OSG High: The Dark Side Of High School Football And The Art Of The Appeal

((HT: WSAV-TV))

Kids transfer...

It's a part of high school existence and, even moreso, high school athletics.

Parents of athletes, and the athletes themselves, want to make sure that these days their opportunities are "maximized." If you can move, and move successfully, then maybe your chances to improve your place are magnified.

The case of former Savannah (GA) Country Day-slash-Alabama commit Demetris Robertson is going down those lines very quickly.

Robertson through either the desire of his brother-guardian, himself, or both wanted to transfer to another contending football program across town- Savannah Christian.

But the hook is, and has been, Robertson has had to file paperwork with the state governing body- the Georgia High School Association- to prove he had moved districts to be eligible to play for SCPS.

Through repeated appeals, his status has been denied for one reason or another. With his guardian threatening a lawsuit against the GHSA, FOSG Ken Slats may have discovered the real reason that Robertson may not be playing this season.

Looks like his old school objected on the grounds that the move was only football-based and didn't have anything to do with academics.
Local news, weather, sports Savannah | WSAV On Your Side

The larger question in all of this: Just how much education is Robertson getting this season in bouncing between schools and will he even get a high school diploma this season...???

OSG High DEVELOPING: 3rd Winningest HS FB Coach In US Retires

The HQ has been covering high school sports for the last twenty years now, and today we say good-bye to one of the coolest guys we've ever covered...

Larry Campbell was hired as a baseball coach out of school for the Lincoln County (GA) Red Devils in 1971. He accepted the job on a Delta Air Lines post card on the way to his honeymoon in Florida and has become one of the living legends in high school football in the country.

Today, he hangs up his whistle... for now... because, frankly, the HQ always sees him as a coach- even as we know he wants to spend time with his kids and be a parent and a grandparent...

Here's the top 10 wins list, thanks to FootballFridayNight.com
1 John McKissick 606-150-13
2 John T. Curtis 524-56-6
3 Larry Campbell 477-85-3
4 Mike Smith 440-76-2
5 George Curry 430-95-5
6 Corky Rogers 428-75-1
7 Al Fracassa 424-121-7
8 G. A. Moore 423-97-9
9 Dick Tighe 407-154-8
10 Pete Atkins 405-60-4

Campbell leaves Lincolnton with 11 state titles in his 42 years and also won 44 straight games from 1989 to 1991

Here's a tour Campbell gave of his trophies a year or so ago...
((HT: Augusta Chronicle))

The HQ wishes him and Miss Connie the best as they take the 2014 season off... and thank them for the example they have set over the last four decades...

OSG High: State Title Coach Resigns Over Recruiting/Grades Flap

((HT: AJC/Holcomb))

This one has a lot of moving parts...

First moving part: Steve DeVoursney was the head football coach for the Griffin High (GA) Bears and won the 2013 Class 4A title
Evidence below...
((HT: GPB Sports/GHSA))

But, over the last three years the rivalry between the city school and the county school, Spalding, seems to have escalated to a different level entirely. Under allegations of illegal recruiting of student-athletes and improper academic assistance, DeVoursney and his wife- a science teacher at the school- submitted their resignations.

They were accepted by the Board of Education Thursday evening.
All the shenanigans then kicked into a high gear last fall...

From Holcomb:

The events that prompted the investigation began in September, 2013, when Griffin principal Keith Simmons questioned the legality of the transfer of a student-athlete from his school to county rival Spalding High. The schools are located five miles apart.

Simmons wrote a letter to the GHSA that asserted that the transfer student from Griffin was not living legally in the Spalding district, according to the report. Simmons speculated in the letter that Spalding football coach Nick Davis illegally recruited the student-athlete.

The Spalding principal, in turn, asked for an investigation on a three-year student at Griffin who was ineligible, but went through what was termed a "course recovery" program and became eligible. The Spalding High principal questioned the idea of 18 hours being picked up rather quickly.

And to top it all off, the student whose eligibility was restored was questioned in the investigation and fingered the coach's wife for giving him answers to tests.

Got all this...???
There's a test later on...

No immediate word on whether DeVoursney will pursue any job openings in the central part of the state- where he grew up, won a title as a player, and won a title as a coach. There are still a handful of openings still in the state for the upcoming 2014 season. And the fallout of this is huge...

