OSG High: Tennessee's First-Ever Women's Head Football Coach

((HT: WSMV-TV))

We first got the attention of this story in the espnw piece by Ashley Scoby

But, circling back and checking out the best season Pickett County High has had in a handful of seasons, the HQ figured we would go back to the beginning.

Brittney Garner was named head coach for the Bobcats when they let her predecessor go over the summer. The bottom line was that Garner was already certified for softball and took the job so the team wouldn't be dissolved.

Former Pickett lineman Samantha Harden is helping out as a community coach and former coach O.B. Caudle has come out of retirement to help Garner out as well.

The fact that they're 2-7 doesn't matter...

Patrick McMurtry caught up with them at the beginning...

A Very Special First MLB Hit In Arlington

((HT: MLB.com))

A lot of folks get their first major league hit in circumstances a lot less lengthy than the Texas Rangers' Guilder Rodriguez...

It took the September call-up of the 31-year-old to get in the line-up after almost 1,100 minor league games- the equivalent of almost 7 seasons eventhough he has spent 14 actual seasons in the minors.

But he finally got it with his family in attendance...

The Rangers have seen Rodriguez be a mentor to two other infielders in the system- Rougned Odor and Luis Sardinas. Interim manager Tim Bogar wanted to throw Rodriguez a solid for all he has done.

His career looks like one of those roadmaps you would think with stops that included Helena, Beloit, Huntsville, West Virginia, Brevard County, the Arizona League, OKC, Frisco, and Round Rock. He's a career .256 hitter in the minors, so three cheers to the Rangers for seeing what the guy has done as a lifer.

Manager Gets To Call In Son For Relief

((HT: MLB.com))

This is just really a cool moment more than anything else...

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy was getting his hat handed to him last night in the game against the Dodgers. Tim Hudson started and got shelled- giving up 6 in an inning-plus. Tim Lincecum came in for a relief appearance and got shelled- giving up five runs in three innings. Mike Kickham came in for a relief appearance after that and got shelled- giving up four in an ining and two-thirds.

It was 15-0 before anyone could really get settled and Dodgers starter Zack Greinke even hit a home run to help his own cause.

So, the game was out of control. As a manager, what do you do...???

Call your son, Brett, out of the bullpen for the bottom of the sixth...

Brett was understandably shaky giving up 2 runs in an inning and a third, but, hey...

How many dads get to do that...???

Sutherland Cards First-Ever Champions Tour 59

((HT: Golf Channel))

And, to think, Kevin Sutherland had a putt for 58...

In Endicott, New York, one-time PGA Tour winner Kevin Sutherland had the round of his life in the second round of the Champions Tour event Saturday. His front side was seven birdies and an eagle finishing with 12 birdies overall.

His only misstep was the par putt on 18... for a 28-31 scorecard...

Here's the highlights of the round...

Nine players shot 60 on the Champions Tour- most recently Michael Allen at the 2014 Allianz Championship.
Six players have shot 59 on the PGA Tour- most recently Jim Furyk at the 2013 BMW Championship.

Sun Devils Sarafin Comes Out: Just How Big A Deal Is This Now...???

((HT: AZCentral.com/Haller))

Chip Sarafin has been a part of the Arizona State football program for the last four seasons as a non-scholarship offensive lineman. And in an article released today in Tempe, Arizona-based Compete magazine Sarafin told writer Joshua Wyrick that he is gay.

Serafin told Wyrick that he started telling his teammates that he's gay back in the spring. The news became public with the release of the magazine on Wednesday.

According to the article, there has been no issue with Sarafin and is Sun Devil teammates since his announcement and it is thought that he is the first-ever Division I football player to announce he is gay during his activity on campus.

Here's the first look from Dan Bickley:
((HT: KPNX-TV))
ASU head coach Todd Graham released a statement: "We are a brotherhood that is not defined by cultural and personal differences, but rather an individual's commitment to the Sun Devil Way. Chip is a fifth-year senior and a Scholar Baller, a graduate and a master's student. His commitment to service is unmatched and it is clear he is on his way to leading a successful life after his playing career, a goal that I have for every student-athlete. Diversity and acceptance are two of the pillars of our program, and he has full support from his teammates and the coaching staff." Vice President for Athletics Ray Anderson said Sarafin has ASU's support: "The entire athletics department is extremely proud of Chip and is unequivocally supportive of him. His undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering, his pursuit of a master's in the same field, his research involving football-related concussions, and his heavy involvement in the community with both youth sports in Arizona and the Tillman Scholars embodies all the characteristics that set our student-athletes apart and allows our university to maintain an environment of inclusiveness and progression."
And the larger question is: Is this THAT big a deal in its progressive behavior...???

The HQ lauds Sarafin and the stance of ASU at present and we hope it continues...
