Welcome Back, College Football!!! GSU Hits Last-Second FG To Snap 16-Game Losing Streak

((HT: gsupanthers Instagram))

Will Lutz punched a chip shot field through the uprights with a handful of seconds to go for Georgia State's 38-37 win over Abilene Christian at the Georgia Dome.

GSU had a 16-game losing streak snapped with the win- their first since a win over Rhode Island in 2012.

Here's how the team celebrated when time ran out...

Now, the team that had their losing streak broken against ACU last year, New Mexico State visits the Georgia Dome next weekend...

Let's see how the Panthers respond...

Report: How about 43-yard Extra Points in Football?

((ht: nfl.com))

Whoa! This suggestion would certainly change the dynamic of NFL football and probably the way kickers are thought of too.

NFL.com reporter Judy Battista says the league is tossing around the idea of moving extra point snaps back from the 2-yard line to the 25. Add on 8-yards to the holder and the 10-yard set back for the goal post and you are looking at 43-yard extra points.

Battista says the league wants to make it more of a challenge since 99.6 percent of all extra points this past season (2013) were good. And apparently while mostly accurate, from the longer range, that accuracy rate drops to 83% (40-49 yds).

Hmmm...

Read more of Battista's report on NFL.com RIGHT HERE

So...what do you think about this? Is it feasible? Does it make you nervous? Does your team have a good enough kicker that you wouldn't have to worry about it?

All good questions. And as much as kickers have a certain stereotype about them...there's also the risk of this:

But if they're good at it...the payoff for things like what happened below. And yeah, it's a pretty good payoff:

So, This Is How You Start Bowl Season...

((HT: ESPN))

Making up a 22-point deficit in the final three minutes to win the New Mexico Bowl...

Jared Roberts made a 41-yard field goal as time expired and Colorado State beat Washington State 48-45 in the New Mexico Bowl.

But, it took a furious comeback that included a strip on defense and a two-point conversion that caught everyone by surprise...
And one that survived a review...
((HT: CSU Rams Athletics))

Garrett Grayson threw for 369 yards and Kapri Bibbs ran for 169 yards (overcame his turf toe) and 3TD's for Colorado State, who finish 8-6. Connor Halliday threw six touchdown passes (5 of them in the first half, by the way) and finished with 410 yards for Washington State, who finish 6-7.

And should be the early poster child for teams that shouldn't be going to a bowl in the first place...

The HQ would set a rule that any team that could finish the season below .500 with a bowl loss shouldn't go to a bowl...

Phil Dawson: Hey, It Was Worth A Shot...

((HT: NFL Network))

The HQ gives Brad Nessler a lot of credit- more than just liking his work in the booth...

At the end of the first half of last night's San Fran-St. Louis game, he presented the option of a free kick after a fair catch for the Niners to add more points on the board before the half...

So, Jim Harbaugh trots out Phil Dawson for a 71-yard free kick...

Eh... it was a good idea...

The last time a kicker tried it was December 28, 2008, when the Packers’ Mason Crosby missed a 69-yarder against Detroit.

The last field goal off a free kick was on November 21, 1976, when the Chargers’ Ray Wersching hit a 45-yarder against Buffalo.

So, there you go...

And the HQ does not get all the blowing up on the Twitter machine over this being a bad idea...

FCS Almost Does It Again At NC State... Notice We Said Almost...

((HT: The ACC))

When NC State kicker Niklas Sade kicked a 48 yard field goal with thirty-three seconds to go... the HQ thought that, when the Wolfpack had 1:52 on the clock to begin with- conventional wisdom was that there was too much time at the start of the drive...

HQ was right...

Dave Doeren is a very lucky man as the Wolfpack win 23-21 over the Richmond Spiders

Here's the highlights...

NC State improves to 2-0 and will get ready to play Clemson on Thursday, September 19th...
A very lucky 2-0...

OSG High: 61-Yard FG In Playoffs Round 2

((HT: MyFoxAtlanta))

It's Round 2 of the Georgia High School Association playoffs...

And there were some upsets- one of the largest was the North Gwinnett 28-10 win over season-starting-US-number one Grayson (GA)...

Grayson lost to Parkview at the mid-point of the season and just seemed to get mad...but it took the Bulldogs to stifle them and keep them from a title in 6A...

Another one was the 61-yard field goal from Miles Hemphill that people say would have been good from 65 or so (for the record, the Georgia record belongs to Dax Langley)...

Here's the busy day for Hemphill's right leg...

Unfortunately, East Paulding lost at home to Stephenson 35-6, but Miles Hemphill and his highlight will be around for a while...

DEVELOPING: David Akers Nails A 63-Yarder (VIDEO)

((HT: NFLonFox/youtube))

It's one of those "Why not?" moments...

End of the half... kinda near the end of the high scale of your field goal kicker's range...

Why not, right...???

David Akers does what's next...

Akers ties Tom Dempsey (1970), Sebastian Janikowski (2011), and Jason Elam (1998) for the record...

Well done, sir... even if there is a doink involved...