It also makes the Spalding-Griffin rivalry really nasty from this moment on...

OSG High: Address Fraud Confirmed In Atlanta Football Program

((HT: 11Alive.com, WXIA-TV))

As OSG Sports first reported a week ago, the Atlanta Public Schools investigation into Grady High School and its football program has unveiled duplicate addresses for athletes who claimed to have lived in the district when they, in fact, did not...

Up to 20 players addresses were in question when an anonymous tip was called into APS in early November.

Here's part of the release from APS Superintendent Erroll B. Davis, Jr.

After interviewing the majority of the parents and guardians of the Grady High School Football team, APS has conclusive evidence of address fraud. Specifically, we have confirmed that parents falsified enrollment affidavits for students who live outside of the Grady attendance zone, and in some instances, outside of the city of Atlanta. The interviews also revealed additional issues that warrant further investigation.

Players who were fraudulently enrolled will be required to leave the school. Parents who falsified enrollment affidavits are subject to reimbursing the district tuition of up to $10,000 per school year, as well as other legal consequences that may be pursued.

While parents are ultimately responsible for false affidavits, there are issues of institutional control that must be addressed before we conclude this investigation. Integrity is paramount, and we want to send a message that false affidavits have academic, personnel, financial and legal consequences that are simply not worth it.

This remains an ongoing investigation that will continue after the winter break.

Here's the latest from the TV side...

The Georgia High School Association will now get to decide if the athletes will be eligible in their home districts...
Head football coach Ronnie Millen, Junior is still reassigned...

OSG sources close to the Grady situation still maintain it wasn't the first time of an event like this...and won't be the last...

OSG High: Creekside Aiming For Perfect Season

((HT: MyFoxAtlanta))

The HQ has followed the story of Creekside (GA) High School and their football team ever since one of their own, DeAntre Turman, was lost in a scrimmage back in August from head trauma...

Head Coach Olten Downs and his team have played their season in memory of Turman saying: "Do it for deuce..."

And they have...

OSG High: Team Gets Title Rings 48 Years After Win

((HT: WSB-TV))

Trinity High in Decatur, Georgia won the state title in 1965 defeating Tifton-Wilson 19-14 with guys like eventual Browns DB Clarence Scott on the roster.

But a lot of people didn't recognize the Georgia Interscholastic Association champs as actual champs of high school football until about a decade ago.

The Bulldogs never got title rings for their win until last week...

Here's FOSG Jeff Dore

The Bulldogs had seven shut outs in their 13-0 season under O.F. Massey and only gave up 25 points in the regular season.

OSG High: Georgia HS Player Dies During Scrimmage (UPDATED With Cause)

((HT: AJC.com/Holcomb, Lee, Stevens))

Creekside High (GA) Cornerback DeAntre Turman died last night during a scrimmage and is the first on-field death in three years in Georgia high school football.

He was hurt in a scrimmage last night and transported to a local hospital where he died. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office has not released a cause of death at present and is scheduled to perform an autopsy within the next few days.

Turman had a scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky as a junior- according to 247Sports and former coaches.

The AJC got in touch with the Executive Director of the Georgia High School Association, Dr. Ralph Swearngin:

“Any kind of death of an adolescent, it’s a tragedy,” Swearngin said. “You think about the loss to the family and a young life being cut off whether it’s an athletic event or car accident or natural causes. As a father and grandfather, it strikes you personally.”

Here's Turman in action from his time at Creekside

OSG High UPDATE: Vigil Held In Quitman After Brooks Tragedy

((HT: WALB-TV Albany))

There was a prayer vigil held in the Brooks County High School gym last night for the three Trojans football players who lost their lives yesterday in the automobile crash that left a fourth life-flighted to Shands hospital- still in critical condition...

Ben Roberts leads anchor coverage from Albany...
WALB.com, Albany News, Weather, Sports

The scariest quote comes from Coach Freeman in that piece about being a minute behind them and discovering the scene- thinking, initially, there was nothing wrong...

Coach Freeman was set to address the team this morning and have grief counselors at the ready...

One of the more admirable ideas is that Coach Freeman is going to take his time in getting his team back on the football field- as it should be...

