BUZZER BEATER: D3 Title Decided At The Last

((HT: CBS Sports Network/ESPN))

Williams (Mass) had the lead on Wisconsin-Whitewater with time running out, but Quardell Young did his best Tyus Edney-Danny Ainge routine in Salem, Virginia...

Kim Mulkey Gets A Suspension

Okay...

How many of you remember this from the Final Four weekend...???
((HT: ESPN/NCAA))

The HQ didn't, but the folks in Indianapolis did...

So, as a result... the Baylor head coach has been given a one-game suspension for the March post-season tournament. The folks who run the college game also are holding the Bears championship per diem for the regional round...

Which, probably hurts more than the suspension does...

Mulkey, in the eyes of the NCAA, is a repeat offender. She was reprimanded in 2011 for criticizing the NCAA when they put texas A&M in her bracket- a team it had faced three times that season. Texas A&M won the game in the tourney and the national title.

"The committee unanimously felt that the behavior of Coach Mulkey was unacceptable and has no place in the women's basketball championship," said Carolayne Henry, committee chair and senior associate commissioner for the Mountain West Conference.

And there you go...

Rick Pitino's Tattoo: Things We Didn't Need to See

Wow! Rick Pitino wins an NCAA Tournament title coaching the Louisville Cardinals and celebrates by getting a tattoo?

Yup.

Apparently Pitino promised he'd do just that if his team won the title. And he's apparently made good on the promise.

Behold the red L in it's pasty Italian greatness.

You know...while we respect Pitino and the job he did with the Cardinals this year, we kind of think this is one of those things that probably shouldn't be shared publicly.

Though in hindsight, we suppose since the usually nattily attired Pitino will have this covered at all times, we kind of wonder what would have happened if the bet was that he had to shave his head.

Just a thought...

Brackets Implode Thanks To Harvard's Upset Of New Mexico

Harvard Head Coach Tommy Amaker And The Crimson
For those who jumped on the New Mexico bandwagon and had the Lobos taking a deep tournament run in your office bracket pools all you can say Friday morning is "Damn."

Harvard provided the first big shocking upset as the 14 seed Crimson upset the three seed Lobos 68-62.

So much for New Mexico being the chic sexy pic to go to the Final Four.  Instead it was "Crimson and Over" for the Lobos.

"People were picking us to do this and that and I thought our focus was a little off and I thought Harvard did a lot of things to take advantage of that."  New Mexico head coach Steve Alford said after the game.

And Alford just got a new 10 year contract.  The new agreement announced by the University on Wednesday includes a $125,000 bonus should the Lobos reach the Final Four.  I hope you haven't put that deposit down on a new pool for your family coach Alford (Christmas Vacation reference.)

"We were kind of sleepwalking and got smacked," New Mexico associate head coach Craig Neal said.

New Mexico shot 37 percent in the game, 37 percent!

Harvard's bigs were in major foul trouble midway through the second half yet the Lobos could not put the dagger in the hearts of the Crimson.

Your only hope for your office pools is that everyone else drank the Lobo coolaid and it's a wash.

So much for the darlings of the Mountain West Conference.

As for Harvard, this is the biggest win in program history.  The Crimson's first NCAA Tournament victory.

For my bracket I wish I saw that coming.

UPSET & BUZZER BEATER: Albany Denies Stony Brook A Date At The Dance

UAlbany's Mike Black
Stony Brook was the number one seed in the America East Conference Tournament but the only shot the Seawolves had of dancing in March was to win the tournament.
Well Albany had something to say about that.  Mike Black, who led the Great Danes with 16 points, scored his last two at the buzzer to win it for Albany.
Check out the video from UAlbanySports.com:

"It was the easiest basket I scored all night," Black said. "I trust coach to put the ball in my hands. He had a lot of trust in me and I'm thankful for that."
Albany’s 61-59 win in the America East semifinal advances the Great Danes into the conference tournament finals.  The Great Danes face Vermont Saturday in the America East final.

Stay Classy, Lexington

((HT: WTVQ-TV Lexington))

Hey, what's winning a title without some burning objects, overturned cars, and gunfire complete with injuries...???

Apparently, not winning a title...

Not to feel left out the city of Lexington felt compelled to add their name to the lost of over-partiers after UK won their championship last night...

Color the HQ shocked...

Kansas Athletic store thinks Jayhawks have already won

Screen Grab courtesy: cbslocal/st.louis
((ht: cbslocal/st.louis))

Uh...who thought that this was a good idea?

Apparently, the Kansas University athletic store briefly was trying to sell T-Shirts, congratulating the Jayhawks for winning the 2012 Final Four.

One problem: The game hasn't been played yet.

At least as of this writing.

CBS St.Louis (KMOX) reported the story on their website. READ HERE

While we think the game on Monday night should be a good one. (We are writing this at 5:15pm on Monday--before the game)

Kentucky is heavily favored and probably should be. Kansas however does have a punchers chance. But...possibly well meaning University employees should be slapped around for something like this. All that Kentucky needs is yet more motivation to try and win the game.
