This is just really a cool moment more than anything else...
San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy was getting his hat handed to him last night in the game against the Dodgers. Tim Hudson started and got shelled- giving up 6 in an inning-plus. Tim Lincecum came in for a relief appearance and got shelled- giving up five runs in three innings. Mike Kickham came in for a relief appearance after that and got shelled- giving up four in an ining and two-thirds.
It was 15-0 before anyone could really get settled and Dodgers starter Zack Greinke even hit a home run to help his own cause.
So, the game was out of control. As a manager, what do you do...???
Call your son, Brett, out of the bullpen for the bottom of the sixth...
Brett was understandably shaky giving up 2 runs in an inning and a third, but, hey...
How many dads get to do that...???

Yasiel Puig Breaks Bat on Check Swing

Whoa! Despite our general disdain for the fact Yasiel Puig seems to make the highlight reels for just showing up, we had to share this.
Check out what happened Friday night during the Milwaukee Brewers vs. LA Dodgers game at Chavez Ravine. A game won by the Brewers 9-3.
Puig tries to hold back his swing on the pitch and is able to do so. However the barrel of the bat didn't cooperate. The barrel goes flying and the ump has no choice other than to call it a strike.
Which leads to the question: Was the bat defective or was Puig's grip just that strong?

The Dude Abides: Jeff Bridges Rolls 1st Pitch at Dodgers Game

If you've seen the movie "The Big Lebowski" then you get the reference in the headline and you'll get this video.
Check out Jeff Bridges, Academy Award winning actor, known to many as "The Dude" from the Big Lebowski.
The Dude threw out the first pitch at Friday's Los Angeles Dodgers/Chicago Cubs game.
Only he didn't throw it.
Bridges went through a windup, then ran up and rolled the ball to the plate like he was bowling.
Again, if you've seen the movie, you know why this was very cool....and very funny..

Vin Scully Will Return For A 66th Season

And the Dodgers pulled out all the stops last night to pull one over on the fans...
It was, first, the equivalent of a Vin Scully bobblehead giveaway night- a microphone was handed out to the fans who made it early enough to Chavez Ravine.
And, then, to announce his return, the folks at TWCSLA did a little between-innings reporting...
Wanna see a crowd go absolute bananas...???
Thanks for coming back...

Things Happened In 3's For Yasiel Puig. Jimmy Sheckard Knew That Feeling 113 Years Ago

Back on opening day 1901 Sheckard had three triples for the Brooklyn Bridegrooms/Superbas.
113 years later Yasiel Puig matched Sheckard with three triples Friday night against the San Francisco Giants.
Of course it helps when two of your three baggers and blasted to the deepest part of AT&T Park.
"I saw I'm the second guy in franchise history, and it's important, but it's way better to win the playoffs and win the World Series," Puig said
Puig added a double with his three triples going 4-5 for the game.
According to the Dodgers only three players since 1954 have hit three triples and a double in a game:
Les Bell - 1926
Herm Winningham - 1990
Yasiel Puig - 2014
You might say Jimmy Sheckard was a good as Puig for his era some 115 years ago.

That same season Sheckard became the first and to anyone's knowledge the only player in the majors to hit inside the park grand slam home runs in consectutive games.
In 1903 Sheckard became the first player to lead the league in home runs and steals. Only Ty Cobb in 1909 and Chuck Klein in 1932 are the only other players to achieve that double.
Sheckard enjoyed a 17 year major league career and won two World Series titles as a member of the Chicago Cubs.
Like Yasiel Puig Jimmy Sheckard was a tough out.

DEVELOPING: Dodgers Found Partly Liable In Stow Beating

The jury has come back and delivered a verdict in the beating of San Francisco Giants fan Bryan Stow on Opening Day 2011.
Stow's attorney maintained the Dodgers and then-owner Frank McCourt were liable for having lacked proper security forces at Dodger Stadium should fighting break out between Dodger and Giants fans.
The end result is that McCourt is absolved. The Dodgers are 25-percent to blame and the two men charged in the Stow beating- Louie Sanchez and Marvin Norwood are responsible for the balance.
The jury awarded Stow $18 million in damages, which means the Dodgers must pay about $4.5 million. Sanchez and Norwood would be responsible for the balance.