According to Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Victor Mobley, the state patrol’s Special Collision Reconstruction Team looks to have determined that the Ford Expedition the teens were traveling in had been traveling south on a road near the school when it veered off the east side of the road then slammed into a tree on the west side of the road as the driver sought to regain control.

1100 UPDATE: Some good news...

A spokesman at Shands in Gainesville, FL says De'Vron Whitfield is improving in his condition.

Hospital officials say Whitfield's condition has been upgraded to "fair".

The Brooks County School system is working to offer support to any student or staff member who needs it in the wake of the crash.

No word on funeral services on the three teens who have passed...

OSG High: 12 Year-Old Girl Told She Can't Play Football With The Boys Anymore

((HT: MyFoxAtlanta))

Because she's a girl and boys might "lust after her" and boys playing against her might have "impure thoughts..."

According to the mother of Maddy Baxter, Cassy Blythe, that's what the CEO of Strong Rock Christian School told her in a meeting to discuss why her daughter goes from starting middle school DT to on the sidelines...

Here's FOSG Russ Spencer...
Atlanta News, Weather, Traffic, and Sports | FOX 5

The school has posted a statement on its website saying: "Middle school girls play girls' sports and middle school boys play boy's sports." And that hasn't gone over well with the family that lives about 40 miles south of the city of Atlanta.

The hook in all of this is that Strong Rock is a private school and, therefore, not bound to the rules of county school systems. Maddy's family is trying to lobby the school to change its position- which they have a good feeling they won't. They're also thinking of transferring her or home schooling her.

Maddy has received backing from the local pro women's football team, the Atlanta Phoenix, and there is a Facebook page up encouraging anyone who is in Maddy's corner to "Let Her Play." It has over 43,000 likes at present...

OSG High: An Off-Season Game Changer In Ga HSFB; Herron Leaves Camden

((HT: AJC/Holcomb, Oconee Democrat/Matthews))

There are no other words but "stunner" is a good start...

Long-time Camden County (GA) head football coach Jeff Herron is leaving the toughest region and classification for the smallest classification and Prince Avenue Christian (GA) School. Herron has won state titles at Oconee County (GA) High School in 1999 and at Camden in 2003, 2008 and 2009 and was 158-18 in his 13 seasons in Kingsland. He is one of 12 coaches in the state of Georgia to win a title at two different schools.

Prince Avenue was 11-3 and lost in the Class A private championship game to Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy. Head coach Mark Farriba resigned to return to his alma mater, Stratford Academy in Macon.

Herron’s overall record is 242-45 and is set to be announced tomorrow...

Camden, surprisingly to some, lost in the 6A quarter-finals to Norcross in Kingsland as the Blue Devils made their way to a state championship. The team started off strongly, nationally-ranked for a while, with a win over Peachtree Ridge in Week One.

OSG High: Just What Notre Dame Needs, Another Misunderstanding...

((HT: AJC/Carvell))

Stanley Williams is, what draftniks call, a four-star runningback for George Walton Academy- about an hour outside of OSG HQ...

Evidence below...
((HT: GHSA Network))

He declared to UGA a while back, but allegedly took a visit to Notre Dame to take a look at South Bend...

He was even quoted on going by Rivals:

“The visit went great,” Williams told Blue and Gold Illustrated. “It was great to experience something new and different, and we had a great time at the game. I had been looking forward to it for a while, and it was great to just get out there and see a new place. I plan on getting up there a couple more times in the future.

“Before I took the visit I was very interested in them since they were coming by my school and showing interest in me. After taking the visit there, they are definitely high up there on my list and a factor in my recruitment. They’re definitely an option for me to go to. I’m just looking forward to continuing building our relationship.”

One problem... he never went... and was attributed to the following quote

“I felt a lot of pressure to say I had went on the visit...”

In an interview with ESPN's Radi Nabulsi, Williams went on the offensive on the Blue and Gold report:

“Those are incorrect. I never told anyone I was going anywhere I wouldn't be. I approach the media well, and I tell the truth about my recruitment." Williams also said it was a "misunderstanding."

And the last thing Notre Dame's campus needs right now is ANOTHER misunderstanding...

