The good news for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is that in the long run, he's going to be okay.
But the bad is for the next few weeks, he's going to be dealing with two fractured vertebrae in his back. Those the result of Tuesday afternoons accident that sent his Dodge Ram pickup truck rolling over three times before coming to a landing on an overpass near the Panthers stadium.
Witnesses told police about seeing a car trying to cross the street Newton was driving on when it struck the QB's truck starting the action. The driver of the car was not injured, Newton was transported to the hospital where he stayed overnight.
Newton's status for Sunday's game vs. Tampa Bay is very much in question. The team has been preparing backup Derek Anderson in case Newton is unable to go.
((NOTE--Wednesday afternoon--Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Anderson will get the start))
The injury Newton suffered is very similar to the back injury Dallas QB Tony Romo has been dealing with. Romo has played successfully, but his game is different than Newton's. Cam relies more on a physical running style, Romo does not.
More on Newton from WCNC-TV in Charlotte:

This Is A Downfield Block By A Cyborg
((HT: Cork Gaines Vine))
The HQ has always maintained that Mike Evans, back in his time at Texas A&M, held some very cyborgian qualities as a wide receiver- size, speed, effort. The only thing missing from his HAL 9000-ness was his mental ability to stay locked into a game
Terrence Newman found out the hard way that, when Evans is locked in, he's locked in...
All that did, really, was remind the HQ of this...

Morning Wrap: Washington Analyst Brian Mitchell; "This Team Has Sucked for the Last Few Years"
((ht: awfulannouncing.com))
Give credit to former Washington football star and current CSN Washington football analyst Brian Mitchell. He did not hold back Sunday night when trying to describe the team after their loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-7.
Among the gems used to describe the performance...and the team over the past several years:
"This team has sucked over the last few years and as a former player I'm embarrassed to watch this junk over and over again"
"Embarrasing. This is atrocious. It's despicable. It's pathetic. I think it's asinine."
He also went on to say that it doesn't start and stop with the poor play of franchise QB Robert Griffin III. Adding that everyone on the squad bore some responsibility.
Mitchell was amazed the team somehow managed to put up a crappy performance coming off a bye and playing what was widely considered the worst team in the league.
Well said Brian Mitchell, well said.

Morning Wrap: DEA Agents Visit NFL Team Doctors
Hmmm....this is interesting. It was a surprise Sunday for the medical staffs of several NFL teams this week as they got unexpected visits from the Drug Enforcement Agency.
According to reports: The San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks were all paid visits by agents looking to make sure prescription painkillers were prescribed and handled properly.
According to the folks at ESPN, the visits were prompted in part by player, both former and current, that teams often randomly doled out the painkillers without keeping track of who or how much was given.
The agents were looking for potential Controlled Substance Act violations.
The teams and the league agreed to cooperate with the investigation and according the the NFL, no violations were found.
ESPN, which helped break the story, provides investigative guy John Barr to discuss:

Search Continues For Mike Williams' Brother After Stabbing
((HT: MyFoxTampaBay))
We have, the HQ is sure, all had run-ins with siblings...
Maybe, we've been shot at with BB guns or had to be pushed out of a tree or something...
But this one is a little new...
Tampa Bay Bucs receiver Mike Williams was stabbed in the thigh and the suspect is still on the loose...
His brother...
Here's the overnight report...
FOX 13 News
The Bucs reaction is understandably tepid:
"We are aware of the situation that occurred at the residence of Mike Williams and are working with him and the authorities to get additional information. While we have limited knowledge at this time, our primary concern is for the safety and well-being of all involved. We will refrain from further comment until we can get a better understanding of the situation."
Keith Morelli's coverage for tbo.com is hyah and he caught up with first-year GM Jason Licht:
“We’ve reached out to Mike; we’ve yet to hear from him,” said Licht, contacted Monday at the NFL owners’ meetings in Orlando. “From what I understand, he’s been treated and released, so that’s a good start. We’re trying to gather all the facts we can. We’ve reached out, but we have not spoken with him yet.
“We’re disappointed just that we had a player in that situation that could have been seriously injured. ... I don’t know any other facts right now. We do want to find out how he is health-wise and also what his mindset is.”
Williams signed a 6-year, $40-million contract at the beginning of the 2013 season...

Can We Just Go Back To The Creamsicle Unis...???
((HT: My Fox Tampa Bay))
It looks like someone took the clock from "24" and just combined some pewter and creamsicle trim with gunmetal gray and black...
You get the new Tampa Bay Bucs jerseys...
Really...
It might be going well. It might not...
The HQ doesn't like it one damn bit...unless you're talking about the San Francisco Demons jerseys that just got ripped off...

