Sprinkler Goes Off Mid Football Game

((HT: ESPNU))

Last night, Mississippi Valley State was taking on Grambling in a rare Thursday night SWAC football game.

Obviously, someone forgot to reprogram the system not to go off for its nightly run- since there were teams playing at the time...

The Delta Devil got in some fun in the endzone

So, as a word of warning to all other football programs- be sure to reset your timers when you play on a funky night

You're Sneaky, Indiana State

((HT: Daniel Shedd))

They actually got the hidden ball trick to WORK!!!

Now, the cool part...

Missouri State led the game 18-17 with less than a minute left in the game when this happened.
The kick return eventually led to the game-winning field goal as Indiana State won 20-18

Murray State Sees You, TCU, And Raises... 86 In A Win

((HT: Murray State Athletics))

The last time the HQ saw Murray State head coach Chris Hatcher was a few years back when he was having ups and downs in Statesboro, Georgia at Georgia Southern. Now, he has taken his high-powered, heavy-speed offense to Murray, Kentucky as the head coach of the OVC's Murray State Racers.

Yesterday, Murray hosted Kentucky Wesleyan and did what Hatch's teams are supposed to do- score a lot of points.

45 unanswered in the second half and 86 overall in an 86-29 win over the visitors.

Surprisingly, the Racers only had 720 yards of total offense on Saturday. Three special teams scores (2 on kickoffs and one on a punt return) also helped the cause.

Murray QB KD Humphries found nine different receivers and threw for 2 scores. Pokey Harris had 10 carries for 184 yards to lead the 408 yard attack for the home team.

Here's the highlights

With some postgame from the head coach...

Hatch's old record for points at Murray was 83 set a few years back.

How About Another FCS Win Over FBS...???

((HT: Patrick Netherton his own self))

We include this one because we can...

P-Netherton is the pay-by-play voice for the Northwestern State (LA) Demons and they were on the road last night at Joe Aillet Stadium to take on Louisiana Tech.

All we needed was a last-second field goal for the upset
The HQ got it...

Well called, sir... congratulations...

And that win puts a big dent in the La Tech bowl ideas...

Our First Hail Mary Win Of The Year

((HT: Bluedogsu))

And it comes from one of the more prestigious HBCU rivalry games of the year...

Jackson State was trailing Florida A&M 17-16 with time running out when this happened...

So, DeSean McKenzie gets the tip drill down and JSU wins 22-17...

"We worked on that — a matter of fact, all of fall camp," first-year head coach Harold Jackson told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger's Ros Dumlao. "It was something we worked on to the right side, and we threw it to the left side this time. And we never worked on it in the left side. ... But it doesn't matter what side we worked on. Hey, it works as long as we come out with a victory."

And, you did...

Here's QB LaMontiez Ivy and McKenzie after the game...

Syracuse Barely Beats Villanova, And We're Talking Football

((HT: ACCDN))

Without their starting QB, it took a failed 2-point conversion in the bottom of the second overtime for Syracuse to barely beat Villanova (otherwise known as FCS/Division I-AA Villanova)), 27-26.

Syracuse starting QB Terrel Hunt got ejected after throwing a punch on Villanova LB Dillon Lucas.
Hunt also received a 15-yard Unnecessary Roughness penalty on the play and it served as a motivator for the decidedly underdog Wildcats.

While it wasn't the six OT thriller in the Big East tourney, it certainly was a renewal of the rivalry- if only for a night.

First-Timers On The Field: Mercer, Berry, and Reinhardt...

The HQ has always been one of those places where we like to hidden gems, stories that are cool, just off the trail, and a champion for those places that have their niches...

Is it "Nitch" or "Neesh," we digress...

And having been in the circles of a few places over the past few weeks, it's fun to see new shiny things as the HQ hopes the novelty doesn't quite wear off when the newness does...

First stop was Mercer University in Macon- the first time that football would be on campus in 70-plus years. They played Reinhardt University. Mercer is a developing Division I program coached by Bobby Lamb that is in the Pioneer League this year as they move forward into Division I-AA next year. Reinhardt is working their way in the NAIA ranks in the Mid-South Conference in football and the AAC in every other sport.

The Eagles brought in long time Georgia high school head coach Danny Cronic who went to Reinhardt when it was a junior college. He has a roster that is full of Georgia kids (only 6 are not from the state) in their roster of 130 athletes. The first game for both was a 40-37 shootout in front of a crowd of just under 13,000.

Here's their recap, thanks to FOSG Andy Stabell...
((HT: Mercer Bears))

Reinhardt moved on from there to have their home opener against Lindsay Wilson in Waleska.