OSG High: 61-Yard FG In Playoffs Round 2

((HT: MyFoxAtlanta))

It's Round 2 of the Georgia High School Association playoffs...

And there were some upsets- one of the largest was the North Gwinnett 28-10 win over season-starting-US-number one Grayson (GA)...

Grayson lost to Parkview at the mid-point of the season and just seemed to get mad...but it took the Bulldogs to stifle them and keep them from a title in 6A...

Another one was the 61-yard field goal from Miles Hemphill that people say would have been good from 65 or so (for the record, the Georgia record belongs to Dax Langley)...

Here's the busy day for Hemphill's right leg...

Unfortunately, East Paulding lost at home to Stephenson 35-6, but Miles Hemphill and his highlight will be around for a while...

OSG High: A Meaningful Touchdown

((HT: The Heard Citizen))

Region 5-AA in Georgia looks like this after last Friday night...

Heard County 6-0 8-0
Bowdon 6-1 8-1
Manchester 5-1 6-2
Spencer 3-3 3-5
Kendrick 3-3 3-5
Bremen 3-4 4-5
Chattahoochee County 1-5 3-5
Temple 1-5 1-7
Jordan 0-6 0-8

Heard County was well on their way to knocking off Temple, 62-27, to keep their place at the top of the table...

Late in the game, the head coach for Temple, Seth Rogers, wanted to put in a sophomore running back with cerebral palsy to give him the same game experience his teammates get.

When Rogers told Braves head coach Tim Barron about what he wanted to do, here's what happened next...

OSG High: Increased Security Seen For Warren-Hancock Rematch

((HT: WJBF-TV Augusta))

The HQ has followed what happened at last year's Hancock Central (Sparta, GA)- Warren County (GA) game and all of its aftermath...

Warren County's head coach, David Daniel, had to resign just before the beginning of the season because he is still battling the injuries he sustained when he was pearl-harbored by a helmet in a post-game brawl.

The Georgia High School Association put Hancock on two year's "severe warning status," issued a fine, and had them come up with a security plan for future events.

And the mess is far from being solved...

The follow-up piece that ran on Georgia Public Broadcasting at halftime of the "Football Fridays" broadcast can be found below...

OSG High: The Growing World Of High School Recruiting

((HT: 11Alive.com))

It's an issue that has been around in high school athletics as long as the modern era of recruiting, transferring, and figuring out what's "best for my kid- the next big thing" has gone down...

What has high school sports become in this modern era...???

Here's FOSG Sam Crenshaw and Matt Pearl explain a busy off-season in the state of Georgia...

But a larger issue has happened in the state of Florida with Armwood High in Seffner. The school is now on the verge of losing its 2011 state football title for having five players ineligible and some of their parents having lied about residency to even play at Armwood. The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) is already calling for a forfeit of all of their games from last season...

Here's the story from our friends at WFTS-TV...

OSG High: Hancock Central Taken To The Woodshed

At least, athletically...

The Georgia High School Association came down with their hammer in the fallout of the Warren County-Hancock Central brawl from the past football season.

The full release is hyah from the GHSA

All Hancock Central sports are now on “Severe Warning Status” for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years. Any major sportsmanship violations will lead to more severe, yet unspecified, penalties.

Hancock Central must also have a written security plan for all football and basketball games sent to the GHSA by July 15. Hancock Central also is being fined an undisclosed amount for lack of institutional control, lack of school personnel on site, and failure to discipline.

Here's the quick version from our friends at WRDW-TV

The GHSA decision was appealed by Hancock Central’s administration but the GHSA Appeal Board denied the appeal.

There are other issues still on the table- the head coach of Warren County, David Daniel, has had to surrender his duties and the civil litigation is in question...

OSG High: Atlanta Area Coach Resigns After Recruiting Accusation

((HT: 11Alive.com Atlanta))

The HQ isn't naive enough to sit there and say that recruiting doesn't go on in high school athletics...

We know it does...

The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has admitted that they are going to crack down on the problem. The incident below isn't the first in the state recently uncovered. The first was in eastern Georgia in the town of LaGrange at Troup High where head coach Charles Flowers resigned after an accusation of bringing in a player from across the border in Alabama to play for his squad.

