Sportsnet West's Gene Principe knew the calendar had turned to December 1st, so the recognition associated with the causes was at a head. Which meant that Gene had to get rid of the evidence...
There's a new book out on the troubled life of NHL enforcer Derek Boogaard- the HQ encourages picking it up...
The Boogey Man's dad, Len, went on "Prime Time Sports" for the first time to discuss what he thinks happened to his son through the eyes of the National Hockey League...
Bottom line- he thinks his son's problems, mounting as he continued to play, were left and not addressed in a timely fashion... Brett Popplewell addressed Boogaard's last days in the premier edition of Sportnet Magazine back in 2011.John Branch wrote in his book on Boogaard as Sportsnet reports:"Within a year, Derek would have teeth knocked out and be prescribed vast amounts of painkillers by team doctors. In another year, he would be in substance abuse rehabilitation. In another year, he would be in New York, rich and miserable and alone. And in another year, he would be dead."
Boogaard was diagnosed, after his death, with CTE and his father went on to do his own investigation surrounding his son's passing.
Ian Jenkins was set to be a junior hockey player in the Ontario Hockey League in 2011, but an accident cut his life horribly short.
What has happened since reminds is all about the impacts we can make while we are alive if we look at how others handle tougher situations than we can possibly fathom.
But there is no mistaking that Bob McCown is a legend in the sports talk industry- and it's wild to think that he has been at the forefront of the industry, based in Toronto, for a quarter-century...
Sportsnet put together a special on him and his impact that includes some of the FOSG
After Luis Suarez knocked off 5 teammates yesterday in his soccer debut after knee surgery. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says that the squad is "grasping at straws" if they think they'll make it to the knockout stages.
Here's how Suarez did it...
And England skipper Roy Hodgson is not gonna quit- although a lot of folks want his head...
FOSG James Sharman thinks that the big guns for England didn't show up...
The announcement was made today in Toronto and the landscape will be markedly different when "Hockey Night" moves its way from CBC to Rogers and the new generation of hockey broadcasting will be led by George Stroumboulopoulous...
Strombo, Ron MacLean, Don Cherry, Daren Millard, and Jeff Marek will be on the front lines...
Here's Scott Moore with the announcement
The short version:
Cherry and MacLean will still do "Coach's Corner" on Saturdays
MacLean will also host Hockey Day in Canada and Sunday’s new "Hometown Hockey Community Celebration"
Millard will host programming on Wednesday nights
Marek will host action on Thursdays, Friday Night Hockey and the Memorial Cup
Although, at first glance, the HQ would wonder why in the hockey preliminaries...
But...
By failing to win in regulation and having to take the Finland match to overtime, Canada did not clinch the top seed and a favourable matchup in the quarter-finals. It means the Canadians are the tournament’s third seed and could face Switzerland in their next game.
Sixth-seeded Switzerland and 11th-seeded Latvia play Tuesday in the qualification round.
The winner meets Canada in the quarter-finals Wednesday.
So... is there cause for alarm...???
The Hockey Central team discusses...
Okay, so we now have the answer that some probably didn't want to hear...
If it goes sideways in Sochi, Team USA goalie Mike Smith might have had it right by not adding any family to his travel itinerary for the Games. The US government has said that there will be ships, planes, and helicopters at the ready for evacuations...
The only vision the HQ has, really, is the last images of the fall of Saigon where people were rescued from the embassy roof.
We hope we're wrong...
But the Hockey Central guys- Millard, Kypreos, and Maclean asked Bill Daly about a Plan B...
Which, apparently, doesn't exist...
The HQ had a personal attachment to the plane crash that wiped out the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team on September 7, 2011.
Atlanta Thrashers assistant coach Brad McCrimmon was doing the same as the head coach with Lokomotiv at the time of the crash and we remember him for his hard-nosed play on the ice and teachings off it.
The KHL let them reassemble for the 2012 season with a bunch of young kids and Tom Rowe as head coach. One year later, Pyotr Vorobyov is now in charge of young kids who are a year older...
If you follow the NHL, you'll recognize the name of goalie Curtis Sanford and that's about it...
But, they haven't turtled and they're three points clear of the 8th playoff spot in the Western Division...
Here's a look at their road back...
As a side note, relatives of six players are seeking 105 million rubles ($3 million) in a lawsuit filed late last week.
The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for moral damages, insurance payments, burial expenses, property damage and survivors' benefits from Yak Service, the charter company operating the flight, and insurance firms.
And we now have a player coming forward who isn't a fan of the current lawsuit where people are piling on to turn the thing into a class action suit rather quickly...
Jeremy Roenick was a guest on "Prime Time Sports" with Bobcat and Damien Cox...
Mel Owens, the lead attorney on the NHL concussion lawsuit, made time for "HockeyCentral" on Sportsnet and The Fan Radio Network to discuss the idea behind the lawsuit and where it stands...
It made for interesting conversation among Owens, Daren Millard, Doug MacLean, and Nick Kypreos...
Kypreos was, obviously, on the old-school, player's side about education...
MacLean was not happy, either, from a front office perspective... Sportsnet's Chris Johnston reports that the number of players in the lawsuit is now over 200...