So, if you look at Berry College, Reinhardt, and Mercer...

You see three schools in varying degrees of business (which is what athletics are these days) and hoping they all move their audiences to being around on a consistent basis.

They'll all be royal pains to their more experienced squads they have on their schedules this season- and all the coaching staffs are solid and know what will put people in the seats...

Home grown talent... something the HQ notices is lacking in their larger brotherhood...

Sometimes, it's guys like Lamb, Cronic, and Kunczewski that could teach Division I power conferences a thing a two about building their fan bases...

And that's the cool part- in addition to being entertaining...
See you on the field...

FCS Almost Does It Again At NC State... Notice We Said Almost...

((HT: The ACC))

When NC State kicker Niklas Sade kicked a 48 yard field goal with thirty-three seconds to go... the HQ thought that, when the Wolfpack had 1:52 on the clock to begin with- conventional wisdom was that there was too much time at the start of the drive...

HQ was right...

Dave Doeren is a very lucky man as the Wolfpack win 23-21 over the Richmond Spiders

Here's the highlights...

NC State improves to 2-0 and will get ready to play Clemson on Thursday, September 19th...
A very lucky 2-0...

Southern Utah Wins At The Gun In Mobile

((HT: XOS College Sports))

South Alabama is now a full-fledged member of the Sun Belt Conference... which means games matter in their first full season as a Division I school (or FBS, or whatever you call it...)

Southern Utah came to Mobile in their season opener and made sure the Jags remembered who they invited...

Last-second field goals for the win will do that for you...

Southern Utah went 54 yards in the final 4:43 to the South Alabama 11 where Colton Cook kicked a 28-yard field goal on the game's final play for the win...

"We lost a very important ballgame tonight. We're a better team, but we have to look at ourselves and evaluate what we're doing. We're going to have to win some close games to have a good year this year, and that was one we let slip by," USA Head coach Joey Jones said postgame.

Here's the highlights...

"Everyone is disappointed. Everyone is just tired of seeing this happen," DE Alex Page admitted. "We want t make a change. We thought we had it all together, but we made some mistakes. We backed off a little bit. It's just motivation to come together and really make a change, because I don't want my senior year to be like this the whole time."

The Jags were 2-11 last year and their next game is at Tulane next Saturday...

Is Division I Football Sure About This Whole UConn Thing...???

((HT: AKM Sports Media))

Especially after Towson beat an NCAA division I team for the first time as UConn lost 33-18 at home to the Tigers...

There was certainly a great deal of optimism with opening night...
((HT: WTNH-TV))

But that was squashed for most of the evening at Rentschler Field as Terrance West ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns- both in the fourth quarter. QB Peter Athens threw for 192 yards and another score. Running back Sterlin Phifer caught a 23-yard touchdown and ran for another.

The Huskies had not lost to an FCS team since 2001, when they were making the transition from Division I-AA to Division I.

Here's your Towson postgame with Towson head football coach Rob Ambrose, West and defensive lineman Jon Desir

UConn now gets Maryland and Michigan before a game against Buffalo. If the win doesn't happen there, it may not happen until the season finale against Memphis.

ODU QB Throws For D1 Record 730 Yards

((HT: WAVY-TV))

The HQ continues to marvel at OSG High graduate, Collins Hill (GA) High's Taylor Heinecke...

All he did this week was throw for an NCAA Division I record 730 yards in a come-from-behind, 64-61 win against top 20 team New Hampshire... but it still took a Jarod Brown chip shot field goal and a last-second pick to seal it.

His passing numbers were just one yard less than the overall record of 731 set by D3 Menlo (CA) College's Zamir Amin against Cal Lutheran in 2000. The old Division I record of 716 yards was by Houston's David Klingler in 1990 against Arizona State. The D I-AA/FCS record was 624 set by Weber State's Jamie Martin against Idaho State in 1991.

Got all that...??? There'll be a test later on...

Heinecke also ran the ball 11 times for 61 yards. So, that means the 791 yards of total offense beats the 732 by David Klingler in that same game in 1990, and the I-AA/FCS record was 668 total yards by Robert Kent of Jackson State against Alabama in 2001.

Until today...

Here's the highlights... The HQ thinks it's the short version...

