Morning Wrap: Louisville RB Dyer Ruled Ineligible--Again

((ht: courier-journal.com))

The saga of former Auburn/Arkansas State/Lousiville RB Michael Dyer may have reached an end.

Dyer was ruled academically ineligible for Louisville's Belk Bowl game with Georgia next week. The  senior was the 2nd leading rusher for the Cardinals and had missed the 1st three games of the season due to a thigh injury.

Dyer's journey through college was confusing and seemingly always filled with trouble. He began at Auburn where he got playing time on the Tigers 2010 National Championship team. At that point his future looked bright.

But when then offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn briefly left to coach at Arkansas State, Dyer followed. He had some success there, but eventually was dismissed from that team due to academic and other issues.

He landed at Louisville in 2013, but didn't play much his first season due to injuries.

Tuesday Night Football: La-Lafayette Beats Ark. State in Bizzare Game

((ht: espn.com))

Just having a game on a Tuesday night is weird enough. Seeing the highlights of the Lousiana-Lafayette vs. Arkansas State Red Wolves game, was flat out bizarre.

The Ragin Cajuns got the 55-40 win, but the strange plays were everywhere. Red Wolves RB Michael Gordon scored on a 70-yard TD run in the 2nd quarter--but only after being wrestled to the ground near the line of scrimmage. Or so we thought. Gordon actually landed on top of a pile of his own players and never touched the ground. So he just rolled up and sped to the end zone untouched.

It also featured another bizarre Arkansas State play where on a reverse, the guy making the last handoff, punctuated it with a full summersault.

And lest we forget the fake punt. The Red Wolves inexplicably tried a fake punt while near their own end zone. And unlike a couple weeks ago against Miami where the pass was intercepted, this one was complete. However it only went for a yard.

The Cajuns got the ball on their 6 and scored on the next play.

Elijah McGuire was the star of the game, running for 265 yards and 4 TD's on only 16 carries for La.-Laf, who remain 3-0 in the Sun Belt conference, tied with newcomers Georgia Southern, who are not eligible for a bowl invite.

Sun Belt Tourney: Ark State Takes Down Little Rock in 4 O.T's

((ht: sunbeltsports.org))

No, the SunBelt conference isn't exactly a glamor conference when it comes to College Basketball, but Friday night, in the conference tournament quarterfinals, there was a game for the ages.

Arkansas State took down Arkansas Little-Rock 116-114 in 4 Overtimes behind Melvin Johnson III's 19 points. Johnson hit what would end up being the game winning 3 pointer with 6 seconds to go.

Yes, 4 O.T's.

The game featured two buzzer beaters, missed free throws down the stretch and Little Rock not being able to get off a shot to close the 4th overtime.

And as a reward for that effort, the play conference top seed Georgia State Saturday afternoon in the conference semis--

Developing: Gus Malzahn gets Auburn job

((ht: auburn.247sports.com))

Okay. The carousel is spinning fast this Tuesday afternoon.

Reports have surfaced that Auburn has found THEIR new head coach. That man is former offensive coordinator and Arkansas St. head coach Gus Malzahn.

**Updated (slightly)--This is verified now by multiple outlets**

Malzahn of course is very familiar to the Auburn faithful after 3 seasons of success running his high-speed, no-huddle, spread offense. That success translated this year to Arkansas State where Malzahn went 9-3 and won the Sun Belt Championship in his first season as a head coach on the college level.

He of course replacs the departed Gene Chizik, who despite an enormous payout, was fired after Auburn went 3-9 and winless during this past football season. We might also add the school appears to again be in the NCAA crosshairs as they are being investigated for alleged recruiting violations.

By the way Chizik is talking to Florida State about becoming their new defensive coordinator.

Bo Pelini taken from Nebraska game via ambulance

((ht: journalstar.com))

As of this writing, University of Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini is resting comfortably in a Lincoln, Nebraska hospital after being taken from the stadium to the hospital via ambulance.

The Lincoln Journal-Star reports the 911 call at the stadium said Pelini was suffering from "Flu-Like Symptoms" and that Pelini's family was rushed away from the stadium early in the 3rd quarter of Saturday's game vs. Arkansas State.

He told ESPN during his halftime interview that he wasn't feeling well, but was O.K.

By the way, Nebraska won the game 42-13.

Read the Journal Star story RIGHT HERE

For what it is worth, Nebraska A.D Tom Osborne relayed that he was told Pelini would be fine and just needed some rest. The school released a statement from Pelini later saying "He would be at practice on Sunday."

Since it doesn't appear (Yet) that there is video of Pelini leaving via ambulance, KETV provides us with video of Osborne addressing the media after the game:

Ark State Gets $1M Payday At Nebraska

The HQ has known about all these early-season games being paydays for the team that supposedly is going to get creamed...

