Ga.Tech Dominates Mississippi State in Orange Bowl

((ht: espn.com))

For all the SEC fans out there who won't hear of their beloved league not being dominant, a new reality may be here. The vaunted college football league is 1-4 this bowl season vs. the ACC.

One reason for that, Friday nights Orange Bowl. A game between Georgia Tech and Mississippi State that was very close at the half 21-20.

The Bulldogs had momentum after Dak Prescott threw a 42-yard TD pass to Fred Ross at the halftime buzzer to get his team within one.

It would be as close as they got.

Tech, behind sophomore QB Justin Thomas ran through, around and past the Miss. State defense in the 2nd half   leading his team to a 49-34 win.

Thomas ran for 121 yards and 3 TD's and threw for another to lead Tech to an 11-3 record this season and likely Top 10 finish.

As for Mississippi State, Prescott threw for 453 yards and 3 scores, but it was not nearly enough. His Bulldogs finished the year 10-3.

ICYMI: Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins Run Past Ohio State

So, Ohio State…what was this talk about you being a title contender?

The Clemson Tigers rode the arm…and legs of quarterback Tajh Boyd and the fast feet and good hands of receiver Sammy Watkins to a 40-35 win over Ohio State in Friday night's Orange Bowl.

For the first time in a long, long time, the Orange Bowl game was actually pretty exciting.

Boyd threw for 378 yards and 5 TD's and ran for 128 yards along with another score. Watkins caught 16 of those passes for 218 yards and 2 scores.

And it almost wasn't enough.

After getting out to a 20-9 lead, the Tigers gave it back. tOSU quarterback Braxton Miller's 2-yard TD run with 12 seconds left in the first half, gave the Buckeye's a 22-20 lead.

The game went back and forth before Boyd sealed it with a 5 yard TD pass to Stanton Seckinger with 6 minutes left. That's when the leaky Tiger defense stepped up and kept Ohio State out of the end zone and sealing the win.

Attention: The College Football Playoff Will Be Called The College Football Playoff

Logo Choice 1
So, College Football fan, your new and improved, 4-team playoff system will be called---wait for it---The College Football Playoff.

Yes, that's right, the geniuses who run college football (not the NCAA--the former BCS) has decided to re-brand itself. Hundreds of thousands of dollars of research and consultant fees went into this research and they came up with a title that, well, wasn't called the BCS.

It is now called the College Football Playoff.

Logo Choice 2
It's like a random sports producer titling his new Sunday night Sports Show the Sunday Night Sports Special. (inside joke for those who know me)

And, best of all College Football Fan, you can have a say in what the new logo will look like. Plus you can find out everything you ever wanted to know about the playoff.

Read the press release RIGHT HERE

Check out CollegeFootballPlayoff.com RIGHT HERE

Logo Choice 3
The site also contains a playoff schedule and a list of the games. The Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl will be a part of the semi-final round rotation. That rotation is also expected to include the Fiesta, Cotton and Chick-Fil-A Bowl as well. Every three years a combination of 2 of those games will get the semi-finals.

The finals, well, those will be played, at least in year one, at JerryWorld in Dallas (Cowboys Stadium). It's expected to rotate to other cities and sites, much like College's version of a "Super Bowl".

Logo Choice 4
So stay tuned, you've got one last season of the BCS and it's mysterious computers. The new and "improved" system will be chosen by a "Selection Committee" in 2014. That committee, yet to be determined, will use a combination of schedule strength, performance, head to head results, reputation (who said that?) and other criteria to pick their 4 best teams.

Teams from all conferences are supposed to be eligible for this, including conferences such as the Sun Belt, Conference USA, The Mountain West or The American Athletic Conference (former Big East comprised of former Conference USA teams).

All kidding aside, we are very intrigued to see how this works, it certainly is an improvement over the old system. And if it is the beginning of change to the anachronistic bowl system that rewards only the people who run them, then by god, we are all for it.

Orange Bowl To NIU: We Didn't Want You Here...

((HT: CBSSports/Feldman))

Florida State alums around the country were already cringing at the idea of the no-win situation that is the Orange Bowl against Northern Illinois...

Big win over Northern Illinois: No love since "it shoulda happened anyway..."

Escaping Northern Illinois game with a win: No love bordering on laughter for barely beating a #MACtion squad...

Loss To Northern Illinois: Laughter amongst the universe and lighted pitchforks heading to Tallahassee to demand the head of Jimbo Fisher...

And here was the discussion from the beginning...
((HT: ESPN))

Then, this week preparing for the Orange Bowl according to Feldman, a bowl rep told an NIU staffer: "You guys [NIU] don't even deserve to be here,” the Orange Bowl rep said to the NIU staffer. “We didn't even want you here.”

Really...???

Now, despite Huskies QB Jordan Lynch's running his mouth, and Herbstreit contradicting himself on multiple programs across the four-letter saying that (first) Florida State will be coming in unmotivated to (now) being ready to take some skulls...???

Their reaction on Bee-Cee-Ess selection day...???
((HT: PrideInThePack))

To the conversation that Feldman is now reporting...???

Let's just throw grease on the fire, shall we...???

Mounties Put Up 70 On Clemson, Ends A Dismal Bowl Season For ACC

West Virginia put the ACC out of its bowl misery Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers defeated the ACC Champion Clemson Tigers 70-33 in the Orange Bowl.

"Obviously we're a better football team than how we played tonight, and you know, it is what it is." Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said.

Swinney's Clemson defense had no answer for West Virginia's offense. WVU put up 35 points in the second quarter. It was 49-20 at halftime and the 70 points the Mountaineers put up on the Tigers was the most ever in a bowl game.

WVU quarterback Geno Smith threw for 401 yards and an Orange Bowl record six touchdowns.

Here's a report from FOSG and the voice of the Clemson Tigers Pete Yannity. (Thanks WSPA-TV Greenville, SC)

West Virginia's shallacking of Clemson puts the capper on a very, very disappointing bowl season for the ACC going 2-6. Only NC State and Florida State won their bowl games.

"We have not had a good year this year, and we certainly didn't do our part." Swinney said.

Just as bad is the ACC's record in the BCS bowl games. With Virginia Tech losing the Sugar Bowl to Michigan coupled with Clemson's loss in the Orange Bowl the ACC is now 2-13 in the BCS bowl era.

"We're going to enjoy this one. We did everything that we were supposed to do" West Virginia head coach Dana Holgersen said.

That you did Mounties.
