Bison Busted. North Dakota State's 33 Game Winning Streak Ended By Northern Iowa 23-3

The law of averages finally caught up to the North Dakota State Bison.

NDSU's Football Championship Subdivision record 33 game winning streak died today at Northern Iowa as the Panthers defeated the Bison 23-3.

North Dakota State couldn't anything going in the UNI Dome.  The Bison totaled only 175 yards of total offense and held to their lowest point total since a 3-0 loss to Missouri State in the 2010 season finale.

Northern Iowa was led by running back David Johnson who rushed for 133 yards on 28 carries.

"This is really sweet," Johnson said.

Johnson will go do as one of the best running backs in UNI history.  During the game he surpassed the 1,000 yard mark for the third consecutive season becoming the first Panther back to do that.

Panther kicker Michael Schmadeke kicked three field goals of 43, 36 and 42 yards.

Northern Iowa head coach Mark Farley thanked the Panther fans.

Murray State Sees You, TCU, And Raises... 86 In A Win

((HT: Murray State Athletics))

The last time the HQ saw Murray State head coach Chris Hatcher was a few years back when he was having ups and downs in Statesboro, Georgia at Georgia Southern. Now, he has taken his high-powered, heavy-speed offense to Murray, Kentucky as the head coach of the OVC's Murray State Racers.

Yesterday, Murray hosted Kentucky Wesleyan and did what Hatch's teams are supposed to do- score a lot of points.

45 unanswered in the second half and 86 overall in an 86-29 win over the visitors.

Surprisingly, the Racers only had 720 yards of total offense on Saturday. Three special teams scores (2 on kickoffs and one on a punt return) also helped the cause.

Murray QB KD Humphries found nine different receivers and threw for 2 scores. Pokey Harris had 10 carries for 184 yards to lead the 408 yard attack for the home team.

Here's the highlights

With some postgame from the head coach...

Hatch's old record for points at Murray was 83 set a few years back.

ICYMI: Temple Unversity Drops 7 Sports

And the non-big time BCS schools continue struggling to stay competitive.

Temple University announced on Friday the school would drop 7 sports in an effort to control costs.

Baseball, men's crew, men's gymnastics, men's outdoor and indoor track and field and women's softball and rowing are the sports impacted by the cuts. 150 athletes and 9 coaches are left without a program at the Philadelphia area school.

For their part, Temple says they don't have the money to upgrade their facilities in all their sports facilities, so they decided to concentrate on the ones they considered the most important. The school is a member of the American Athletic Conference.

Temple's football and basketball programs are the biggest programs. The football team has struggled mightily over the past few seasons and to Temple's defense, the cost of maintaining a top flight program is pretty steep.

But this is an indicator of an oncoming problem in college sports. Football is very profitable for SOME, but not most Division 1 schools. If you are a lower tier program in a smaller FCS conference that doesn't get the mega-TV deal, you struggle. And eventually it takes a toll on the school, it's budget and the athletics department.

You will see this happening more and more over the next few years....