Savannah State, for example, is clearing in the neighborhood of $800,000 for their two beat downs in Stillwater and Tallahassee. Ess-E-Cee schools are notorious for higher paydays than the average bears and the Arkansas State-Nebraska game is no different...

Only moreso...

Howzabout a cool million for The Slinging Malzahn's to show up for their game against the Cornhuskers...???

"We believe that Arkansas State is a decent program and will provide an attractive non-conference matchup," Dr. Tom Osborne said when asked. "We probably could have gotten a lesser opponent for less money but are trying to maintain a reasonably strong schedule."

Florida Atlantic is getting a million bucks this week (to lose to Georgia) and next week (to lose to Alabama)...

In the mean time, Ark State has their head set on making Nebraska one-dimensional Saturday...

DEVELOPING: Trooper In Dyer Investigation Fired

Royce Denney, the Arkansas State Trooper who pulled over Arkansas State running back Michael Dyer, was fired from his job after an internal investigation.

In his termination letter, it was disclosed that Denney violated policy when he purposely turned off his in-car camera recording system, confiscating the gun found in Dyer's car without legal justification, and by not properly disposing of "potential drug evidence" found during the stop. It was apparent that marijuana and a pistol were found during the stop, according to KATV in Little Rock.

Colonel JR Howard, director of the Arkansas State Police, said in his dismissal letter: "Your conduct and repeated demonstrations of lack of judgment clearly shows that you are unable to conform to the standards of professionalism that is expected of a commissioned officer of the Arkansas State Police. Accordingly, your employment is hereby terminated."

Here's the dashcam video that got Denney in trouble...

Dyer Out At Ark State, Pitt State Next...??? (UPDATED With Investigation And Dash Cam Video)

((HT: TodaysTHV.com/AUFamily.com))

So much for that idea...

Michael Dyer, who was dismissed from Auburn for a violation of team rules, has been dismissed from the Arkansas State squad for violating team rules.

Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn announced the decision Saturday, saying: "I am truly disappointed that it didn't work out here at ASU for Mike. I wish Mike nothing but the best in the future."

Dyer wasn't eligible to play this season for the Indians Red Wolves after the NCAA denied his request to play immediately at a lesser Division I school.

Draft Board Insider had mentioned previously that Dyer was thinking about a transfer to Pittsburg ((KS)) State in Division II, but that died down over the furor over double transfers in one calendar year.

Now that he has been "dismissed" from Ark State, it will be interesting where he ends up so he can play THIS season, which was his idea this season anyway...

That leaves DII, DIII, or the NAIA... much like Willie Williams who the HQ has seen at Da-U and Union College ((KY))...

Here's Malzahn discussing his now-former tailback a few weeks ago...
((HT: ArkansasSports360))

MONDAY UPDATE: Arkansas State Police are investigating the March 10 traffic stop where Dyer was pulled over for going 96-in-a-70 where police allegedly found drug paraphernalia in his car. Trooper Royce Denny is now under investigation in connection with the incident with Dyer and Ronnie Wright.

At one point of the dashcam video obtained through a public records request, Denny apparently says, "…Carrying weed with you. Carrying a pistol around. It ain't cool... you got a career ahead of you. You're being a total dumb*** right now. You're being stupid."

Here's the clip, Dyer's interaction is at the 7:00 mark...

Coaching Carousel: Report: Malzahn to Arkansas St.

((ht: nationalfootballauthority.com))
Gus Malzahn

**Updated 10:15pm**--Nearly every media outlet that reports on such things, confirm the Malzahn hiring. Just so you know.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Really? Gus Malzahn, offensive coordinator to the stars. Genius coach who helped Auburn win the National Championship in 2010 and allegedly had offers to coach at Vanderbilt and others and he's taking the job at Arkansas State?

The National Football Authority says it is a done deal. The deal is reportedly a $750K per year job or about 2/3 of what Malzahn was making at Auburn.

Read the story from the NFA RIGHT HERE

Now. We will add that multiple outlets are reporting the job was offered. Arkansas Sports 360 says that it has only been offered. Read their story RIGHT HERE

Al.com says he's being considered along with Florida State running back coach Eddie Gran. You can read that story RIGHT HERE

Many Sportswriters seem perplexed that Malzahn would take the job, but it really wouldn't be a total shock if you read between the lines. Malzahn is after all FROM Arkansas. It's home and $750K plus a nice house in a Country Club may be all he wants.

Sure, he could potentially have the fame and glory of coaching in the SEC or ACC, but it isn't for everyone. The bigger question may very well be what is going on at Auburn. They struggled to a 6-6 record this past season and Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof has already left to go to UCF. With Malzahn gone, it leaves Auburn coach Gene Chizik with the responsibility for hiring people to fill his two top positions.
