Former Minnesota Vikings player Orlando Thomas passed away from ALS Sunday night at the age of 42.
Thomas, who played with the Vikings for 7 years after attending the now Louisiana-Lafayette, started in the league in 1995, he led the NFL with 9 interceptions that season.
He retired from the team after the 2001 season ended
Thomas was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and fought a long and valiant battle with the disease. His agent, Mark Bartelstein said Thomas was down to 70lbs when he passed away.
The Vikings released a statement on the team website:
“The Vikings are deeply saddened by the loss of Orlando Thomas. Orlando was an outstanding player for the Vikings for seven years, but more importantly, he represented the franchise and the state of Minnesota with the utmost dignity and class. While his outgoing personality made him a favorite among his teammates, Orlando’s involvement in the community made him a favorite outside of Winter Park.
“Since 2007, Orlando fought this disease with tenacity and optimism. Throughout his difficult battle, he refused to allow ALS to define him, instead putting others’ needs in front of his and focusing on making those around him smile.
“Orlando will always remain a member of the Minnesota Vikings family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Demetra and their family.”

Tuesday Night Football: La-Lafayette Beats Ark. State in Bizzare Game

Just having a game on a Tuesday night is weird enough. Seeing the highlights of the Lousiana-Lafayette vs. Arkansas State Red Wolves game, was flat out bizarre.
The Ragin Cajuns got the 55-40 win, but the strange plays were everywhere. Red Wolves RB Michael Gordon scored on a 70-yard TD run in the 2nd quarter--but only after being wrestled to the ground near the line of scrimmage. Or so we thought. Gordon actually landed on top of a pile of his own players and never touched the ground. So he just rolled up and sped to the end zone untouched.
It also featured another bizarre Arkansas State play where on a reverse, the guy making the last handoff, punctuated it with a full summersault.
And lest we forget the fake punt. The Red Wolves inexplicably tried a fake punt while near their own end zone. And unlike a couple weeks ago against Miami where the pass was intercepted, this one was complete. However it only went for a yard.
The Cajuns got the ball on their 6 and scored on the next play.
Elijah McGuire was the star of the game, running for 265 yards and 4 TD's on only 16 carries for La.-Laf, who remain 3-0 in the Sun Belt conference, tied with newcomers Georgia Southern, who are not eligible for a bowl invite.

Cupcake Saturday: LaTech RB goes 99-Yards for TD
Safe to say, Saturday September 6th won't go down as a day of amazingly competitive college football.
Yeah, sure, there were a few good games (USC/Stanford, Oregon/Mich. St, Ohio St/VaTech), but most of the games...were blowouts.
There were a few amazing plays and a lot of dull ones.
One of the best: How about Kenneth Dixon of Lousiana Tech....he lines up deep in his own end zone, takes the pitch, makes two moves and goes untouched...99 yards for the TD.
Tech would beat the Ragin' Cajuns 48-20...

Speaking Of CWS History: Here's One For Jackson State

They've lost since, but Jackson State got their first-ever win in College World Series history against 6th-national seed Louisiana-Lafayette in Lafayette, 1-0.
The HQ has covered the rough season the JSU team has had- that all started with their bus burning to the ground on the side of the road with their equipment in it. Other Mississippi schools pitched in and have given them the basics to get through their season. The group have galvanized and have run through everyone since.

The Battle To Be The University of Louisiana: La.Lafayette vs. La. Monroe

Oh boy. The Lovely Bride may get upset at me saying this, but "Only in Louisiana".
It appears that the University of Louisiana at Lafayette may be in a bit of trouble with it's state legislature and with other state schools.
In a rather lengthy story in the Monroe News-Star, reporter Tabby Soignier goes into detail to explain what the Rajun Cajuns have done to anger some folks.
The school has apparently made a concerted effort to market themselves as UL or University of Louisiana, leaving out the Lafayette part.
The problem, it's a violation of state law. And the University of Louisiana at Monroe, well, they aren't too thrilled about it either.
The Cajuns have been sticklers with ESPN and others about using the "UL" branding while talking about them, something that the folks at the 4-letter kind of balked at. The Warhawks in Monroe, well, their complaint is it makes them sound like a sister school.
According to Soignier, the state came up with the law, to keep one school from proclaiming itself the state's "Flagship" school. Though we are pretty sure, LSU has more name recognition than all the directional Louisiana schools combined.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The law appears to not state a penalty for doing this, the question is, how far will the calling out go?
We get Monroe's argument, and quite honestly it's a valid one, that they don't want to be considered a "Little Sister".
Conversely, Lafayette, which has had some success on the national stage of late, we get why they are trying to do this too.
Our guess is this has the makings of a regional war, the fun part is going to be seeing how far all three sides in this debate are going to be willing to take it.

Ragin' Cajuns win the New Orleans Bowl
This made The Lovely Bride's day.....
Lousiana-Lafayette (her alma mater) won their second straight bowl game Saturday afternoon, holding off the East Carolina Pirates 43-34.
For those who didn't watch this, it was actually a pretty good game, with the Ragin' Cajuns getting out to an early 21 point lead before the Pirates clawed their way back.
The game came down to a 4th down play with just over 2:30 left when Melvin White knocked down Pirate QB Shane Carden's pass to WR Andrew Bodenheimer.
Once again, Ragin' Cajuns QB Terrance Broadway was the star, going 21-31 for 316 yds and a TD along with running for 108 yds and a TD.
The win game La.Laf it's second straight 9-win season and more than likely assures head coach Mark Hudspeth as being a hot coaching commodity for next seasons version of the Coaching Carousel.

Your athletic department asks for more time to go to a bowl game and doesn't get to go bowling period in a slam-dunk situation to get a payday when they either asked for more time and didn't get it or turned down a bowl bid...
A local opportunity at that...

Okay, Really... What Was Louisiana-Lafayette Thinking...???

The HQ saw this happen week one and thought, out loud, that the Florida Gators were going to have a long year...
Remember how Miami (OH) (or was it Bowling Green...??? #MACtion runs all together in our collective consciousness) kept even with the Gators in Gainesville until early in the fourth quarter...
The whole "depth" thing kept the visitors from making their mark early on...
The same could be said with La-Laf...
Not afraid to play anybody, the Ragin's have played at Oklahoma State this year as part of their paydays and went toe-to-toe with UF- even holding the lead for most of the second half...
Leading 20-13, Jeff Driskel three a TD pass to tie things up with 102 seconds to go, but something happened on the way to free football...
Here's Jelani Jenkins becoming the hero and saving Florida's season...

Louisiana-Lafayette Uses Sixth Man - Literally - To Defeat Western Kentucky 72-70 In OT (Updated- Coach Fired))

Short version--AD Ross Bjork says he didn't like the direction the program (5-11 this season) was heading.

Louisiana Lafayette had six players on the floor when the Cajins Elfrid Payton drove and hit a lay up with 3.4 seconds left to secure ULL's 72-70 overtime win over Western Kentucky.

We never thought we'd say this but: Arizona survived La-Laf yesterday as Nick Foles threw for over 350 yards in a shootout...

Notre Dame isn't that good, and Stanford proved it in their 28-14 win last night. Andrew Luck threw for 231 yards and a handful of scores. The HQ wonders how much of Brian Kelly's divided team is responsible...
