Vin Scully Does Earthquake Play-by-Play: And It Was Awesome

((ht: sportingnews.com))

There are few things in the world more enjoyable than listening to a broadcasting legend call a baseball game. And Friday night, one of those legends, Los Angeles Dodgers voice, Vin Scully, was doing just that.

Scully was calling an exhibition game between the Dodgers and the Angels when a fairly strong, 5.1 earthquake shook Chavez Ravine (home of the Dodgers).

True pro, Scully's tone and voice never changed, he just described it as a tremor and wondered aloud if anyone else had felt it.

"A tremor and only a tremor"

The great ones never panic and try their hardest to make sure nobody else does either.

Listen to Vin Scully call an earthquake: (thanks MLB.com)

ClubberSpeak: Bob Cole – The King

((HT: Jim Lang Blog))

The HQ admits that being in television and having satellite dishes and the NHL Network at our collective disposal has introduced us to how hockey should be produced, announced, and presented on a weekly basis...

With the new television deal that has rocked the landscape up north, Clubber addresses one figure who may not be a part of the new era in the sport...

Unless you have been living in a cave you have heard about the massive new deal Rogers and Sportsnet signed with the NHL.

A big concern for a lot of hockey fans across Canada will be what is going to happen to a lot of our favourite Hockey Night in Canada personalities when the new deal kicks in next year.

I realize a lot of hockey fans won`t agree with me but if this means the end of Bob Cole at Hockey Night in Canada, I am really going to miss him.

Now did Bob Cole make the odd mistake during the call of a game? Sure he did. Did Cole misidentify players from time to time? Yes to that as well.

But there was something about Cole’s voice that brought a sense of drama and excitement to a big game that has yet to be matched in this country. Catch phrases like “Oh Harry” (In reference to his long time colour analyst Harry Neale.) and “Oh baby!” are a part of our hockey vocabulary in Canada.

I will let you in on a little secret. In tribute to Cole I would drop in an “Oh Harry” or an “Oh baby” reference when I did the hockey highlights on Sportsnet. Maybe that’s why I am not at Sportsnet anymore but I loved doing it and I didn’t care what anyone thought.

Call me sentimental but when I think of Bob Cole’s magnificent career at Hockey Night in Canada I choose to think of all his great moments in the booth. And goodness knows he had a lot of them.

That is why Bob Cole will always be the king.

Long live the king.

Here's more of the King...
Oh, baby!!!

This Is What It Sounds Like To Get Trucked

((HT: Awful Announcing/WMUA))

The HQ will admit that there are few things less appealing than college hoops before January...

But the four-letter network did their 24-hour, round-the-clock marathon to showcase the sport and give themselves non-stop programming...

But Awful Announcing gives us a moment... and it was a moment...

In the UMass-LSU game, there was a loose ball, players, and UMass Chris Doherty taking the charge...

Doherty and his equipment survived...
As far as we know...

Captain America Saves The Day Again...Pats Radio Explodes...

((HT: NFL on FOX))

All the Patriots had to do was go 70 yards in 63 seconds for the lead and, eventually, the win...

But the call of the day doesn't go to Thom Brennaman...
It goes to Bob Socci and Scott Zolak on Patriots radio... Zolak evoked memories of everything from Chris Kluwe and Clara Peller...

Listen to the call here...

Oh, Clara Peller...???

Now do you remember...???

But it will be an interesting week to see how the Pats deal with the losses of Aqib Talib and Danny Amendola...

Jeff Fisher Doesn't Like Bernie Kosar At the Moment

((HT: Fox 2 St Louis))

Bernie Kosar was the color analyst for the Cleveland Browns Thursday night in their game against the St. Louis Rams and he didn't hold anything back...

Examples:

On a Sam Bradford incompletion to Tavon Austin: "I really think that he didn't overthrow him and that Austin has to make that catch in the NFL. I see why Sam Bradford has been struggling watching how bad these receivers have been for him."

After a Nick Johnson drop: "This is actually not a bad throw. These St. Louis receivers are horrible. That's a drop there."