The one below is from Shiloh High where head coach Brian Montgomery maintains his innocence after four kids he coached at his old job moved 45 minutes away to be with him at his new gig...

OSG High: Georgia Splits Public And Private In Single-A, Now Have 7 Champs

After the idea was presented that a lot of the Class-A (smallest classification as identified through enrollment) schools were planning on seceding and creating the GPSA- the Georgia Public School Association...

OSG HQ covered it initially hyah...

The Georgia High School Association held another meeting of their Executive Council and passed, by a 37-12 vote with one abstention, the idea of splitting Class-A now with a public champion and a private champion to avoid secession and keep the 35 Class-A schools as part of the 405 school dynamic.

Here's reaction from around the state...
First from FOSG Frank Sulkowski
((HT: thecoastalsource.com))

And from 13WMAZ-TV in Macon...

Finally, from FOSG Robert Hydrick and WALB-TV in Albany

ANALYSIS: This isn't the end of this...

Look for some of the private schools to mosey over to the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA)- the private school association that some schools left to go to the greener pastures of the GHSA in the first place.

City schools think they're now in the crosshairs of what's next...

And some members of the Executive Committee voted against the proposal because they felt they didn't have enough time to digest the information about the 2 16-team tourneys that will make up the single-A title games...

And don't be surprised if the state legislature gets involved, either...
They are, after all, in session... it'll give them something to do...

OSG High: GBI Completes Warren County Investigation

((HT: WJBF-TV Augusta))

After completing 135 interviews with anyone they could find that might have been related to the whole Hancock Central-Warren County High ((GA)) football game this past season, the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI) has handed over their findings for grand jury consideration...

Thank (insert divine being here)...

Here's the release from the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit in full...

For those of you who have forgotten the fallout of the brawl, here's the early recap thanks to our friends at WJBF...

The HQ knows Coach Daniel and has found the lack of cooperation from Hancock County authorities until they were forced to start investigating to be both unconscionable and lacking in understanding...

We just have never gotten it from their point of view...
Ever...

And if the Hancock Central folks are found culpable in any way, there oughta be hell to pay on a lot of different levels...

Secession In GHSA...???

405 schools currently have some kind of football program in the Georgia High School Association at present, and the champs were just named this past weekend at the Georgia Dome.

33 schools from Class A (the smallest class) and 5A (the largest class) met in the south central town of Rochelle yesterday to discuss the idea of breaking off from the GHSA because of a perceived lack of action concerning the private school occupation and dominance in the Class A events.

As a side note, all four semi-finalists from Class A this year were private institutions... Savannah Christian, Landmark Christian, Eagles Landing Christian Academy, and Prince Avenue Christian...

FOSG Robert Hydrick was in Rochelle...

And FOSG Darnay Tripp has their version...
((HT: 13WMAZ-TV Macon))

There is talk that a second tier meeting will occur next week with a final decision due by January 4th. All GHSA reclassification appeals are due in to their office a few days later...

Having, practically, one-third of the schools from the smallest classification secede can't be good financially for the GHSA. They would, at the very least, be out close to $11,000 in membership dues alone plus the cut they take from all playoff activities.

A rundown of Class A's future is like this ((courtesy, GHSA)), and the schools that attended the meeting in Rochelle are in bold-face...

So, you see what the secession would do... and what the easiest solution may be is that public schools and private schools stay in their own regions, play crossovers, and when the playoffs arrive- play public versus public and private versus private until the title game where the public champ plays the private champ.

Regions 1 and 2 would stay as is. Region 5 would stay as is. Region 8 could stay as is- minus Commerce (who could be given the option of playing up or moving to roadtripping in region 7). Brookstone and Pacelli could be absorbed into Region 5 leaving Region 4 as is. Region 6 could stay as is- the exceptions being the public schools- Mt. Zion, Carroll, Gordon-Lee, and Trion.

There are very few issues: Calvary Day, Savannah Christian, and Country Day in region 3, are the larger ones. Aquinas can move from one sub-region to the other with Twiggs and Wilkinson moving to Subregion A.

You add a region (7A and 7B), but divide the play until the championship...

And the world is saved- at least, in Single-A...
The HQ is hearing that other schools are putting out feelers as well in high classifications in addition to what Tift County did by attending the meeting...

More when we hear more...
