ICYMI: Oregon Outscores Cal in Friday Night CFB

This would be the reason why though we like Oregon, we don't think IF they make the College Football playoff, they'll last very long.

On the strength of 5 TD passes by quarterback Marcus Mariota, the Oregon Ducks outscored Cal 59-41 Friday night moving them to 7-1 on the season, 4-1 in the Pac 12.

The game featured 1150 yards of offense and 21 penalties and probably finished long after most of the East Coast was sleeping.

Much like Baylor, who can score with anyone, the Ducks are dangerous as heck. Mariota is arguably the best quarterback in College Football. But he can't play defense, which over the years has been the one thing that's kept Oregon from winning titles.

We'll see if Oregon can run the table. If they do, the Ducks will surely be one of the four playoff teams. But then again, we aren't even in November yet....

But Connor Halliday may become the college football equivalent of former Florida State pitcher Richie Lewis if he keeps up like this...

Lewis, for those of you who don't remember, was put on the mound in Omaha for the clinching game in the College World Series on less-than-normal rest (2 days, the HQ thinks), throwing an ungodly amount of pitches in a loss, and was not the same pitcher when he was drafted by Montreal.

Cal's Jared Goff completed 47 of 53 passes for 527 yards and five touchdowns, also without an interception. Combined, Halliday and Goff set a new single-game FBS record for total passing yards with 1,261. And the all-NCAA mark is 736 yards set by D3's Sam Durley of Eureka-Illinois.

It seemed to be all about comebacks and close ones Saturday...

First, for those of us who play fantasy college football Wazzu's Connor Halliday is usually a solid selection. Last week was no different as Halliday threw for 4 TD's ana orchestrated a fourth quarter comeback as the Cougs beat Utah 28-27.

And Cal and Colorado didn't seem to be able to stop each other for an entire afternoon. The game 14 TD passes by the two teams and it took six quarters to decide a game that had 115 total points.

Cal DB Taken Away In Ambulance After Hit, Has Feeling In Extremities

Jeff Faraudo was around at Cal practice today and Cal defensive back Avery Sebastian had to be taken off the field in an ambulance after a head-to-head hit with running back Jeffrey Coprich.

Sebastian, from the suburban Atlanta, Georgia town of McDonough was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland.

For more than 15 minutes it appeared Sebastian was motionless. He was eventually strapped to a gurney, his head immobilized, and then was taken away from the scrimmage.

The only quote associated with the injury by head coach Sonny Dykes was: "We don't have any idea the severity of it. As soon as we know something, we'll put out a statement."

According to ESPN's Brett McMurphy, through his Twitter feed, has Sebastian experiencing movement in all of his extremities and the school anticipates he'll be released soon...

Pre-Carousel: Cal Fires Jeff Tedford

Sometimes 12-years with a College Football program is too much. In fact in major conference college football it often is.

12-years for Jeff Tedford at Cal was exactly that: Too long.

Tedford was fired Tuesday morning as the Golden Bears limped through a 3-9 season. And yes, the school owes him money. A lot of money. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $7 million for the next three years.

Tedford made a name for himself as the groomer of quarterbacks. While at Oregon as an assistant, he groomed Joey Harrington. At Cal, his biggest success was Aaron Rodgers.

The Golden Bears just moved into a fully renovated stadium and the losses moved the school to try and find someone else to ignite the fire and get people back into the stadium.

No real early speculation on a front-runner to replace him, though the Coaching Carousel will not begin in full until the regular season ends next week and many more coaching jobs come open.