On receivers coach Ray Sherman:

"I'm checking through the itinerary here of guys and coaches to see who the receivers coach is to make sure I don't know who this guy is because he's not doing very good either."

He also slapped back-up QB Kellen Clements around, too...

Jeff Fisher was asked about Kosar's comments. Fisher admitted he lost a "lot of respect" for the ex-Browns QB...

Here's Fishers response on tape...

Don't think the two families will be exchanging holiday cards, do you...???

Vin Scully Calls A Rivera Save... How Cool Is That...???

((HT: MLB/FSWest))

There are few times on this earth that we get to see greatness wrapped in greatness...

Last night, in Los Angeles, the Yankees beat the Dodgers but that wasn't the story...

For the bottom of the ninth, Vin Scully called a Mariano Rivera save...

Sit back and enjoy...

Standard excellence from both and the HQ wouldn't expect anything less...

Vin Scully And Paper Airplanes= PBP Gold

((HT: FS Dodgers/MLB))

When games get out of hand, as the 16-1 Phillies win over the Dodgers did the other night, fans can find things to do with their game notes...

And Vin will be there to call the end of the sporting exhibition...

And now, he can check that sport off his list for calling the lead...

Excessive Celebration...??? For The Canadians It Was...

((HT: Sportsnet/FAN 590))

Sydney Leroux was born in British Columbia, but now plays for the US Women's National Team...

She scored a goal late in the friendly (or not-so-friendly) at BMO Field in Toronto in a game that the Canadians called a revenge game for the incident in the five-ringed circus...

Remember...???
((HT: NBCSports/IOC))

So, Leroux scores the final goal in the 3-0 win for the U.S. team, and then celebrated by thumping the American badge on her jersey in front of Canadian fans in the south end of the stadium.

Sportsnet soccer commentator Gerry Dobson thinks so, telling Sportsnet 590 The FAN’s Brady and Lang that Leroux “threw gasoline on the fire” with that celebration.

Here was how they reacted on the tube in Canada... Gerry Dobson and Craig Forrest...

So...??? Was it excessive...???

Leroux responded on her Twitter feed:

When you chant racial slurs, taunt me and talk about my family don't be mad when I shush you and show pride in what I represent.

ICYMI: Wizards Play By Play Guy Calls Game Winner That Never Happened

((ht: awfulannouncing.com))

Yes, for a guy calling a professional or for that matter any sports game on TV, there's nothing more exciting to call a "Game Winner".

And that's what makes this call so funny.

Steve Buchantz, who calls Washington Wizards games for Comcast Sports was so ready to call a game winning 3-pointer that he actually called it, even though the shot, by Wizards forward Trevor Ariza drew nothing but air, just tickling the bare-bottom part of the net.

What's funnier, is despite the despondent look on Ariza's face and cutaways of the victorious Detroit Pistons, Buchantz stayed with the buzzer beater call for a minute.

DEVELOPING: Garagiola Retiring From D-Backs Booth

From the Diamondbacks their own selves...

At as press conference set for tomorrow, Hall of Fame broadcaster and former Major League catcher Joe Garagiola will be at an announcement with D-backs President & CEO Derrick Hall where Garagiola will be ending his tenure after 15 seasons as an analyst on select D-backs television broadcasts.

The 1991 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will discuss his decision to officially retire from the booth following a broadcasting career that began in 1955.

Sad when a guy still has it, but in the landscape it's not a surprise...

More when we know more...

The Story Behind "Man Down! Man Down!"

((HT: Newschannel5.com/WTVF-TV))

The HQ is aware that everyone wants our job...
Trust us, we know how cool it is what we get to do for a living...

But to get into the business these days, you have to start younger and younger to get your name out there in the attempt of getting your foot in the door.

That's what two Nashville-Hillsboro students have done with their calls on regional games in central Tennessee...

Like these in a compilation...
((HT: Yahoo!PrepRally))

So, let's find out from the kids themselves about their (how you say) zealousness...
