This is just really a cool moment more than anything else...
San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy was getting his hat handed to him last night in the game against the Dodgers. Tim Hudson started and got shelled- giving up 6 in an inning-plus. Tim Lincecum came in for a relief appearance and got shelled- giving up five runs in three innings. Mike Kickham came in for a relief appearance after that and got shelled- giving up four in an ining and two-thirds.
It was 15-0 before anyone could really get settled and Dodgers starter Zack Greinke even hit a home run to help his own cause.
So, the game was out of control. As a manager, what do you do...???
Call your son, Brett, out of the bullpen for the bottom of the sixth...
Brett was understandably shaky giving up 2 runs in an inning and a third, but, hey...
How many dads get to do that...???

Romine's Rough Outing As Reliever
((HT: MLB.com))
With the Tigers down 17-6 to the Twins last night, the tigers threw in the towel after their bullpen took a beating all night long.
Infielder Andrew Romine made his first career relief appearance in the bottom of the eighth inning, but he left with an ERA of 27.
He gave up a double to Kennys Vargas before giving up back-to-back home runs to Oswaldo Arcia and Trevor Plouffe. Arcia hit his second foul pole of the night in the right field bleachers.
The up side was that Romine retired three out of the next four batters, including a strikeout of Kurt Suzuki.

Semi-Pro Baseball Team Has A Real Closer
((HT: KPVI-TV))
Semi-pro ball and independent ball litter the United States and it's part of what makes the country one of the coolest places on this or any other planet...
And it takes all types to make up a roster...
Like a Pocatello, Idaho fireman who doubles as a relief pitcher
The HQ remembers when a certain antacid gave out a "Fireman of the Year" award to the best closer...
Seems like the Grays already have one...

John Baker Gets The Win For The Cubs In 16
((HT: MLB.com))
Big deal, you say...???
John Baker is a Cubs catcher brought on to pitch the 16th inning last night at Wrigley and he did this...
It was the longest-timed game for both teams at 6 hours and 27 minutes. Baker admitted he hadn't pitched since the Cape Cod League, so we're probably talking at least a dozen years ago.
Frankly, the HQ blames Colin Cowherd since he was the one who sang "Take Me Out To The Ballgame." We don't know what we would blame him for, but we'll blame him just because.

Tigers Bust Out The Infielder-Reliever
((HT:MLB.com))
This is what happens when your bullpen is taxed and you don't think you have any other options...
The Tigers trotted out infielder Danny Worth with a special weapon for an inning of work

Chad Butera Hits 94 On The Gun
((HT: MLB.com))
Last night, the Marlins were rolling on the Dodgers and with the game way out of hand the home team decided to put in catcher Chad Butera to pitch the ninth.
He has done it before for the Twins, so it wasn't all that unfamiliar.
The only thing that could make this better was Vin Scully calling it...
Oh, wait...

Jeff Francoeur: Re-Invented as a Relief Pitcher
((ht: sportingnews.com))
Yeah, sure, this is under the "He's still in baseball" category, but so what. We've covered San Diego Padres minor leaguer Jeff Francoeur since he was a kid playing baseball and football at Parkview (Lilburn, GA) High School.
And he's truly one of the nicest, most fun-loving guys you'll ever meet.
But he's struggled as a pro baseball player. Sure, he was Rookie of the Year in 2005 with the Atlanta Braves, but he's not done much since then. In fact he's been with 5 different MLB teams in the past 4 years.
That's why we found this video and story interesting.
It appears Frenchy may have found his calling. As a relief pitcher. Sure, it's only AAA Baseball for a crappy team in El Paso, Texas (the Chihuahuas) and it's only mop-up duty, but Jeff's not given up a run in his 4 appearances this season.
We know, it's a short sample. And according to The Sporting News, he's been holding back, hitting somewhere around 89 mph with his fastball. He can throw harder, but his manager doesn't want him to get hurt.
Anyway, here's video of Francoeur the reliever:
