There was an evening of discussion for the Glendale City Council to determine whether or not Renaissance Sports and Entertainment would come to some kind of agreement with the city on a lease agreement on jobing.com arena in Westgate City Center.
The City Council put in a last-minute provision on having their own back out if the deal soured in five years time- the same provision RSE made in front of the City Council. Knowing that RSE would turn the two-sided out clause deal down, RSE came back with a "make whole" idea where, if team leaves after 5 yrs, RSE would reimburse the city up to US$6-million a season for the five years the team would have been active.
Wait... weren't we in this situation before...? The point surrendered in the meeting has been a big selling point for some of the council members about having an NHL franchise around.
Glendale city staffers, the City Manager, and City Attorney are all warning against the Coyotes deal. But all it was going to take was a simple 4-3 vote by the looks of things to lock in the Phoenix Coyotes current location for the near future.
From the appearance of things, the yes votes would be Sherwood, Knaack, Martinez and Chavira. The no votes will be Alvarez, Weiers and Hugh...
Hugh is concerned about budget cuts if the deal is approved and a staff member says it's possible.
Global Spectrum as a partner for RSE late in the game might be a bit of a game-changer... and any kind of transaction around the team and arena has to go through NHL vetting. But Global Spectrum could assist in bringing in more dates to be filled more than the 41 regular season dates the Coyotes are bringing to the table.
All this with the looming spectre of city workers not getting paid (or laid off) or any other first responder getting treated for his home visit before transporting people to local hospitals. There are talks about combining or eliminating resources should his perennial-loser of a deal goes through.
Services could be cut as a result...and the HQ knows how well that will go for a city hemorrhaging trying to pay for public services instead of allocating US$25-million to the league every year.
But voting happened in the 1:00 AM hour eastern time. It appears that the provision the city wanted in the deal having their own out clause equal to RSE's was pulled off the table- the deal breaker coming into tonight...
What this appears to be is another five-year holding pattern for the franchise... and when the Coyotes discussion occurs again in five years (or less if losses accumulate faster than US$10-million which the team traditionally has), the two cities who will be ready for the NHL (Seattle and Quebec City) will be ready for pro hockey - in whatever form available.
Unless expansion has taken those two places, Kansas City would be in play.
Hugh is evolving as a "no," Sherwood a "yes," Alvarez a "no," Martinez a "yes," Chavira (a fireman, by the way, as the swing vote) an evolving "yes," Knaack is an evolving "yes," and Weiers is a "no..."
Even as Weiers says: "I know how this vote's gonna go. I'm still very uncomfortable we're going to take all of the risk."
Chavira to LeBlanc: "If you fail, we fail, correct? I know you wouldn't get involved in this if you plan to fail."
The vote was 4-3 "yes" on resolution on roll call vote...
"Ayes" carry the resolution without roll call...
And there you go...
Mayor Weiers sat down a few months ago to discuss the on-again, off-again stuff in Glendale...

DEVELOPING: Homer Bailey's 2nd No-No Vs. Giants
After throwing a no-hitter last season, Cincinnati Reds starter Homer Bailey has found a way to follow up the performance...
With his second no-hitter...
His ninth inning went fairly quietly... Brandon Crawford was retired on a comebacker, Tony Abreu was struck out on a 97 Miles Per Hour fastball and Gregor Blanco was retired 5-3 for the last out of the game...
((HT: MLB Network))
Which, then led to this after the game during his postgame interview...
Like no one could see this coming...
Blanco broke up Bailey's perfect game in the 7th inning with a leadoff walk, but was retired on a fielder's choice for the final out of the inning. The 8th was pretty tame as well with a Hunter Pence pop up, a Brandon Bell fly out, and an Andres Torres line out to center...

Busted for BUI: University of Georgia's Kicker
((ht: ajc.com))Uh...wonder how well this is going to go over with the head coach.
It appears University of Georgia kicker Marshall Morgan has got some 'splainin' to do. Morgan was arrested this past weekend (June 29th) and charged by the Putnam County Sheriff's office of Boating Under the Influence (BUI).
Morgan, who by the way is 19 and underage, was apparently towing a water skier on Lake Sinclair and cited for BUI along with towing a waterskier without someone to observe.