Clayton Kershaw Throw's A No-Hitter That's Close To Perfection
The best pitcher in baseball threw his first no hitter.
Wednesday night Clayton Kesrshaw dominated the Colorado Rockies striking out 15 on 107 pitches and no walks.
Why no perfect game for Kershaw, Hanley Ramirez committed a throwing error in the seventh inning.
"I will remember this for the rest of my life." Kershaw said.
The thing about it, all the guys sit and watch, and you listen to them and they say nobody deserves this more than him" Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "He works hard every day. He does everything right. He's a great teammate. The two Cy Youngs don't even get in the way. It's just so nice to watch someone like that get it."
As far as individual games go this is pretty special." Kershaw said. "

McCourt Testifies In Bryan Stow Civil Trial

This was interesting...
The former owner of the LA Dodgers testified in the $35-million civil trial brought by Bryan Stow and his family after Stow received a beating in the Dodger Stadium parking lot on Opening Weekend 2011. He is suing McCourt for that amount claiming that will cover his costs for lifetime care since Stow has brain damage and is disabled.
Stow's father was the only member of the family to watch the testimony in the negligence case.
McCourt was asked about the security (or perceived lack thereof) and the McCourt camp maintains that intoxication and heated words caused the fight and beating that disabled Stow rather than the lack of security.

Neill Murchison, part of then-owner Frank McCourt's personal security detail for one year, testified Tuesday in the Bryan Stow civil trial.
He said on the stand that he raised concerns over the lack of security presence at Dodger Stadium and that there had been an increase of gang activity there- particularly in the parking lots. One of those lots, Lot 2, was where Bryan Stow, a Giants fan, was beaten severely Opening Day Weekend of 2011 by Dodgers fans at the stadium and is suing McCourt for $50-million in a civil proceeding for pain, suffering, and medical costs since he is now permanently disabled.
Jeff Bradford, a friend of Stow's, also testified Tuesday. Bradford was also beaten, but defense attorneys asked about just how sober he was- intimating he wouldn't know how much security may or may not have been around to protect fans.

Stow suffered brain damage in the Opening Day 2011 beating at Dodger Stadium and is permanently disabled.
His lawyers say his lifetime care could cost $50 million and he will not testify in the case.

Four of the 16 will become alternate jurors, but the panelists will not know until the end of the trial which 12 will actually deliberate on the Stow case and deliver a verdict.

Let's go to the last out first, since the pitch before, Chase Utley started walking to first on a three-ball count...
Beckett throws the 21st no-hitter in the history of the Dodgers franchise and the first since Hideo Nomo in 1996.

Beckett, who has one career one-hitter, entered the game 4-12 in his last 20 road starts -- including a 1-1 record in three road starts this year with a 4.32 ERA.
Beckett, whose previous closest call to a no-hitter was 6 2/3 innings against Detroit when he was with Boston on June 4, 2009
After a walk to Marlon Byrd in the second inning, Beckett would go on and retire 21 in a row. He threw 128 pitches, walking 3 and striking out 6. It was the outing in his career with the most pitches thrown- facing 30 batters along the way.

Chad Butera Hits 94 On The Gun

Last night, the Marlins were rolling on the Dodgers and with the game way out of hand the home team decided to put in catcher Chad Butera to pitch the ninth.
He has done it before for the Twins, so it wasn't all that unfamiliar.

Vin Scully Does Earthquake Play-by-Play: And It Was Awesome

There are few things in the world more enjoyable than listening to a broadcasting legend call a baseball game. And Friday night, one of those legends, Los Angeles Dodgers voice, Vin Scully, was doing just that.
Scully was calling an exhibition game between the Dodgers and the Angels when a fairly strong, 5.1 earthquake shook Chavez Ravine (home of the Dodgers).
True pro, Scully's tone and voice never changed, he just described it as a tremor and wondered aloud if anyone else had felt it.
"A tremor and only a tremor"
The great ones never panic and try their hardest to make sure nobody else does either.

Time Lapse Shows Australian Cricket Field Converted for Baseball

This video is pretty cool. And we are suckers for a good time lapse video.
MLB.com shows what it took to convert the Sydney Cricket Grounds in Austrailia to a Major League Baseball ready facility.
And it appears it took quite a bit.
For those of you who don't know. Technically, baseball's regular season will begin this weekend down under as the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks square off for a pair of games.
Several Dodgers will not make the trip and the players don't appear to be overjoyed about flying across the Pacific Ocean and back for two games--but that's another story for another day.
In the meantime, enjoy this video:
