((NOTE--The Ravens, albeit a little late, admitted on Tuesday that they made a big mistake not pursuing the video harder than they did and taking Rice at his word. Again, it's late, but at least the team and owner Steve Bisciotti are willing to fess up to it. Still waiting on you NFL...))

In case you missed it, here again is the Jolly Roger defending himself by pleading ignorance on the CBS Morning show...who in a fortuitous bit of timing, just happen to start broadcasting Thursday night NFL games this week, with the now Rice-less Ravens playing.

Niners McDonald Out On Bail

((HT: KGO-TV))

We now have the first test for NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell's new stance on domestic violence...

San Francisco 49ers DL Ray McDonald is out on $25,000 bail after being charged with felony domestic violence in an overnight incident with his (apparently) pregnant girlfriend. The case is now going to the Santa Clara County DA's Office.

Here's the latest on the newest incident that confirms nothing good ever happens after 1AM or so...

San Francisco 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke released a statement:

"The 49ers organization is aware of the recent reports regarding Ray McDonald and we take such matters seriously. As we continue to gather the facts, we will reserve further comment."

But the most interesting piece of irony seems to be that McDonald was arrested in the same house that now-suspended DE Aldon Smith allegedly partied before getting arrested on DUI charges last month after getting into an accident.

McDonald is due in court for his next appearance September 15.

Ray Rice Had A Presser: Believe At Your Own Peril, Deford Goes After Goodell's Handling Of It

((HT: CSNBaltimore.com))

Here's his sound bite on how he will be an advocate on domestic violence issues with his wife, Janay...

If this had come sooner, and not in the pee-ahr dumpster fire that is the Baltimore Ravens, there might be a little more credibility here. But the HQ is not really holding its breath on this one...

The greatest hits:

He apologized to his wife

He claimed that he did not have a domestic violence issue before February

He would not go into detail as to what actually went down in the elevator in the moments before the security camera video picks up the two of them pouring out of the elevator

He apologized to any woman who has faced a violent situation

He would not have appealed the suspension- no matter how long it was

But Frank Deford of NPR's "Morning Edition" brought up an interesting tack on the future of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell- basically asking for his head- in his Wednesday commentary.

In part:

Goodell's sideswipe of a punishment to Ray Rice indicates, if nothing else, a cultural ignorance on his part. Remember, this is the businessman who is widely compared to a tobacco executive for so long procrastinating, denying the effects of obvious occupational concussions, a promoter who hanged a good health of his fungible players, even now wants more Thursday games and a longer regular-season schedule. But the NFL is the biggest boon this side of the Internet, so Goodell is cocooned by his ever-richer owners and a phalanx of admiring football reporters. The networks, his breathless partners, are simply bootlickers. The exalted NFL so needs a rector, a magistrate who comes to the game, not from within it. It needs a leader of grace and vision. More and more, Roger Goodell just looks like a slick, selling us 76 trombones.

Listen to it all here

John Harbaugh Stands Behind Ray Rice

((HT: CSN Washington))

Here's the sound bite in full where the Ravens head coach says he stands behind his running back in light of the two game suspension the NFL gave Ray Rice after his violation of the league conduct policy.

Rice and his then-fiancee/now wife, Janay, were involved in a physical altercation February 15th at an Atlantic City casino. Rice was shown on surveillance tape from inside the casino physically assaulting Janay and dragging her out of an elevator by her hair.

Rice was charged with aggravated felony assault, but avoided jail time by doing a pre-trial diversion program.
They both met NFL commissioner Roger Goodell four months later at the league office in New York City.

Good to know that you can either smoke something or take something illegal and get a longer suspension than smacking your significant other around and having it seen on video tape.

Fantastic standards to work by...

Solo Pleads Not Guilty To Domestic Violence Charge

((HT: KING5-TV))

Hope Solo plead not guilty to two counts of 4th degree assault after her arrest over the weekend. According to court records, Solo came to the home where her half sister lives, because she was "upset about the fact that her husband refused to take her to catch a flight because he was being a jerk."

Her husband is former Seattle Seahawks tight end Jerramy Stevens.

Allegedly, Solo had drunk a lot of wine and started insulting her nephew. The fight escalated to the point that Solo is accused of striking the nephew multiple times and even struck her half-sister.

From Chris Daniels' article:

The nephew admitted to police that he used a wooden broom and "broke it over her head to get her to stop assaulting" his mother, and at one point even waved an old BB gun in Solo's face to get her to leave the home. He said Solo would not leave and kept "circling like a shark."

Daniels was outside the courtroom for his live shot
Solo's next appearance in court is set for August 11th.

Cunningham's girlfriend did not require medical treatment when police arrived.

Cunningham was charged with a felony count of domestic assault by strangulation with bail set at $40,000.

Here's the morning update
KMSP-TV

The Minnesota Timberwolves organization takes the matter very seriously and does not condone the type of behavior that is associated with this situation. However, we need to let the legal process run its course, and will have further comment at the appropriate time."

Search Continues For Mike Williams' Brother After Stabbing

((HT: MyFoxTampaBay))

We have, the HQ is sure, all had run-ins with siblings...

Maybe, we've been shot at with BB guns or had to be pushed out of a tree or something...

But this one is a little new...

Tampa Bay Bucs receiver Mike Williams was stabbed in the thigh and the suspect is still on the loose...

His brother...

Here's the overnight report...
FOX 13 News

The Bucs reaction is understandably tepid:

"We are aware of the situation that occurred at the residence of Mike Williams and are working with him and the authorities to get additional information. While we have limited knowledge at this time, our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of all involved. We will refrain from further comment until we can get a better understanding of the situation."