No word yet on UGA's reaction to this. Arrests at the school seem to generally cost players a game or two early in the season.
With Morgan set to be the #1 kicker again for the team, this could potentially have a bit of an impact.
Kim Mulkey Gets A Suspension
Okay...
How many of you remember this from the Final Four weekend...???
((HT: ESPN/NCAA))
The HQ didn't, but the folks in Indianapolis did...
So, as a result... the Baylor head coach has been given a one-game suspension for the March post-season tournament. The folks who run the college game also are holding the Bears championship per diem for the regional round...
Which, probably hurts more than the suspension does...
Mulkey, in the eyes of the NCAA, is a repeat offender. She was reprimanded in 2011 for criticizing the NCAA when they put texas A&M in her bracket- a team it had faced three times that season. Texas A&M won the game in the tourney and the national title.
"The committee unanimously felt that the behavior of Coach Mulkey was unacceptable and has no place in the women's basketball championship," said Carolayne Henry, committee chair and senior associate commissioner for the Mountain West Conference.

OSG High: Prescott High FB Coach Remembers His Hotshots
((HT: AZCentral.com))
In small towns, losses are more personal and magnified...
When 19 firefighters, known as the Granite Mountain Hotshots, lost their lives in the Yarnell Hill Fire over the weekend the town of Prescott is now associated with one of the worst firefighter disasters in United States history- the worst since the 1930's near Los Angeles.
As the town readies for Rodeo Days, a procession left Prescott for Phoenix yesterday where the firefighters were to be examined and prepared for funerals. The road was dotted with supporters and those who mourned along the roadside remembered first-hand how fragile life can be and how brave those men were.
Some of those lost were locals and attended Prescott High School. Mark Curtis caught up with the former head football coach at Prescott, Lou Benneitone, who admits the last few days have been difficult.
The 126th annual World’s Oldest Rodeo runs through this weekend and, traditionally, draws more than 35,000 visitors. Rodeo spokeswoman Marty Borgelt said one tribute planned at Saturday’s Frontier Days parade is to have a riderless horse with boots backward in the stirrups.
In the United States, the caparisoned horse is part of the military honors given to an Army or Marine Corps officer who was a colonel or above. Usually, the appearance is of black riding boots reversed in the stirrups. The visual represents a fallen leader looking back on his troops for the last time.
You may remember the caparisoned horse last appeared for President Reagan during his procession in Washington, DC.

John McEnroe Squares Off Against A Puppet
John McEnroe is "across the pond" employed by the BBC as an analyst for their Wimbledon coverage.
During one of McEnroe's reports from the Wimbledon Hacker the dog, who is a dog puppet, interrupts the former champion.
This cannot be serious.
Hacker The Dog is a host or using the British term, presenter for the British children's television service CBBC or the Children's BBC and is very popular with the young people in the UK.
Hacker the Dog is poking fun at McEnroe's most famous eruption that you never get tired of watching.

2 TAMU Starters Accused In April Beating, One Arrested
((HT: KBTX-TV))
According to a police report out of College Station, Texas two victims and witnesses told local police that there had been an altercation at a place called the "Hookah Station" on April 7 when two Texas A&M starters Floyd Raven, Senior (mugshot off to the right, thanks to the Brazos County Sheriff's Department) and DeshazorEverett had been spraying champagne- angering another group of patrons.
Raven and Everett have been charged with two counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief for an incident after the initial contact where the victims returned to their apartment complex and were pulled out of their own car by a large group of people that included the two football players.
Police interviewed the two players who later claimed that "eight to ten unknown men" joined them.
Everett told police he came face-to-face with one of the victims in the melee, but he claims that someone else punched that particular person and knocked him down.
Raven, when interviewed, said a person he "had problems with" at the bar threw a punch and missed. Raven told police he followed up with two punches and knocked the man down. Raven was jailed late Monday morning with bond set at $4,000 for each of the three charges he faces. Everett had not been arrested as of early Monday afternoon.
One of the victims said there was nearly $1,400 in damage done to his SUV.
You might remember Everett for doing this last season...