Black Monday: Add Schiano And Domenik In Tampa... And Schwartz In Detroit...
Not surprising anyone here either, really...
But word had been that former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano had lost the locker room a long time ago and things hadn't gotten any better with the jettisoning of Josh Freeman in order to let Mike Glennon attempt to evolve as as an NFL quarterback...
Even garnering this honor from KO...
((HT: ESPN and Keith Olbermann))
GM Mark Domenik is also gone, according to the Bucs:
“The results over the past two years have not lived up to our standards and we believe the time has come to find a new direction. Mark has been a valued member of our organization for two decades and we respect the passion he showed for the Buccaneers during his time here. We thank Greg for his hard work and effort the past two seasons, but we feel these moves are necessary in order to achieve our goals,” said Buccaneers Co-Chairman Bryan Glazer.
1200 UPDATE: According to Adam Schefter, Jim Schwartz is also gone in Detroit...
The HQ thinks this moment from a few weeks ago didn't sit well with the front office, either, to seal his fate...

Bryan Cox Is Still Bryan Cox
((HT: NFL on FOX))
Bryan Cox was always known for being a little feisty during his days as a linebacker...
Now, he's feisty as a member of Greg Schiano's coaching staff in Tampa...
The HQ doesn't quite know the context of the discussion with Adam Hayward, but don't piss off Bryan Cox- EVAH!
See...???
The HQ also wonders who gets disciplined after this one...???

Could Butch Davis resurface at Florida International?
((ht: sun-sentinel.com))Hmmm. This could be interesting. Reports say that Butch Davis may be the next head coach at Florida International University.
And yes, we know, we said we wouldn't do "Stories" about "Rumored" candidates for college football jobs. But this struck us as a bit of a surprise considering Jones's track record.
He would replace the departed Mario Cristobal, who just one year after being a "Hot" coaching candidate, finds himself unemployed after a 3-9 season.
Davis would be a somewhat controversial hire, but does apparently have ties to the schools athletic director Pete Garcia.
Check out the full story from the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel RIGHT HERE
You'll recall Davis left a huge academic and athletic scandal in his wake after 4-years as the coach at North Carolina. He did win 28 games in those four years and is considered a pretty good coach. We might add that though he was not implicated in the NCAA investigation...or at least he hasn't been...yet.
He will not be subject to the NCAA show-cause penalty unless he is.
Davis currently works as a "Sepcial" defensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also had a stint coaching at the University of Miami and is somewhat familiar with the area.

Tampa Bay Bucs Mascot goes Gangnam style (not horrible)
Okay, we are kind of ashamed to admit we get a good laugh out of these Gangnam style videos. They aren't nearly as obnoxious as the "Call Me Maybe" spin-off's. And that, despite the words to Ganngam being mostly Korean.
Of course we aren't sure what language "Call me Maybe" is in either.
Anyway.
Take a look at the video the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made for their mascot Captain Fear. It's not bad...though there are a couple of oddly sexual looking moments in it. (See the elevator scene)....
So enjoy...and smile. And consider it fortunate the mascots mouth doesn't move.
Behold!

((HT: ESPN))
In addition to Pat Summitt getting the Arthur Ashe Award last night at the four-letter's own awards night, the HQ admits they went two-for-two...
Current Tampa Bay Buc Eric LeGrand received the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance for his fight to walk again after becoming paralyzed playing for Rutgers and his head coach Greg Schiano. Schiano made a point to draft LeGrand in this year's draft...

LeGrand Signs With Bucs
In a classy move by his old college coach, Tampa Bay Bucs head coach Greg Schiano signed former defensive end Eric LeGrand to a free agent contract...
LeGrand had a simple message on his Twitter page this morning...
We ready!!!
Followed with a helmet of his new team...
If you want to keep track of Eric and his efforts, click on the picture in the right-hand margin...
"It's a symbolic gesture. They can't give me any money with the salary cap and all that kind of stuff," LeGrand said in a conference call. "It's symbolic, something coach wanted to do and I appreciate that. It just shows the man that he is."
The HQ couldn't be more proud...

Report: Greg Schiano to the Tampa Bay Bucs
((ht: espn/schefter))
Well, it looks like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may finally have found a coach that isn't going to spurn them.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that they plan on hiring Rutgers Greg Schiano to be their next head coach.
Yeah, we're scratching our heads over this one too.
More details as the become available.
Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times gives us a little insight on Schiano and the process Tampa has gone through.
You can read his article RIGHT HERE
Hope many of these pundits who like Schiano are right. He had some early success at Rutgers, but the last 3-years haven't been pretty in Piscataway.
We'll keep an eye out about an announcement.

Morris and his entire staff are gone, but according to several folks (Schefter, Glazer, etc.) the GM is safe for now...
This might be the reason why...

10-game losing streaks will do that for you...
Start all the big names, now...