Keith Morelli's coverage for tbo.com is hyah and he caught up with first-year GM Jason Licht:

“We’ve reached out to Mike; we’ve yet to hear from him,” said Licht, contacted Monday at the NFL owners’ meetings in Orlando. “From what I understand, he’s been treated and released, so that’s a good start. We’re trying to gather all the facts we can. We’ve reached out, but we have not spoken with him yet.

“We’re disappointed just that we had a player in that situation that could have been seriously injured. ... I don’t know any other facts right now. We do want to find out how he is health-wise and also what his mindset is.”

Williams signed a 6-year, $40-million contract at the beginning of the 2013 season...

Ray Rice... It's Up To You...

((HT: WBAL-TV/TMZ Sports))

As Peter King put it on his Twitter feed:

In other news, Ray Rice had better have one heck of an explanation for Atlantic City.

Eloquence in simplicity there...

Here's what the folks over at TMZ Sports have from Rice and his fiancee's incident in Atlantic City...

The bottom line...

Rice and his fiancee, Janay Palmer, were in the Revel Casino in Atlantic City and were involved in some kind of physical "altercation" around 3AM Saturday. Rice, allegedly, struck Palmer at one point rendering her unconscious. Rice and Palmer were charged with simple assault-domestic violence and were both released on a summons to appear in court.

The above video released by TMZ is the end of the incident...

This from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office:

"The domestic violence incident in Atlantic City involving Ray Rice has been referred to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office for review. The Atlantic City Police Department has requested the Prosecutor’s Office review the case to ensure all appropriate charges are considered. The matter remains under investigation by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office in conjunction with the Atlantic City Police Department. At the present time, Mr. Rice remains charged with simple assault, a disorderly person's offense."

The Ravens and Ozzie Newsome are letting the legal system do their thing.

Here's the complaint, thanks to ABC2 in Baltimore...

Varlamov Turns Himself In On Domestic Violence Charge (UPDATED)

((HT: KUSA-TV))

Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov turned himself in to Denver Police detectives for domestic violence related charges.

Varlamov has been charged with third-degree assault (a Colorado Class 1 felony) and second-degree kidnapping (a Colorado Class 4 felony) from an incident Tuesday with someone whom he had an "intimate relationship."

Denver Police are saying Varlamov turned himself in around 6 p.m. local time. He is in the Denver County jail with no bond (since you can't bond out on assault charges in Colorado), and will be in court Thursday morning.

The Avalanche sent out a statement:

"The Colorado Avalanche organization is aware of the allegations concerning Semyon Varlamov. At this time, and until the conclusion of this investigation, the Avalanche organization will have no further comment on this situation."

From Ryan Parker and Nick Groke at the Denver Post:

The kidnapping charge is a Class 4 felony, punishable by to two to six years in prison, according Colorado statutes. Class 4 felony kidnapping is defined by taking someone and moving them to another place without their consent.

The assault charge is a misdemeanor.

Varlamov will remain in jail overnight because he cannot post bail due to the assault charge.

Hugh Douglas Downward Spiral Continues... Allegedly...

((HT: WFSB-TV))

Former NFL'er and four-letter analyst Hugh Douglas appeared in Hartford Superior Court after he was arrested in downtown Hartford after police said he violently attacked a woman at a hotel.

According to court documents, Douglas grabbed his female victim and "slammed her into the walls several times." The court papers go on to say that Douglas told police the victim's injuries happened during "rough sex."

Douglas was charged with third-degree assault and second-degree strangulation. His next court appearance is October 21st.

He was fired by ESPN close to six weeks ago from his gig after calling Michael Smith an "Uncle Tom" and threatened to beat him up while the two were attending the National Association of Black Journalists convention. At an after party in Orlando, he told Smith that he would beat him up on three separate occasions.

Here's a sample of Douglas' work at ESPN

Kelly Glista over at the Hartford Courant has a little more detail:

He was released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 21.

Security at the hotel called police after Douglas' girlfriend went to the hotel clerk and asked if there were cameras in the hotel, saying she had been assaulted, (Hartford Major Crimes Unit Sergeant Glendaly) Garcia said. The hotel staff noticed red marks on her neck, said Garcia.

Ocho Cinco Gets Treinta In The Slammer

Former NFL star Chad Johnson will serve 30 days in jail after violating his probation in a domestic violence case involving his then-wife, TV reality star Evelyn Lozada.

And the HQ uses the words "TV reality star" loosely...

A plea deal that called for no jail time went away when Broward (FL) Judge Kathleen McHugh rejected it after Johnson popped his attorney on the butt in open court...

Evidence below...
((HT: TMZ/NPN))

Which never goes well in front of a judge you're trying to impress...

McHugh says Johnson "wasn't taking things seriously enough," even after he apologized. Johnson's probation was extended for three months on top of the current numbers because of his actions- to December 21st.

Ochocinco pleaded no contest to head-butting Lozada during an argument back in August. She immediately filed for divorce after a month of marriage.

Johnson said in an interview with ESPN's "First Take" last week that the violation occurred because of a "miscommunication" with his probation officer. He also realizes that he can't keep screwing up- even though he has...

Is The Stevens-Solo Marriage Off After Alleged Assault...???

((HT: KING5-TV Seattle))

Okay...

The HQ has known a lot of relationships in its time, and very few of them that proceeded to nuptials after only two months of dating have led to a great time frame of success...

Enter the idea put forth by former NFL tight end Jerramy Stevens and Hope Solo...

They were, apparently, heading to the altar after applying for a marriage license late last week, but Stevens was arrested and arraigned on charges of domestic violence against the USWNT goaltender.

The judge processing the charge dismissed it because of a lack of evidence...

Here's the early story on the arraignment...

It will be interesting to see what happens next in this...
