Tsarnaev Friend Found Guilty Of Lying To Investigators

((HT: MyFoxBoston))

If you haven't heard the name Robel Phillipos, you probably need to file it away as someone you need to know about...

After six days of deliberating, Robel Phillipos, a friend of the Tsarnaev brothers, was found guilty on both counts of lying to investigators about being in Dzokhar Tsarnaev's dorm room while two other friends removed a backpack containing potential evidence after the April 15, 2013, Boston Marathon attack.

The bombs placed near the marathon finish line killed three people and injured more than 260.

Phillipos had an interesting defense- marijuana consumption.

Here's the latest on the verdict- albeit a very mixed one...

He is facing up to 16 years in prison and a verdict will be given in late January- the same month the Tsarnaev trial is set to begin.
Phillipos will be held under house arrest until then.

Yep, Josh Shaw Made The Story Up...

((HT: KABC-TV/MyFoxLA))

Shaw has been suspended indefinitely from team activities...

"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," said USC head football coach Steve Sarkisian in a statement. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story.

"I appreciate that Josh has now admitted that he lied and has apologized. Although this type of behavior is out of character for Josh, it is unacceptable. Honesty and integrity must be at the center of our program. I believe Josh will learn from this. I hope that he will not be defined by this incident, and that the Trojan Family will accept his apology and support him."

It will be interesting to find out just how long "suspended indefinitely" means in the USC football-sense...

Remember when we had faith in humanity...???
Los Angeles News | FOX 11 LA KTTV

From Bryan D. Fischer, here's the statement from Shaw through his attorney Donald Etra:

“I injured myself in a fall. I made up a story about this fall that was untrue,” Shaw said. “I was wrong to not tell the truth. I apologize to USC for this action on my part.”

"My USC coaches, the USC Athletic Department, and especially coach Sarkisian have all been supportive of me during my college career and for that, I am very grateful."

USC has also apologized for posting the original story on their website. The story had been removed Wednesday from the link where it was originally posted on the USC website.

Aaron Hernandez Associate Arrested On Lying To Grand Jury

((HT: WHDH-TV))

And obstruction of justice and witness tampering involved with the investigation around the Odin Lloyd murder...

Nice hat trick...

Allegedly...

Oscar Hernandez, Junior (no relation to the ex-Patriots tight end) was arrested as a part of a gun trafficking investigation from Florida to Massachusetts. Three firearms involved in the shooting have been linked to the murder of Lloyd and Hernandez is charged with influencing the testimony of the man who reportedly sold the weapons.

Here's the early returns on the arrest...
WHDH-TV 7News Boston

Hernandez could get up to 20 years in prison on the witness tampering charges, up to 10 years on obstruction charges and up to five for false testimony.

He is set to appear in a court in Orlando to determine if bond will be allowed- and what amount that will be. He should be extradited to Massachusetts to face the charges after that, but the timetable isn't known for that part of the process at present.

Masiello In Trouble At USF And Manhattan

Manhattan head coach Steve Masiello had to face his mentor Rick Pitino in the first round of this year's March NCAA tournament in one of those 4-13 match-ups... and it wasn't really fair...

But Masiello got to parlay the Jaspers success into a job offer from the University of South Florida- who was looking at a replacement for Stan Heath...

Problem...

Masiello's resume claims that he majored in communications and graduated from Kentucky in 2000. However, in the verification process, USF found out that Masiello did not in fact graduate from UK...

The job offer from USF has been withdrawn and he is now on administrative leave at Manhattan...

"The agreement was pending a verification of credentials," South Florida said in a statement. "Through the verification process it was determined the candidate's credentials could not be substantiated and therefore he did not meet the requirements for the position."

"As a result of a background check commissioned by the University of South Florida, Manhattan College has learned there is a question of the validity of head men's basketball coach Steve Masiello's undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky," reads a statement from Manhattan. "Masiello is currently in the process of reviewing his degree status with the University of Kentucky. Manhattan College has placed Masiello on leave while he completes this process with the university."