ODU comes from behind in 64-61 win

RECORD BREAKER: ODU's Taylor Heinicke Throws For NCAA D-1 Record 730 Yards In 64-61 Win Over New Hampshire

Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke put together an entire season in one game.  Heinicke threw for an NCAA division one record 730 yards in the Monarchs 64-61 win over New Hampshire.
Here’s a game report. (Thanks WAVY-TV)

Heinicke broke the NCAA Division one record held by Houston’s David Klinger who threw for 716 yards against Arizona State in 1990.  Heinicke was just one yard shy of the all-division record set by Zamir Amin of Menlo (Div. III) who passed for 731 yards against Cal Lutheran in 2000.
The passing yards record wasn’t the only one Heinicke broke today.  His 61 yards rushing gave Heinicke 791 yards of total offense breaking Klinger’s FBS record of 732 set in the ASU game in 1990.
While ODU accumulated 824 yards of total offense New Hampshire totaled 725 yards of total offense.  That added up to an NCAA FCS record of 1,549 yards of total offense.  The previous mark was 1,423 in a game featuring Murray State (816) and Missouri State (607) back on October. 9, 2010.
The defensive coordinators for the Monarchs and the Wildcats are going to have a lot to say during film sessions.

OSG I-AA: It's Bearkats And Bison In Frisco

((HT: KFBB-TV Helena))

When you can't stop the Sam Houston State running game, you're in trouble...
And the Montana Grizzlies were in trouble Friday night in Texas...

Here's the long version as to how...

The other semi had too many turnovers for Georgia Southern's liking as they traveled to North Dakota State and lost 35-7...

It was the biggest game in the history of the program...
And we post these highlights much to the dismay of Brother Phil...
((HT: Valleynewslive.com/Fargo))

Now, all they have to do is find their way to Frisco, Texas (wherever in the blue hell that is) by JANUARY 7th...???

Good for y'all...

OSG I-AA: Ga Southern Rolls To The Semis...

((HT: The Coastal Source))

The HQ just likes saying "Jaybo..."

Jaybo Shaw ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Georgia Southern to a 35-23 win over Maine in Statesboro.

Georgia Southern will travel to Fargo, North Dakota to face North Dakota State next Saturday in the semifinals.

FOSG Frank Sulkowski has the post-game...

North Dakota State shut out Lehigh 24-0, Sam Houston State took out Montana State, and Montana beat Northern Iowa...

Here's your Griz look back...

OSG I-AA: Another Round Down- Ga Southern, Busy Day In Montana, North Dakota

The HQ can say we covered Georgia Southern QB Jaybo Shaw in his high school days along with freshman running back Dominique Swope...

Both went off yesterday against fellow OSG HQ'er Old Dominion freshman QB Taylor Heinecke in a 55-48 win in Statesboro. It was the first 200-plus yard effort for an Eagles RB since 2007... 255 to be exact...

Here's how WAVY-TV in Hampton Roads treated Heinecke's homecoming...

Heinicke's homecoming: wavy.com

It was a busy and successful day for Montana schools as the Griz worked over Central Arkansas and Montana State needed some long arms to advance against UNH.
((HT: KFBB-TV Helena))

Rough day for the Colonial teams as James Madison had to go north to take on the Bison, but lost 26-14...
((HT: Valleynewslive.com Fargo))

The quarterfinals have Maine going to Georgia Southern and Lehigh going to ND State on the right-hand side. The left-hand side has Northern Iowa going to Montana and Sam Houston State hosting Montana State.

OSG I-AA: Another Round Down- ODU, Madison, Stony Brook, Central Ark

The HQ covered Old Dominion QB Taylor Heinecke at Collins Hill High School outside Atlanta. He had a big day as a true freshman in the I-AA playoffs in their win over Norfolk State...
((HT: WVEC-TV))

Cameron Starke kicked a 35-yard field goal as time expired to lift James Madison to a 20-17 win over Eastern Kentucky in the first round of the I-AA playoffs.

James Madison (8-4) rallied from a 17-10 deficit in the fourth
quarter. The Dukes, who have won three straight games, will face North
Dakota State in the second round...

Here's the highlights, thanks to our friends at WHSV-TV

Stony Brook and Central Arkansas also advance...

OSG I-AA: Number One Falls At Boone

((HT: WTOC-TV Savannah))

Georgia Southern travelled to Boone, NC but came up short in losing to App State, 24-17. But, as we all know, a lot of people do that...

The Eagles tied the score at 17 but the home team returned the favor to go back up 7. App State's defense stopped the Eagles three times in a row in the 4th quarter.

Jamal Jackson threw three touchdown passes for the Mountaineers who improve to 6-2, 4-1. The win avenges last year's win by the Eagles in Statesboro that ended the Mountaineers' 29-game conference win streak.

The Eagles are now 5-1 in the Southern Conference.
Next week, the Eagles are home against The Citadel.

Here's the highlights...
Ken Griner is standing...
